President’s Message

Welcome to the 75th Annual Canungra Show This year is a milestone year, a time for celebration, reflection and vision.

Some seventy five years ago this community started an annual event that was designed to show case Canungra and its Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial achievements.

The earliest recorded event to be held at the show grounds was a cricket match in 1893. In the years that followed this area was used for recreational activities, picnics, athletics and team sports. In 1916, the Lahey Brothers, owners of a huge softwood mill that was Canungra opened up the township and surrounding area for development. Portion 112, Parish of Tamborine, an area of 1 rood (18 acres), was set aside for the people of Canungra and clearly marked on the lithograph of the sale “Reserve for Sports Ground”. In 1918 the Canungra Progress Association decided to buy the land from the Lahey brothers at an agreed price of £400 with eight years to pay, interest 5%. In 1937 the Standply Mill manager, Herb Doyle organised a 440 yard ring (402m) to be erected. When the new hospital on the top of the hill overlooking the grounds was opened on 5th November 1937, a combined sports day was held. Farm produce was exhibited in the dressing shed whilst horse and athletic events took place within the newly erected ring. Early in 1938 the Canungra Agricultural, Horticultural, Industrial Society and was affiliated with AH&I societies elsewhere. The first Canungra show was held on the 10th September 1938. To this day the Canungra AHI&S holds large events such as the Campdraft, Rodeo, Bull ride, Teams Penning and the Show.

You have the unique opportunity today to be a part of the rich history of the Canungra showgrounds as we seek contributions for a new fence four rail steel to replace the existing timber fence. We are seeking donations for 160 panels of fencing. Each panel will be offered at $250 per panel and it will have a brass plaque recognising your support. A sample of the fence panel is on display near the Stage area. I encourage you to make your expression of interest today and be a part of the future.

As President of the Canungra AHI&S, I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my thanks and gratitude to our committee, judges and volunteers that give so freely of their time and expertise to make our show a special event.

The grounds will be filled with the sights, sounds and smells that we embrace as a country show. The main arena will feature beef and dairy cattle judging as well as a full equestrian program including show jumping, galloway hacks and an array of breeds and classes. Enjoy the skill and strength of the axe men at the wood chopping. Wander down to the Ute Muster. Visit the goats and marvel at the skills of the performance horse events. The main stage will feature performances from our local schools and dance school. Our pavilions feature fruit, vegetable and horticultural displays, cookery, home produce and needle work, fine art, wood work and photography. No show would be complete without the hum and buzz of side show alley and the entertainment and fireworks of the evening programme.

In closing, today is a day to remember. In another 25 years will you reflect on your memories of how the show was and what you did all those years ago? I hope that you are a part of our future. Be a part of a treasured tradition of celebrating as a community its unique character, achievements and heritage.

Darrel Biss President 2012

The Canungra Show - Since 1938

First run in 1938, the Show is an important social event in the community and assists to bind the residents of the region together. It is run and organised entirely by volunteers which in itself is an amazing achievement. This small but dedicated band of volunteers work throughout the year to put together one day of entertainment for the community. In 1938, a group of Canungra locals came together to form the Canungra Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society with a common goal of holding the first Canungra Show. A 440 yard ring had been erected in 1937 and a combined sports and show day held on 5 November that year, however the first Show was so enthusiastically supported by the community that a pavilion was built, dressing shed upgraded and members of the community rallied to assist in the running of the Show. Arthur Caswell, the founding President, was instrumental in getting this first show up and running and he remained President of the Society until 1954. In 1939 the Show was interrupted by the announcement of the outbreak of World War II and Australia's immediate involvement. Although the Show continued in 1940 and 1941, with profits shared between the Show Society and the Patriotic Funds, all Shows and sports were abandoned for the remainder of the war. In 1946, with the district beginning to recover from the ravages of the war years, another successful Show was held. Since then, the Shows have continued annually, although the events and entertainment have changed to reflect changes in the community.

In the early years of the Show, the Cattle Sections were well contested, however the main focus was on dairy cattle: AIS, Jersey and later Guernseys, Friesians, Ayrshires. The Stud Beef Cattle Section was introduced in 1982, abandoned in 1997, but reintroduced for the 60th Anniversary of the Show in 1998. It remains a competitive Section to this day. The Horse Sections have increased considerably with the growth of the Shire as an equine recreational hub. From miniatures to thoroughbreds, the Horse Sections are always popular and draw both local competitors and those from around South-East Queensland. In 2008, the Draught Horse and Plough Horse Categories have been phased out, replaced by a Heavy Horse Category but a myriad of breed classes have been introduced over the years including Appaloosas, Arabians and Australian Stock Horses. Of course the Photography, Produce, Cookery, Art and Crafts displayed in the Fine Arts Pavilion remain a focal point of the Show. Competitors take great pride in their creations and these Sections are always well represented by the locals, giving people the opportunity to showcase talents which might otherwise be hidden at home! One Section which caused a great deal of angst over the years was the Dogs and Pet Parade. In 1938 the Dog Section included fox terriers, greyhounds, Pomeranians, cattle dogs and kelpies and this Section continued to run until 1952. After this time, the only dogs to be show were in the Pet Parade, which had to be discontinued in more recent years as uncontrolled dogs were causing havoc around the grounds during the day! A list of competitors and office bearers of the Show Society through the years reads as a 'who's who' of the district. Families such as the Corcoran's, Finches, Caswell's, Lawler's, Benstead's, Mahony's, Bradfield's, Moriarty's and Lawson's, to name a few (please don't be offended - we couldn't list everyone!) have been instrumental in keeping this great Australian tradition alive in Canungra over the years.
