Where has the summer gone? MyPastor used to always say once the 4thof July comes, the rest of the summerblows by. And each year it seems to begoing faster and faster. I am sure thesummer is never long enough for ourkids that are in school but as I thinkback to my youth, I do remember beingready to go back to school after thesummer vacation. It has been a verybusy summer with the QuadrennialConvention, Golf outing, and vacation,but I enjoyed every day of the men-tioned events.As we wind down the summer

months, I see on the schedule for Sep-tember a trip to the Akron Zoo for As-sembly 0731 members, a cookout atthe Medved’s for Assembly 0381, aride on the Gateway Clipper for Assem-bly 0123 members in addition to As-sembly 0039 hosting a Bar B-Q andAssembly R019 holding the 120th Annual Celebration at Sts. Peter & PaulOrthodox Church.Speaking about Celebrations, the

NSS will be 125 years old in 2015 andwe are planning an Anniversary Banquetto be held in the Pittsburgh area onSaturday, March 7th, 2015. So markyour calendars and plan on attendingthis once in a lifetime event. We havecome a long way from our founding in1890 when our treasury had $600.00until today when our assets are over$750 million dollars. We have manypeople to thank for the vision they hadin 1890 and for the leadership over the125 years; especially through the

tough times of the depression andother times of economic instability.What greater way to honor our prede-cessors then to attend this special Anniversary Banquet?

Hearing LossHappy I recently came across an arti-

cle regarding hearing and since my wifeis always telling me I should have myhearing checked, I thought this mightbe of interest to many of our readers.If you have trouble hearing, you’re

not alone. More than 25 million Ameri-cans have hearing loss, including oneout of four people older than 65. Hear-ing loss may come from infections,strokes, head injuries, some medicines,tumors, other medical problems, oreven too much ear wax. It can also re-sult from repeated exposure to veryloud noise, such as music, power tools,or jet engines. The way the ear workschanges as a person ages which alsocan affect hearing. The good news isthat for most people who have a hear-ing loss, there are ways to fix the prob-lem. So if you have trouble hearing,visit your doctor to find out if you havea hearing loss and how to treat it.Some of the symptoms of hearing loss are:* People say you’re shouting when you talk to them;

* you need the TV or radio turned uplouder than other people do;

* you have to ask people to repeat what they say because you can’t quite hear them; especially in

groups or when there is background noise;

* you can’t hear a noise if you’re not facing the direction it’s coming from;

* you seem to hear better out of one ear than the other;

* you have to strain to hear;* you keep hearing a hissing or ringing background noise;

* you can’t hear a dripping faucet or the high notes of a violin.

If you have any of these symptoms, seeyour doctor so you can be tested forhearing loss.To find out what kind of hearing loss

you have and whether all the parts ofyour ear are working okay, your doctormay want you to take a hearing test.These tests are often given by a health-care professional that specializes inhearing, such as an audiologist. Audiol-ogists are usually not medical doctorsbut are trained to give hearing testsand interpret the results. Hearing testsare painless. If the hearing test showsthat you have a hearing loss, there maybe one or more ways to treat it. Possi-ble treatments include medication, sur-gery or a hearing aid. Hearing aids canusually help hearing loss that involvesdamage to the inner ear. This type ofhearing loss is common in older peopleas part of the aging process. But youngerpeople can also have it from infectionsor repeated exposure to loud noises.Not everyone with a hearing problem

can be helped by a hearing aid. Yourdoctor or hearing health-care profes-sional is the best person to know if ahearing aid might help you. You shouldhave your hearing tested by a specialistbefore you buy a hearing aid. It’s bestto get your hearing test from a licensedhearing professional. If the hearing testshows that you need a hearing aid, youwill get a note or prescription sayingyour hearing has been tested and youneed a hearing aid. The note may alsosay what kind of hearing aid the hearinghealth-care professional recommends.

The Second Opinionfrom the Vice-President

Dean Burns, FICNational Vice-President

PerceptionThe following lines are from Pippa

Passes a dramatic poem by RobertBrowning,

“The year’s at the spring,And day’s at the morn;

Morning’s at seven;The hill-side’s dew-pearled;

The lark’s on the wing;The snail’s on the thorn;God’s in His heaven—

All’s right with the world!”The timing of this song renders it

deeply ironic. In reality, Pippa is pass-ing through the countryside amid mur-der and other kinds of deviant behavior,but for her, God is in his heaven and allis right with the world making the songdeeply ironic. She saw what she wantedto see, not reality, and that made herview of things acceptable to her.Like Pippa, I have spent much of my

time skipping through life seeing it as Iwished it to be rather than as it is. Oh,I knew from the television news thatmany, many people left a lot to be de-sired. Parents kill their own children,Countries bomb their own citizens.Politicians sell out their integrity formoney, sex, and/or power. Friends willlet you down. People will break rules

and do questionable things. There aremore divorces than marriages. Childrenmight disappoint you. The list is end-less. But through it all, I could main-tain hope that God is still payingattention and good will prevail… mostof the time. Yes, people tell me that Iam naive and will be disappointed.Maybe I will. But I choose not to beone of the people who predict doom. INEED to have faith in the basic good-ness of my fellow humans. We used to have a weather man who

predicted doom every day. Beautifulsummer sunshine and he said it wouldrain one day I asked him why he didthat. He told me that if he predictedsun and it rained on people’s picnics,they would be angry with him. But if hepredicted rain, and it was sunny, peo-ple were happy. Nice idea for makingpeople be happier, but he is not theweatherman any more. People wantedaccurate predictions rather than fauxhappiness.

TruthI am one of the people who needs

the truth and needs to know why thingsare as they are. I know that is inconsis-tent with the first paragraph where Isaid I tried to go through life carefree.But, once I discover that somethinghas happened which wasn’t so good, Iask “ why” and “how could they”, andevery other question I can come upwith. I have a friend (I really do) andwhen I ask those questions, she asksme why I ask them when I know thatthe answers will disappoint me. Asnear as I can tell, there are two rea-sons. First. I am nosy as hell. Secondly,I hope, against hope, that evil neverhappened and my friends are honestand upright. Actually, the first reason isthe more important one.Wouldn’t life be better if people and

countries, and corporations kept theirword? Thirteen people would not bedead if GM had fixed those ignition

switches when they first found outabout them. Yes, corporate profitsmight have been lower, but God pro-tects us from businessmen who placemoney above safety. Or, more egre-giously, leaders of countries who sacri-fice the nation’s youth to try to be thetoughest bully on the schoolyard. Iknew people who died in Korean andIraq, and Afghanistan. To me, all threecountries are not worth the life (or injury) of one American child. But oldmen rant against other countries andwant to invade everyone for real orimagined offenses. Unfortunately,those old men are our political leadersand we send them back to Washington.Modern society has established laws

to deal with offenses. We don’t reallyexpect to poke out an eye for an eye. Itjust means that the punishment shouldfit the crime. We fill buildings with of-fenders who serve years of prison timeand only learn to be better crooks. Allof which wastes our resources. No, I do not have a better solution. I

just see the fallacy of continuing to doas we have in the past. That is why Iask a lot of questions. I think it is alsowhy Pippa is my compatriot. If onedoes not see the evil, it is easier to ac-cept. Of course, I also accept that Godis in His heaven and what is happeningis His plan and I am just not privy toknowing exactly what the end plan is.Man, I hope that is it or some sem-blance of that.Meanwhile, I will go on looking for

the Good and forgiving the Bad. Itmakes it easier for me. I know thou-sands of good people who do charitableacts and serve the NSS as it tries tofulfill its fraternal mission. Remember,“If each one reaches one, we will do alot more good.” I, and others, arecounting on you.

NSS Sales Department

From the Sales Depart-ment...By Greg Felton, CLU, ChFC

National Sales Director

Watch Your Money GrowInterested in opening an IRA or a Roth IRA account? The maximum contri-bution for IRAs in 2014 is $5,500 and if you are age 50 or older you maycontribute an additional $1,000 for a $6,500 total. IRAs may be tax-de-ductible and a Roth IRA may be tax-free if you adhere to the rules.Here is how quickly your money can grow in an NSS annuity. Thesefigures use a Preferred 8 annuity currently paying 3.50% interestwith a 2.0% lifetime minimum guarantee.

Years $100 / month $5,000 per year5 $ 6,556 $27,75110 $14,343 $ 60,71015 $23,591 $ 99,85520 $34,576 $146,34725 $47,621 $201,56630 $63,115 $267,147

You can open an account with a $1,000 minimum or $100 per month. An interest-ing point about the $100 per month plan is this – at age 65 (after 30 yrs.), a$63,115 account could pay you almost $400 per month in a single premium imme-diate annuity account. So in a sense you saved a $100 to get a $400 return. The$267,147 account would pay $1,600 per month for life in a SPIA. Of course youcould always take the lump sum. This is another example of a 400% return on yourmoney. Why wait – get started now and pay yourself first.

Life InsuranceAwareness MonthEvery September the insurance

industry promotes life insurance.Believe it or not life insurance can dosome pretty amazing things. It can buyloved ones time to grieve, it can pay offdebts, it can make dreams come trueand it can have a lasting effect.This year’s spokesperson is Boomer Es-iason. The former NFL quarterback forthe Cincinnati Bengals was an all proand even played in one Super Bowl. Asa youngster Boomer lost his mother tocancer at the age of 7. His father hadto work several jobs to help maintainthe family. He and his sisters learned ahard life lesson early on. Life insur-ance sure would have made their liveseasier or at least Dad would have beenaround more. Today Boomer is married,has two grown children and he is wellinsured. His primary goal is to teachhis children the importance and valueof having a quality insurance program.The facts are unbelievable with an esti-mate of almost 100 million peoplewithout any personal life insurance.Yet, 50% of this group would like someinsurance they just don’t know howmuch or what kind to buy? 8 out 10people guessed that the insurance wastoo expensive but they were incorrect.For a free quote please contact your

local NSS representative or call Joe El-liott in the Home Office. We can help you with the greatest

financial product ever devised – afford-able life insurance.

Pre-Need InsuranceWhat is the first thing you think of when someone mentions life insurance? Believe

it or not most people think about funeral costs and last expenses. If you have everhad to make arrangements for someone then you know there are a lot of decisions tobe made at a sad time. Here’s a partial list of some of the responsibilities that haveto be done when a person dies:

Meet with a funeral director Decide on final arrangementsSelect casket and vault Secure cemetery plotContact a minister Meet with floristWrite an obituary Contact bank, Social Security, etc.File insurance claim Choose pallbearers

One of the ways to avoid this is to pre-plan your funeral. Most families feel im-mense relief when they realize that all of the necessary details of a loved one’s fu-neral were planned in advance. Pre-planning provides you with peace of mind andrelieves you of the enormous emotional burden that otherwise would be your respon-sibility. Pre-planning ensures that your wishes are carried out and everything is paidfor in advance.What you should do is meet with your local funeral director and talk about these

options. You might ask him or her if they use NSS Life Pre-Need products. We ex-panded into this market a couple of years ago because it was a natural extension ofthe products we were already marketing.At NSS Life Pre-Need we offer a single premium life insurance plan which can be

guaranteed issue. This plan also features a 3% growth factor which helps offset therising cost of inflation. For this market there is also an annuity available that is pay-ing 3.0% interest. Both of these products are only available through funeral homesand to residents of PA and OH. So be sure to tell your local funeral director that you would like to use NSS Life

Pre-Need products. They can call us for a kit and sign up for free.

Butwin Family Reunion

The 2014 Butwin Family Reunion is now a part of history. When the family, with many Assembly 705 members, gathered in Seelyville, IN on July 5-6 they celebrated the love of family and tradition. There were 138 family members in attendance at some point during the two days. We were surprised on the morningof the reunion to learn that our newest family member, Margaret Tribble, was born.The reunion was held in Seelyville where John & Anna Butwin (founding membersof Assembly 705) settled to raise their family. The family still gathers at John &Anna's home where two of their grandchildren live.The reunion began with an Opening Ceremony led by Frank Butwin, one of the

newest members of Assembly 705. He spoke about the unique way our family hasmanaged to stay together. As a group, the family sang the National Anthem andthe eldest in the family Helen M. Meunier, Dorothy Jones and Betty Butwin de-clared the Reunion open. The family picture was taken and then each of the eightcore families introduced their individual members. The com hole tournament wasthe first activity to start. Jim & John Tribble were crowned com hole champions atthe end of the day. The bocci set came out and people played that traditionalgame. After a lunch of Subway sandwiches, the kids participated in a BounceHouse, Fish Pond and slip-n-slide. The euchre tournament was held with a dozenor more players. Jim Tribble won and could boast about his championship. It was aperfect day weather-wise. Everyone spent time visiting and catching up on thenews of the family.Jack's Fine Foods provided a delicious dinner. After dinner, the GREAT RACE

tradition continued. Two teams were pitted against each other as they went througha series of relay events. The youngsters took over this year and provided an enter-taining competition. Jeanne & Brent Zhome created a "Butwin Trivia contest" wherethree teams battled it out for family knowledge supremacy. It was fun as well aseducational."Celebrations Through the Years" was the theme of the 2014 "slide show". Mary

Ellen Buck did a great job of putting together this history of our family gatherings.The children of George & Peggy Butwin cooked a wonderful breakfast on Sundaymorning and everyone pitched in to clean up. Soon the yard was back to normaland everyone went their separate ways.

A new tradition for 2014 was a non-perishable food collection. Everyone inattendance was encouraged to bring afood item. We donated to the St. Vincentde Paul Society chapter at AnnunciationParish, the Brazil, IN Food Pantry and St.Benedict Catholic Church Soup Kitchen.The time passed much too quickly. TheReunion was over and everyone began tolook forward to 2016.
