Uniquely the Abbey…What makes a small Catholic college in North Carolina so unique that our alumni go on to accomplish some of the most amazing things imaginable?

Belmont Abbey College was named one of

the top 50 “All-American Colleges” by the

Intercollegiate Studies Institute and one of

the top Catholic colleges in the United States

by the Cardinal Newman Society.

Just a small sample of our prestigious alumni:

• A NASA flight surgeon

• The nation’s youngest congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives

• A two-term governor

• The head of the Baseball Hall of Fame

• The former head of the Speed Channel

• An NBC News international correspondent

• President of a Catholic college

• Oprah Winfrey’s investment manager

Location: The Abbey’s beautiful, scenic campus with its Gothic brick buildings is just minutes from uptown Charlotte–the nation’s second largest banking city, a major international airport, and the U.S. Olympic Whitewater training center. Its beautiful and temperate climate allows you to enjoy being outside all year long.

Academics: 70% of our faculty have doctoral degrees. You will enjoy the benefits of an education provided by seasoned experts in their fields who care about you and know you by name –not by part-time teacher’s assistants. We’ve invested in your educational investment.

Athletics: What’s better than watching sports? Playing them, of course. For many student-athletes, the Abbey is the “sweet spot.” We’re a championship-winning Division II school. Our coaches help you to compete, to win at your sport and to succeed in your life.

Spirituality: Our Catholicity guarantees a welcome to all. We wouldn’t be authentically Catholic or Benedictine otherwise. After all, over 1500 years of Benedictine tradition have taught us to welcome others “in persona Christi,” as Christ himself.

Become a Crusader

“The Abbey is simply one of the most unique schools in the United States. I can say that unequivocally, because I looked at more than one hundred colleges before I chose to come here.”

Rebekah Weber ’12 Wichita, Kansas

What does it mean to “Become a Crusader?” Simply put, Belmont Abbey College has a rich history of encouraging students to develop a passion for learning and building so as to double their talents and leave the world a better place.

What is your dream?

Do you want to be a doctor who really

start your own company? Help manage

a professional sports team? Teach

children how to learn and watch the

Supreme Court? Not sure yet, but want

a great education that will prepare

you to take on the world when you do

figure it out?

Whatever your crusade in life is,

Belmont Abbey College is the place to

discover it, to nurture it, to make that

dream become a reality.

Crusaders for the ClassroomA recent survey of Human Resource heads

and employers asked what essential skills were

required for success in today’s marketplace

that they noticed were lacking in most college

graduates. All identified the same three areas:• Teamwork/collaboration• Communication in writing and presentation• Creativity

All singled out writing as a major problem with

new college grads. First-Year Symposium (FYS)

is designed to develop these skills. Classes are

small and encourage interaction. The professor

of your FYS is selected especially to help you

develop your ability to write clearly, present

yourself and ideas lucidly, and to interact with

your peers in meaningful and creative ways.

Dr. Gerald Malsbary serves as the Director of FYS.

He selects from the talented faculty professors

who are devoted to first year students. You will

have the skills you need for success. Dr. Malsbary

also teaches Latin and Greek in his spare time.

At the Abbey you will acquire the classical skills that will prepare you for any successful career in the 21st century.

Classical skills for today’s employers!

The Honors Institute is a small learning

community within the college.

Honors’ students can go to any college

or university in the land, but they pick

the Abbey precisely for the Honors

Institute.

While honors students can select

from a wide assortment of majors and

disciplines, all receive an outstanding

academic foundation.

The courses for the Institute are rigorous

and based on the Great Books tradition.

You’ll read the great works from classic

thinkers, like Plato, Aristotle, Descartes,

Locke, and many others.

You will reflect and write on what

constitutes a happy life, what is a just

state, and how the great ideas from the

great works of the Western tradition

have shaped our civilization today. In the

process, you’ll learn how to write, how to

argue, how to listen, how to debate, and

how to present your ideas in community

with other students. These skills will

position you well for graduate school, for

law or medical school, or a challenging

career in any field.

Dr. Gene Thuot is the director of the

Honors Institute. He plays a special

role in the intellectual formation of the

students in The Honors Institute. He

knows and counsels each student to

develop their potential to the utmost.

Crusaders for Words

“There’s nothing to writing,” Hall

of Fame sportswriter Red Smith

reportedly quipped. “All you do is

sit down at a typewriter and open a

vein.”

The Abbey has a refreshingly

different attitude about writing

instruction. We’re so passionate

about teaching good writing, we’ve

created a

revolutionary

writing program

that may well

serve as a

model for other

colleges and

universities.

We threw out much of today’s

most popular collegiate writing

anthologies and created an

anthology that’s custom-made

for Abbey students: The Belmont

Abbey College Reader.

With it, you’ll be given the skills to

think logically and carefully and you

will develop the extraordinary writing

and speaking skills that will serve

you in all aspects of your personal

and professional lives.

The Abbey will help you always to

remember that the truth matters –

and words can help lead us there!

Crusaders for JusticeYou know the world is a fallen place. You hate to see wrongs go unpunished. You want to understand the causes of the imbalance in society, and be an agent that restores that balance. Truth, justice, and order are not simply words or ideas for you.

You are a crusader for justice.

Belmont Abbey’s faculty in Criminal Justice will aid you in your quest. Prior to her career in education, Julia Beeman was a police offi cer and a court administrator.

She witnessed fi rst hand the pain and disruption that crime causes. Her Catholic

faith called her to teach others how to become an instrument of justice, how to balance the scales and make a difference in this fractured world.

You will learn how to understand social problems; develop empirically-supported solutions to these problems; strengthen your oral and written communication skills; and explore the ethical issues surrounding the professional fi eld of criminal justice.

The commitment to the search for truth and societal justice.

Interaction is key for success in college and for

success in life. At the Abbey, you will interact with

your fellow students. You’re not a number here–

#122 out of 350 in your class. You matter! Your

fellow student colleagues matter!

At the Abbey, students learn from each other as well

as from our great faculty. You are not alone in your

college experience. The student to student dynamic

facilitates learning and mastering the material, which

makes college a whole lot more fun.

Crusaders for Teaching

Teaching is not a job, not a profession, but a

calling. As an Elementary Education major, you

will learn how children learn and will be given

the tools to help those children gain a love of

learning.

You are an investor and we will help you learn

how to best invest in children who are the future.

You will join a group of Elementary Education

majors who are highly sought out by school

districts throughout the country.

Dr. Sara Davis Powell is a dedicated educator. She loves watching children’s eyes light up when they grow in understanding. A noted author and professor, Dr. Powell is committed to teaching our students how to be great teachers, imaginative educators of children, and crusaders for kids.

Dr. Powell is widely regarded as an expert in childhood

education. She is an advocate of active student

engagement and is a frequent speaker at regional and

national conferences, where her enthusiasm for teaching

and love for her students has proven contagious.

Dr. Jennifer Ellington has a passion for science. She is rigorous in the

classroom and labs and expects the most from her students.

You’ll learn how to observe the world around you, to understand the

complex systems in which organisms live, to respect the detail and

repetition of experiments, and the logic necessary for sound deductions.

She is a crusader for science. Are you?

Crusaders for the MindPsychology is one of Belmont Abbey

College’s fastest growing fields of study.

Students are drawn to it as they seek to

understand who the human person is, how

the person behaves, as an individual and in

context with other human beings.

You will be given a strong liberal arts

education that is valued by many employers.

Our graduates find that a wide range of

jobs are open to them, particularly in

“people-oriented” areas such as police work,

teaching, community-based service, nonprofit

agencies, management, customer service,

and sales.

Whatever path they chose, our graduates

consistently tell us that they feel that they

were challenged and supported while here,

and that they feel well-prepared to meet the

demands of their jobs or graduate studies.

Our psychology majors go on to become

counselors, lawyers, medical doctors,

law enforcement officers, researchers,

marketing professionals, and great spouses,

moms and dads.

People are complex beings: brain, body,

emotions, behavior, spirit all play a role

in the makeup of the human person.

Dr. Diana Elliott wants her students to

understand the emotional, intellectual,

behavioral, and spiritual complexities of

the human person. She is a crusader for

the mind.

Last summer, Dr. Elliot took a group of

teens to Zimbabwe to lend help in the

hospitals and medical centers of that

impoverished country. That makes Diana

Elliott not only a crusader for the mind,

but for the heart as well!

The human person is a mystery. How we

think, how we grow, how we feel, how we

dream, how we behave, how we live are

endless sources of wonder and worthy of

study. If you are intrigued by these questions

you could be a crusader for the mind.

Crusaders for Faith

Grounded in Catholicism and Benedictinism,

Belmont Abbey students understand the human

condition, Western civilization, and contemporary

affairs in the light of Scripture and Tradition.

You will come to understand that faith and

reason are partners in the human search for

truth.

As Pope John Paul II writes in Fides et Ratio, paragraph 43: “Faith therefore has no fear of

reason, but seeks it out and has trust in it.

Just as grace builds on nature and brings it to

fulfillment, so faith builds upon and perfects

reason.”

Theology faculty members, like Professor Ronald

Thomas, are among the best in the country.

They will help you to better understand what it

means to have faith, how to read the great texts

of the tradition, and how to think well about God,

the Church, the Bible, and the central religious

and moral questions of the day.

Saint Anselm of Canterbury defined theology as “faith seeking understanding.” Faith is a gift, but do you understand that faith and how it has been discussed, debated, formed, and handed down in the last 2,000 years? At Belmont Abbey College you will.

Crusaders for Community

Community requires that one interact daily

with other people and learn to put the needs

of others fi rst. At Belmont Abbey College

students come from 38 different states and

many foreign countries. They live, study, and

work together.

Our residence halls provide a home away from

home, with many activities, a helpful staff,

and skills gained along the way.

Students learn with and from each other, and

they have a blast in the process. They make

friends for life.

Belmont Abbey College

Police enjoy their work.

They love the students,

the faculty, the monks,

and the staff of our

community.

They ensure that the peaceful atmosphere of

the campus allows you to study, have fun, and

enjoy your education.

We sleep better at night because of them and

you will too.

One of the classic hallmarks of the Benedictines is to live in community. Renee Agner is Dean of Residential Life and brings fi fteen years of experience in making a home away from home for our students. BAC residence halls bring together students from 38 different states and many foreign countries. They learn together how to live joyfully, interact respectfully, and how to grow in community.

Crusaders for Sport & Virtue

At Belmont Abbey sport

is like another classroom

for our student-athletes.

You’ll train to win, but

you’ll learn so much

more. Through daily

practice you’ll develop discipline. Through team

work you’ll grow to be a selfless member of

something larger and grander. Through hard work

and under the care and expertise of your coaches,

you’ll become courageous, generous, gracious,

and you’ll steel your will to endure and persevere

on and off the field.

Sport at Belmont Abbey is an occupation of the

whole student.

You’ll learn to develop your mind. This will

perfect your body and optimize performance,

while directing you to acknowledge and praise

the Creator who provided you with these talents

and gifts.

Belmont Abbey College coaches love competition. They love to win. But more importantly, as mentors, they love to see our student-athletes distinguish themselves as students and as men and women of impeccable character who are mature, selfless, noble, and who strive for excellence in every arena of their lives.

Crusaders of Sports If you’re an athlete, you’re going fi nd yourself in very good company.

A passionate love of sports has been a hallmark of the Abbey since our

early years.

In the 1930s, Babe Ruth brought his New York Yankees teams here for

exhibition games and wowed crowds by launching titanic home runs

into the Carolina sky.

In the 1960s, Al McGuire, one of the most colorful characters in

college basketball, got his start here as head basketball coach. He

went on to win an NCAA Division I National Championship in 1977 and

was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

One of McGuire’s recruits was a talented New York City player named

Danny “Sunshine” Doyle. Doyle who joined the NBA after graduating,

“My friend Bill Thierfelder, a great leader and motivator, puts the words and descriptions to what we leaders try to do every day—to challenge ourselves and our teams to be at our best, all the time.”

— From the foreword by Mike Krzyzewski, Head Basketball Coach, Duke University and Team USA

“ is a blueprint for people who want to excel. Dr. Thierfelder’s background and training enable him to expertly intertwine the experiences of sports and life. If you want to learn what it takes to be successful and improve your quality of living, this is the book to read.”

— Jerry Richardson, NFL Team Owner, Carolina Panthers

“If you love peak experiences—the sheer beauty of the perfect act, especially in almost impossible circumstances—the sheer beauty of doing exactly the right thing in the right place, at the right time, in the right way—you will learn here how to achieve them ever more frequently. I don’t quite trust people who don’t love and respect sports. I trust Bill Thierfelder a lot! He gets it—the beauty of the perfect act, and what that takes in grueling practice and perfect alertness and keen self-knowledge. Besides, he loves and admires George Blanda.”

— Michael Novak, Best-selling author of The Joy of Sports (Sports Illustrated’s “100 Best Sports Books of All Time.”)

“As a 5x Major League Baseball All-Star, there were many times where I was “in the zone.” The crowd was silent, the baseball moved in slow motion looking like a beach ball and everything that could go right did. Away from the baseball diamond, my heart yearned to “be in the zone” as well where I could have peace and joy despite the circumstances in my life. Dr Bill’s book will help you play your game and live your life “in the zone!” This book will not only help you to be the greatest athlete you can be but it will inspire you to be the SAINT God calls you to be.”

was known for his flashy behind-the-back passing and tomahawk

dunks at a time when such things were unheard of in the South.

Another head basketball coach, Kevin Eastman, moved up to the

NBA and helped guide the 2007-2008 Boston Celtics to their

first World Championship in 22 years.

Sport, properly directed, develops character, makes a man courageous, a generous loser,

and a gracious victor; it refines the senses, gives intellectual penetration, and steels the

will to endurance. It is not merely a physical development then. Sport, rightly understood,

is an occupation of the whole man, and while perfecting the body as an instrument of

the mind, it also makes the mind itself a more refined instrument for the search and

communication of truth and helps man to achieve that end to which all others must be

subservient, the service and praise of his Creator.

– Pope Pius XII, Sport at the Service of the Spirit - July 29, 1945

Today, Abbey athletics just keeps getting better. We’ve produced a:

g woman’s golf team that won the conference title in its second year of existence

g men’s golf team that swept the conference finals and earned fifth place nationally

g women’s soccer team that won the conference title two years in a row

Crusaders for Ministry“Pastoral ministry is that activity of the University which offers the members of the university community an opportunity to integrate religious and moral principles with their academic study and non-academic activities, thus integrating faith with life.”

Ex Corde Ecclesiae, paragraph 38.Patrick Ford is Director of Catholic

Student Formation and Leadership. He

Catholic Leadership program.

Campus Ministry welcomes and respects

everyone.

We guide students to reinforce the

fundamental Christian values professed by

the Benedictines, the primacy of God in

all things. As a Catholic college, we revere

the sacred, treasure life, and extol the

importance of loving God expressed through

prayer and service to others.

As a Catholic and Benedictine institution

of higher learning Belmont Abbey College

welcomes all people from all walks of life

to its campus and treats them as another

Christ. At such a campus, our faith life is not

incidental to our life as students, teachers,

and administrators: it is integral to our daily

activities and to our interactions with each

other, to our very lives.

We create a community of faith in the

academic environment and assist students

in the formation of a Christian conscience.

We help students in making good moral

judgments according to gospel values and

facilitate personal development and human

wholeness, developing future leaders for

society and the Church.

BenedictineCrusadersBelmont Abbey is a monastery of the Benedictine

Confederation. For almost 1500 years, men have

become monks according to Saint Benedict’s Rule.

Each Benedictine abbey stands independently, with

its own unique character.

We are a community of about twenty monks,

founded in 1876. Although it is located in a thriving

metropolitan area, the Abbey’s grounds preserve a

space of beauty and tranquility for the

Abbey and College.

In keeping with Saint Benedict’s

teaching, the life and work of the

monks of Belmont Abbey take place

primarily at the Abbey.

Some of the monks of Belmont Abbey work in the

College. Many students join them for prayer in the

historic Basilica, Mary Help of Christians. All make

themselves available for spiritual counseling, giving

advice on life’s most important lessons, and teaching

the ways of wisdom. Fr. Arthur Pendleton visits with current crusaders on campus frequently.

Abbot Placid Solari celebrates the sacred mystery of Mass. Many students attend daily Mass.

of Charlotte, our students have access to

many companies, banks, and industries that

have made this area their headquarters.

Those companies come to campus to

interview students. Our students procure

incredible internships in the region. That

practical, real world experience coupled

with a fi rst-rate education is the recipe for

success.

Led by professional corporate trainer

Stephannie Miles, the Offi ce of Career

Development will do everything possible

to ensure your success, both on and off

campus. You’ll gain a competitive advantage

in a challenging professional environment.

Our extensive internships offer complete

career development services, including a

web-based skill and interest assessment,

personalized career coaching, and early

notifi cation of full- and part-time job

positions.

We’re here to coach you in resume/

cover letter writing, how to search for

your preferred position, and practical

interviewing skills. The offi ce assists with

internship searches by maintaining a long

list of contacts and a constantly updated

database of available internships.

Students will also have the opportunity to

participate in career and internship-related

seminars and workshops, on-campus

interviewing, as well as annual career fairs.

Your college years can be some of the best and most fulfi lling in your life. We also want you to be prepared to affect the world positively. Our Offi ce of Career Development was created to help you do that.
