DESCRIPTION

CCM's 2015-16 Mainstage Series opens with David Edgar's PENTECOST. A play of politics and ideas, PENTECOST details the discovery of a painting stunningly similar to Giotto di Bondone's THE LAMENTATION in an abandoned church in Eastern Europe. If proven to pre-date the master's work, the fresco will revolutionize Western Art. A dramatic power struggle ensures, as representatives from the worlds of art history, religion and politics stake their claims for the ultimate prize. Richard E. Hess directs this stunning drama, which the Daily Telegraph hailed as "funny, frightening and deeply moving." Learn more at http://ccm.uc.edu.

It feels good to give back. And together with our generous customers and

employees, Macy’s averages more than $1 million a week to initiatives important to you and your community – arts, education, the environment, HIV/AIDS, and women’s health and wellness.

It adds up to $69 million a year. It’s a good feeling we can all share, and to us, that’s the magic of giving.

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand a mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles.

From her beacon-hand glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command the air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

-Emma Lazarus

I never would have guessed that the daily headlines during every day of the rehearsal process for our production of David Edgar’s Pentecost would be filled with stories of the greatest wave of asylum seekers that the world has witnessed since World War II. To be confronted each day with harrowing images of individuals so desperate for a new life was a sobering reminder that not only does life imitate art, but our art must also imitate life. With open hearts we have struggled to create a theatrical world while confronting life and death challenges often beyond our imaginative means. Pentecost is demanding, and like life, asks us not to flinch when humanity becomes too much to bear.

I hope that Pentecost allows you to laugh a little and cry a little. I like theatre that allows me to escape, but I love theatre that challenges me to transcend escapism and asks me to enter deeper into my own humanity rather than avoiding the difficult. That too can be cleansing. Our ideas of difficult can begin to feel small in comparison.

This play, set in 1993 in an unnamed Eastern European country after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Empire, will take you on an unexpected journey after the discovery of a fresco painted on the wall of a church built in the 12th century. The discovery has the potential to change world-views about art, culture and national identity. To do so, the playwright asks you to listen through the barrier of language. You will hear characters speak Russian, German, Bulgarian, Polish, Arabic, Tamil, Turkish and English. Enjoy ascending our Tower of Babel.

Welcome to Pentecost. We are very glad you are here.

JOHN HARRISON John Harrison is the founder of The CCM Harmony Fund: Challenging Hate and Prejudice through Performing Arts. The arts are truly a language that all people speak; they cut across racial, cultural, social, educational and economic barriers. The CCM Harmony Fund was established to celebrate the language of the arts, encourage conversation and advocate compassion. The fund supports our incredibly talented students and faculty at the College-Conservatory of Music in the media and performing arts in creative and unique ways to promote culturally diverse audiences, and fight hate and prejudice. Mr. Harrison has made provisions in his will to support and continue the mission of The Harmony Fund.

The Harmony Fund was created as both an acknowledgement of the continuing existence of hate and prejudice within this civilized world and, more importantly, the ability of the arts to help us better understand and transcend these emotions.

FRIENDS OF CCMDear Friends and Alumni,

As you know, UC’s College-Conservatory of Music has an international reputation for excellence and competes with our country’s finest conservatories for extraordinary students. Yes, the performances are outstanding. Yes, it is the largest single sourse of performances in the state of Ohio. And yes, CCM is an Ohio Center

of Excellence. But are you aware that CCM alumni and students are the arts engine for our own community?

Not only are CCM alumni and students working behind the scenes and appearing on stages around the world but you also witness their work and performances at our very own Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, Know Theatre of Cincinnati, Cincinnati’s School for Creative and Performing Arts and the list goes on and on.

The Friends of CCM raise funds for scholarships to help attract the best and brightest students to CCM. I am proud of our college, students, alumni and the impact CCM has on our arts community. And today, I encourage you to also become a Friend of CCM!

Becoming a member is easy: complete the form on the next page and mail it back to us. You can also visit ccm.uc.edu and click on the FRIENDS link to join. Not only will you be investing in CCM, but you’ll be fueling the arts engine for some of our city’s most beloved organizations.

Best regards,

Donna de Graaf, President Friends of CCM

“Cearley shows exquisite instincts and timing as he lands joke after joke in tolins’ fable.” —sacramento Bee

REGIONAL PREMIERE COMEDY. What’s a renowned diva to do with decades of memories? And where to put the acres of memorabilia bursting the seams of her lavish Malibu estate? If you’re Barbra Streisand, you enshrine them in a mini-mall in your basement where you can pretend to go shopping! Out-of-work actor Alex More can’t pass up an offer to play shopkeeper for one tough customer who doesn’t let anyone rain on her parade. Soon it begins to take a toll on his patience, his love life, and his view of people (who need people).
