Students will investigate the structure of DNA.

Next Generation Science Standards

Students will observe and understand characteristics inherited from parents.

Students will create a DNA structure to code and decode while identifying certain human traits.

DNA  Structure   DNA  is  in  each  of  your  genes.   DNA  molecules  are  arranged  in  a  special  order  in  a  ladder-‐like  structure  called  a  Double  Helix.

A  molecule  of  DNA  is  made  up  of  millions  of  tiny  subunits  called  Nucleotides.

Nucleotides

Phosphate

Pentose  Sugar

*Base

DNA  Structure   The  phosphate  and  sugar  form  the  backbone  of  the  DNA  molecule,  where  as  the  bases  form  the  “rungs”.

There  are  four  types  of  nitrogen  bases.

The  Four  Bases  of  DNA

A Adenine

TThymine

G Guanine

C Cytosine

Complementary  Bases

DNA  Structure   To  crack  the  genetic  code  found  in  DNA  we  look  at  the  sequence  of  bases

The  bases  are  arranged  in  triplets  called  codons  (coding  triplets)

Decoding  the  Recipe:  Your  Task  is  to  extract  and  investigate  DNA.    You  will  build  a  double  helix  to  solve  for  certain  traits.
