Week 6 Term 4 2018

It was great to see so many people supporting the school at our Family Fun Fair on Thursday night last week. The P&C did a fantastic job and are to be congratulated on making it such a success. The Fair is a fun way of getting parents and the wider community involved in the school with the money raised going towards improving opportunities available to our students.

Someone reminded me the other day that we have 5 Mondays until Christmas. The year is definitely speeding by. Assessments and report writing are well underway, as is the initial planning for 2019. I am still trying to determine which staff will be in place for 2019 as School Recruitment is flat out and some appointments may need to be made in Term 1 of the new year. If your child/children are not returning to Albury Public School next year please ensure that you let the office know so that we have a clearer idea of student numbers. Staffing is allocated based on student numbers and we are currently hovering between 24 and 25 classes for next year. This uncertainty is significant as staffing and 2019 classes require accurate numbers.

Our school celebrations of achievement, Presentation Days, are fast approaching. Kindergarten students will hold their Presentation Day on Thursday 13 December from 2:00pm. Parents and carers are invited to join Kindergarten for lunch and then the Presentation Day assembly. Students in Year 1 will participate in a special Teddy Bear’s picnic from 12:00pm – 1:00pm on Thursday 13 December. We hope that parents/carers can join us for this exciting event to mark the end of Year 1.

Students in Years 2 – 6 will participate in Presentation Day on Wednesday 12 December at Albury High School hall. The Presentation day assembly commences at 10:30am. Students will depart the school between 9:00am and 10:00am depending on their role in the Presentation day ceremony with all students returning to school by 1:00pm. We hope that you can join us for this great day.

In the next two weeks, students in Years 2 – 5 will receive a permission note for the 2019 school swimming carnival. This carnival will be held on Friday 1 February at the Albury Pool. Final costings are still to be determined but Aligned Leisure has assured us that pool entry charges will be maintained and very reasonable. The permission note and nomination of events form must be returned by the end of this year. Any current Year 1 students (Year 2 2019) who are turning 8 next year, can swim 50 metres competently and are willing to compete in the 50 metre events can also participate. These students will need to see Miss Sheridan for a permission note to attend. These notes must be returned with nomination forms and money by the end of this year.

PARENT HELPER LIGHT LUNCHEON

It is nearly time to say “thank you” to all our classroom, sporting and community helpers who have contributed to our school this year. On Tuesday 27 November we will be having a special light luncheon at 1:10pm in the hall. Save the date and keep an eye out for further information.

The Department of Education Learn to Swim Program will be conducted for students at Albury Public School who have registered, next week. Learn to Swim runs from Monday, 26 November for 10 days, concluding on Friday 7 December. Participating students need to remember their swimming gear in readiness for next Monday.

Albury Public School would like to thank all of our volunteer parents and helpers. A light luncheon is being organised and invitations sent out for Tuesday 27 November from 1:10pm – 1:40pm. We hope to see you here for our thank you luncheon.

The male staff at Albury Public School are embracing “Movember” with some interesting results. Next Thursday, 29 Movember, we are having a Mad Movember day. Students are encouraged to come dressed in casual clothes (sensible clothes that still enable PE activities), wear or draw a moustache and donate a gold coin. All money raised will support charities and research projects into men’s health. Thanks to Mr Border for organising the events for next week.

The sport committee has consulted widely to produce a draft set of guidelines and procedures for our school. This work will be presented at the P&C meeting next week with a further opportunity for parents/carers to provide feedback before the guidelines are finalised for the 2019 school year. The guidelines streamline and clearly articulate the organisation of sport and physical activity. The P&C meeting is from 7:30pm on Tuesday 27 November and the parent/carer meeting will be held on Wednesday 28 November from 3:30pm in the VC room (near 3LB classroom). If you have any further questions about the guidelines or the meetings, please contact Miss Kirsty Sheridan at the school or by emailing the school on [email protected].

On Thursday 6 December I will be hosting a coffee and cake from 10:00am. This is an opportunity for parents/carers to hear about the school’s progress this year and to provide feedback to school planning for 2019. If you are able to attend, please call the office to register.

This weeks feature class - 5/6LP

This semester, 5/6 LP have embarked on a journey through South East Asia. The students were separated into six different country groups and asked to create a country profile, describing the physical, social and political geography of each country. It wasn’t long before the students discovered that all countries shared the Mekong River. They also learned that there were massive dams under construction which were interrupting natural flows and ecosystems. They were then introduced to the concept of ‘systems thinking’.

The students discovered that they were not simply memorising facts about a river, but instead, were learning about universal concepts that can be applied to just about any situation involving complex and interrelated systems. Our classroom became a space for 21st Century, cross-cultural and transboundary problem solving.

Conceptual learning focuses on broad and powerful organising ideas that have relevance within and across subject areas. They reach beyond national and cultural boundaries. Concepts help to integrate learning, add coherence to the curriculum, deepen disciplinary understanding, build the capacity to engage with complex ideas and allow transfer of learning to new contexts.

Students learned that everything that occurs upstream, affects all who are downstream. This is a universal issue which affects people from across the globe.

For the research project, students utilised the Kath Murdoch Inquiry Cycle. The Inquiry Cycle begins with the Tuning In phase. Students connected with their own lives and mind-mapped what they already knew about rivers. They discovered that the issues people are facing along the Mekong are similar to the issues throughout the Murray Darling Basin.

During the next phase, Finding Out, students learned research skills, such as where to find reliable information and how to detect bias. They learned that there are many and varied perspectives in the world. Their job was to be like detectives and filter through unreliable information.

The Sorting Out phase helped them to organise their research findings and plan ways to communicate new-found information.

The Going Further phase was the most challenging. This was the stage where students tried to collaborate and share their learning with each other. It was challenging trying to negotiate with other countries whilst struggling to come to agreements within their own groups.

During the Synthesising and Reflecting phase, students learned that the concept of systems sits at the top of almost everything. They weaved literacy, numeracy and critical thinking throughout their inquiry and learned a bit about themselves along the way.

The final phase, Acting and Applying is what we are doing right now. Sharing our learning with you. 5/6LP would like to raise awareness of actions that you can take to help protect the environment and livelihoods along the Mekong River.

Please visit www.conservation.org and follow the links to the Greater Mekong Region. www.conservation.org
