EDITORIAL
Welcometothisyear’sShowSchedule.
Despitesomeratherdifficultgrowingconditionsthe2012Showswereagreatsuccess;itwasparticularlypleasingtoseetheenthusiasmofthefirstthreewin-nersof thenewLHSJuniorCup-DavidAdams,MattWatsonandNickWatson(aretheWatsonbrothersfedaspecialhorticulturaldietIwonder?).Inowlookforwardtothenewwinnersin2013,thecupbeingawardedtothebestexhibitbyajuniornotpreviouslyhavingwonanawardatourshows.
Themainchangestothisyear’sscheduleareasfollows:
• The order of the horticultural classes has been changed so that SectionAineachshowisnowtheMembersClassesforanymemberwhohasnotpreviouslywonafirstprizeinthatparticularclass,orgroupofclasses,asindicatedinthesection.IfyouenteranyoftheclassesinSectionAyoumaystillenteranyothermembersclassofyourchoice.
SectionBconsistsof,asbefore,therestoftheMembersClasses,SectionCistheBasketorTrugClassandSectionDisnowtheOpenClasses.
Aswewanttoencourageentriesfrommemberswhohavenotpreviouslywonafirstprize,wehavegiventhissectionmoreprominencebyputtingitatthebeginning.Hopefullythischangewillresultinmoremembersenteringthissection.

LastyeartheSpringShowhadanewmembersclasscalled“MotherandChild”whereyouentertwoseparatepotsofthesametypeofplant;oneofwhichhasbeengrownfromacuttingoftheother.Althoughyoucouldchooseanytypeofplantyoulike,wewerehardlyoverwhelmedwithentries.NowfellowmembersoftheSocietyyourespondedtomychallengeacoupleofyearsagoto“showusyourgrasses”,wellletusnow“seeyourMotherandChild”(51)aswell!AlsofortheSpringShowremember toenter inspecialclass12bloomsof thedaffodil“Rapture”whichtheSocietysoldtoyouintheautumn.
Itwasparticularlypleasingtobeabletoincorporateinthisyear’sschedulesomeofNickWatson’sideasfortopicsinthejuniorclasses.Ifyouhaveanysuggestionsforfuturechangestotheshowschedulepleasedonothesitatetoletmeknow.
HavingformanyyearssuppliedthephotographicsubjectsNealMcNamarahasdecideditistimetoletsomeoneelsegiveustheirideas;sothankyouNealforyourcontributions.As fromthe2014showthesubjectsarebeingprovidedbyGrahamRussell,soathankyoutoGrahamtoo.

SHOW RULES
1. Unlessotherwisestatedinthescheduleas‘OPENTOALL’,allexhibitorsotherthanchildren,mustbecurrentmembersoftheSociety.
2. TheCommitteereservestherighttorefuseanyentryand,intheeventofsuchrefusal,itisnotrequiredtogiveanyreasonorexplanation.
3. Noexhibitormaymakemorethanoneentryinanyoneclass.
4. Whereanumberorquantityofplants,flowers,fruitorvegetablesisspecifiedinthescheduleforaclass,vase,dishorcollection,neithermore nor less than the number or quantity may be shown and anexhibitwillbedisqualifiedforanyexcessordeficiency.
If, before an exhibit is judged, any excess or deficiency is noticedandconsideredtobetheresultofanaccidentandnotofanattemptto deceive, the Show Superintendent, Show Secretary or Stewardmay either give the exhibitor (if at hand) an opportunity to correctthemistakeorcorrectithimself/herselfbuttheofficialsshallnotbeunderanyobligationtodosoandanydisqualificationresultingfroman excess or deficiency shall be the exhibitor’s responsibility. ThejudgesmaynotcorrectanyerrorbuttheymaydirecttheattentionoftheShowSuperintendent,ShowSecretaryorStewardtoit.
5. Any exhibit that does not conform to the wording of the schedule(unless corrected in accordance with Rule 4) must be disqualifiedandajudgemustwriteontheentrycard“Notaccordingtoschedule”(NAS)andaddafactualnoteastowhyitismarkedNAS.

6. Anyprizemaybewithheldormodifiediftheexhibitsareconsideredunworthyoftheprizeoffered.
7. Thedecisionofthejudgesshallbefinalontherelativemeritsoftheexhibits,buttheCommitteereservestherighttoreferanypointsindisputetotheShowSuperintendentforadecision.
8. Any protest must be made in writing and delivered to the ShowSecretarywithinonehouroftheopeningoftheShowtothepublic.
9. After judging has taken place, no exhibit or part of an exhibit maybealteredor removeduntil theendof theshow,exceptbyspecialpermissionoftheShowSuperintendent.
10. All exhibits, personal property, etc, shall be at the risk of theexhibitors and the Society shall not be liable for compensation forlossordamagefromanycausewhatsoever.Shouldashowforanycausenotbeheld,noexhibitorshallhaveanyclaimontheSociety.
Exhibitors will be wholly responsible for all claims made by theirown employees under the Common Law or under any statute forcompensationarisingoutoforinthecourseofsuchemploymentforinjuryorotherwise.TheSocietyhasnoresponsibilitytoanybutitsownemployees.
11.TheexhibitortowhomacuporothertrophyisawardedmustreturnittotheShowSecretarythefollowingyearpriortotheappropriateshow.
12.The prize for the best exhibits in the Flower, Vegetable (excludingcollections),PotPlant,Fruit,CookeryandHandicraftclassesis£1.00.
13.Unlessotherwisestatedintheschedule,theprizemoneyinallclasseswillbe£1.00forFirst,60pforSecondand40pforThird.
14.Wherecupsortrophiesareawardedformostpoints,thesewillbeawardedonthebasisof:1st-5points,2nd-3pointsand3rd-2points.Collections,basket/trugandanyspecialclassesareexcluded.A BestExhibit’willbeawardedafurther3points.Intheeventofatieforanawarddecidedonpoints,thewinnershallbetheexhibitorgainingthehighesttotalamountofprizemoney,includingthebestexhibitprizemoney,intheclassesforwhichtheequalnumberofpointshasbeenawarded.

15. Unlesstheschedulespecificallystatesotherwise,anyplant,flower,fruit or vegetable exhibited must be the property of the person inwhosenameitisentered,andmusthavebeengrownbytheexhibitororbeeninhis/herpossessionorcaredforbyhim/herforatleasttwomonthsprior to thedateof theshow. In thecaseofaprofessionalgardener entering produce from the garden in which he/she isemployedtheexhibitsmustbeenteredinthenameoftheemployer.
16. In order to be satisfied that the conditions governing exhibits arefulfilled,theCommitteereservestherightforitsofficialrepresentativetovisitbyappointment,beforeorafterashow,thegardens/allotmentsfromwhichplants,flowers,fruitorvegetableshavebeenenteredforexhibition.
17. Unlessotherwisestatedintheschedule,twoormorepersonsmaynot compete separately in the same class with produce from thesame garden and/or allotment. They may however exhibit in jointnames.Anexceptiontothisrulehoweverappliesinpotplantclasseswheretwoormorepersonsmayexhibitseparatelyinthesameclassa different kind of pot plant to those other members of the samehousehold,providedthattheexhibitorismainlyresponsibilityforthemaintenanceoftheplant.
18. All exhibits should be correctly named. Errors in naming will notdisqualify the entry but the judges should regard correctness andclearness of naming as telling in favour of an exhibit in a closecompetition.Iftheexhibitordoesnotknowthenameofanycultivar,thelabelshouldbearthewords“nameunknown”.
19. PlateswillbeprovidedbytheSocietywhereappropriateandmustbeusedwhenshownintheschedule.TheSociety’svasesmustbeusedforallFlowerclassesexceptwhereotherwiseshownintheschedule.
20. Forthepurposeoftheschedule,adishcomprisesaspecifiednumberorquantityofafruitorvegetable.
21.Unlessotherwisestated,thehorticulturalclassesoftheschedulewillbeconductedinaccordancewiththerulesandstandardscontainedintheRHS’s‘TheHorticulturalShowHandbook2008edition’exceptwhere,undertheschedule,theyobviouslydonotapply.
22. Whenstaginganexhibitin‘anyothervegetable’or‘anyotherfruit’classestheexhibitorshouldrefertothe‘collections’stagingnumbers

(see index ) to ascertain the entry required. However if the exhibitisnotlistedtheyshouldcontacttheShowSuperintendent(orShowSecretary)toobtainarulingonquantitiesrequired.

23.Withtheexceptionofminiatureexhibitsenteredintoclasseswithawidthrestrictionof25.5cm(10inches)orless,allFlowerArrangingexhibitsmustbearrangedinthehall.Flowersandfoliageneednotbegrownbytheexhibitorunlessotherwisestatedintheschedule.Withregardtothenonpetiteclassesonly,inadditiontoanyprizemoneyeachentrantwillbeentitledtoapaymentof£2perentry.

24.Allexhibitsmustbemade,cookedorpreparedbytheexhibitor.ForJams,MarmaladesandotherPreservesthejarsizesarenottobelessthan227g(1/2lb)withatransparentcoveror,ifpreferred,newplastic-lined metal lids. Pickles and chutney must have new plastic-linedmetallids.Jarsorlidsmustnotbearanycommercialnames.
25.ForCakes,Pastries,SweetsandDessertsetc.,theentriesshouldbecoveredwithcling-filmorsimilarprotectivecover.Whereingredientsareoptionalandnotpartofaclassrecipe,exhibitorsshouldindicatewhetheranynutsand/orcheesehavebeenincluded.

26.Allexhibitsmusthavebeenmadebytheexhibitor.

SHOW TIMETABLE
1. Entries are to be submitted in advance of the show. The preferredmethod,whichhelpskeeptheShowSecretary’sadministrationtoaminimum,isbydeliverytooneofthefollowing:

nolaterthan10.00pmontheWednesdaybeforetheshow.
However, entries may also be made by either of the followingmethods:

Entryfeesmaybepaidinadvanceoruponcollectionoftheshowcardsatthehallpriortostagingyourexhibits.
AlimitednumberoflateentriesmaybeacceptedatthediscretionoftheShowSuperintendentupto10.00amonthedayoftheshow.
2.Exhibitsmaybestagedonthedaybeforetheshow(Friday)between7.00pmand9.00pmandonthedayoftheshow(Saturday),between8.00amand10.30am.
3. At 10.30 am, the hall will be cleared of all persons, except thoseauthorised by the Show Superintendent. Judging will thencommence.
4 Exhibitorsandthepublicwillbeadmittedtotheshowat2.00pm.
5.PrizemoneymustbecollectedfromtheHon.Treasurerbetween3.30pm and 4.30 pm after which time any money not collected will beforfeited.
6.Exhibitors may remove their exhibits at the conclusion of thepresentationsandrafflewhichwillcommenceat4.45pm.AnyexhibitsremainingmaybeauctionedforthebenefitoftheSociety.

Followinglastyear’ssuccesswithofferingbulbsofthedaffodil“PinkSilk”tomemberssothatsomeoftheresultingbloomscouldbeenteredintoclass10oftheSpringShow,similararrangementshavebeenmadefor2011.Thistimethebulbis“Avalanche”andsoifyouboughtsomedonotforgettoenter!

Chill for 15 min, meanwhile make the filling by frying the onions gently before mixing with the other ingredients. Pour into the flan case and bake in a moderate oven at 190 degrees C (or 375 degrees F) or gas mark 5 for 30-40 min.
