The zeal of Judson and other New England students led to the formation of the American Board of Commissions for Foreign Missions which, in 1812, appointed Judson and five others to be Americas first foreign missionaries. On board ship during the long voyage to India, Judson studied the Scriptures and was converted to a Baptist position and, upon arriving in India, was baptized by William Carey. Judson soon found that he could not remain in India and that he lacked the support of any American group since his change in views. This led to the establishment of the Baptist General Missionary Convention and Judsons own removal to Burma, a new field. He concentrated his efforts on preparation of linguistic tools, but political opposition soon set in and Judson was imprisoned for nine months. Eventually he was quite influential in concluding a peace between Burma and England in the War of 1824. He finally completed a translation of the Bible in Burmese and trained countless indigenous workers at the mission. Judson became the role model for overseas missionaries. Ann Hasseltine Judson (17891826) was the first wife of Adoniram Judson and exerted a profound influence upon the role of women in the nineteenth century and the proclamation of the gospel in Burma. Her roots were in Massachusetts, yet she shared the global vision of her spouse when he was appointed in 1812. She agreed with his change in attitude about baptism, and she, too, was immersed by William Carey. She assisted in the preparation of Judsons Burmese Bible, and during his incarceration in Burma, she made numerous attempts to secure his freedom and to continue his work. Her sacrifices were recaptured in several books and were widely read in nineteenth-century America. One writer has asserted that Ann Judson provided an ideal role model for young Christian women and a catalyst for organized womens endeavors though most of her life was spent outside the U.S. Philippines native Alberto Golidan Jr. grew up in the mining town of Coto Mines, Maslinlac, about a 6 hour drive north of the nations most populous city, Quezon. The oldest of 8 siblings, young Alberto felt the sting of ethnic discrimination stating that we were often times ridiculed and looked down upon by our neighbors because of our ethnicity. It was not easy living in that mining town in those days, as he would fish in the Coto River for food, gather firewood, and even mine chromites to sell when he was not in school. Alberto attended Roman Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the Philippines, but during his second year in high school, his father and mother became part of a Baptist home Bible study that transitioned into a chapel. One afternoon, while attending church with his parents, he heard the good news of the gospel and trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. Following the pattern in the book of Acts, Alberto, whose favorite Bible verses are Ephesians 2:8-9, was baptized by immersion (in the beautiful Coto River) and then joined the church. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the Baptist Bible Seminary and Institute in metropolitan Manila. It was there I met my beautiful wife Edith! Quezon City native Edith had always wanted to be a nurse, but the Lord led me to the Bible Seminary first. Her parents had been saved through the ministry of Baptist missionaries and her father worked in the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism (ABWE) Printing Press. Life was good for young Edith until a terrible accident took the life of her father in March, 1963, as her parents were riding a taxi on the way to church. She recalls that the following years were so difficult for my family but through the help of those Baptist missionaries, my six siblings and I ended up in a Christian orphanage. Edith questioned why God would have taken her father at such an early age. Remembering those dark days, she admits hating the orphanage and rebelling against God. Through it all, I praise the Lord for growing up in that orphanage where we were taught to work hard and disciplined properly. She testifies that Romans 8:28 became clear to me that all things work together for goodas all 7 children in her immediate family have trusted Christ as their personal Savior. After meeting Alberto some years later in Bible school, the two were married in the Philippines on March 20, 1980. Having received a B.S. in Nursing, Alberto took advantage of a nursing shortage here in the US, coming to this country on September 30, 1988, leaving his wife and 3 young daughters in the Philippines. He declares that God was so good to us, as we were all reunited here as a family less than 5 years later. He currently is employed as a nurse at Fresenius Kidney Care Dialysis in Northfield. Edith, whose favorite Bible verses are John 10:27-28, is a nurse at Egg Harbor Care Center. The couple first attended one of Mainland Baptist s Easter Sunrise Services and became members on March 26, 2017. Along with their daughter Jennifer, her husband Michael and grandson, Michael Jr., the Golidans also attend the 9:30 am Sunday morning RU Adult Bible Class, praising God for the warmth and family-like atmospherethat characterizes Mainland Baptist Church. “Use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” - Galatians 5:13b

Every act of love rendered for His sake is noted and has eternal

consequences. Every place, no matter how small, is holy ground.

Influence is more than lofty acts and words. Influence can be a simple

matter of human helpfulness such as being present, listening,

understanding, loving, and praying. This is what turns daily duty into

worship and service. The apostle Paul challenged the Colossians,

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord

Jesus...” and “...do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Know-

ing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inher-

itance...” (Col. 3:17a, 23b-24a).

God takes notice and delights in using us. A good prayer is, Dear

Lord, may I be willing to be hidden and unknown today, yet ready to

speak a word to those who are weary. May Your Spirit touch my

words and make them Your words that enrich and refresh others. The

way to accomplish much for Christ is to serve Him in any way we can.

Serve One Another!

Mother’s Day Picture Flower Craft Idea Items Needed: All simple supplies that can be found at Dollar Tree

-1 piece of colored paper (8.5″ x 11″), 2 muffin wrappers, 1 green paper straw, white glue, a small piece of floral foam, small pot (I used seed started pots), 1 picture of a cute kid, scissors, stapler, colorful candy, marbles, rocks – anything to give the pot a little

weight, paints (optional) to paint the pots

Paint the pots. Cut a piece of Styrofoam to fit into the pot with an x-acto or scissors. Just gives it a little more stability. Download a simple flower template. Cut your flower out as well as a small circle. Print out one of Mom’s favorite pictures. A wallet size picture onto a 4×6 piece of photo paper is recommended. The circle gives you a template for your picture. Using a pencil, trace the circle and then cut it out.

Next you’re going to attach the straw to the flower using the stapler. Then attach one of the muffin wrappers to the flower over the straw. Using some glue, apply to the back of the picture then onto the muffin wrapper. The last step is to cover the foam and push the second muffin wrapper into the bottom of the pot. Using the scissors, make a small hole in the middle of the wrapper and then poke your straw down into the pot and into the foam.

My husband’s family is from southwest Colorado, so I have had the opportunity to vacation there with my family many times. I always enjoyed taking daytrips, driving up into the majestic Rocky Mountains and seeing the wonders of God’s creation. As we drove, I would often find myself saying, “Look at that view!” But after time, I began noticing that there was less vegetation the higher we went in elevation. As we would make our way back down the valley, we saw beautiful farms, lush gardens, and an abundance of trees. It was during those country drives that God taught me several lessons regarding spiritual growth.

1. The view from the mountaintop was awesome. 2. Little growth took place on top of the mountain. 3. There were many twists and turns getting to the top. 4. At times, it was even scary getting to the top. 5. Real growth took place in the valleys.

In our life’s journey, we will find ourselves either enjoying the mountaintop experiences or fearing the dark lonely valleys. God intends for both experiences to be for our good. So, today if you find yourself down in the valley, dig deeper into God’s Word. Spend more time in prayer. Seek God’s face, and remember that in the valley is where “growing in the Lord” occurs. Maybe you are on the mountaintop. Life is going fairly well for you. The danger of being on the mountaintop is that you may not rely on the Lord like you did in the valley. It seems Christians pray less or serve less when all is well. That’s when you need to enjoy God’s blessings and to thank Him for his goodness. But remember without the growth in the valley, you would never have known the beauty of the mountaintop. Wherever you find yourself today, enjoy the journey! “For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.” Psalm 31:3
