GH[Rllt'S A]lGtlSRemember John Forsythe informing us that "Once upon a

time there were three beautiful girls ..."? Does that mean

Charlie's Angels was a fairy tale? It certainly had the

{emale empowerment angle locked up, and this updated,big-screen version of the Seventies television jiggle-feststicks to that formula like hot pants on Cameron Diaz.

Fans of the series will get a charge out of seeing the

original's T&A crimeJighting formula transposed to the

big screery and even detractors - and there were many --will be hard-pressed not to crack a grin watching Diaz,

Liu, and Barrymore (rvho also produced) kick righteousbutt and shake some splendid booty. Let's not mincewords: The script, by Ryan Rowe, Ed Solomon, and JohnAugust, is as thin as a garze thong, a barely-thereframework on which are hung outlandish, o{ten outrightsilly action set-pieces. There's wire-work d la The Matrixwith the Angels high-kicking everything in sight (courtesy

o{ Cheung-Yan Yuer! who, not surprisingly, headed ffue

Mntrix slunt team), explosions, guided missiles, CGIdisguises, and plenty of rump-shaking bump 'n' grindage.

Sure, deep down inside we may have a tiny, politicallycorrect shouter telling us that this is popcorn trash, yetanother symptom of the ongoing "dumbing down" ofAmerica, but the fact remains that McG, in his feature

debut no less, has created a simply flat-out fun film. It's

obvious from the start that this triumvirate of Holl)-woodsex bombs are having a blast as they essay these wackyiiber-babes. Diaz in particular seems to be cresting on a

tide of nitrous oxide: Her character Natalie is the Farrah o{

the group, a bubble-headed sprite who just wants to find a

decent guy, do the robot, and, you know have fun. Liu'sAlex (the brainy one) juggles boyfriend LeBlanc and a

nasty pout, and Barrymore's Dylan heads up the team and

makei bad relationship decisions such as leaving real-lifeparamour Green (in a cameo) in favor of the fabled WrongMan. What's a girl to do? Why, kick ass, of course, and thisthe film has in glorious, Poweryut'f Girl spades. McG,

whose previous work includes a brace of MTV videos and

commercial work, puts his rapid-fire editing skills and

deeply ironic sense of humor to work overtime, and

amazingly, it all hangs together in a lightweight, sexy

confection. Marc Savlov - Aa stin Chronicle

BEST IlI SHllWIt's fitting that satirist Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman\

should release this potent, sublimely ridirulous film now. Thls

Is Spinal Tap, the mrivaled template for faux dorumentarieseverywhere, and a film in which Guest co-staffed (as NigelTufnel), is enjoying a re-release at the moment, and it'samzing how well this much more streamlined film holds upto Rob Reiner's rock & roll fiasco. Guest has had plenty of timein the interim to hone his lampooning skills, and this film, utilizing much of the same ensemble casl as Guffman, is a

sleek, purring (barking, actually), comic machine. The bizarre,

insuilar world of professional dog shows is the intendedsatidcal iilget here, md Guest md company make the most ofthe public's less-than-adequate knowledge of the situation. We've all seen the Westrnitrter Kemel Club affairs on PBS, or

A&E, and so we have expectations about these events goingi4 but Guest flips them on their wagglely ear; the result is

explosive belly laughs. There's Levy and O'Hara as the

husband-and-wife owners of a Nomich Terrier. The ruminggag here is that the wife has apparently slept with every othermale in the universe prior to teaming with hubby Levy, and

they keep ruming into old flames in the udikeliest of places.

(Larry Miller has a terrific cameo as a testosterone-addled ex-

paramour) Higgins md McKean, as an a unmbiguously gay,

middle-aged duo parading themselves and their Shih Tzu are

dotous, as are Posey and Hitchcock as the yuppified couple

behind an equally neurotic Weimaraner And then, of course,

there's Guest himsell as a Southern-fried bloodhound ownergiven to babytalk in front of the dawg. The cast is renarkablyon-target here, even more so than in Guffman, whic[ for all itsstrenuous aping of small-town vanities, was a much less

cohesive film than this. Best in Show is all of a piece; it hangs

together like some hilariously filigreed mobile, each role

interacting with the others, perfectly. The thing about Guest's

film(s), the really splendid thing, ihe key aspect, is that unlikeso many other satires and "mockumentaries", his intent is

never cruel. Certainly Best in Show portrays the canine-

fetishizing cognoscenti as an odcL rare breed, but the filnnever takes the low road when it can rise above. You get the

feeling that Guest, during his, no doubt, thorough researching

into the subject, fell in love with these campy, unique dog

lovers. And, however funny, the results are never mean-

spirited. You fall in love, or at the very least like, with them

too. -Marc Savlov Austin Chronlicle

Crouching Tiger, Hidrlen Drcgon is a perfect film. - Tim League,

owner, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

Ever since 1999's approach began heralding the end ofBritain's lease on Hong Kong, bright lights irom thatwonderfully crossbred culture's frantic, ferocious filmindustry have been filtering steadily westward, includingpeople like director Ang Lee, "wire-fighting" master Yuen

Wo-Ping or actors/God and Goddess of Cool Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh. But if you think you already knowwhat these artists are capable o{ merely on the strength oftheir latest North Americanized offerings, believe me - youain't seen nothing yet.

As directed by Lee, Crouching Tigu, Hidden Dlagln pltsconflicted adult warriors Chow and Yeoh against their hot-tempered junior counterparf 19-year-old Zhng Zi-Yi - a

Mainland dancer turned natural martial artist whoseuntamed fury hits with the strength of a human atom bomb-- for possession of a legendary sword called the GreenDestiry. Visually spectacular and morally complex, this is a

classic Chinese fairy tale updated and restaged for the early21st century.

Ciouching Tiger is a movie rooted in the longstandingtraditions of the wuxia piary or "{ilm of martial chivalry" -Taoist fables set in a mythical version of ancient Chinawhere wire-work allows characters to perform variouslevels of "weightless leaping", according to their individuallevels of physical and spiritual density. And though theyalso typically tend to be dominated and driven by images

of male prowess and virility, Lee chooses to strucfure hisfilm around a triad of equally conflicted yet powerfulwomen: Zhang, the undisciplined young girl who maybecome either a demigod or a demon; Yeoh, the maturewoman whose emotional unfulfillment works against herinnaie skill; and Cheng, the mysterious, embittered crone

whose history o{ sexual betrayal has turned her into a

ruthless murderer.

The characters jump, float or fly at will, as well as withoutapparent effort. Mu Bai can defz gravity completely, eitherbecause he's genuinely enlightened or because hisarrogance makes him detached from the human condifion;Shu Liery on the other hand, can only jump and glidebecause she's still rooted in the material world, literallypressed down by a weight of unspoken emotion.

In other words, with a world as fully realized as Crouchirtg

Tiger's there's no middle ground left for cynics or doubtersto stand on. This is a waking dream of truly operaticdimensions, - Film.com

wHtltIsltAYsI'REE AD}TISSION. WEIRD }TOI'IESEarlier this yea1, the Alamo purchased an archive of Drive-In feature films from a long-abandoned distributionfacility in southern Missouri. The titles in the collectionhave been, for the most part, tragically neglected andforgotten by the population at large. Drive-In theaters, and the types of movies they once offered are all butforgotten from the American landscape. The paltry fewthat are still up and running generally show the same tripeas the local multiplex. The Roger Cormans of the worldjust don't make these movies anymore.

italian horror, German so{t-core sex films, zombie revengepictures, good-ol-boy chase pictures and talvdryexploitation of every angle imaginable. Sure, lots of these

pictures just plain suck" or certainly aren't for all tastes.

But more often than not, you will unearth a rare gem of afilm, a film so fresh that it completely blows your mind. That is our intention with this series. We want to wadethrough these films and discover those gems together.

We will be featuring a different film from the archive everyWednesday night at midnight starting on February 21. Forarchival purposes, we will give everyone at the screeningan evaluation form with inspection information and a

place for a review. We are setting up an online database

for reviews and synopses to be recorded (Many of thefilms we will be screening are uncharted territory, some

don't even have an IMDB entry). We have also purchaseda state of the art film cleaning system to wipe away the 25

years of accumulated dust as we watch the films.

Admission is {ree for this series, and hopefully that willlower the threshold for experimentation. The series kicksoff with Shockwaaes, an underwater nazi zombie movie, and rolls through Kung Fu, 80's traslu ltalian conventhorror and sexploitation. More to come, everyWednesday night at midnight!

Pity poor Greg Focker. Not only is the manemployed as a male nurse with an un{orfunatename, but he's about to meet his girlfriend'sparents in order to ask dad for her hand inmarriage. Only dad is about as humorless as,

say, Robert De Niro. And poor Greg can't doanything right to save his skin.

De Niro comes off surprisingly perfect as thestraight man to Ben Stiller's streetwise doofus, equally apt in his role as the guy who will neverbe good enough for daddy's little girl (TeriPolo).

As things like this tvpically go, nothing worksout, and before long the septic tank hasoverflowed, a fire has been started, and anincident involvlng a champagne bottle, an urn,and a very naughty cat have fi1led your eyeswith tears so thick you can't see the screen.Which is no good, because you can't hearanything either due to all the laughter. I literallyfound myself gasping for breath &tring Meet theParents' most comic moments, wishing I couldrewind the film.

Director lay Roach (Austin Powers) handles thecamera well, framing Focker in scenes thatwould be worthy of The Fugitiae if they weren'tso furuly. But perhaps the best part of the film isits ending, which leaves plenty of room for atleast two sequels. Like me, I'm sure you'll behoping they decide to make them before you'reeven back to the parking lot. -filmcritic.com

(d. Tim Burton, 1985, PG, $5, 18 and up) "The plot concernsPee-Wee's quest to find his stolen bike (the love of his life); a

quest which takes him from his hometown all the way toTexas, by way of a fortune teller, a life-size plastic dinosaur, and some of the weirdest characters ever committed tocelluloid. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, like all Burton films, takes place in a world that is recognizably our own, butunmistakably alien. With its pastel pinks and its neongreens, with its ghostly truck drivers and its motorcyclegangs, with its unsettling blend of whimsical naivet6 anddark menace, Pee-Wee's world is one of the most fascinatingplaces you will ever spend an hour and a half." - EdinboroghUniztersity Film Societtl, Before the film see Pee-Wee's anti-crack cocaine PSA and original Pee Wee Herman stand-upcomedy routines. In this alternate universeClaudia Jemings was the queen of the movies. She was abeauiiful redhead who could really act, and could har.eprobably been a Hollywood star if she had wanted to. Butyou can't help but feel she loved playing strong, independent women in films like Truck Slo1t Aotnctt.Moonshine County Express, The Great Texas Dyttamite Clnse,David Cronenberg's little-known hotrod movie FnslClmpnny, and Ferd and Beverley Sebastian's classic GntorBalf. She's ar\resome as the swamp-dwelling Cajun hellcatwho gets pushed too far by a bunch of very scarv redneckscumbags who seem extremely inbred (probably calculatedby the filmmakers to flatter the audience by comparison). Afinal note about Claudia Jennings: in 1979, despondent overa break-up with her longtime boyfriend and being narrowlyrejected by Aaron Spelling as a replacement "Charlie'sAngel", she died in a one-car accident in Malibu. She wasonlv 29.

(1978, d. Lou Adler, R, $5, 18 and up) The first thirtyminutes of Up In Snoke may be the best film sequence inpot smoking history. However, its greatness provides uswith a paradox nearlv as mind-boggling as it is {unny. Is itpossible that Cheech and Chong can really be acting thiswell, or is this movie achraill, an improvised skit by twothoroughly baked comedians? But if they were, how couldthey have the patience and stamina for the endless hours ittakes to shoot even the most standard of scenes? But if theyweren't, how could they have the spontaneity that soobviously permeates the performance? If you can figure outhow these two pulled off thirty of the furuliest minutes inmovie history, then you are huly a better man than I.In t er net Moaie D at ab ase

(1938, d. Michael Curtiz & William Keighley, all ages, freeadmission for kids and accompanying adults) It's hard tosee how Errol Flynn, as Sir Robin of Locksley, could be anymore dynamic or athletic. He catapults onto the backs ofhorses, shins up thick ivy stems and leaps joyously intobattle. There's just so much energy and zest in Flynn'sperformance that the movie buzzes even when he's off-screen. Even better, Flynn handles the dialogue (whetherwitty or poignant) with a practised ease...It looks fabulous, stirs the blood and has a score to match the action at everyturn; this is the definitive filming of Robin Hood. excerpted
