ALUMNI & FRIENDS MAGAZINE • SPRING 2015

As you read this magazine, the subtle changes of winter moving to spring are appearing. And spring means time for graduation. This spring, we are prepar-ing for nearly 300 students to graduate from Dunwoody. Looking back on last year’s graduating class, we are proud to report that about 99 percent of our graduates found jobs in the fields for which they were trained. That is an incredible statistic! It is not something that happens without a host of people helping out. Yes, we have great faculty and great staff who provide a state-of-the-industry education, focusing on hands-on, applied learning that prepares our students for jobs and careers. But there are a host of others who volunteer to help make Dunwoody great. We have a vibrant Alumni Board of Managers that organize the Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament and the Kate L. Dunwoody Society Luncheon to raise money for scholarships; that developed the Student Leadership Award to recognize outstanding leadership skills and school spirit; and that every year has a 100 percent contribution to the College’s Annual Fund. Every one of our programs has a Program Advisory Committee made up of volunteers who help our pro-grams stay current; give advice on curricular changes needed to support industry’s changing technologies; and help our programs procure equipment, intern-ships, and other things needed to keep our programs relevant. At the oversight level, we have a Board of Trustees comprised of dedicated volunteers who provide gover-nance, generous financial support, fiduciary oversight of the College’s finances, and guidance as we work towards achieving our strategic plan. We also have alumni and friends who continuous-ly volunteer their time and resources to make sure Dunwoody is equipped to educate our students for a 21st century career. The work that we do wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our donors. Their contributions are highlighted in the 2013-2014 Honor Roll of Donors, which is included in this issue. We are grateful for and humbled by your support.

Volunteers and donors are a crucial part of Dunwoody. This issue highlights some to the ways that volunteers help make Dunwoody great. At graduation this year, we will celebrate the positive impact a Dunwoody education has as we change lives through technical education. Your support and your volunteer work helped nearly 300 students get to graduation and transition into immediate jobs and great careers. On behalf of our graduating class – thank you! Stay committed, be proud, we are Dunwoody.

Russ BeckerBoard of Trustees

For Board of Trustees member Russ Becker, volunteering for Dunwoody is all about helping students and

supporting industry. “When I think about a Dunwoody student, I think

Claire Ferrara’11 Heating/Air Conditioning Systems DesignAlumni Board of Managers

of a very hands-on, practical, logical, hard-working individual. Many of them haven’t been given a whole lot in their lives,” says Russ. “That en-ergy and effort they bring, plus the technical, practical knowledge that Dunwoody provides is what we find so attractive in business.” Russ is president and CEO of APi Group, Inc. (APi), one of Minnesota’s top 25 private companies and parent company of more than 40 comple-mentary construction businesses. “With the looming shortage of talent in the construction industry, I feel like giving back to Dunwoody is the right thing to do,” explains Russ, who has served on the College’s Board of Trustees since 2007. He also chaired the Advancement Committee, and in 2014 he served on the Centennial Gala Committee. Both he and APi are College benefactors, as are many other individuals and companies associated with APi.

Claire earned a B.A. from the University of St. Catherine before attending Dunwoody—and that

was great, she says—but her heart be-longs to Dunwoody. “From the first day at Dunwoody, I was hooked. Every day I learned something I could apply.” Now a project lead in property management field operations at Target, she started a Dunwoody alumni network group after only three months with the company. “It can be a challenge to be a woman in the trades,” explains Claire, who’s a big proponent of the College’s Women in Technical Careers Initiative. “People underestimate you sometimes.” She says her Dunwoody education not only gave her the tools, but the creden-tials to be taken more seriously. Claire co-chairs the annual Kate Dunwoody Society Luncheon, which celebrates women students, alumni, and industry partners. With her leadership, the lun-cheon has gone from being a loss-leader to a money-maker for scholarships. As

He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Construction Industry Round Table (a national business trade association of chief executives) and on the Advisory Board for the Construc-tion Management Program at Michigan Technological University, where he received a hockey scholar-ship and earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering. Hockey’s still a big part of his life: He’s the assistant coach for the Mahtomedi varsity high school hockey team and coaches for the Mahtomedi Youth Hockey Association. All three of his sons play the game. Russ is also passionate about Minneapolis Children’s Hospital and Clinics, where he chairs the Board of Directors. “When you walk through the door and you see those kids and you see how tough and resilient they are, and how they battle adversity, it’s hard not to want to help them. They have a soft spot in my heart.”

chair of the Alumni Board of Manag-ers’ Philanthropy Committee, she’s also involved in planning for the Alumni Golf Tournament and the new Alumni Display, which will showcase what alumni are doing for the College and community. Beyond Dunwoody, Claire’s a trip leader with MEDICO, a humanitarian service organization that provides health care in Central America, primar-ily through short-term mission trips for doctors, nurses, and dentists. She leads a 10-day trip to the same region in Nicaragua each year. “I really enjoy helping other people help someone,” says Claire. Claire’s also a board member of Challenge for Children’s, a charity paintball game that benefits Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota. She hopes to see 800 people participate in this year’s event on July 19, and to raise $150,000 for the hospital’s simula-tion center. “When you see a 12-year-old kid who’s been a heart patient and had 20 surgeries splashing around in the mud, and then coming up to his parents to say, ‘This is so cool!’ … well, it’s hard to put into words.”

Leon Brewer’55 Machine Tool Technology Department Volunteer

Anyone who’s been around the Dunwoody machine shop in the last 60 years or so probably

knows Leon Brewer. Even as a student he was helping out, working on the repair crew or substituting for an

instructor every now and then. “I kind of enjoyed that,” he remembers. “So when I graduated I told the depart-ment head (Loren Blanchar) I’d be interested in coming to teach when there was an opportunity.” Loren took him up on it, and Leon started teach-ing fulltime in August 1957. “I enjoyed the trade myself, and I enjoyed seeing students finally catch on to something and say, ‘Oh! That’s how it works!’” Leon taught fulltime until 1993, but

Dunwoody fascinated me,” says Steve Stone, remembering his stu-dent days. He recalls the cobbled

wood floors, the open ceilings, and the excitement of learning a different aspect of the trade every month. Now

a volunteer, he helps today’s students make the most out of their own Dun-woody experiences. “I wouldn’t volun-teer if it weren’t still fun,” says Steve, whose grandfather, father, uncle, and son all attended Dunwoody. Steve is vice president of electrical service and partner of Parsons Electric, the largest electrical contractor in Min-nesota and employer of approximately 1,250 people. The company supports many community organizations, in-cluding Dunwoody College. In 2014, as president of the Minne-apolis Chapter of the National Elec-trical Contractors Association (NECA), Steve helped lead the formation of the NECA Student Chapter at Dunwoody, the only student chapter in the Upper Midwest. In past years, Steve also served on the Minneapolis Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee and interviewed newcomers to the field. “Those with a Dunwoody educa-tion really stood out,” he says.

Steve started volunteering for Dun-woody more than 15 years ago. He joined the Alumni Board of Managers in 2009, and has served on its Leader-ship Committee since then. He enjoys interviewing nominees for the Student Leadership Award and hearing their stories, as well as serving as an exam-iner in the final hands-on electrical exam, a day-long series of timed tests. It’s high stress for students, who have to perform a variety of tasks under the examiners’ eyes. “I can tell which students have a strong work ethic, which ones are confident, but not ar-rogant, and which ones have a positive attitude.” Starting his career with Dunwoody and ending it with Parsons has been priceless, says Steve. After 32 years he’ll soon retire from Parsons, but not from service to Dunwoody. “Dun-woody is the best, and a lot of that comes from alumni volunteers.”

continued to repair the shop’s machine tools—first on a part-time basis and then as a volunteer. Now in his mid-80s, Leon still oils all the machines and occasionally advises instructors and students. If he sees something that looks like an accident or injury wait-ing to happen, he’ll speak up. “Safety was one thing that we really stressed as instructors, so I’m very aware of it,” explains Leon. He points out that machining is different these days, but he can still help out with the basics. “There’s a lot of Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machining,” he explains. “That’s one of the biggest changes I’ve seen.” Dean of Robotics and Manufactur-ing E.J. Daigle, recalls the time when a Machine Tool alumnus visited campus for his 50-year reunion, and E.J. asked him who he’d had as an instructor in 1962. The alumnus said, “I had Leon Brewer, but there’s no way he’s still here.” As E.J. tells it, they walked up to the shop, and there was Leon, fixing a machine. “He’s done every job we have in manufacturing, and he continues to help Dunwoody to this day,” says E.J.

Dale MulfingerChair of the College’s Architecture Program Advisory Committee

Mike LeJeuneBoard of Trustees Member

For more than a decade I felt that the state of Minnesota deserved a second professional architecture

program,” says Dale Mulfinger, chair of the College’s Architecture Program Advisory Committee (PAC). “Minne-sota imports a tremendous number of young architects from around the region,” says Dale, noting that the presence of Fortune 500 companies and a highly educated populous combine to make Minnesota a hot spot for the profession. Dale is helping Dunwoody launch its Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) pro-gram, which the College is in the pro-cess of seeking programmatic accredita-tion for from the National Architectural Accrediting Board. The program will give students the option to earn a two-year degree in Architectural Drafting & Design and then a B.Arch. after another three years. That arrangement might have worked well for Dale himself, who as a high school student thought he would study drafting at Dunwoody. Instead, he enrolled in the University of Minnesota’s architecture program, which until now was the state’s only path to licensure.

When I was asked to join the board, I felt that Dunwoody had done so much for my business,

that I wanted to do something for Dun-woody,” says Mike LeJeune, Board of Trustees member since 2012. Mike was CEO of LeJeune Steel from 1992 to 1996, and for the past 19 years has led Fabcon. The company specializes in design, man-ufacture, and installation of structural precast concrete wall panels, as well as manufacture of other concrete sections. The Savage, Minn.-based company employs 835 people in three locations, and will soon be opening a fourth plant, in Kansas. “Many of our best drafters come from Dunwoody,” says Mike. “It’s the gold standard.” At Dunwoody, Mike serves on the Advancement and Board Governance Committees of the Board of Trustees. “I have a lot of friends in industry that are served by Dunwoody, and I’m able to make introductions,” he says, explain-ing one of his roles on the committees. “Dunwoody has given a lot to Fabcon,

The challenge now, says Dale, is get-ting the word out that Dunwoody has a bachelor of architecture program. “I’m chatting with every architect I know.” And Dale knows a lot of architects. Now principal emeritus of SALA Architects, Inc., for more than 40 years he was an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota and a frequent guest lecturer at architec-ture schools around the country. His books about Minnesota architect Edwin Lundie and cabins have earned him the moniker “cabinologist.” In addition to spreading the word, Dale is using his connections to build the program’s architecture library collections. “I know a generation of architects who are starting to download their collection of books,” he explains. He also came up with the idea for the new Charlie Prize, named in honor of the late Charlie Radloff, a beloved instructor in the Architectural Drafting & Estimating program. “The prize will provide some additional incentive and excitement about the program that will nurture students moving beyond the two-year program of today to the five-year program,” explains Dale, who is helping to raise funds for the prize.

and I want to give back.” Often, trustees and students have lunch together after board meetings. “My strongest impression is that the students love the College and their instructors,” says Mike. “I went to the University of Minnesota, and I never felt that way.” Fabcon routinely hosts groups of Dunwoody students on tours, which is helpful to both students and the company. “We’re trying to attract more Dunwoody graduates,” explains Mike. Mike is also on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities and chairs their Property and Facilities Committee. “I don’t think there’s another organization that does as much for Twin Cities kids and families as the YMCA,” he says. As a volunteer leader he’s been involved in construction projects for the Ridgedale and Forest Lake YMCA buildings, and now demoli-tion and reconstruction of the Midway facility. “That [committee work] has been a lot of fun. It gives me a chance to do what I enjoy.”

Dunwoody students earn top spots in welding competitionThis February, two Dunwoody Welding Technology students earned top spots in the Behind the Mask Welding Competition sponsored by the American Welding Society (AWS). Twelve Dunwoody students compet-ed against about 100 other students from Minnesota and Wisconsin col-leges.Dunwoody student Zech Bradach earned Second Place in Gas Metal Arc Welding and Third Place in Shielded Metal Arc Welding. Student Ollie Reller earned Third Place in Gas Metal Arc Welding. Students competed in several timed events that utilized welding processes, which were then inspected by AWS Certified Welding Inspectors who scru-tinized the dimensions, weld size and weld quality. “This is an excellent opportunity to reinforce the advanced skills that we teach on a daily basis and allows stu-dents to apply those skills in a timed event,” Instructor Michael Reeser said. “It motivates students to produce quality work as it is scored by indus-try-certified welding inspectors.”

Snow Devil 1012 team earns Third PlaceDunwoody’s Snow Devil 1012 plow team earned Third Place and the Golden Smile Sportsmanship Award at the Fifth Annu-al Institute of Navigation (ION) Autono-mous Snowplow Competition in January. The event is part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival. The team, led by faculty advi-sors E.J. Daigle and John McShannock, was made up of Automated Systems & Robotics students. The Snow Devil 1012 used a magnetic navigation system to track an electronic signal. Course correction calculations were done in an Allen Bradley Mi-croLogix PLC. Daigle said the Snow Devil 1012’s simple design and marketability set it apart from the competition. “Most of the robots had over $10,000

in just sensors,” Daigle said. “Our total robot cost was $3,000 and could be implemented today by embedding magnetic sensors into a sidewalk or driveway.” The Dunwoody team was also recog-nized for their sportsmanship, earning the Golden Smile Sportsmanship Award. Daigle said the team earned the award by helping every team with repairs, cheering the loudest for others, partic-ipating in the parade, initiating crowd participation and helping with clean-up after the event. The purpose of the competition is to challenge students to design, build, and operate a fully autonomous snowplow that utilizes state-of-the-art navigation and control technologies to rapidly, ac-curately, and safely clear a path of snow.

2015 Construction Expo Enjoyed by All

Dunwoody’s Construction Expo was held on Tuesday, Feb. 3. Industry representatives helped prepare students by conducting mock job interviews prior to the

expo. Opportunities to network and discuss internship and employment possibilities were also appreciated by

both students and local businesses.

Dunwoody Design & Graphics students are the “Best of the Best” The results are in and Dunwoody Design & Graphics Technology stu-dents earned the distinction of being the “Best of the Best” at the annual International Corrugated Packaging Foundation’s (ICPF) Student Design Competition, held this February during the Design & Graphics Technology 2015 Internship Showcase. The Dunwoody team was invited to compete in the International event after winning the Association of Inde-pendent Corrugated Converters (AICC) Structural Design Competition this past summer. For the international competition, the teams had to successfully “sell” their completed projects to a panel of industry experts. The students earned a $500 cash prize and a prize-winning ad-dition to their portfolios and resumes.

Kay Phillips receives STEP Ahead AwardAward Recognizes Women for Excellence in ManufacturingThis April, the Manufacturing Institute honored 130 women from across the nation with the Women in Manufactur-ing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineer-ing and Production) Ahead Award. Kay Phillips, Co-Owner of ATEK Companies in Eden Prairie and the current chair of the Board of Trustees of Dunwoody College of Technology, was one of the women selected for this honor. The STEP Ahead Awards recognize women who have demonstrated ex-cellence and leadership in their careers and represent all levels of the man-ufacturing industry, from the factory floor to the C suite.

Making the Arch:Dunwoody students and staff partner for innovative projectIt was a project that brought two de-partments and millions of data points together to create one three-dimen-sional image that became the face of Dunwoody’s Annual Fund campaign – “Making the Future.” At Dunwoody College of Technology we are “Making the Future” happen. We make networks and robots, prototypes and packaging, building models and medical devices. We make cars run and machines hum. We make plans appear, displays take shape and portfolios shine. And what better way to bring that theme to life than with a three-dimen-sional image of Dunwoody’s front arch. To make that idea a reality, Engineer-ing Drafting & Design Instructor Alex Wong ’12, and Surveying & Civil Engi-neering Technology Principal Instructor Kelly Ness combined their departments’ knowledge and know-how in a very unique way. Bringing the archway to life through the use of the Manufacturing & Robot-ics Department’s Stratasys Fortus 250 3D Printer first required the tools and expertise of the Surveying & Civil Engi-neering Technology Department. Last summer, Ness and a class of stu-dents began the project by utilizing their survey equipment to conduct a laser scan of the archway, which collect-ed millions of high-density data points. Once the class had collected the data, Ness and Wong pulled the information into AutoCAD software and started

pulling out specific parts that could be used to create a “virtual blueprint” of the arch.

Three-Dimensional printing is the pro-cess of making three-dimensional solid objects from digital designs. The project did more than create a visual representation of the Annual Fund, it also demonstrated ways in which two departments and two fields of study can partner and collaborate to find innovative and creative solutions. In fact, the project and theme were chosen as a way to highlight the leading-edge technologies taught at Dunwoody, which gives graduates an advantage in the workplace. “It was unique, to have this type of cross-departmental project,” Ness said. “I would like to explore projects like this that we could do year after year. In the future, there will be more and more partnerships like this.”

“Manufacturing is a great career path because of all of the different and inter-esting aspects it takes to really be good in this field,” Phillips said. “It is the inter-section of design, people, machinery and materials and provides so many opportu-nities to learn, grow, and contribute.” Like the other STEP Ahead Award honorees, Phillips has been successful in her own career and has proven to be a leader in the industry as a whole. Phillips joined ATEK after a successful career as an environmental attorney and business engineer running the business units of multinational corporations. As ATEK’s first non-family member at the helm, Phillips helped ATEK realize it was an ideal fit for the medical device industry, and the company reinvented itself. Phillips’ expertise in strategy and maximizing operational efficiency al-lowed the company to transform itself. Phillips is committed to the future of manufacturing and passionate about providing more economic opportunity for women through training for man-ufacturing and other technology jobs. As the Board of Trustees Chair, Phillips is championing the College’s Women’s Ini-tiative, a comprehensive plan to attract more women to nontraditional educa-tion and career paths. She hopes that more women will become trained and enter manufacturing careers, but she also sees exciting opportunities across the board in technical education and em-ployment. With her leadership, the Col-lege is pursuing more female faculty and students, raising funds for more schol-arships for women, and changing the culture to make the predominantly male college more welcoming to women. Phillips was nominated for this award by Dunwoody President Rich Wagner.

Honoring Dunwoody AlumniThe Dunwoody Alumni Association is sponsoring a new initiative – a digital display focused on alumni. The display will celebrate Dunwoody’s reputation, heritage and legacy, all of which were built by Dunwoody alumni! The interactive display will be installed in a prominent location at Dun-woody, where alumni, students, faculty and staff can catch the latest news about Dunwoody alumni and events, learn exciting alumni career news, and gain appreciation for the role of alumni in supporting the College. The digital alumni recognition display can include: • Information about upcoming events and volunteer opportunities• Photos from recent alumni gatherings and events• Recognition of alumni award winners• Recognition of current alumni donors• Recognition of alumni volunteers You can help make this display possi-ble by making a tax-deductible contri-bution to Dunwoody, designated for the Dunwoody Alumni Display. As a donor to the project, your name will be among the first to appear in the digital display. For more information about this project, e-mail [email protected] or call 612-381-3064.

Dunwoody instructor, volunteer and alum leaves behind a legacyEach year, Dunwoody is grateful to re-ceive estate gifts from our alumni and friends. Recently, one of these gifts came from Robert Poupore, ’50 Auto-motive Service Technology. Poupore was part of the fabric of Dunwoody College. He was an alum, an instruc-tor, a volunteer and a leader. After graduating, Poupore worked in the automotive field for a number of years before returning to Dun-woody as an automotive instructor. Before retiring in 1989, Poupore went on to serve as the Automotive Depart-ment Chair and the Vice President of Educational Programs. During his tenure, Poupore was an instrumental leader who laid the foundation for a fund drive to upgrade the College’s equipment and facilities, as well as helped develop the Associate Degree option for students. “Robert was always willing to share his thoughts and feelings, and you always knew where you stood with him,” said Dean of Automotive Programs Jon Kukachka. Even after retiring, Poupore kept his connections with Dunwoody. He

was a dedicated volunteer and gener-ous supporter of the College. He was recognized in 1991 with the Outstand-ing Volunteer Award and received the Alumni Achievement Award in 1996. Beyond Dunwoody, Poupore was a faithful volunteer for several organi-zations, including the Lions Club and the Automotive Booster Club. With all of those activities, Poupore still found time for his family, including his two children and many grandchildren. Poupore was a kind and generous man who touched the lives and hearts of countless Dunwoody staff and students, and his legacy at Dunwoody remains. Poupore, who passed away in 2013, included Dunwoody in his estate and encouraged others to do likewise. “I loved farming and fixing things. I didn’t have

a way to get into farming when I came out of the

Army, so I went to Dunwoody. They taught me that

you have to learn the basics well, and then you can

now that I’ve reached a financially comfortable position in life, I hope

helped motivate me to give, and I was very surprised at how easy it was

“My wife and I were fortunate, so we’re helping the organizations

that helped us along the way. I’ve had some good opportunities in

apply for a scholarship and gave me a part-time job, and later the

College gave me the opportunity to teach and develop curriculum.”

More than 550 alumni and busi-ness and industry leaders serve on Program Advisory Commit-tees (PACs) each year. These vol-unteer advisors are a powerful source of information about industry trends and technolo-gies and essential to keeping Dunwoody faculty and pro-grams up-to-date on emerging needs in the workplace. Each Dunwoody program has a PAC. In this issue, we are pleased to recognize the PAC volunteers for Architecture (ARCH).

In this and each future issue of this magazine we’ll list some of the Dunwoody College Program Advisory Committee (PAC) volunteers as a small “thank you” for their service.

LEGACY ASSOCIATION

The Legacy Association recogniz-es donors who have informed the school of their decision to provide a legacy commitment to future generations of Dunwoody students through their wills, trusts, gift annuities, or other deferred gifts. This list does not include the many individuals who made a deferred gift and are now deceased. In addition, there are 28 legacy donors who wish to re-main anonymous. For information about leaving a legacy gift, please contact Jennifer Kahlow, Director of Gift Planning at 612/381-3061 or [email protected] Terri L. Anderson ‘13 Donald L.
