hen it comes to high-techcomponents such as tur-

bochargers, airbags andtransmissions, automakers

often want their suppliers supersized the bigger, the better.

But that hasnt been the case with interiortrim. Instead, the segment has remainedstubbornly fragmented, in part because au-tomakers have resisted ordering completeinteriors from suppliers. That leaves variousvendors shaving pennies off the prices of their glove boxes, instrument panels, con-soles, carpeting and door panels.

But now, the interiors market appears tobe restructuring, step by step.

A core group of interior suppliers isemerging an eclectic mix of Europeanvendors, a Chinese joint venture and acompany built by a canny Wall Street fi-nanciers string of acquisitions.

It isnt clear yet whether theyll com-pletely consolidate the interiors market,but theyre giving it a try. Heres wherethey stand on Automotive News list of thetop 100 global suppliers: A joint venture announced May 18 of Yanfeng and Johnson Controls expects an-nual sales of $7.5 billion plus a big share of the fast-growing China market. That salesfigure would have placed it 31st on theglobal list last year. French supplier Faurecia, No. 7 on the

list, opened its checkbook in2012 to expand in North Amer-ica by purchasing Fords interi-or trim operation. After a string of 16 acquisi-tions over its eight-year exis-

tence, IAC Group has edged upto No. 42, and now the compa-ny is building a presence inChina.

The Yanfeng-Johnson Con-trols alliance announced lastmonth enjoys intriguing growth prospects.

Yanfeng is owned by the in-house supplier to Shanghai Automotive In-dustry Corp., Chinas biggest automaker.

Last August, Yanfeng acquired Visteonshalf of the Visteon-Yanfeng joint venturethat produced interior parts. The deal al-lowed Visteon to exit the interiors busi-ness, while Yanfeng inherited Visteonsportfolio of products, technology and fac-tories.

With a portfolio of international cus-tomers plus a well-equipped r&d center inShanghai, Yanfeng is a cut above thestereotypical Chinese supplier.

Like Visteon, Johnson Controls wantedto bail out of the interiors sector, and thenew partnership with Yanfeng will allow itto do so. With a 30 percent stake in the joint venture, Johnson Controls will mini-mize its financial exposure, yet reap someprofits as the venture grows.

In a May 16 interview with Automotive News , Alex Moli-naroli, CEO of Johnson Con-trols, said the joint venture with Yanfeng will have a goodmix of customers at the low

and high end of the market.In the interiors segment,

Johnson Controls enjoyedgood sales among premiumbrands, while Yanfeng targetedthe entry-level market.

We believe well be able togain market share, Molinarolisaid. Weve already right-

sized our business in Europe. That busi-ness is profitable.

of IAC, believes interior suppliers canmake money if they focus on the right mar-kets and pick their customers carefully.

During the recession, automakers strug-gled to prop up marginal suppliers anonerous task in the fragmented interiorsmarket. Some automakers learned their les-son and fostered closer relations with theirmost reliable suppliers, Kamsickas said.

Some automakers are really disciplined,and some have regressed to price, priceand more price, Kamsickas said. So sup-pliers have to pick their automaker cus-tomers carefully, he added.

Like JCI and other suppliers, IAC has in-

vested heavily in China while cutting un-needed capacity in Western Europe. Thecompany has 11 plants in China and isadding one new plant per year, Kamsickassaid.

Meanwhile, the company has shuttered

a factory in Germany and will close anoth-er in the Benelux region late this year orearly next year.

Its a step-by-step process, Kamsickassaid. Well follow our customers and putour production capacity where it needs tobe.

IPO in the works?Kamsickas says hes satisfied with his

companys product portfolio, which in-cludes instrument panels, headliners, doorpanels and consoles but not seats orsteering wheels.

Has IAC grown to the point where it canlaunch its long-awaited initial public offer-ing?

On Dec. 5, Bloomberg News reportedthat IAC would delay its IPO until this year.

Now that 2014 is here, Kamsickas de-clined to discuss a possible IPO. But he as-serted that his company is big enough toprosper with or without an industry- wide shakeout.

There already has been enough consoli-dation in high-cost markets, Kamsickassaid. I dont really see that a massive con-solidation would change IACs global posi-tion. c

t first glance, its hard to imaginethat Googles self-driving proto-type, an egg-shaped car with no

steering wheel and a top speedof 25 mph, could force an automotive rev-olution.

In truth, the driverless revolution is al-ready here. The technological building blocks for Googles vehicle such as laneguidance, parking assist, blind-spot detec-tion and intelligent cruise control arespreading rapidly into mass-market vehi-cles for safety.

The big winners from this trend will bethe mega-suppliers with deep pockets tobankroll the necessary r&d.

Key players include Robert BoschGmbH, Denso Corp., Continental AG,TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. and Del-phi Automotive each of which rank inthe top 10 on Automotive News list of thetop 100 suppliers to North America.

In January, consulting firm IHS Automo-tive published a forecast that fully self-dri-ven cars which are expected to debutaround 2025 will be equipped with anti-collision technology worth $7,000 to$10,000 per vehicle in todays dollars.

But suppliers wont have to wait to reapprofits. They are selling the technology forsafety in mass-market vehicles.

Suppliers are steadily improving hardware components such as radar, cameras,lidar and electronic control units. But thetoughest task will be software develop-ment, says IHS analyst Egil Juliussen.

The complexity of the software is suchthat only a few companies can manage allof it, Juliussen said. Others will licensesoftware components from other players.

In March, for example, Continentallaunched production of short-range radar

at its plant in Seguin, Texas. The plant willproduce 3 million radar sensors to beused for blind-spot detection and parking assist in 2016.

Overall, Continental expects its global salesof driver-assistance systems will rise from$680 million this year to $2 billion by 2018.

Collision-avoidance technology is not just for high-end models, said Dean Mc-Connell, Continentals North American di-rector of customer programs for advanceddriver-assistance systems. Its moving in-to trucks and middle segments. All cars, in-cluding affordable cars, are going to havesolutions.

Collision avoidance is big business forBosch as well. The company expects itssales of driver-assistance systems will gen-erate nearly $1.4 billion in global sales by 2016.

The big seller in the companys product

portfolio is radar; by 2016, the company expects it will have sold 10 million radarsensors worldwide.

Frank Sgambati, marketing director of chassis system controls for Robert Boschin North America, says collision avoidancehas gotten a big boost in Europe, whereEuro NCAP rules encourage automakers toadopt safety-assist systems to earn a topcrash rating. NCAP stands for New Car As-sessment Program.

We believe consumer education is thekey to a lot of these technologies, Sgam-bati said.

In the United States, NCAP crash ratingsinclude evaluations of forward collision warnings and lane departure warnings.

Mike Thoeny, Delphi AutomotivesNorth American managing director of electronics controls, predicts that the Na-tional Highway Traffic Safety Administra-

tion will consider incentives for automak-ers to adopt anti-collision devices.

In the meantime, suppliers are trying tomake the technology more affordable onthe assumption that theyll reap big profitsfrom high volume.

For example, Delphi has developed acentral control unit that analyzes datafrom the vehicles array of radar and cam-era sensors.

That allows automakers to use smaller,cheaper sensors since they wont requiretheir own control units.

Driven by consumer awareness andtougher crash ratings, automakers aremoving quickly to expand their use of col-lision-avoidance technology, Thoeny not-ed.
