Dear Parents / Carers, Hopefully, our school year is settling down now were in Week 6. A full normalweek with swimming lessons completed, teaching staff returned from professional development and the PrincipalsConference. We are very enthusiastic about sharing the messages passed on to us from the Conference with our school community and entrenching new practices in our classroom. Thanks to our new and experienced(I didnt want to refer to old”!) parents who came to our Meet and GreetMorning Tea on Thursday last week. It was a great opportunity to introduce people, to each other and to our school, and to explain some of the customs and practices of our school. 1337 Amiens Road Amiens QLD 4380 T: 4683 3177 F: 4683 3220 M: 0429 833177 E: [email protected] W: [email protected] AMIENS STATE SCHOOL Mens Sana in Copore SanoTerm 1– Week 6 Wednesday 6th March 2019 School Calendar - Term 1 Week 6 Monday 4th March Assembly Tuesday 5th March Student Banking Homebake Wednesday 6th March Ms M & Mrs Kelley aending Staffing Resource meeng Playgroup Thursday 7th March Tuckshop Athlecs Program Friday 1st March Library / Soſtball Week 7 Monday 11th March Assembly Mr Lacey (New ARD) vising Tuesday 12th March Student Banking Homebake Wednesday 13th March Playgroup P&C AGM Thursday 14th March Tuckshop Friday 15th March Naonal Anit- Bullying Day Library / Soſtball “Do Small Things With Great Love” We were lucky to be able to have Lyndell Brown of the Granite Belt Neighbourhood Centre come along as well. Dear Parents / Carers, Hopefully, our school year is settling down now we’re in Week 6. A full “normal” week with swimming lessons completed, teaching staff returned from professional development and the Principals’ Conference. We are very enthusiastic about sharing the messages passed on to us from the Conference with our school community and entrenching new practices in our classroom. Thank you to the many folk who wished us well with our technology upgrade. There were indeed some unbelievers, judging from the chuckles accompanying well-wishes! You will pleased to know that there has been success with upgrading our server. However we are still waiting for the NBN to be cut over. However we maintain our excitement!

Have a wonderful week.

Term 1– Week 6 Wednesday 6th March 2019

From the Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 Classroom

Congratulations to our Students of the Week for week 4. Nicholas, Lilly and Ryder were being Safe by keeping their hands, feet and objects to themselves. During our Positive Behaviour for Learning session on last Monday, Mrs Edwards and the children discussed how they could be Responsible by Taking an active role in the classroom and to think for ourselves . Indii-Lee, James and Lilly were our Students of the Week for Week 5. Well done children. This week we will endeavour to be Respectful by using Whole Body Listening.

Well done to our Super Spellers from last fortnight–. Indiana, Lucas, Riley, and Ryder. Thank you to the parents who assist with homework. Year 1 and 2 children commence Unit 2 C2C activities this week. The Preppies are completing variety of activities around the letter E - “Eggs in the eggcup e.e.e. E says “e” short e sound.

During our Genre sessions, the children will be given many opportunities to look at the characters, discuss the plot, sequence and discuss the format of a narrative and complete worksheets that will scaffold their assessment task. “Crunch, The Rainbow Fish, Rose Meets Mr Wintergarden and Possum Blossum , the sky is falling down under” have been our texts for this unit. Skills and activities to improve our fine motor will be practised daily. These activities enhance our handwriting. Reading Sessions will be looking at the texts “Where do Elephants go at Night”, “How doctors help” and “The Lion City”. During Reading time, the Preppies, practise their Golden words, locate on Bingo mats and then find these words in our Big Book. Golden words for this week – “the, is, a, and,,at and I” Reading time is on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday around 10.00 – please come in and see what goes on.

Patterning, numbers in our environment and the many ways we can represent number and the concept of measurement – looking at the language of chance and data, what and how do we ask relevant questions to gather data, and whether an event is possible, impossible, certain or uncertain to happen will be some of the topics during Maths sessions this week. The children all enjoyed using dice, number lines, counters, white boards and pens to consolidate their learning about counting on and back from a given number relevant to their activities from the week. How can I sort a selection of materials? Why did I sort them this way? Is there any other way we can sort? will be questions asked throughout the week.

Friday, a fortnight ago, as a whole group, we discussed, investigated and researched information on snails and then filled in a “Mind Map” – habitat, features, diet, movement and interesting facts – was completed in dot point. During our Science session last Friday, we located, observed using magnifying glass the features of ants. We discussed habitats, features, diet, movement and interesting facts about ants – arthropod – jointed limbs and 3 sections to its body – head, thorax and abdomen. “ Creatures in our Backyard” sheet to be completed and returned by Friday, please. Our next lesson observing, investigating and researching small creatures we have located in our Backyard.

During HASS the Preppies will be looking at relationships in families and how families can be similar and different. Thank you to the parents who sent along a photo of their family – I’m still chasing a couple. If there are any concerns, please see me asap The older children are comparing and contrasting object and activitiess of the past and present.

Mrs Edwards and the Year One and Two students are enjoying French.

Thank you to the Mums and Dads who assisted with swimming. Your help is very much appreciated.

Library lending continues this Friday. Library book bags are required.

Enjoy your week.

Term 1– Week 6 Wednesday 6th March 2019

From the Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 Classroom

The main difference that students (and visitors to our classroom) will be noticing resulting from our professional development in Leading Learning Collaborative Practice (LLCP) with Dr Lyn Sharratt, will be the display of Learning Intentions and Success Criteria in our classroom. Learning Intentions answer the students ’ question “What am I learning and why?” and Success Criteria answers the questions “How well am I doing?” and “How do I know?”.

In Science this term, students are investigating the relationship between the growth and survival of living things and the physical conditions of their environment. We are using the Queensland Museum’s Backyard Explorer, a learning resource for Biodiversity Assessments. It helps students to appreciate the biodiversity of our own schoolyard. Students will investigate the relationship between the growth and survival of living things and the physical conditions of this environment. In this ecological study, students will find out what native animals and habitats are found in the area that has been marked out of the bush for each group. Photographs and descriptions of findings will be used to produce a digital story.
