April 7, 2017

Enraged parents want answers EVANDER - The parents of a new-born baby who was born with a burn wound is blaming Evander Hospital for the injury the baby sustained.

According to the baby’s mother, Ms Amanda Pelser, she experienced contractions and was admitted to Evander Hospital on 31 January.

Ms Pelser was apparently connected to a cartography (CTG) apparatus to measure the strength, duration and intervals of her contractions in order to determine when delivery could be expected.

The parents believe the apparatus was not connected properly.

The device was connected to her by means of a bandage.

The family said this is not the correct procedure as there should be some kind of indulgent measure to prevent possible injury.

Ms Pelser apparently complained to the staff of the hospital that she was having severe pains and that the machine was burning her.

However she was allegedly ignored by the nurses on duty who continued with the procedure.

As soon as the procedure was over, Ms Pelser discovered burn wounds on her skin where the apparatus was connected.

Mr Pelser took a photo of the burn wounds as proof.

The situation was brought under the attention of the personnel in the maternity ward, but Ms Pelser got very little assistance from the personnel to attend to the burn wounds.

She was discharged as it was ascertained that she had not gone into labour at that time.

Ms Pelser went into labour and was again admitted to Evander Hospital on 12 February.

Her son was born later that day. Mr and Ms Pelser were shocked when

their son was born with serious burn wounds on the left side of his head.

They claimed this was due to the cartography apparatus that burned Ms Pelser.

The baby was transferred to the neonatal ward because of the burn wounds.

When Ms Pelser went to visit her baby and returned to her ward, her bed was apparently allocated to another patient.

She did not have a bed in hospital for three days before she was discharged on 15 February.

“It is totally unacceptable that the child was born with serious burn wounds and should begin his life with unnecessary trauma and serious injuries which he obtained before birth,” said Mr Charles Biggs, the family’s spokesman.

“The possibility of a negative affect on

his life in the future cannot be excluded. “Although there is no evidence currently

to prove what caused the injuries to the baby’s head, the balance of probabilities indicates the injury de nitely relate to the trauma and injuries that his mother obtained shortly before he was born.”

The family is also concerned that the child could suffer other serious illnesses such as brain damage, in the future.

“If it is taken into account that a baby has a soft skull before birth, it is possible that there might be injuries or damage that does not manifest at the time.

“The possibility of brain damage cannot be excluded.”

The family does not have a medical aid and therefore cannot afford to have the baby

assessed by a paediatrician. On 23 February, the incident was brought

under the attention of the executive manager of the hospital and a meeting was arranged for 3 March. The hospital undertook to provide full feedback regarding the matter within a week.

The parents have not yet received any word from the hospital.

“We are of the opinion that Evander Hospital and/or the Mpumalanga Department of Health and/or the National Department of Health must accept

responsibility for this situation that was caused by prima facia neglect.

“In our memorandum to the hospital we requested them to indicate how they will assist the family nancially with any future expenses, and/or procedures and/or interventions that may arise from this unfortunate event,’ said Mr Biggs.

He can be contacted at 073 916 1691 or fax at 086 559 3341.

The newspaper contacted Evander Hospital for comment, but they failed to comment at time of going to press.

Land invasion case referred back to police for further investigationeMBALENHLE - The local Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is not backing down on their plan to continue to invade land in the area.

Members arrived in great numbers to support Mr John Mahlangu at his court appearance at the Evander Magistrate’s Court on 29 March.

Mr Mahlangu was facing land invasion charges, however the case was returned to the police for further investigation because there was not enough evidence to constitute a criminal case.

The charge was laid by Govan Mbeki Municipality.

The EFF celebrated the court’s decision and regarded it as a victory.

Mr Mahlangu said it proved there was no case from the beginning and that the police were used by politicians to arrest him.

“This was politically motivated.“Politicians used the police to achieve

their political agenda.“I am going to take legal steps against the

police for unlawful arrest.”Mr Mahlangu vowed not to stop to

encourage locals to invade land and said Govan Mbeki Municipality will not make him back down and said he is representing residents in need.

He said people who are desperate for land are mostly the elderly who have been trying to get land and RDP houses without any luck.

“They cannot afford rent.“What should they do? Should they be

EFF members who supported Mr John Mahlangu at Evander Magistrates’s Court.

homeless?“Land is our priority and people must get

land.”Mr Mahlangu was suspended by the of ce

of the speaker of Govan Mbeki Municipality as a Ward 9 committee member.

Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, the speaker, said the municipal council, in particular the of ce of the speaker, was not pleased with Mr

Mahlangu’s conduct. He said it was alleged Mr Mahlangu was

behind the invasion of municipal land in Ext 22 in eMbalenhle and encouraged members of the community to occupy the vacant land illegally.

“Mr Mahlangu’s story was also published in the Ridge Times of 23 February.

“This happened after the ward committee workshop that was facilitated by the Mpumalanga Department of Cooperative

Governance and Traditional Affairs at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre in February.

“The workshop’s objective was to equip ward committees in their functions, roles and responsibilities.

“After the two-day workshop, all ward committee members signed the Code of Conduct for ward committees.

“The Code of Conduct makes provision for declarations by ward committee members that ward committee members pledge to advance and act in the best interest of the ward and be bound by the Code.

“Therefore Mr Mahlangu knew that his actions and conduct were contrary to the Code of Conduct for ward committees.

“Consequently, Mr Mahlangu was called to the of ce of the speaker to ascertain whether what was being reported about him and ultimately published in the newspaper, was true.

“He did not deny it.“Council has opened a case of trespassing

against Mr Mahlangu and suspended him from his duties as a ward committee member, pending the conclusion of the charge brought against him.

“We further cautioned him not to liaise with members of the community in the capacity of a ward committee member.”

Nicho will be climbing Everest dressed as a rhinoTRICHARDT - Since childhood, Nicho du Preez (19) has not been afraid of anything.

His family says that he always accepted any challenge.

This year yet another adventure awaits the young adrenaline hunter.

“It did not take much convincing to get me to sign up.

“I am always ready for any adventure anywhere anytime,” Nicho explained.

He will join Nomadic Adventures in support of the Lawrence Anthony, Earth Organisation, trekking a part of Mount Everest.

Because Nicho is doing the hike in support of the Lawrence Anthony, Earth Organisation, he will be hiking in a branded full-bodied rhino costume. This diverse group hopes to stand at the base of the world’s highest mountain, making a statement against rhino poaching.

“I would like to motivate others to also join in the adventure and the ght against rhino poaching.

Nicho studies Zoology at the University of Pretoria.

His love for animals and the environment is the drive

behind his support for rhinos.“I love working in the veld and I want to make a difference by applying what I have learned.

“Awareness for rhino conservation could be seen

everywhere and it almost started to go a

little bit better.

“It seemed as if less rhinos were being poached, but it is still a big problem and even getting worse,” Nicho said.

He heard about the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organisation at his university residence, Olienhout.

Every year one or two students from Olienhout residence join the ght against rhino poaching.

This year Nicho will be the only student leaving for Mount Everest.

All funds raised will be donated to Fundimvelo Thula Thula, Rhino Orphanage.

Nicho will hike up part of Mount Everest from 2 to 16 April.

“We will land in Lukla.“The ight into Lukla is a lifetime

experience in itself.“The air eld is one of the most

dangerous airports in the world,” Nicho said.

Lukla Air eld is on a slope and the difference between the two ends of the runway is about 60 metres.

After lunch they will begin the trek for a few hours along the Dudh Kosi River to the village of Phakding which is 2 610m above sea level.

The highest above sea level they will be, is at Khongma-La which is 5 535m above sea level.

They will trek from Lobuche to Chhukung via Khongma.

Temperatures drop to -15

degrees Celcius during April on the mountain.

“Even being at the base camp is dangerous which is 5 380m above sea level.

“Many avalanches have hit base camp before and people died.

“We cannot climb too far and too high in one day, because of the danger of altitude sickness.

“On levels that are high above sea level, it feels as if you are breathing through a straw.

“I also had to buy a lot of specialised gear for the extreme weather conditions,” Nicho explained.

“It is an experience of a life time and it is for a good cause,” Nicho said.

Even though he has a sponsor, C track Zambia, he had to sell his motorcycle to have enough money to join this Mount Everest adventure.

Nicho is taking a small wooden carved rhino with him that he will take a photo of on the highest point to where he will be trekking.

He will name the rhino after their mountain guide, Nirkumar Rai, who will be celebrating his birthday while they are on the mountain.

There will be 10 people in the group and all of them will be hiking to raise money for Rhino conservationists.

Nicho would like to thank everyone that made it possible for him to climb, especially his sponsor, C track Zambia.

Anyone who would like to join in the next Mount Everest venture against rhino poaching, can contact Nicho at 079 928 5375.

HIGHVELD - Mr Mduduzi Manana, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, hosted Gert Sibande TVET College’s Decade of the Artisan advocacy campaign in the Gert Sibande Region on 23 and 24 March.

Mr Manana and the college management met with employers in the hospitality sector at the college’s central of ce on the rst day of the programme.

He later met employers of the electrical engineering department of the Eskom Thuthuka Power Station, as well as employers of the engineering and automotive sectors at Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club.

The goal was to encourage the private sector to partner with the college and to motivate more young people, high school learners and unemployed youths to see artisanship as a career of choice.

The slogan of the Decade of the Artisan is “It’s cool to be a 21st century artisan”.

This will help the nation to produce a more skilled workforce in the future, as well as contribute

towards South Africa’s economic growth and development.

Mr Jannie Pretorius, deputy principal, provided an overview of the college’s programmes and the rationale behind college-employer partnerships.

He emphasised the need for employers to use their workplaces as training spaces for artisan learners and for lecturers to be exposed to the latest technologies so the training

provided by the college is relevant and responsive to the needs of the employers.

Discussions about how to enhance the training provided by the college, as well as improving the professional attitude and work-readiness of students proved to be fruitful.

Mr Manana said South Africa is

currently producing about 16 000 artisans a year, while the National Development Plan has a target of 30 000 artisans a year by 2030.

He said it is no longer fashionable to have a matric certi cate or a university degree that does not lead to employment.

“In countries such as Germany, artisans are the economic drivers of the country.

“Germany is regarded as the leader in engineering and has more college students than university students.

“The perception that colleges are for ‘school drop-outs’, is outdated and must change.

“We are calling on employers to partner with the college so that when the students complete their studies, they will get work.”

On the second day, more than 1 200 learners from local high schools attended the launch of the Decade of the Artisan at the Gert Sibande TVET College Skills Academy in Standerton.

The event was sponsored by the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority.

Deputy Minister encourages private sector to partner with college and motivate youth

Ms Flora Maboa-Boltman (executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality) and Mr Mduduzi Manana (Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training) at the launch of the Decade of the Artisan programme at Graceland Casino.

“Sy was byna ’n jaar oud toe ek en my man uitmekaar is.

Me.

Me.

Me. Rheeder moet vandag alles vir haar dogter doen.

“My man het al vir my gesê dat ek dit rustig moet neem, want as my rug nou moet ingee, is

Potholes are the bane of many motorists who take to roads across South Africa. The persistent rains in recent months across large parts of Gauteng and the northern provinces have again led to frustration among road users who have to deal with potholes, mostly on roads that are not managed by SANRAL. It is scant comfort to note that this aversion is not restricted to South Africa. In Brisbane, Australia, the Courier Mail recently complained bitterly about “calf-deep” potholes that opened up on the Bruce Highway, the busiest road along the country’s east coast. Canadians, too, love to recount tales of how they have to manoeuvre through “obstacle courses” on the freeways, especially at the end of the winter season. In warmer climes, such as South Africa, the beating sun results in surfacing layers drying out and becoming brittle, which results in cracks developing in the surface layer. If no maintenance is performed on these cracks, then with the next rains, water is able to reach underlying crushed rock and gravel layers that are used in the construction of most South African roads.

These crushed rock and gravel layers reduce the cost of road construction in South Africa by nearly 40% when compared to countries in Europe and the United States. The downside, however, is that as soon as these layers become moist, they lose most of their strength, and along with that their ability to carry the imposed tyre loads, which results in the formation of potholes.

This ingress of rainwater through the surface is the leading cause of most potholes on South African roads, and that is why most potholes appear after prolonged periods of rainfall, and also why potholes are more prevalent on roads in wetter provinces of South Africa such as Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

In addition to the obvious cost that motorists have to incur for damaged tyres and suspensions, potholes pose major dangers to road safety. Drivers who hit a pothole at speed, or swerve to try and avoid it, can easily lose control of their vehicles and cause accidents.

The best cure for potholes, is to prevent them from developing KPVJGTUVRNCEG

That is why preventative maintenance has been at the core of SANRAL’s approach to managing the 21 946 km of national roads under its jurisdiction. SANRAL’s preventative maintenance approach consists of daily activities to ensure rainwater drains away from the road as quickly as possible.

This includes the opening and clearing of blocked storm water pipes and culverts, the cutting back of vegetation, the collection of litter and debris and the repair and reshaping of gravel shoulders. The next focus of our daily activities is to identify any surface cracks that have developed and seal them as soon as possible.

Each of the 21 946 km of national roads is covered by a VJTGGVQXG[GCTTQWVKPGOCKPVGPCPEGEQPVTCEVVQRGTHQTOthe above mentioned daily activities

In addition, the preventative maintenance approach also includes periodic activities that are performed every 8 to 12 years. These consist of the application of a new surfacing layer on top of the old surface layer, ensuring that risk of rainwater penetration is minimised as far as possible, even though aging cracks not visible to the human eye.

Preventative maintenance is 18 times cheaper than following a reactive approach (wait for a pothole to develop, and then repair it). In addition, it has enabled us to prolong the life of most national roads well beyond their original 20-year design life – currently more than 75% of the SANRAL national road network is older than 20 years. This is further corroborated by the condition of the SANRAL national road network of which currently only 3.3% is rated as in poor condition, which is well within the international norm of 10%.

For the road user, the success of SANRAL’s preventative maintenance approach over the past 19 years should be obvious when they compare the number of potholes they encounter on a SANRAL national road, to the number of potholes on roads managed by other authorities.
