What is Matsuri?Matsuri translates as festival.

The matsuri of Japan originated

from ancient Shinto rituals that

date back to the mid-3rd century.

Matsuri are still held by some

shrines and the Imperial Court

to celebrate the cultivation

of rice and to pray for the

well-being of communities.

Modern matsuri tends

to be more focused on

the enjoyment of being

together and provides

an opportunity for

community members

to experience

the culture of Japan.

Welcome to

Experiencing the classic arts of Japan and the excitement of Japan todaywith a flavor of Santa Fe

According to an ancient Chinese legend, a determined group of koi fish (carp) tried to reach the top of a waterfall while being taunted by localdemons that they could not reach the top. Adding to the challenge, the demons increased the height of the water fall. The koi tried again andagain, falling back into the water, but they refused to give up. After a hundred years one koi made a heroic leap and reached the top of the fall. The gods showed their approval and transformed the exhausted koi into a shining golden dragon. He joyfully spends his days chasing pearls ofwisdom across the skies of the vast, eternal heavens. Because of their endurance and perseverance, koi have symbolized overcoming adversityand fulfilling one’s destiny.

Thanks to Iba,students have enjoyed art projects and learned about Japan

Iba Fukuda has coordinated the Santa Fe JIN SchoolProject since 2008, bringing Japanese culture andart projects to schools. Students learn about Japanesetraditions with pictures, artifacts, musical instrumentsor dance which Santa Fe JIN volunteers bring toclassrooms. Following a brief cultural presentation, students participate in a creative art project. This year we are making an origami koinbori (carpbanners), to celebrate Children's Day, May 5th.Origami is a classroom favorite with wonderful reactionsfrom the kids. Two projects that were particularlymemorable were folding origami kabuto (samuraihelmets) and folding pink sakura (cherry blossoms)which became stage decorations for our 2015 matsuri.

The Japanese tradition of foldingpaper cranes is centuries old, andthe crane, believed to live for 1000years, symbolized longevity andgood fortune. According to tradi-tion, if you fold 1000 cranes, yourwish will come true. Many are famil-iar with the story of Sadako Sasakiwho was exposed to radiation whenthe atomic bomb was dropped onHiroshima during WWII and herquest to fold 1000 cranes. But didyou know that the Japanese astro-naut selection process requiredcandidates to make 1000 origamicranes? Or that Japanese astro-nauts made origami cranes to honorthe thousands of victims of theearthquake and tsunami that devas-tated northern Japan and took thecranes on the spaceship as a symbolof hope and encouragement to thesurvivors?
