1) James P Allison

He is a well-known American scientist and

immunologist born in 1948. He completed his PhD

in 1973 from the University of Texas. He has been

awarded the Nobel Prize for his study and work on

a known protein that functions as a brake on the

immune system. He realized the potential of

releasing the brake and thereby unleashing our

immune cells to attack tumours. He then developed

this concept into a brand-new approach for treating

cancer patients.

2) Tasuku Honjo

He is a Japanese Scientist born in 1942. He had

completed his MD in Medicine in 1966 and PhD in

Medical Chemistry in 1975 from Kyoto University.

He was awarded the 2018 Nobel prize for his

discovery of a protein on immune cells which also

operates as a brake on the immune system, but

with a different mechanism of action. Therapies

based on his discovery proved to be strikingly

effective in the fight against cancer.

1) Arthur Ashkin

He is an American Physicist and he is 96 years old. He is the

Oldest Nobel Laureate in History. He was awarded the Noble

for the invention of Optical Tweezers. This device is able to

grab particles, atoms, viruses and other living cells and move

them with their laser beam fingers.

2) Donna Strickland and Gérard Mourou

Donna Strickland is Canadian Physicist born in 1959. She

completed her PhD in 1989 under the mentorship of Gérard

Mourou. She along with Gérard Mourou have been given the

2018 Physics Nobel for their creation of ultrashort high-

intensity laser pulses without destroying the amplifying

material. This technique is called Chirped Pulse Amplification

(CPA) which has become the standard for high-intensity

lasers.

3) Gérard Mourou

He is a French Scientist working in the field of Optical

Sciences. He was the founding Director of the Centre for

Ultrafast Optical Science (UOS) at the University of Michigan.

He is the pioneer in the study of ultrafast lasers and their

applications in scientific, engineering and medical disciplines.

1) Frances H. Arnold

She is a professor of chemical engineering at the

California Institute of Technology born in 1956 in

Pittsburgh, USA. The 2018 Chemistry Noble was awarded

to her for her work on the directed evolution of

enzymes, which are proteins that catalyse chemical

reactions. These enzymes are used to manufacture

environment friendly chemical substances like

pharmaceuticals, renewable fuels, etc.

2) George P. Smith

He is an American Scientist born in 1941. He is currently

an emeritus professor of biological sciences at the

University of Missouri. The 2018 Chemistry Nobel was

awarded to him for developing an elegant method

known as phage display, where a bacteriophage – a virus

that infects bacteria – can be used to evolve new

proteins.

3) Sir Gregory P. Winter

He is a world-renowned Biochemist from England

currently working at the M.R.C. Laboratory of Molecular

Biology in England. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for

his work on directed evolution of antibodies using the

phage display method of George P Smith for producing

new pharmaceuticals.

1) Nazia Murad

She is a Yazidi woman born in Iraq. She was

captured and made a sex slave by the ISIS. She now

lives in Germany. She was awarded the Nobel

Peace Prize for sharing her account of sexual

violence faced by her many other captured women

and bringing it in front of the world. Because of her

the criminals could be held accountable and

brought to justice.

2) Denis Mukwege

Born is 1955 he is a Congolese gynaecologist. He

founded and works in Panzi Hospital in Bukavu,

where he specializes in the treatment of women

who have been raped by armed rebels. The Nobel

Prize is to recognize his work in helping the victims

of the sexual war crimes and helping them face

the trauma and get back on their feet. He has

dedicated his life for this work.

1) William D. Nordhaus

He is an American Economist born in 1941. He is

currently the Sterling Professor of Economics at the

Yale University, New Haven, USA. He was awarded

the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics “for integrating

climate change into long-run macroeconomic

analysis”. He created an integrated assessment

model, i.e. a quantitative model that describes the

global interconnections between the economy and

the climate.

2) Paul M. Romer

He is an American Economist born in 1955. He

currently a professor at NYU Stern School of

Business, New York, USA. He has been awarded the

Nobel Prize “for integrating technological innovations

into long-run macroeconomic analysis”. Romer

demonstrates how knowledge can function as a

driver of long-term economic growth. He showed

how economic forces govern the willingness of firms

to produce new ideas and innovations. His work laid

the foundation of the Endogenous growth theory.
