Lios-na-gCon Ring FortLios-na-gCon is the only Ring fort (Fairy Fort) in Ireland to be reconstructed on its

original site. It includes a central hut, several outhouses, animal pens and an underground souterrain which shows the tunnels which were used for food storage and defence. The restoration project was organized by the Clonakilty Macra na Feirme and is a credit to the heritage of the area. www.liosnagcon.com

Michael Collins CentreThe Michael Collins Centre is a private museum owned by Tim and Dolores Crowley. It is a wonderful place to visit and offers

a comprehensive presentation on the life and times of Michael Collins. There is also a stretch of road which is a replica of the ambush site where Michael Collins was shot and killed. It dramatically includes a replica Crossly Tender armoured car. www.michaelcollinscentre.com

Build a sandcastle at Inchydoney StrandPossibly the most

beautiful beach in west Cork, Inchydoney is a blue flag, family-friendly beach with vast expanses of sand and dunes. There are good surfing and bathing conditions and lifeguards on duty during the peak seasons.

Catch a Shark with Clonakilty Coastal and Deep Sea Charters – Fishing in the Ring Estuary

and Clonakilty Bay is well renowned in the angling community as being some of the best fishing there is due to the diverse natural habitat and the cleanliness of the waters. Shoreline and pier angling are on offer for most part of the year and there are charter boats available for hire.

Clonakilty MuseumThe Clonakilty Museum is a font of information regarding the rich heritage of the area. It traces the local, social and political

history of the area though a variety of interesting displays and collections. For updates on opening times, please find them on facebook. www.facebook.com/ClonakiltyMuseum

Clonakilty Park CinemaCatch one of the

latest Box Office releases at the Park Cinema. A great way to spend some time on a blustery and rainy afternoon. See The Southern Star for cinema listings.

Clonakilty Farmer’s MarketVisit the Farmer’s Market in Recorder’s Alley each Friday to get the best of produce ranging from

meat, vegetables and bread to art, coffee and home baking.

Jungle City Clonakilty was an official Jungle City in 2012 and over 20 jungle animals

are still to be found all over the town. Some, like the elephants and crocodiles are easier to spot but the fun is discovering an exotic bird in a tree or an unusual tiger while you go about your daily shopping or walk around the town.

7 Model Railway Village,

ClonakiltyGet an overview of the area in

miniature by visiting the Model

Railway Village where West Cork is

beautifully captured on a scale of 1:24. The

working replica of the West Cork Railway is

delightful as it chugs along through towns

and countryside. There is also an informative

Exhibition Centre, indoor play room and

cafe facility on-site. The Choo-Choo road

train is a great way to explore Clonakilty. As

it weaves its way through the town, you get

a great glimpse of the historical landmarks,

architecture, shop fronts and squares. The

Village. www.modelvillage.ie

The Henry Ford Ancestral SiteThe Henry Ford Ancestral Site is situated on a piece of the Lisselan Estate. Henry Ford’s grandfather, John Ford, was a tenant farmer of 30 acres on

the site during the 1800s before he emigrated to America with his family during the famine. Learn the full history and see a display of Model T Fords on your visit. www.lisselan.com

Great FoodClonakilty has a unique and charming relationship with

food. It has a thriving Farmers Market and an appreciation of artisan food. Not only was Clonakilty the first town in Ireland to be named a Fairtrade Town (2003) it has also been awarded a Cittaslow status – an internationally recognised achievement that was inspired by the slow food movement.

14 Live MusicClonakilty has its finger on the pulse when it comes to the music scene.

Whether its a traditional music session in one of the pubs, an international gig at the world famous DeBarra’s Folk Club, a melody at Shanley’s Piano Bar or one of the numerous music festivals, Clonakilty will definitely have your foot tapping to a musical beat where-ever you venture.

15

Get your togs on and go for a swim The swimming pool at The Clonakilty Hotel is now open to the public

(no membership) or why not check out the Leisure Club at The Quality Hotel complete with pool, gym and more (membership required).

Clonakilty Church – Stained Glass paradise. You do not have to be an avid church goer to appreciate a visit to the Clonakilty Church. The architecture and stained glass alone attract so much warranted attention that there are now pamphlets on offer at the church giving visitors details on the glass- which are artworks in themselves.

Timoleague is a picturesque village, situated on the Kinsale to Clonakilty coast road (the R600). Perched at

the edge of a long sea inlet this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century abbey. The

abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the site of a 6th century monastic settlement

founded by Saint Molaga. The name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga).

Courtmacsherry village, just a few kilometres down the estuary from Timoleague is one of the true gems of West Cork - it has a wealth of natural beauty and boasts a wide range of leisure activities for the

visitor, such as fishing, boating, kayaking, walking as well as bars and places to eat.

28River Fishing on the Argideen RiverLisselan Estate holds some of the best stretches of private fishing on the Argideen River. There is a mile of double bank fishing with ten named

pools and a mile of single bank fishing offering the best angling for salmon and sea-trout. An experienced ghillie is available on request. www.lisselan.com

McCarthy’s Maze Trail – Rathclaren, KilbrittainThis is the most delightful maze - grown to a different theme each year, the 8ft high maze is spread over 6 acres and is great fun for everyone. Different skill levels and lengths of maze are available so there is something to suit every age and ability. Situated in

Rathclaren and very well signposted. www.mccarthysmazetrail.weebly.com

21Zipwire fun in Kilbrittain playgroundWest Cork has numerous

children’s playgrounds which are all worth visiting but the newly refurbished playground at Kilbrittain deserves a special mention – especially if you fancy testing the zipwire line.

24

Timoleague AbbeyVisit the magnificent remains of a Franciscan Friary which was built in 1240 AD. Friars lived in the

Abbey until 1629. The Friary was burnt by Cromwellian Soldiers in 1642. All the stained glass has been destroyed but the magnificent stonework architecture can still be admired.

19 Birdwatching at Timoleague Estuary The mudflats of the Timoleague Estuary are a haven for birds such as Cormorant, Great Northern Diver, Guillemot, Oystercatcher, Heron, Common Terns and Gulls.20

The Seven Heads PeninsulaDriving the Seven Heads is a most scenic journey. It is a deeply indented and rugged coastline that stretches from Timoleague through

Courtmacsherry, around Dunworley Bay and on to Ballinglanna. Route maps are available in most shops for walkers and show the different routes and their distances. www.sevenheadspeninsula.ie

Kilbrittain Whale Visit the real skeleton of one of nature’s giants - the fin whale. In 2009, this whale beached itself in Burren and despite many efforts to save it, it died. Its bones have now been cleaned and are on display in the picturesque village of Kilbrittain and is very educational to visit.

Kilbrittain Castle and woodland walkThere is a lovely woodland walk which starts at the Village Park and takes in the beautiful view

of the Kilbrittain Castle. The woods are deciduous and there is a lovely waterfall near the entrance.

Abbeyma-hon AbbeySoak up the historic ambience of

Abbeymahon Abbey which was founded in 1172 by the King of Desmond, Dermot MacCormac MacCarthy. It was colonised by a group of Cistercian Monks for over a century. It is amazing to think that the stone-walled structure has survived so many centuries.

27Dunworley Beach - Beachcomb for Treasure After a storm, you may be lucky enough to find one of the coveted blue beads which sometimes get washed up from the depths. The treacherous rocks around the bay caused a few shipwrecks in the past and the beads are thought to come from either the Rover, an Algerian Pirate Ship which

sank in 1631 or from the Amity, an African slave ship which sank in 1700 and which was carrying timber, glass and elephant tusks when it went down.

32The Lagoon Walk Take a gentle scenic stroll around the lagoon in Rosscarbery. The walk will take you over

the causeway and around the lagoon. This is paved and particularly suitable for people who are pushing buggies. Look out for the information boards that give details about the local and migratory birds you may see in the area.

31

The Lagoon Activity CentreRent a paddle boat, kayak or row boat and explore the lagoon from a different perspective. The entire lagoon is no more than 3ft deep at any point and so it makes an ideal and safe venue for beginners and young children. Windsurfing lessons

are also offered on the Lagoon. www.lagoonactivitycentre.ie

Drombeg Stone CircleAlso known as the ‘Druids Altar’, this is a recumbent stone circle consisting of 13 closely spaced stones. Of all the megalithic sites in Ireland, Drombeg is the most visited. A little to the west of the monument are two round stone-walled prehistoric huts

and a fulacht fiadh (cooking place), which features a hearth, a well and a trough in which water could be boiled by the addition of red-hot stones.

Carrigfadda Hill Walk – ReenascreenaThe Carrigfadda Hill Walk is a linear walk of about 3.7km. It has a steep climb to the summit where there is a 7 metre high Marian

post office, pub and school.

Rathbarry is a scenic village located between Clonakilty and

Rosscarbery and was once the home of Lord Carbery. Rathbarry has been

the recipient of several environmental awards and has won regional Tidy

Town competitions.

Castlefreke, situated between Rathbarry and Owenahincha, has some great walks in the through

woods, trails and alongside the local beaches. Castlefreke castle is one of Ireland’s most imposing

ruins and although there is no access to the building or grounds it’s very easy to find and spot from surrounding

roads and is well worth a visit just to take in the view and imagine the history that had gone before

Rathbarry MuseumRathbarry is a quaint, proud village, which has won numerous tidy town awards. It has a delightful

assortment of things to see from Lady Carbery’s Well to the white limestone Celtic Cross which is over 30ft hight and which was erected in memory of the ninth Earl of Carbery. The museum is located adjacent to the post office and shop and depicts life and events of the past in the community.

3837 Long Strand, Dunes and Lighthouse viewsThere are many fabulous walks around Clonakilty, but to walk the beach at Long Strand, Owenahincha, and to explore the sand dunes, is a wonderful way to spend a day.

Whether you take a pleasurable stroll or a mad scramble, its a great way to get in touch with nature and a lungful of fresh sea air.

Castlefreke Woods and TrailsCastlefreke is a gothic ruin which was burnt by Cromwellian forces in 1648. Its most notable inhabitant was Lord Carbery who was noted not for his 3 wives but rather for his antics as a

pilot and his dramatic aeroplane displays over towns. He eventually renounced his title and went to Kenya where he bought a coffee plantation and spent the remainder of his life. The Castlefreke woods are state owned and have a marked trail showing both a linear and a circuit walk.

Rathbarry Sprigging School The Sprigging School was initiated by Lady Carbery in 1825 during a worldwide revival of lace-making. The lace from this school was known as Sprigging lace because its pattern was shaped like a sprig or a spray. Learn how this lace was made, the

poor environment in which it was made and the utensils and equipment used in its manufacture.

35Galley Head Lighthouse – why not stay in a keepers house for a weekend?Galley Head Lighthouse gives superb views over St. Georges Channel. The Lighthouse was built in 1875 and it was from here that the keepers would have

witnessed the tragic loss of the Lusitania in 1915. It is also claimed that Ray Bradbury based his story ‘The Fog Horn’ on a reported sighting of a giant sea serpent off Galley Head in the 1800s. For an authentic experience, why not hire a keepers cottage for the weekend. www.irishlandmark.com/property/galley-head-lightkeepers-house

Rockpool exploringLet your inner marine-biologist loose and spend an afternoon exploring rock pools. You will discover an assortment

of interesting creatures ranging from anemones and snails to starfish, fish and crabs. The Tompot Blenny is one of the most common fish to find in rockpools, it is rather tricky to spot at first as it camouflages itself really well against sand and rock. At low tide, Owenahincha and Warren Strand have some lovely pools to investigate.

40 Castle Salem and the Quaker GraveyardVisit the amazing Castle Salem which is Ireland’s best preserved 15th

century castle. Built in 1470 by Catherine, daughter of the Earl of Desmond, the castle has been carefully restored and maintained by the Daly Family. Get a daily tour and admire the 11ft thick walls or rent the converted barn for a weekend getaway. There is a tranquil Quaker Graveyard nearby. www.castlesalem.ie

Horseriding Explore West Cork’s beautiful countryside and beaches on horseback. Lessons are available at many venues throughout the county and many establishments have excellent bridle paths and routes for riders to explore. Ask

locally for pony trekking and stables. www.irishhorsesociety.com

Feeling fit? Clonkilty hosts a very popular 10km/half marathon/full

marathon event every December so why not come and visit again and this time take in the beautiful views whilst pounding our roads and lanes. www.runclon.ie

43GeocachingGeocaching has caught on in west Cork like wildfire. It is a great activity to get involved in as it combines love of the outdoors with sophisticated modern technology. Geocaching is not unlike a traditional treasure hunt where X marks the spot – here, a GPS co-ordinate marks the spot and ‘cachers’ will find a stash that they can record and add to. www.geocachingireland.com

hole courses at Dunmore Golf Club, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean or at Lisselan, which has the tranquil Arigideen River running through it, or if you’re perfecting your swing at Rosscarbery driving range or simply enjoying a round of Pitch and Putt overlooking Warren Strand, you will have a memorable day.

The West Cork Drama Festival has its home here - see www.rossmoretheatre.com for more details

Sports mad? Why not experience Gaelic games? If you’re staying in or near Clonakilty why not take in a

GAA game at the local club’s fantastic compex and club grounds in Ahamilla? Check out The Southern Star sports section for the latest local GAA football and hurling fixtures across the area. www.clonakiltygaa.ie

See a ‘Road Bowling’ match Road bowling is played mostly in Armagh and County Cork,

particularly West Cork in which com-petitors attempt to take the fewest throws to propel a metal ball along a predetermined course of country roads. Big crowds of spectators often line the roads to watch, bet on the outcome and proffer advice to their favoured competitor in the course of a match or “score”. To find out whether a match is planned nearby ask locally or visit www.southernstar.ie/sport.

49

Visit an old time Threshing festival Old time threshing days and vintage fairs can be

found throughout West Cork across the summer months. They celebrate the historic traditions of rural Ireland and rural life at harvest time. You’ll find old tractors and machinery, often beautifully maintained and restored are on show as well as other attractions for the family and kids. See Southern Star newspaper for details.

48

Take a drive, marvel at our sceneryOur final suggestion is to simply jump in your car on a nice sunny day and enjoy the views, espe-

cially if you take the coastal roads wherever possible. Here’s a suggested route :Clonakilty, Courtmacherry, Timoleague back to Clo-nakilty, Inchydoney, Dunmore, Ardfield, Rathbarry, Castlefreke, Owenahincha, Rosscarbery and then back to Clon via the N71 for a nice cup of tea!
