SynopsisSetting: Seville, Spain in the 1800s

Act I—Passing himself off as a poor student called Lindoro, Count Almaviva has been trying to woo Rosina, the ward of the controlling Dr. Bartolo. Figaro, the Count’s former valet, now barber and factotum of Seville, agrees to help the Count. Inside Bartolo’s house, Rosina writes a letter to Lindoro. Don Basilio, the music master, brings news that Count Almaviva is in town looking for Rosina. Basilio suggests a campaign of slander against the Count, and Bartolo has a marriage contract between himself and Rosina drawn up immediately. Disguising himself as a drunken soldier, Almaviva barges into Bartolo’s house demanding lodging. During the confusion, the Count whispers to Rosina that he is really Lindoro. Bartolo tries to get him to leave, but he refuses and slips a love letter to Rosina. The scene gets out of control and soldiers finally arrive. The count leaves and the scene ends in confusion.

InTerMISSIon

Act II—The Count returns to the house, this time disguised as the music teacher Don Alonso, who has been called in to replace the ailing Don Basilio. He soon gains the trust of Dr. Bartolo and, with his blessing, gives Rosina her lesson. While shaving Bartolo, Figaro steals a key that will enable the Count and Rosina to elope. Basilio makes an unexpected return, but Almaviva bribes him into playing along with the plot. Even so, Bartolo is suspicious and tries to rush the marriage by sending Basilio to find a notary. Bartolo manages to persuade Rosina that Lindoro has been working for Almaviva and does not really love her. Lindoro returns and reveals his true identity to Rosina. Bartolo returns to find Rosina and Almaviva married.

Director’s Note

I first directed Il Barbiere di Siviglia nine years ago in a small regional company with rented sets and costumes. It was a good introduction to the piece, but it left me with more questions than answers about this ever-popular opera. When I began

work on this CCM production, I wanted to find a new perspective. The story is an old one with roots that go back to the stock characters and plots of Greek and Roman comedy and Commedia dell’Arte. The old doctor (Bartolo) wants to marry his young ward (Rosina) to keep her away from an admirer (Count Almaviva). A crafty servant (Figaro) helps the young lovers to unite in the end. Essentially, it’s the tale of how an infatuated aristocrat, an enterprising businessman and a willful girl join forces to outmaneuver a controlling guardian. Three against one.

So, what kind of an adversary is Bartolo? It takes three intelligent young people two and a half hours to succeed. As I looked closer at the character of Bartolo, I noticed more and more signs of paranoia and control in the situations and lyrics. He is suspicious of everyone; he locks Rosina in the house; he is obsessive in his behavior. Obsessive! Compulsive! And so, with scenic designer Tom Umfrid and the rest of the design team, we started to explore what Bartolo’s environment would look like if he had a compulsive need to control it. Bartolo is a doctor, a man of science. This led us to the idea that his home was filled with many collections, both animal and mineral, all carefully arranged in their own cabinets.

If Bartolo embodies control, then Figaro embodies chaos. Figaro is the great improviser. He adapts himself to each new customer, situation and challenge. He enlists the resources at hand to make money, amuse himself, help a friend, or best of all, do all three at the same time. In order to provide a visual counterpart to Bartolo’s environment, we decided to set the piece on the opening day of Carnival. Figaro’s entrance ushers in the sun, Carnival, and new hope for the Count. Figaro uses the chaos of Carnival to help topple Bartolo’s house of control.

I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to take a fresh look at a familiar piece. I hope that you enjoy it, too.

- Karen Coe Miller
