Mathematics: In math, students began the school year reviewing place value and understanding numbers. Currently, students are working on multiplying single and double digit numbers. Students will continue to work on multiplication by learning strategies to multiply three and four digit numbers by one and two digits. We will also emphasize word problems and understanding keywords to help solve the problems. The best way to help your child is to drill multiplication tables. This could be mini-quizzes, index cards, or online resources such as www.kahnacademy.org and games. Students NEED TO KNOW their multiplication tables in order to master fluency with their facts.

English Language Arts: In ELA/Writing, students are engaged in our “Family Unit.” This unit allows the students to explore the question “What makes an ideal family?” Throughout the unit, students will be reading stories that showcase different types of families and explore the dynamics that exist within families. Students will also construct writing pieces about what an ideal family means to them, answering the question, “What makes an ideal family?” As we continue this unit, students will learn that no two families are alike. While differences in families do exist, those differences make families unique. Students will be writing essays and creating presentations to demonstrate their learning. To help with reading fluency, make sure your child is reading every night. Getting into a “reading routine” helps your child build stamina.

Science with Ms. Sass Our fourth graders are getting started with our new unit- Environment. We have been discussing the differences between an environment, a habitat and an ecosystem. Soon we will be conducting our first experiment making terrestrial environments. After, we will be using beetles and isopods to learn about preferred environments. Discuss different animals and their habitats with your child. Go to the library and take books our on animals and their environments, or watch nature shows about different animals and their habitats.

Physical Education with Mr. Reynolds: In October, our students will be working on target throws, by playing a game called Pin Busters. Students will work together and have to show their teamwork skills, as they try and knock down their opponent’s bowling pins. Students will be using the overhand throwing technique that was taught throughout the year. In November, students will be learning Soccer skills. Students will be working on passing and trapping the ball, while the upper grades will play “game like”activities. Students are reminded to wear sneakers on gym day. Healthy Tip!: Incorporate a green vegetable into your daily eating routine. Either for lunch or dinner, make one that the whole family can

enjoy together, or encourage your child to make a salad from the school’s delicious salad bar!

Library with Ms. King: Welcome Back READERS!!!!! Our library has 325 NEW BOOKS!!!! Please remember to handle our books with care and make sure to enjoy them The Scholastic Book Fair is coming! Once again, PS 204 will be hosting the book fair to coincide with Fall Parent Teacher Conferences. The fair will officially open on Monday, November 13th through Friday, November 17th. Please make time to come to the fair during Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday, November 16th. The book fair will be open on the 16th from 1:00 to 3:00 and 5:00-7:00. Please note, students MUST be accompanied by an adult while at the book fair on the 13th. Students may bring money to school and make purchases during their library period.Fourth grade students - Students have learned that Fiction texts are shelved alphabetically by the author’s last name. Students are able to use the Destiny website to search for Just Right Books and independently locate books in the library. Students are enjoying the opportunity to find a cozy spot and read!

Myon Reading with Ms. Simpson MyOn is an e-book library which provides over 5,000 books to children online. This year, our students are using the same account usernames and passwords that were issued to them last year. Fourth grade should already have an account number and should be using their individual accounts. New students will get their account numbers within the next few weeks when MyOn distributes them. Music with Ms. Brigida: Students in grades Pre-K thru 5 are exploring instruments, singing, dancing and composition. All students are using creative thinking, connecting and responding skills in the world of music. Invite your child to talk about music class and the activities we do each week. In grade 4, students are focusing on guitar playing.
