direCtOrDIRECTOR’S NOTESo what are we up to here?

We’re playing with a dream. Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn’t.

I’ve been thinking a lot about dreams lately. There’s Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream and, too, there’s The Third Reich of Dreams, an astounding book of nightmares gathered from everyday germans during Hitler’s early rise to power. This morning – it’s about a month before you’ll get to read this – as I came downstairs looking for enough coffee to chase my dreams far enough away to meet this deadline, I heard words in my head. They said, “No one dreams alone.”

That’s especially true of the dreams we make in theatre. One of us, not me, decided the dream would somehow spiral in and out of control in the way that art does when the paint begins to run. Another found a way you might almost-just-maybe identify the Fairy who looks for all the world like that normal person in the seat beside you on the bus. (If you don’t take pubic transit, I say, you might never meet a Fairy.) Others have been figuring out what sound Reality makes when it falls asleep and how The Light can shift when you’re looking from behind closed eyes. One of us, again not me, has been placing this version of the dream in Time. And all of us, me included, have been working hard to glue it solidly to text.

So what did I bring?

Mostly one hunch and two beliefs.

The hunch: Midsummer is that moment of unparalleled beauty in which it dawns on you that Winter’s on the way. Like the Buddha said, it’s all perfection and it’s all impermanent. So maybe you’ll wanna real quick eat that piece of fruit before it rots. And maybe you’ll feel wistful as you eat it. That’s the hunch.

The first belief is that, just like in waking life, approximately no one in this play is stupid, provided we keep in mind Phillip Slater’s observation that some of the stupidest individuals he ever encountered were among the “gentleman C” legacy students at Harvard.

The second belief is that dreams can make us looney and that, perhaps, there’s a kind of madness that can set us free and heal us, too. That would be the madness that leads us through the woods and back – not to Normality, which is, after all, just a collective kind of madness – but to a new and heretofore unnoticed sanity.

So what do we know now, a month before you read this?

The time is 1963. In a month or two or three, JFK will die. But we don’t know that yet. At least we think we don’t. I mean, after all, The Beatles have just released “She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah)” and we’re all busy sleeping in the hope it’s not a dream. That’s part of what we know.

And we’re pretty sure Martin Luther King, Jr. was right when he said human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted. That’s another part. And, of course, we’re more convinced than ever that no one dreams alone.

Thanks for coming, and may it prove a good night out.

- Michael Burnham, director

Toronto-based artist Amy Shackleton paints representational works with a drip technique normally reserved for abstraction. She applies the paint with squeeze bottles and rotates her canvas to guide each drip as it falls down the stretched surface. Thorough planning, measuring and layering is involved, but she’s at the mercy of gravity.

The natural force of gravity allows for a refreshing unpredictability that helps illustrate the organic elements in her work. To combat the natural, she uses a rotating easel and a level, creating straight lines, controlled curves and, eventually, concrete buildings.

This is Shackleton’s first theatrical collaboration, and she is ecstatic to be doing it at the UC College-Conservatory of Music. Shackleton has exhibited paintings in New York City, London, Massachusetts, Toronto, Montreal and Calgary. Recently, a timelapse video revealing her unique process went viral, reaching over 998,000 people (and counting).

Shackleton was recently interviewed on the national television show, “CTV Canada AM.” Her work has appeared in the Huffington Post, New York Magazine, CBC, CBS, gizmodo, My Modern Met and Oddity Central. A review of her April 2012 solo exhibition can be found in the Spring Issue of Magenta Magazine.

Shackleton was invited to speak on a panel about “Making Art in the Age of New Media” at the 15th Canadian Arts Summit in Banff. She is currently working on a 50 foot long painting, partially funded by the Ontario Arts Council. Shackleton’s paintings adorn dozens of private and corporate collections across North America, including the Colart Collection in Montreal. She received her BFA Honours Degree from York University in 2008.

Shackleton is represented by the Elaine Fleck gallery in Toronto and the gerry Thomas gallery in Calgary. To view more of her work visit www.amyshackleton.com.

FrieNdsFRIENDS OF CCM

Dear Friends,

CCM’s students, faculty and staff work very hard to create art that mesmerizes and delights. The Friends of CCM exist as a way of thanking them for their dedication.

I invite you to join us and be an integral part of CCM. For over 25 years, the Friends of CCM have served as advocates, fans and volunteers. CCM’s reputation is international, but its excellence demands our help. This school is only as strong as the financial support we can offer students. Every year, we see other schools increase their financial aid and we lose our edge if we don’t keep up.

So, please join the Friends of CCM today. Complete our membership form in this program and mail it back to us or call 513-556-2100. You can also join online at ccm.uc.edu by clicking on the Friends button at the bottom of the page.

As a Friends member, not only are you supporting student scholarships, but you also gain access to fun member benefits (such as behind-the-scenes tours) and ticket discounts on select performances and special events.

Be a part of CCM - join the Friends today.

With warmest wishes,

John Boggess, President Friends of CCM
