RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Stanford University Determination of Cardiac Output The specific aims of the study are to summarize initial clinical experience using Physio Flow technology for measuring cardiac output at rest and during exercise, characterize cardiac output and other measures of cardiac performance in response to exercise among patients with chronic heart failure to illustrate the potential clinical utility of the devise and to explore the interactions between cardiopulmonary exercise testing and cardiac output responses to exercise in patients with chronic heart failure Millersville University Determination of the Anaerobic Threshold I developed an experimental paradigm that employs near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) methodology to detect the exercise intensity equivalent to the ventilatory breakpoint in both adults and children. The outcomes of my research yielded an experimental model that uses oxygen-hemoglobin and oxygen-myoglobin desaturation rates to compartmentalize aerobic and anaerobic metabolism during dynamic exercise. Validity and Reliability of Fitness-Related Global Positioning Systems I am currently investigating, with Dr. Daniel Keefer, the validity and reliability of fitness-related global positioning systems. University of Pittsburgh Fall 1999-2001 Children’s Hospital Adolescent Exercise Testing involved subjects from the Endocrinology Laboratory of Dr. Silva Arslanian at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Subjects were tested for maximal anaerobic and aerobic power using a Wingate cycle test and treadmill maximal oxygen consumption test, respectively. Responsibilities included administering exercise tests and summarizing the exercise data.
Fall 1998-2001 Development of a Rating of Perceived Exertion Scale for Resistance Exercise is a project directed by Dr. Robert J. Robertson and conducted in the Center for Exercise and Health-Fitness Research for the University of Pittsburgh. This scale uses pictures and verbal descriptors to quantify perception of physical exertion during resistance exercise. Blood lactate measures are taken to determine if perception of exertion is related to blood lactate responses. Responsibilities included research design and data collection.
Summer 1998-2001 Validation of OMNI Perceived Exertion Scale for Children uses a pictorial rating of perceived exertion scale specifically designed for children. Subjects volunteer from the National Youth Sports Program at the University of Pittsburgh. I was responsible for
10
coordinating and scheduling aerobic capacity tests used to validate the scale. I led the exercise teams and completed statistical analysis on the data. Project director is Robert J. Robertson, Ph.D.
Summer 1998-2001 Ginsana Study is a project headed by Dr. Robert J. Robertson, which uses Near Infrared Spectroscopy to study half-time hemoglobin reoxygenation in recreational athletes. The main aim of the study is to see whether Ginsana improves the oxygen supply to the muscle after exercise. Responsibilities included coordinating, scheduling and conducting the exercise tests.
