Wit & Wisdom
Grandma LearnsA second grader
came home fromschool and said toher grandmother,“Grandma, guesswhat? We learnedhow to make babiestoday.”The grandmother, more than a littlesurprised, tried tokeep her cool.“That’s interesting,”she said, “How doyou make babies?”“It’s simple,” repliedthe girl. “You justchange ‘y’ to ‘i’ andadd ‘es’.”
Out of theMouths
of BabesBilly’s maternal
grandmother had justcome for a visit, andhe was ecstatic.“Now Daddy can dohis trick!” yelled Billywith glee. “What trickis that?” Grandmaasked. “Well,”answered Billy,“Daddy said that ifyou stayed for awhole week, he’dclimb the walls. Inever saw anyone dothat before.”
“A Grandparent’s Love”by Tina Williams
It seems like only yesterdayOur lives were just beginning.Your love for us never failed,Our hearts continually mending.
It is strange to watch the time flyBefore our very eyes,Which reminds me of the blessing,That we have you in our lives.
To have yet to feel the touchThat’s as gentle as your handThe closeness of our familyOne could never understand.
As each of our livesContinue to change,Reflections of your loveIn each of us remains.
You have pointed out the pathAnd led us along the way;The wisdom you have planted,We each still hold today.
You sheltered us through childhoodAnd saw us through today,Taught us of the Lord above,About faith, and how to pray.
One day we’ll all be in heavenDancing on the throne,Praising God for giving usA family like we’ve never known.
No matter where our lives may go,We will trust the Lord aboveAnd through it all always thank him forour grandparents’ love.
IntergenerationalActivities
From Grandparents Day onthe Sunday after Labor Day toIntergeneration Monththroughout September, thisseason offers plenty of remindersto take some time to bond withyounger people. Whether they’reyour grandchildren, otherrelatives, friends, or communitymembers in need of a mentor, here are a few ways you canconnect with them:
Teach your grandkids yourfavorite card game or a classicgame like mahjong or chess. Inreturn, have them show you afavorite video game or funmobile app.
Volunteering together is agreat way to teach younger folksthe importance of giving back tothe community. Visit an animalshelter or spend time helping outat a food bank.
Like the song says,“Everything old is new again.”Many in today’s generation areinterested in traditional hobbieslike sewing, knitting andgardening. If you possess skillsin these areas, offer to teach thebasics. Working on projectstogether gives you a chance tochat about other topics as wellas foster the love of learning.
Speaking of learning, ask youryounger peers for some tips onusing a computer, tablet orsmartphone. As a result, you cansend emails, photos and textmessages to each other to stayin touch.

Our September Resident of theMonth will be celebrating her 75thbirthday on September 22. AnAmerican House resident sinceDecember 27, 2014, Emily J. wasborn in Bridgeport, CT. She grewup in Bristol, CT, where shegraduated in 1959. She dreamed ofa career as a stewardess withAmerican Airlines, but didn’t makethe height requirement: she was aninch taller than the height limitof 5'8".
But not being chosen as a flightattendant didn’t stop our MissEmily. She passed her Civil Serviceexam at the age of 17 and movedto Washington, D.C., to work as anAdministrative Assistant for theDepartment of Defense.
Emily worked for the DoD for twoyears before marrying Charlie (sheknew him since she was a year old!)on June 2, 1962. They moved to

Son Charles wasborn in 1965, followed by Cynthia in1966 and Craig came along in 1970.Sadly, Emily and Charlie lost Craig atthe age of 2 weeks also on March 10.
Emily, a self-proclaimedbookworm, went to college to obtainher degree in Library Science. Shealso worked as a Production ControlSpecialist at a casket-makingcompany for over 2 years.
After divorcing Charlie in 1985(they are very close friends to thisday), she met Donald at a dance. Hewas getting ready to leave and shewas getting ready to steal his chair. He asked her to dance and as theysay, that was it. They were togetherfor 23 wonderful, happy years.

Employee of the Month:Pauline D.
Our September Employee of theMonth is a familiar face in Dietary, having just celebrated her secondyear here on May 16th. Pauline D.was born on March 31, 1973, in Flint,MI, but moved to Florida when shewas 8 years old. She is a 1992graduate of Zephyrhills High Schooland spends most of her free time withher son, Joshua, and hergrandmother, Isabell, who turned92 years “young” on Aug. 24th.
And on June 14th, a 7-poundbundle of joy named Ian enteredPauline’s life ... her first grandchild.Congratulations, Pauline!
Pauline’s first job was in the DietaryDept. at Westbrooke Manor, whereshe spent five years before joiningour “family.”
She loves action movies, especiallythe ones with Vin Diesel (whodoesn’t?). She also loves camping, spending time with her friends andfamily, and shopping at flea marketsand yard sales.
When asked what she likes aboutworking here, she said (withouthesitation), “The residents and thestaff.” Her advice to new employees:“Enjoy the residents ... take time toget to know them.”
Pauline’s outlook on life: “Life is agame ... you don’t have a choice butto play. You don’t know where you aregoing to land, so you have to makethe most of where you do finally land.”Well, Pauline, we are so happy thatyou “landed” here. Congratulations onbeing chosen as our Employee of theMonth for September!
