A critical dictionary of psychoanalysis by Charles Rycroft Nelson, 30s.
The main aim of this book is to give a clear explanation of the terms
used by Freud and his followers, with a description of how they originated and how they are often used in a controversial way. There is a very useful introductory chap- ter which gives some cautionary advice on pitfalls to be avoided in psychoanalytical literature, such as the fallacy of 'explanation by label- ling'. The ideas of other related
authors, apart from actual psycho- analysts, are also included (but not Harry Stack Sullivan). Therefore, it might have been useful to give a brief index of these people, in
addition to the bibliography. However, this volume seems cer-
tain of success and should clear
up many misunderstandings about psychoanalysis. For my part, help- ing to get such terms as extravert
spelt correctly in newspapers and
magazines would alone justify the author's labours.
