EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION?

ToCA is no stranger to rules shake ups. However, there is a reason that this season marks arguably the most significant set of tweaks in the history of the series. It is what ToCA founder and Furi Autosports boss Furinkazen calls “the final ultimate generation” - the fastest, most potent cars seen in this championship ever. So what exactly is new and altered? Well we got our hands on a spare Nissan 370GT chassis—one of the most successful cars in ToCA in the last few seasons—and were given access to it. And we also got “Furi” (as most of the paddock affectionately call him) himself to talk us through the key changes and differences to a ToCA13 racecar.

EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION?

Page 4: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

There are a few visual changes but immediately apparent and also perhaps the easily noticeable is the presence of a large spoiler that is located on the rear of the car.

Such a type of aerodynamic devices were last seen way back in ToCA Season 3 , which was the inaugural season of the NGTC formula, and then were axed and not seen again—until now. So Furi, what has warranted a change? “For one, power. A ToCA car back in Season 3 was restricted to 305 horsepower no matter the model, and this pretty much was the same for the next few seasons. With the tyre construction we used from Dunlop and general behaviour of the car—it wasn’t needed. Racing proved better as the cars were more slippery and slidy—more of a challenge for a driver. Now we have much more power—this seasons Honda is hitting 370hp, the most powerful ToCA car ever and tyres are different and the cars are much wilder. As such, the wings play a more important role as the cars get much more unstable at high speeds. It was nearly unheard of for a car to hit 170mph with ease for many seasons, and now they do it without difficulty.” “The wings are made custom-built for each vehicle. We specified a set of components for each wing (uprights, endplates and the actual plane of the wing itself) and then worked on a size and shape that would work not just for racing, but aesthetically as well.”

EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION?

Page 5: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

“The only exception to this was the Renault—due to the hatchback design we had to work on something slightly different but it works... I hope!!!”. The other visual dif ference that jumped out at me was how low the car was to the ground. Suspension tuning is back and as Furi here again explains was pretty much overdue. “The fixed tuning for past two seasons was great as an initial Introduction to the revamped ToCA line, but also did present its fair share of issues. Pretty much, your car had a fixed set of characteristics, and these would be exaggerated as the race went on by tyre wear. Look at last seasons Mazda—it was understeery and stiff at race start, and when tyres went off it would be just like driving a boat.” Indeed, Furi himself hopes the change will close the field up and also reduce some incidents. “FF drivers especially have no excuse now for saying they just understeered off into someone because of the car. You can now totally alter a cars characteristics. A less than potent base package can now be a race winner with the right adjustments. Of course, conversely you can also go opposite and make a fantastic car and absolute dog to drive.”

EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION?

Page 6: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

The other visual changes are the addition of sets of coloured brake callipers and a car number sticker, optional at the moment but looking to be rolled out in the

next couple seasons. Furi laughs and says “should make it a lot easier for the stewards to penalise people now!” Mechanically one last key component remains. Differentials are regarded by some as a black art. The key to cornering speed and managing tyre wear is often found in these, and whoever masters these will have a key advantage over the opposition. “Well... I can’t work one of these out very well so i’ll leave that to the engineers to do!” exclaims Furi, who before we leave has a last cautionary note. “This is the final ultimate generation of ToCA cars. Once these are finished with, so will ToCA. My advice to all, drivers and onlookers alike—is enjoy it while you still can.” And if it is the final generation, then it truly will be a memorable one at that.

EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION?

KOREA RISING

Look at ToCA11 records and try to find a record of Hyundai. You will find Ranhammer and CnD both making one off races and that is it. Most manufacturers would have packed up and left entirely—after all what benefit is there in supporting a couple tiny teams—but Hyundai played a canny game. Whilst ToCA11 raged on, Hyundai were quietly developing a new specification car. The Genesis platform had one weakness, and that was the chas-sis. It quite simply was poor. Unstable, unwieldy and with no way of tuning it out, it needed tweaks. So when ToCA informed manufacturers such tuning would be legal, Hyundai got to work. Results may be paying off and Hyundai head into the season having almost achieved an impossible turnaround and arguably are strongest manufacturer on the ToCA grid. The question is—how? We decided to ask the drivers...

KOREA RISING

Page 8: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

SNOWCRASH (SYM): “Last season the car was up to par regarding lap times, but suf-fered a) from the bad reputation from the season before, and b) from a rear that felt light at times and had a tendency to step out unannounced. It was difficult to feel what the car was going to do, especially on corner exit...” “This year, with the improved setup possibilities, these deficiencies should be a thing of the past. The car offers much improved traction and seems to be more predictable, which is important in the heat of battle. And while certainly not fastest in the speed traps, it should also offer enough power to put up a fight on the high speed tracks against the powerful competition ....”

KOREA RISING

LANCER (East Coast Motorsports): “For driving, it is very well planted in the turns but is still reasonably competitive down the straights. It's a huge improvement over the car I drove in ToCA10.”

MICHELIN (Michelin Racing): “...the Hyundai just felt the best car for this season. And of course, the freedom in adjusting suspensions, differential and transmission helped a lot in making the choice. All in all, going with the Hyundai was a easy choice for me."

Page 9: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

NEW TRICKS

When you look at the early seasons of the ToCA NGTC era, one name and manufacturer stands out above all others. Volvo were quite simply the most dominant force in ToCA racing for several seasons. The Polestar-engineered C30R’s were small, nimble, and also had a powerful engine. Nearly half the grid at one time had a Volvo and in the ToCA6 makes title they managed 1032 points—a record with new pts system tweaks will likely never ever be beaten. And now, after a gap of 5 seasons, Volvo are back. Polestar have been putting money into the new programme alongside the V8 Supercar one, that has yielded quick success. And they got a link up with an old friend—Furi Autosports, who raced Volvos in a Total of 5 championship wins of differing kinds, are back with them. And this time, potentially after a sweep. But also, they are not alone...

NEW TRICKS

Page 10: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

THE CHAMPION—NINNERS (Polestar Racing Furi Autosports) “Being #1 driver in the most expensive works team in the paddock, does it bring added pressure?” No, not really. This season I feel pretty relaxed about things, I just feel really confident with the machinery and the team I've got, it can't get much better than this!

NEW TRICKS

THE BOSS—FURINKAZEN (Furi Autosports) “What brought you to return to Volvo, how did the deal come about” Volvo approached us midway through last season and we liked what we saw. We tried running C30R’s in ToCA9 but didn’t have the budget in place. However it is really friendly within the team. Many of the personnel worked with us on the C30R project and we all know how to engineer a race winning car. It is probably the best move we have made in the last year.

Page 11: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

THE VETERAN—DRIFTERJOE (Polestar Racing Furi Autosports) “You have driven in ToCA for many seasons in many different makes, but never for Volvo. How does it compare to other cars? The Volvo has nice straightline speed and is good in the turns. It seems to have a small amount of understeer, but you'd expect that in a FWD. Overall it seems like a competitive car.

NEW TRICKS

THE INDEPENDENT—ANDIL (QTF RACING) You are the sole Independent Volvo entry, do you think this will be a handicap in the title race? I think so, yes. This season it's going to be all about setup, and naturally by having multiple cars there's an advantage simply that you can test different setups at least twice as fast as an in-dependent, so I think we'll be a bit behind in that regard. I still think the car will be there or thereabouts, but there's certainly the final 10% of pace to find, and we're not quite there yet.

Page 12: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

DRIVER PREVIEWS

As ever ToCA this season has a large entry. 14 race winners adorn the grid, with all 8 manufacturers represented. There are some wily old veterans and experienced hands, along with a few rookies looking to make a mark. Several teams are there fighting for honours for different makes, including new cars from Honda and the return of Volvo to ToCA. The Overall Championship may be the main prize on offer, but the Independents (Jack Sears Trophy) have their own battles to take care of, and will produce some exciting racing of their own. Also there are several works teams out on the grid, bringing the very best technology from Volvo, Nissan, Renault, Honda, and Hyundai.

DRIVER PREVIEWS

DRIVER PREVIEWS

Furi Autosports are a new name for the oldest team on the grid, celebrating a 10th season after many previous guises, most recently including partnerships with other teams. FAS are back in the big budget spenders with factory Volvo S60 cars on the manufacturers ToCA return. The team always have the line up of drivers—Titles for Joe and Ninners last two seasons are self-explanatory, but team boss Furi’s struggles have pegged them back. As a result, he has left the points scoring hauls to the two ex champions, in a move that might pay dividends. Expect a much stronger run from Furi Autosports as a whole as they seek to add to 4 drivers and 3 teams titles.

Ninners earned #1 spot in ToCA last season through a string of fine well earned results in a season long battle with Andil. Now settled in at Furi Autosports, he has looked fairly comfortable with the Volvo and been up front for much of pre season testing. The big question is can he stay there? The field is likely to be much closer together and even if he wins a first race, it might be even harder to drive through the field in the other events. This will be a season where we see the true Ninners come through.

Plux has signed on with Furi Autosports as an extra driver in case of Joe or Ninners missing any events. As a result Plux has been doing a lot of development with the car and should be a in a good position to Qualify and collect points whenever called upon.

Joe endured what appeared to be more than a mild case of the second season syndrome. His ToCA11 defence was a disaster. Was it the car? Was it Joe himself losing his touch? Was it merely bad luck? Either way it was a poor season and one that Joe will be very much happy to be over with. Now it is a new start and a new season. Joe however has seemed from initial testing to be slightly off the pace. Will he manage to recapture his old form or is it going to be a slippery slide down the order?

SYM somehow achieved a record equalling third ToCA teams championship in ToCA11, and third in succession. This was made more the impressive by the teams mediocre start of the season, where Yeratel had problems getting the Nissan working and Snowcrash simply became a target board. However they worked hard and delivered the goods, and this season have switched over to Hyundai chassis. The Hyundai looks fastest car in the field, something the Nissan never was; and all the odds are in favour of SYM making it 4 in a row and perhaps also grabbing a drivers championship to boot.

DRIVER PREVIEWS

Many in the paddock would call Snowcrash the fastest driver to never ever win the ToCA title. For the amount of race wins he gets over a season(3 last season amongst 9 podiums) he seems to have equal amounts of bad luck. Snow was often seen early on in the season spinning off having been the target of some ill timed overtake or tap. Will his luck ever change?

#72 SNOWCRASH SYM HYUNDAI

Page 19: ToCA12 OFFICIAL SEASON PREVIEW

DRIVER PREVIEWS

After a rough start to the season with mechanical issues Yeratel put in perhaps his most impressive drives to date in ToCA as he picked up 4 wins on his way to 3rd in the ToCA championship. The Hyundai seems a quicker car and Yeratel has been very much near the top of the timesheets in all of pre season testing. Certainly he is a favourite coming into ToCA12.

Last season started for Humberside Racing with massive momentum following a strong latter half of ToCA10. Scaniabebe lead the standings after Silverstone but then it all fell apart. Scania had mechanical issues and disqualifications, whilst Andil bravely rallied and did show the Renault potential by missing out on the title narrowly. However as of now it’s rather concerning in the Humberside camp. The Renault is strong, but with Scania recovering from a hand injury and two fresh faces in the team.. the odds may be up against them.

DRIVER PREVIEWS

Talk about highs, and then lows. Scania left Silverstone after 6 races with the championship lead. Then it all fell apart. How? Two exclusions, budget shortfalls and what appeared to be a complete lack of discipline sent Scania tumbling down to a 11th place finish. This season a lot of pressure is on the boss of the Renault works team—having lost a star driver and also suffered an off track injury. He intends to drive this season, but don’t expect a rapid comeback.

Panoz’s DarkHorse sports team have been around ToCA for a good while now, and after a somewhat trying season with Mazda under the Mazdaspeed banner, they have acquired 2 works prepared Nissans for the coming season. It is a bold Statement as the Nissan is a proven race winning car and even bolder is the addition of the long time Independent runner and 2 time ToCA champion DK to their ranks. Could this be a historic season for all involved?

Panoz had a torrid season last time out with an underwhelming Mazda but managed to pull off some heroic drives and get the car much higher than it had any right to be. Now he is back with a pair of Nissans and this is a seriously strong base package. The car is a proven winner, Panoz is a proven contender in front running machinery and there is no reason why Panoz cannot be a DarkHorse for this championship.

It is light years seemingly since DK scooped a brace of ToCA titles. Spending times with ex works equipment but without the team and support to make full use of it has led to a gradual fall down the grid. However this may change now as he finds himself in what is in effect a factory Nissan for the new ToCA season. With likely equal set ups and the same car as Panoz, this is a legitimate chance for DK to remind us all of how he became a 2 time champion.

The Jack Sears Trophy (formerly the ToCA Independents Trophy) is the championship for drivers who don’t have that big budget backing, the Independents and small teams who run with varying degrees of success through the field. Some of these contenders are already race winners in ToCA and just because they have little “I” next to them on entry list, doesn’t mean they are a class below. As ever, expect a close competition in the Jack Sears Trophy for ToCA12!

THE UNDERCARD—CLIO CUP

ToCA10 spawned a support series for the Renault Clio, that is considered a fine starting point for touring car drivers. It attracted a mixed grid of ToCA veterans, and new drivers, with its credibility boosted by inaugural champion Ninners winning the ToCA title subsequently. Now it is back, in a simpler purer format. There is one overall championship and one teams title. That is it. ToCA Clio Cup Season 2 will support the ToCA circus on nearly all rounds, Monza being an exception, with 2x 15 minute races for drivers to show their worth. It is good to be back, and here is look at the ToCA Clio Cup car followed by a run down of the seasons entries!

Gearbox and differentials are locked and aerodynamics are ad-justable. The car now has a turbo kit active at low RPM’s, which provides quite a kick on acceleration. The exhaust system has also been redesigned and produces more torque and a much more raw engine note. Clio’s support 8 of the 9 ToCA weekends (skipping Monza) and will be an entertaining support to the ToCA12 season with the inaugural champion Ninners defending his crown!
