Bishop John J. Snyder was installed as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of St.Augustine on December 5, 1979. He succeeded Bishop Paul F. Tanner who retired.The son of John Joseph and Katherine Walsh Snyder, he was born in New York Cityon October 25, 1925. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1951. OnDecember 13, 1972, Pope Paul VI appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn. Hewas ordained by Bishop Mugavero on February 2, 1973 at the Church of Our Lady ofPerpetual Help, Brooklyn. In October 1979, Pope John Paul II transferred him to theSee of Saint Augustine where he was installed on December 5, 1979. His Episcopalmotto is “Peace in Christ.”

BJS HistoryBishop John J. Snyder High School was founded in 2002

and is named after The Most Reverend John J. Snyder, D.D.,the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Saint Augustine. Theschool opened on August 14, 2002 with a ninth grade class.BJS is a member of the National Catholic EducationAssociation (NCEA), the Florida Catholic Conference (FCC),the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA), the FloridaHigh School Athletic Association (FHSAA) and theAssociation for Supervision and Curriculum Development(ASCD). The school is accredited by the SouthernAssociation of College and Schools/Council onAccreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI).

introduction to the many wonderful things that are happening at BJS. I tell newstudents all the time, “If you come to school at 8:00 and leave at 2:50, you’ll get agreat education.” But make it a point to get involved in the life of the school. That’show you attain all the benefits that BJS has to offer.”

Deacon David YazdiyaPrincipal

Deacon David Yazdiya, Principal Deacon Yazdiya is the founding Principal of Bishop John J. Snyder High School which he opened in 2002 to

a freshman class of 78 students. David is a graduate of San Jose Catholic School and Bishop Kenny HighSchool. He earned his BA from Saint Meinrad College in Indiana. David also has a Masters of EducationalLeadership from the University of North Florida.

Before becoming principal of BJS, David was principal of St. Matthew’s Catholic School and also taught at St.Paul’s Catholic School and at Bishop Kenny High School.

In 2006, David became a member of the Permanent Diaconate and is assigned to St. Matthews CatholicChurch. David is married to Carol Corrigan Yazdiya and they have three children.

Bishop John J. Snyder High School offers a college preparatory program devoted to educating students in aCatholic environment.

We offer a variety of Advanced Placement courses, honors courses and electives. The following quality pointscale has been adopted to ensure that our GPA’s match the State University System’s guidelines. Students whoreceive a D or lower will not earn additional quality points.

Mission StatementThe mission of Bishop John J. Snyder High School, a college preparatory school, is to assist in the ongoing

formation of young men and women of competence, conscience and compassion, faithful to the Gospel andteachings of the Catholic Church.

The Administration & Faculty of Bishop John J. Snyder High School is a dedicated group of men and women.They are state certified in their subject areas with 50% holding a Master’s Degree in their particular field of study.The most up-to-date teaching practices and technology are utilized by the faculty creating enthusiastic learners.

EDLINEEdline is an online tool available to students at BJS.

Students receive an access code, which enables themto access grades, utilize additional resources and bereminded of school events. Parents also receive a code so they may monitor their student’s success. Teachersupdate grades on Edline once a week and many use this website to post homework, reference materials andquiz or test dates.

FoundationsFoundations provides assistance to students who

demonstrate the ability and determination to perform collegeprep academic tasks, yet are unable to express theirpotential due to a variety of learning challenges anddifficulties. Criteria for acceptance include the ability of astudent to perform to his or her academic ability when utilizing brain based tools and strategies, andprovisions and supports accessed through FOUNDATIONS.

The Foundations coordinator works with guidance counselors, parents, students and teachers in aconsultative and collaborative manner with regard to a student’s strengths and needs with the Bishop JohnJ. Snyder High School learning community to ensure a successful academic experience.

The School MascotThe Mascot of Bishop John J. Snyder High

School is the Cardinal. When asked if he everwanted to be Pope, Bishop Snyder replied, “No,but I always wanted to be a Cardinal, but Icouldn’t hit a curve ball.” Bishop Snyder’s lovefor the St. Louis Cardinals is strong and he hasbeen a loyal fan of this ball club for many years.He personally chose the mascot for Bishop JohnJ. Snyder High School.

AthleticsIn only a short amount of time,

the Bishop John Snyder AthleticDepartment has built acomprehensiveprogram that offers your athlete anopportunity to be part of competitiveteams. As a Class 3A high school,Bishop Snyder competes in 15Varsity and Junior Varsity sportsagainst someof NorthFlorida’s bestschools. Thefuture is verybright for theCardinals, asnew athleticfacilities andour recentlycompletedtrack andfield complexwill onlyimprove ourcommitmentand determination. Our athletes havecontinued to succeed at the District,Regional, and State levels, with ourfirst State Championship in softball in2006. Our talented band, drum line,and cheerleaders support and cheeron our athletic teams throughout theyear.

All of our BJS coaches are trainedand sport certified adults. Practicesare generally held after school butmay occur on weekends and over theholidays. Students must maintain acumulative 2.0 GPA in order toparticipate on any athletic team.

The Office of Campus Ministry plays a role in the goal offorming students of competence, conscience, and compassionwith a commitment to Christian Service. The departmentcoordinates opportunities for spiritual growth, and oversees theChristian Service Program. The Campus Ministers serve thefaculty and students as Christian witnesses. They also providereligious academic resources and pastoral counseling. All arewelcome to come by the Office of Campus Ministry at any time.

CarpoolCarpool information is compiled annually from student registration forms and is made available to interested

parents during the summer months. Carpool lists, grouped by zip code, are available during the school yearfrom the front office for parents to utilize to make individual arrangements.

Tuition AssistanceCatholic education is one of the best values a family can give their children. Not only from the values instilled in our

students every day but also for the value that a Catholic education costs. Still, there are times when the cost of a privateCatholic education is more than some families can fully afford.

Bishop John J. Snyder High School provides limited financial assistance to families in need. Upon registering your son ordaughter for enrollment into BJS, you apply for tuition assistance through www.factstuitionaid.org (you will need to providetax return documents and recent W2 documents). A non-biased decision is made and our finance department will notifyyou of the assistance offered.

Some students may qualify for additional tuition assistance through the McKay Scholarship (www.floridaschoolchoice.org)or through Step Up for Students (www.stepupforstudents.org). Criteria for these programs may be found in our TuitionBrochure or online. You can also contact Mary Anne Briggs for further details on these programs.

Admission to Bishop John J. Snyder High School iscontingent upon a student graduating from 8th gradewith no expulsions or serious disciplinary problems. Weaccept Catholic and non-Catholic students fromCatholic, public and other private schools. Studentsseeking admission their senior year from a public,private or Catholic high school within the Diocese of St.Augustine will not be accepted.

Diocesan School’s RegistrationRegistration packets will be mailed out to the Diocesan

elementary school students. Completed packets should bereturned to the BJS office.

Once the documents have been reviewed, you will be contacted toset up an interview for admission. Upon acceptance to Bishop John J. Snyder High School, the Registration Feeis due. Course selection and confirmed registration cannot be completed until this financial obligation is met.

Academic PlacementThe criteria used for placement in Math, Science, and

English courses include: Teacher recommendations,report card grades and the EXPLORE placement test.

EXPLORE TestThe EXPLORE placement test will be given at Bishop

John J. Snyder High School. There is a fee for taking theEXPLORE test. This test is mandatory and the results willbe used to place students in fall classes. We stronglyencourage students who plan to attend Bishop John J.Snyder High School in the fall to take the test at ourlocation. Bishop John J. Snyder High School does notrequire summer school attendance based on EXPLOREtest results.
