Congratulations to our 2012
Kindergarten Graduates!
“You have brains in your head. You
have feet in your shoes. You can steer
yourself any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know

2012 Kindergarten Graduation
On May 31, 2012 HSADD teachers and staff gathered at the community center to welcome
parents and families of our kindergarten graduating class. The evening was complete with
performances by the graduates and pomp and circumstance diploma ceremony. Afterwards
everyone was treated to a delicious cake and punch reception to congratulate the Kindergarten
class of 2012.
The Director’s Letter
Dearest Parents/Guardians,
This is the summer issue of the Horizon newsletter. I hope you all are enjoying your summer. Please remember
that the first day of school will be Monday, August 20th. You can find the supply lists for next school year for all
grade levels on the school website under the enrollment tab. More importantly, summer bridge books and
summer reading packages are available in the office for $5. The purchase of these books will make sure that
our students read over the summer and review what they learned during the school year. It is extremely im-
portant as studies show that students who do not read in the summer months fall three months behind in read-
ing comprehension when compared to those students who do.
Our enrollment for the next school year still continues. All of our efforts to advertise Horizon Science Academy are designed to
reach out to more families who are as great and as caring as you. Therefore, it’s important that you spread the word about the suc-
cess stories at Horizon in your neighborhood and among your friends. To help you with that, we are offering a $25 gift card for the
families who refer new students to join our Horizon family.
As our enrollment numbers increase, our scores in the state tests increase at the same time. Together with this newsletter, you will
receive the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) Spring 2012 scores. Immediately, you will see the improvement of your child’s
scores from last year. We, as staff at HSA-D2, are extremely confident that we will make a big impact in your child’s education and
future goals and improvement with each passing year. Education is an extremely tough business and it takes time to see the fruits
of the good job only some schools like Horizon can achieve. Please bear with us as we grow and improve every year.
HSA-D2 raises the bar a little more every year, and we provide more equipment and materials for student and staff use. Your child
will see a more equipped school when they come back from the summer break. They will see more books, TV’s, smart boards,
computers and many other technological devices in classes. We are also planning to move towards e-books starting with 8th grad-
ers this year. Our 8th graders will be using I-Pad’s to reach their e-text books this fall, and hopefully more grades will be added
each year.
HSA-D2 recognizes the importance of sports and other after school activities besides academics. In this regard, during the spring
months we began the process of holding some practices; and this fall we will be organizing school sports teams for both boys and
girls, such as basketball and soccer. We are hoping to receive at least some medals and trophies by participating in the tourna-
ments and competitions in the area.
Lastly, our building improvement projects continue. The installation of the playground and construction of the new parking lot are
both in process. The old parking lot will be resurfaced and some landscaping will be added around both old and new parking lots.
Wishing you all a great summer, and looking forward to seeing you on the 20th.
Sincerely,
Mr. Matt

Columbus Art Show
This year there were several winners at the Concept
Schools Art Show in Columbus. Many students sub-
mitted work, but there were 4 winners from our
school specifically. Congratulations to Mason
Metcalf, Christopher Long, Esmira Ragimova, and
Khadizha Kuchiyeva!! Three of these students were
able to go Columbus on May 12, 2012 to be honored
by members of Concept Schools.
Way to go HSADD students!

Rock the Test! OAA Week
Monday April 30th was the day before the OAA’s began for our 3rd – 7th grade students. This year
the primary teachers planned and organized the “Rock the Test” Pep Rally under the direction of
Ms. Pitocco. All staff members were given hand-painted t-shirts to wear and the students were
treated to a test prep skit, games, prizes, and a visit from
Heater the Dragon. Throughout the week, staff and students
encouraged one another to do their best on the OAA tests.
The primary grades made “survival kits” that included items
like tissues, erasers, and mints. Students also received small
prizes for attendance and a complementary parfait from
McDonalds every morning. By the end of the week, our
HSADD students truly “Rocked the Test!” Congratulations!
International Children’s Festival
On May 12, 2012 the Turkish-American Society of Michi-
gan hosted their 2nd Annual International Children’s Festi-
val – a multicultural event at Wayne State University in the
heart of Detroit, Michigan. The festivities included ethnic
performance groups from: Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Chi-
na, Germany, India, Iraq, Japan, Macedonia, Mexico, Paki-
stan, Poland, Republic of Congo, Romania, Russia, Turkey,
USA, USA Urban Hip Hop and West Africa (Senegal, Mali,
Guinea), Turkish food delicacies, face painting, popcorn,
cotton candy, country exhibits, and various entertainments
for children. With more than 1,000 people in attendance,
our Kolbasti dance group was one of the 20 groups selected to perform. This was truly an honor
and HSADD would like to congratulate our girls on a performance well done.
Doughnuts for Dads and Muffins with Mom
On April 20th and May 11th, 2012 the
students and staff of HSADD invited
special guests to breakfast; their dads
and moms. The Friday before Moth-
er’s Day on May 11th, mom was treat-
ed to muffins with her child/children.
Since we are on summer break for Fa-
ther’s Day, we made a special day for
just the dads on April 20th. We want
all the parents to know just how much
we appreciate you and how much your children love you. Thank you for being involved!
School Play ~ Aladdin
On April 26, 2012, members of Miss Brokenborough’s model-
ing club put on their version of the Disney production Alad-
din. It was well attended and the students did a great job with
their parts.
Dayton Dragons’ Baseball Game
May 4, 2012 was the 2nd annual Horizon Science Academy Dayton night at the Dayton Dragons
game. This year we were treated to a private lawn section with tickets costing just $7 and bus
transportation from First Student to and from the game. The turnout was a little smaller this year,
but those that braved the thunderstorms had a great time, despite a Dragons loss.
Cox Arboretum
On May , 2012, our K-2 students visited Five Rivers MetroParks Cox Arbore-
tum. The James M. Cox, Jr. Arboretum Foundation was formed when the
Cox Family donated their property to create an arboretum. In 1972, they
gifted the land to Five Rivers MetroParks. This beautiful 189-acre facility is
a special place for visitors to escape among trees, shrubs, specialty gar-
dens, mature forests, and prairies. Cox Arboretum MetroPark is also home
to a native-Ohio Butterfly House. Cox Arboretum contains significant natural
areas including two high quality mature woodlots, dense cedar glades, es-
pecially beautiful succession areas (containing an abun-
dance of dogwood and redbud trees), planted tall-grass
prairie, and created wetlands.
Horizon’s Got Talent! Horizon Science Academy Dayton
Downtown held their second
“Horizon’s Got Talent!”, Talent
Show on June 5, 2012. The students
had a great time watching and par-
ticipating. We have many accom-
plished students with diverse abili-
ties in music, dancing, and the mar-
tial arts. This year was a great suc-
cess and we hope to have even
more fun for years to come.
Spring Concert
On May 17th, 2012, the spring concert was held and produced to the theme of the Lion King by
Miss Brokenborough. Each class had a performance from one of the Lion King productions; Dis-
ney’s Lion King, Disney’s Lion King 1 ½, Disney’s Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, or the Broadway
production of the Lion
King. It was one of the
most fabulous concerts
yet. Way to Go!!
Carillon Historical Park
Our third and fourth graders visited Carillon Historical Park on May, 30, 2012. The Park is situat-
ed on a beautiful 65-acre campus between the Great Miami River and a glacial moraine. There
are 25 historical buildings and interaction with the hundreds of artifacts in the exhibit. The stu-
dents had a great time learning history by seeing all historical places. They had an opportunity
to see original 1905 Wright Flyer III, the world’s first practical airplane and National Historic
Landmark, the B&O steam locomotive, and the first self-starter automobile.
National Museum of the U.S. Air Force
Grades K-2 went to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Fairborn, OH. The National Mu-
seum of the U.S. Air Force is the world's largest and oldest military aviation museum. The stu-
dents were able to explore past and present air craft carriers as well as learn how military lives
have changed throughout the years with the advancement of technology.
Cincinnati Zoo
On May 23, 2012, all students in grades K-7 were taken on an animal adventure to the Cincinnati
Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Everyone was able to have a good time exploring the animals in
their “natural” habitats. The Zoo is the only place to meet over 500 animal and 3,000 plant spe-
cies. It is internationally known for its success in the protection and propagation of endangered
animals and plants, and engages in research and conservation projects worldwide.

Horizon Science Academy
Dayton-Downtown
The mission of Horizon Science Academy Dayton Downtown is to create a learning community in which:
Teachers, parents and students work together to develop young people who are confident and achieve
academic excellence in a powerful college prep curriculum;
Students do not question “whether” they will go to college, but instead ask “when” and “where”;
Students understand that with hard work, dreams are possible;
Students develop the skills in math, science, and technology necessary to become bold inquirers,
analytical thinkers, and ethical leaders in the 21st Century
Students are empowered to become productively engaged in the local community and broader society.
We create a school culture that is built on success, respect, and accountability. The founders of HSA Dayton
Elementary School recognize that the success of students is dependent upon the school’s ability to create a
culture that fosters meaningful, sustained relationships between teachers, students, and parents and holds all
stakeholders responsible for outcomes.
It is this culture that forms the foundation of our school. Horizon Science Academy Dayton Downtown builds this culture from the point of first contact with families and throughout the students’ academic experience.
