People go bananas over this Spur character

Tabadimangangamotsokoneri Sekano, also known as Piesang.

“I grew up in this restaurant. I have Spur grill basting in my veins.”

Piesang Sekano, has worked at Spur franchises in three cities in South Africa; Potchefstroom, Cape Town and now, Mbombela.

Piesang, whose birth name is Tabadimangangamotsokoneri and who works as a waiter, says his nickname has been the start of many a conversation with restaurant customers. At fi rst it used to bother him when people teased him and kept asking him if either he was a banana or if he really liked bananas.

“Now, I make fun of my own name and myself. Let’s be honest, if I used my full

name, that wouldn’t work either,” he said. His full name would certainly not fi t on

his name badge. What is more interesting is the background to the nickname which leads back to brother, Nicholas, who is four years younger, who started to call him “Piesang” as a joke when the boys were children.

“Growing up in Potchefstroom, we used more Afrikaans than English slang. That is the name Nicholas chose and as hard as I tried to get away from it, the more it stuck,” he said.

Ironically, Piesang is allergic to bananas, so much so that when he tried to eat one as a youngster, he was violently ill for two days.

“When I am in a taxi and someone has bananas in their grocery bags, I feel dizzy from the smell. I wished I loved bananas. Of course, Nicholas eats them all the time,” he added.

Piesang says he “took a wrong turn” to end up in this city in 2009, after paying a visit to his brother who works in the city and surrounding areas and lives in KaBokweni.

When Nicholas would not give him the money to return to Cape Town as promised, he simply decided to stay. Soon after this, he went to Arkansas Spur at Westend to look for a job.

“My brother said it was too much fun having me around. So, one day, I arrived at the restaurant door in my Spur uniform and apron and asked when I could start. The manager must have liked my attitude because I started that very day,” he said.

Joe Sithole, manager at Arkansas Spur, said customers are often intrigued by Piesang’s story.

“Piesang is well-known here and an important member of our team. Many people like to ask him about his name,” Sithole said.

‘Grey goods’ have been produced for distribution in one country (China, for example) and is sold in another country (South Africa). Image: Sourced

Stay infomed on your consumer rights Nelspruit Post’s guide to the

Consumer Protection Act has been informing readers about their consumer rights since February. This week we will discuss so-called “grey goods.”

Grey goods (also called parallel goods) are products that were made and would have been sold in one country, but were imported from their original destination for sale in another country.

A good example is products intended for China, but are sold in South Africa.

If a supplier sells grey goods, it must:• Display notice that parallel-market goods have been reconditioned, rebuilt or remade. If the products are being sold without the approval of the registered trademark holder of the product, the supplier must disclose this with a clear and visible notice.

Consumers have the right to demand confi rmation of the purchases they have made. Invoices or receipts serve as examples. These invoices or receipts must include:•The supplier’s full contact details and VAT registration number

• A description of the goods purchased• The date of the transaction(s)• The unit price of the goods purchased as as well as the amount of units bought• The total price of the transaction(s) including applicable taxes.

Your right to disclosure by intermediaries.Any purported intermediary, broker, sales,

representative or estate agent must disclose his affi liation with the entity he represents. The same applies to positions such as that of deliverers and installers, who must always wear name badges or similar identifi cation, which will allow them to identify themselves.

Little ones get a lesson on safety from their heroes

Front: Brutus the dog with Milia Veloza, Anika Strydom, Christopher Oosthuizen, Annele Stighling, Simon Rossouw, Joshua Oosthuizen, (middle) Daniëll Bach, Evan Bach, Ryk van der Leek, Ms Hanri Krüger, Kian Somers, Daniël Benson, Kalyssa de Man, Dian Heunes, (back) Albert Gryvenstein and Danie Theron.

Tsogo Sun Hotel has teamed up with one of the city’s famous crime fighters to help keep children safer.

The hotel recently assisted Bossies Community Justice (BCJ) by donating 2 000 whistles which they started distributing to preschoolers on Friday.

Albert Gryvenstein and Danie Theron from BCJ visited Kriekie-Bos Kleuterskool in Steiltes where each received a whistle, to use should they ever get lost or need help. They were also instructed on what else to do if they ever got lost. The kids were then treated to a demonstration of Brutus the dog following the scent of a shoe to locate children - hiding for the purposes of the demonstration.

Brutus was thanked with a special box of treats.

Michelle Higgo, PPP of Tsogo Sun Hotel said they supported this great initiative to educate and empower little ones.

Anika Strydom thanks Brutus.

A Snappy runner.

Shopping while you fill up has never been this snappy

Have you ever found yourself in a situation when you refuel your vehicle that for some or other reason you can’t go into the fuel station’s convenience store?

That problem has been solved thanks to Snappy, a service that does it for you. Coordinator of the project, Helena du Plessis says that there was a need for something like this in Mbombela, because life tends to get a little hurried.

Snappy is a concept initiated by the owner of Dos Santos Filling Station in Nelspruit and this is how it works:

• Snappy Drive-Thru is a mobile tool designed specifically for the service

station industry.• Operated on a table, Snappy Drive-Thru allows you to take your shop to the customer on the forecourt.• While refuelling, a customer can order any item from the shop on the tablet provided.• Once the order is placed, paid and prepared, a snappy runner will then collect the selected items and return them to the vehicle.

“The benefits include unrivalled customer service,” Du Plessis said. “Convenience is the key and will bring customers and their friends back for more.

“The tool cuts down on queues and congestion at pumps, making a smoother and more efficient process.”

The annual Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism (KLCBT) Golf Day held on Friday at Nelspruit Golf Club, was won by Ben Viljoen. His prize was a voucher for fi ve nights at Swandini, a Forever Resort.

It was a wonderful sunny day to take to the tees. The players enjoyed it immensely and as always there were many winners and lucky-draw prizes.

The fi eld was fully booked by sponsors this year and players could participate in a variety of games on each tee before moving on.

Chairman of KLCBT, TJ Maré thanked the golf club’s Ryk Lacock for everything he has done for them for the past few years.

There were two jokers on the course to ensure that the players were well-looked-after and that they stayed hydrated.

White River Rugby Club (WRRC) II annihilated Nelspruit Rugby Club II in an Ehlanzeni Mayor’s Rugby League match at WRRC on Saturday.

The home team ran in eight tries to one for a 43-5 victory.

Nelspruit fi elded a much weakened second XV due to seven players being promoted to the injury-ravaged fi rst XV. The effect of this was evident throughout the match.

Nelspruit’s defence was poor at at times bordered on the ludicrous.

This made the job much easier for a well-drilled and motivated White River team.

White River dominated the match from the kick-off and simply won quality possession from the set pieces, secured lots of turnover ball, and ran at their opponents. Gaps opened up like the Red Sea in the Nelspruit defence and White River rushed to

the promised tries. The half-time score was

24-0. The carnage continued in the second half.

White River centre Pierre Janse van Rensburg side-stepped his way through half the Nelspruit team.

He could have kissed any of the Nelspruit players on the cheek when he ran past, so lethargic was the defence.

Nelspruit wing, Louis Khoza, did score a try against the run of play but the visiting team could not get into the match.

They were outplayed, outmuscled and outsmarted.

White River’s forwards did the basics very well and the rest of the game plan fell into place.

The red team’s try scorers were wing Ferdill Vilander, centres Eldred James and Pierre Janse van Rensburg (2), scrum half Henk van Tonder, eighth man Duard Combrink, lock Arno van der Merwe and hooker Hein Steenkamp.

White River completely outmuscle their opponents
