It feels good to give back.

And together with our generous customers

and employees, Macy’s averages more than

$1 million a week to initiatives important to

you and your community – arts, education,

HIV/AIDS, and women’s health and wellness.

It adds up to nearly $71 million a year.

It’s a good feeling we can all share, and

to us, that’s the magic of giving.

GREGORY J. MARKS When Gregory Marks was awarded a full University Graduate Scholarship to study opera characterization at CCM, his life’s path was transformed. He still remembers the wisdom imparted to him by the great basso buffo Italo Tajo and voice teacher Patricia Berlin: be true to yourself, find your story in the character, pay attention to details, believe in your performance and own it. These core truths have guided Gregory throughout his rewarding career as a tenor with the San Francisco Opera, a teacher, an arts activist and an administrator.

In his own life story, Gregory has remained true to himself by recognizing the many opportunities from which he has benefitted. In appreciation for his training, Gregory gives annually to the Thomas W. Busse Trust to benefit the Voice Department. Gregory has also named CCM as a primary beneficiary of his estate in order to establish a scholarship to support voice students with a preference for musical theatre and opera. Gregory’s gifts assure that his legacy — his passion for the transformative power of music — will flourish with a new generation of CCM graduates.

I have come to realize the transformative nature of music. The performance itself is an agent of change that powerfully impacts people’s lives.

ACT ONE:We begin in the middle of a film shoot, which is slowly falling apart because of a difficult cast. Two of the lead actors, Pandolfe and Madame de la Haltière, are a squabbling couple, and Madame’s two daughters from a previous marriage, Dorothèe and Noèmie, are delaying the film’s progress with their diva-like antics. Lucette, a script girl and Pandolfe’s daughter from a previous marriage, dreams of one day becoming an actress herself. After a long day of filming, she falls asleep on the set and dreams of starring in the movie. Her fairy godmother appears in the guise of the Costume Designer, and, with her assistants, transports Lucette to the Prince’s ball.

ACT TWO: The director is attempting to film an elaborate ball scene with the Prince, but the actor refuses to cooperate with him or anyone else on the set. The Prince is lost in melancholy. Suddenly, Lucette arrives and completely enthralls him. He is now lost in her presence.

ACT THREE: Lucette awakes to find herself back on the set, but nothing can ever be the same again after her dream. Madame de la Haltière, Pandolfe and Lucette’s stepsisters return, fighting about the mysterious woman who appeared during the ball scene. Enraged, Pandolfe throws his wife and stepdaughters off of the set and tries to comfort Lucette. Left alone, Lucette drifts off and returns to her dream, but this time the Prince is waiting for her. They both realize that they are in love and that they need to find each other.

ACT FOUR: Pandolfe worries about Lucette as she awakes from her dream of the Prince. The filming of the royal procession is about to begin. The actor playing the Prince recognizes Lucette among the cast and crew, and they are finally united in real life.

SYNOPSIS OF SCENESSYNOPSIS

CCM 4

This production of Cendrillon pays homage to French filmmaker François Truffaut’s acclaimed outsider film, Day for Night. It is a behind-the-scenes look at the reality behind the artifice of motion pictures. Lucette in Cendrillon is a nobody script girl on the set of a movie studio. A Truffaut-like director tries to shoot a film that is constantly thwarted by the misbehavior of temperamental movie starlets and a melancholic leading man playing the Prince. The atmosphere is rife with ambition, frustration, competition and intrigue when the magic of cinema happens and the two lovers meet. – Robin Guarino

THE VILLAGE NEWSALUMNI APPLAUSE

Since making her Metropolitan Opera debut in December 2014 as the title role in Aida, soprano Tamara Wilson (BM Voice, 2004) has made headlines for her outstanding presence on the stage. In the 2015-16 season, she made appearances with the English National Opera, Oper Frankfurt, the Baltimore Symphony and the Cincinnati Symphony, among others. Wilson was also named the winner of the 2016 Richard Tucker Award, which comes with an impressive $50,000 cash prize.

Recent graduate and mezzo-soprano Paulina Villarreal (MM Voice, 2015) returned to Cincinnati this fall to continue her DMA studies after giving a solo recital in her native country of Mexico at the Escuela Municipal de Música. An emerging artist, Villareal has performed both as a soloist and on opera stages across the U.S. and Mexico. In 2015 she was named a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, where she performed in the world premiere of Yehudi Weyner’s In the Arms of Sleep.

Stuart Skelton (MM Voice, 1995) recently opened the Metropolitan Opera’s 2016-17 season as Tristan in Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. The tenor was featured in the New York Times for taking on the difficult role, which he sang for the first time in Germany and London previously this year. The New York Times praised Skelton’s Met performance and wrote that he sang with “integrity and feeling.”

Conducting alumna and former faculty member Xian Zhang (CCM, 1998-2009) recently made her debut as the music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. She also serves as the principal guest conductor of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales this season — the first female conductor to hold a titled role with the orchestra.
