    safetydepositbox.Tofacilitateinsurancerecovery,include

    aninventoryofyourvaluableswithphotographsorvideo.

    Learnhowandwhentoshutoffyourutilities.(SeeUtilities.)

    Discussallpossibleexitroutesfromeachroom,buildingand

    neighborhood.Ensurethatyourfamilyhasatleasttwoexits

    fromeach.

    Decidewhereyouwillreuniteafteradisaster.Choosetwo

    places,oneoutsideyourhomeandanotheroutsideyourneighborhood,likeaparkorotheropenarea.

    ConductemergencydrillsandpracticeDROP,COVERand

    HOLDatleastonceeverysixmonths.

    Alwayskeepyourcarsgastankatleasthalffull.

    Steps to Make Yor Home Sae

    Besureyourhomesstreetnumberisvisiblefromthestreet,

    soemergencyvehiclescanndyou.

    Inyourhome,installatleastonesmokealarmoutside

    ofeachsleepingareaandoneadditionalalarmoneachadditionallivinglevel,includingthebasement.Ifhallwaysare

    longerthan40feetbetweenthesleepingandlivingareas,

    usetwosmokealarms.Testeverysixmonthsandreplace

    batteriesonceeachyear.

    KeepatleastoneABCtypereextinguisheroneachlevel

    ofyourhome.Learnhowandwhentousethem.Checkthe

    pressuregaugesannuallytoensuretheyarefullycharged.

    Keephallwaysandexitsclearforeasyevacuation.Ensure

    Ensurethatvaluableelectronicsandtall,largeorheavy

    familymembersincaseofevacuation.

    StoreyourHouseholdDisasterKitinaplacethatwillstillbe

    accessibleifyourhomeisdamagedandunsafetoenter(e.g.

    abackyardshed).Ifthisisnotanoption,putitinaneasily

    betweenthefamilymembersaffectedbythedisasterand

    duringapoweroutage.

    Displayemergencynumbersbesideeachtelephone.

    Inadisaster,watersuppliesmaybecutofforcontaminated.

    Storeenoughwaterforeveryoneinyourfamilytolastforat

    east 3 days. Storeonegallonofwaterperperson,perday.Thisamount

    willbeadequateforgeneraldrinkingpurposes.Threegallons

    perpersonperdaywillgiveyouenoughtocookandfor

    limitedpersonalhygiene.Remembertoplanforyourpets.

    Tapwaterfromamunicipalwatersystemcanbesafely

    storedwithoutadditionaltreatment.

    Storewaterinfoodgradeplasticcontainers,suchasclean

    2-litersoftdrinkbottles.(1gallon=approx.4liters.)Heavy

    duty,reusableplasticwatercontainersarealsoavailableat

    sportinggoodsstores.

    Emptymilkbottlesarenotrecommendedbecausetheirlids

    donotsealwellandbottlesmaydevelopleaks.

    Replacewateratleastonceeverysixmonths.

    Treating water ater Disaster:

    spawater,butyoucanuseitforushingtoiletsorwashing.

    Treatment Process:

    Beginbystraininganylargeparticlesofdirtbypouringthe

    waterthroughacoupleoflayersofpapertowelsorcleancloth.

    Next,purifythewateroneoftwoways:

    Boi

    bringtoarollingboilandmaintainfor3-5minutes.Afterthewatercools,pouritbackandforthbetweentwo

    cleancontainerstoaddoxygenback;thiswillimproveits

    taste.

    DisinectIfthewaterisclear,add8drops(1/8teaspoon)

    ofbleachpergallonofwater.Ifitiscloudy,add16drops

    (1/4teaspoon)pergallon.Makesureyouareusingregular

    bleach5.25%percentsodiumhypochloriteratherthan

    theultraorcolorsafebleaches.Shakeorstir,thenlet

    stand30minutes.Aslightchlorinetasteandsmellisnormal.

    Theareaaroundswitchesorplugsisblackenedand/
