Audiences and artists have been coming together at Wigmore Hall for
nearly 115 years. In its intimate and welcoming environment, enthralling
performances of supreme musical works are experienced with a unique
immediacy. As we look forward to the 2015/16 Season, the Hall is
delighted to present some of the greatest artists in the world today, as well
as talented emerging artists who explore repertoire with skill, curiosity and
deeply personal interpretations – and we have you to thank for this.
All of us – the Hall’s audiences and supporters as much as its staff –
are guardians of a long and illustrious tradition; but we must ensure the
continued vitality of the Hall by exploring new vistas and possibilities, and
by never ceasing to learn, whether through listening, participating or
creating. Our starting point always remains the same: an uncompromising
belief in quality. Informing everything we do, it is embodied in the artists
who perform here and shared by all the people who contribute so much
to each Wigmore Hall event.
That belief in quality and the preservation of intimate music-making is also
the starting point for Wigmore Hall’s 2015/16 Season Appeal. Through
your generous support of the Hall, you have already played a crucial role
in creating experiences that are both exhilarating and uplifting. Your
annual gifts make all the difference and I hope that you will once again
join us and support the 2015/16 Season.
THANK YOUTHE WIGMORE HALL TRUST WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE
AND THANK THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANISATIONS FOR THEIR GENEROUS SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THE 2014/15 SEASON:

2 SEASON PREVIEW 2015/16
THE 2014/15 SEASON The number of concerts presented by Wigmore Hall has grown by 12% over the past 2 years, delivering a better quality and breadth of programme to our audiences than ever before.
The energy, imagination and impact of the 2014/15 Season is exemplified by two landmark projects that will extend into 2015/16 – The Mozart Odyssey and Henry Purcell: A Retrospective. Superb performances have captivated listeners in the Hall itself, and are inspiring a myriad of learning projects, engaging people of all ages. Neither of these ambitious enterprises would have been possible without the investment made by you, the Hall’s supporters, notably in the form of the Endowment Fund and sponsored concerts, and also with the gifts which support the season as a whole.
Perhaps one of the things we value most when we see a performance on the Wigmore Hall stage is the sense of connection and immediacy of communication. These values also lie at the heart of our Learning programme and can be seen reflected throughout our work, from the non-verbal link between parents and their new babies at our For Crying Out Loud! concerts, to baritone Marcus Farnsworth singing alongside primary school pupils on the Wigmore Hall stage, or the bond and empathy experienced by musicians, residents and care staff taking part in a Music for Life session in a care home.
In these difficult times for music education and the arts in general, the breadth and scale of Wigmore Hall Learning’s programme is striking, with 460 events and over 20,000 visits to our projects and events each season. Partnerships are key to sustaining our Learning activities – working with organisations including schools, colleges and conservatoires, funders and other arts organisations, and the community and health sectors, and building strong connections with artists, young people, music leaders, teachers, care staff, community leaders, audience members and indeed any other individual who believes in the power of music to change and enrich our lives.
SCHUBERT PROJECT: OPENING THE WORLD OF SONG TO NEW AUDIENCES
Over the next two years we present each of Schubert’s 600-plus Lieder performed by truly outstanding artists, exploring an infinite universe of musical and poetic expression. This series has been three years in the making and we are delighted to collaborate on this major project with the Schubertiade festival in Austria, a new international partner for us, which is committed to preserving the song recital as a concert-going experience.
Alongside performances of the highest quality, this series also features a diverse programme of Learning events, delivered to the same exceptional standards, providing new insights for existing audiences and inspiring people who are new to the wonderful world of song.
We present pre-concert talks and artist interviews with some of the world’s leading
THE 2015/16 SEASON Balancing tradition and innovation, the 2015/16 Season will set the pace for the next five years, building on the last decade of progress and achievement.
Among the programming highlights are multi-dimensional journeys through the entire song output of Schubert over two seasons, and the chamber music of Bartók (two composers closely identified with Wigmore Hall), and a still broader array of early and contemporary music. 500 years of repertoire will be represented in the three anniversary galas planned for May and June 2016, devoted to Schubert, Early and Baroque music and Contemporary works for string quartet. Please turn to page 8 for the Season Highlights and all the listings for 2015/16.
authorities on Schubert, and a Wigmore Study Group will focus on this rich topic in autumn 2015. We also have the inspirational Dominic Harlan presenting Schubert Lieder to people of all ages who are new to this musical world, including an event entitled Lieder for the Terrified at the very start of the 2015/16 Season, and a project for schools designed to inspire creative activity around song and storytelling. All of this work is fully integrated with our website, and talks and
podcasts, digital streaming and resources are available to support the programme. The schools project will also feature online films telling the stories behind the songs and with performances by leading artists. Inspired by these films, pupils will take part in specially designed activities to create their own responses to Schubert’s work, writing their own ‘Story Songs’ which will be shared through live performances and also online via the website.
A REVIEWWIGMORE HALL IS FAMED FOR ITS INTIMACY, BUT ITS AUDIENCES AND THE SCOPE OF THE ARTISTIC PROGRAMME JUST KEEP GROWING.
OVER THE COURSE OF THE 2014/15 SEASON, THE HALL PRESENTS SOME 920 EVENTS – 460 CONCERTS AND 460 LEARNING EVENTS.
CONNECTING PEOPLEWITH MUSIC
OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES, THE WIGMORE HALL LEARNING PROGRAMME HAS EVOLVED AND EXPANDED TO REACH A BROAD AND DIVERSE AUDIENCE
THROUGH CREATIVE PROJECTS, CONCERTS AND EVENTS.

The season also sees Wigmore Hall make the first moves to becoming a digital broadcaster in its own right. Increasingly, audiences will be in a position to sample a wealth of activity through digital media, even if they cannot visit the Hall itself. They will share in vivid performances, discover repertoire – including newly-commissioned scores – and deepen their intellectual and emotional engagement with both music and artists.
Internet streaming is planned for four concerts, and we will also make video recordings of the Final of our Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition, as well as a number of concerts and learning events, which audiences will be able to view on our new, content-rich website. Launched in early 2015, it is at the heart of our digital media strategy and supported by the new technical facilities that will be installed at the Hall in summer 2015.

While never compromising the Hall’s reputation for quality, we will continue to take an enterprising and creative approach as we seek both to satisfy long-standing devotees and to draw in new audiences.
As the past ten years have shown, this approach seems to be working, and we are determined to maintain our momentum in the years to 2020.
While ticket sales are strong, they only cover 60% of the overall cost of our operations. Running the Hall, with escalating operational costs and increased usage of our facilities, is becoming more and more difficult.

Public funding from Arts Council England is now just 7% of our income. Other sources such as catering and merchandising bring in just 2%. That leaves 31% of our income that must be raised from private donations.
Next season we need to raise £1,600,000 in private donations. We depend on your annual gifts to keep this much-loved hall in good working condition, and to ensure the breadth and quality of our programme.
Please support our annual appeal.

LEARNING AMBASSADORS SUGGESTED £1,000+ A YEAR
Wigmore Hall Learning Ambassadors directly support people who would not otherwise have the chance to be a part of our musical community. Whether this is a child in a nursery in East London, a teenager in the mental health unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital or an asylum seeker at the Cardinal Hume Centre, music has the power to enrich lives and inspire positive change. With your generous donation you can help ensure our musical community is an inclusive one, supporting our work with vulnerable and hard-to-reach people.
SPONSOR A CONCERTFROM £3,500
A unique and meaningful way to support Wigmore Hall and also to mark a special occasion. Many of the concerts listed here are available for sponsorship and we work closely with our sponsors to ensure that they have a very special event here at the Hall.
THE ANNUAL FUND
Our annual appeal launched last year to meet the increasing financial shortfall caused by cuts in funding and the increases in operational costs. For us to book the most talented artists today and maintain all our facilities to the highest standard, we need your regular support.
£100 covers a basket of hand held percussion instruments for a primary school or nursery
£250 would heat, light and clean the Hall for a day
£500 helps us subsidise 25 tickets for young people under the age of 35
£1,000 in our Piano Fund would help us tune and maintain both our Steinway Grands all year round
£3,500 would sponsor a late night concert, attracting new audiences to the Hall
A contribution of any size to the annual fund is enormously appreciated.
CLOSE INVOLVEMENT WITH THE ARTISTIC PROGRAMME
Both Season Patronage and Chamber Music Circle membership are integral to our continued success and designed to offer a closer relationship with the Hall. We will individually acknowledge such commitment with personal invitations from the Director to enjoy the following privileges:
• Two (four for Season Patrons) complimentary tickets and concert programmes for each of the supported concerts
• Named credit in each of the supported concert programmes
• Named credit in all series brochures and donor listings throughout the 2015/16 Season
• Private Bar at each of the concerts
• Opportunities for introduction to the artists in the Green Room

14 SEASON PREVIEW 2015/16
Wigmore Hall36 Wigmore StreetLondon W1U 2BP
Tel: +44 (0)20 7258 8200 www.wigmore-hall.org.uk @wigmore_hall /wigmore.hall
Director: John Gilhooly OBE, Hon FRAM, HonRCM The Wigmore Hall TrustRegistered Charity No. 1024838
‘We love it here. We’ve been coming here for years now, and it’s always a special thing to do.’
Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien
‘The platform, the canvas upon which you can paint, is so hugely important – and Wigmore Hall just happens to be the most beautiful size
and the most beautiful acoustic… The people that come are people like me – they love it, they love music.’
Simon Keenlyside
‘What I think is incredible about Wigmore is that there is no compromise on the highest quality on the one hand,
and on the other hand it is extremely accessible – it doesn’t have to cost you very much at the Wigmore and you can hear great performances
and share the greatest music.’Anthony Marwood
‘For me it’s the most wonderful concert hall in the world, the best acoustic ever, and I feel at home here.’
Brigitte Fassbaender, mezzo-soprano
