dear friends,

As president of the board of directors, I am proud to serve during an exciting time for the Colorado Chautauqua. My colleagues on the board and I are honored to help advance the mission of the Colorado Chautauqua Association (CCA) through the implementation of strategies to ensure a sustainable future for the Colorado Chautauqua — physically, programmatically, and financially — consistent with CCA’s mission to preserve, perpetuate and improve the site and spirit of the historic Chautauqua.

In 2012, CCA’s board of directors and staff engaged with the community to discuss ideas to ensure a vibrant and sustainable future for the Colorado Chautauqua.

The dialogues regarding our “2020 Plan” vision were incredibly valuable in helping to identify ideas the community embraced (safety, accessibility) and others where it urged extra caution (new venue space). These conversations helped us refocus our efforts to serve the community’s needs and desires.

As a result, City Council authorized a process to articulate “guiding principles” for the City’s and CCA’s collaborative stewardship of Chautauqua, focusing specifically on the place management and financing roles and responsibilities of each. The resulting Chautauqua Guiding Principles approved by City Council on December 4, 2012 “represent a shared statement about the nature of the Chautauqua area and the manner in which its primary stewards (the City of Boulder and the Colorado Chautauqua Association) intend to collaborate in the planning and management of its future. Not intended to define the specific structures, processes or agreements needed to enact them, subsequent work will evaluate options for putting the Guiding Principles into action.”

I encourage you to engage with us and join us for the Annual Meeting of the Membership on July 15, 2013. Also, you might consider seeking election to the 2013/14 CCA Board of Directors. Check your email this June for upcoming information about the Annual Meeting of the Membership and the annual election of the Board of Directors.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve the Colorado Chautauqua. Become a part of Chautauqua’s exciting future and join me in supporting the Colorado Chautauqua Association in its stewardship of this very special community asset.

dear friends,

Greetings from Chautauqua and thank you for another memorable year!

As I serve my tenth year as Executive Director, I am grateful and honored to be associated with something so special; to be entrusted with stewardship of the site and the spirit, and be part of ensuring Chautauqua’s sustainable future.

2012 was a wonderful year at Chautauqua. In spite of drought, heat and threat of wildfire, the association completed many large capital projects, continued to elevate and expand its program offering, and ended the year in strong financial position. This would not be possible without the generous support of the community.

Thank YOU — our greater Chautauqua community, of members and donors, lodging and dining guests, concert goers, frequent and infrequent visitors — for your enduring support and for helping to create another tremendous year for the Colorado Chautauqua.

Thank you to our long-time collaborators Colorado Music Festival, and our new collaborator in the Chautauqua Dining Hall, Three Leaf Concepts, as well as our corporate sponsors and our generous donors. We thank the National Park

Service Intermountain West Office and History Colorado’s State Historical Fund for grant funding and technical support. There are many people to thank at the City of Boulder (CCA’s landlord — but more importantly, our partner) — Mayor Matt Appelbaum and the City Council, City Manager Jane Brautigam and her staff, the Landmarks Board and staff, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Open Space and Mountain Parks Department, Public Works/Transportation, Community Planning and Sustainability and the City Attorney’s Office. I add my personal thanks to the CCA Board of Directors for its dedication and support, and to our tireless and devoted staff who make it all happen every day of every year.

As we look to the immediate future, we look forward to working with the City on projects that enhance the experience of Chautauqua for all of its many visitors — from school kids arriving on buses for the first time to concert goers to wedding celebrants to overnight guests, and those who walk their dogs.

The Colorado Chautauqua will present its 115th season this summer and I invite you to join us in celebrating our wonderful community jewel and supporting its vibrant future.

Sincerely,

Susan Connelly, Executive Director Colorado Chautauqua Association

preservation & sustainability

Improving the health and longevity of the National Historic Landmark

Continued physical enhancements to the visitor experience of the Colorado Chautauqua are a constant priority for CCA. In addition to routine ongoing repairs and maintenance of cottages, lodges and grounds, there are many major projects to be accomplished each and every year.

Wildfire Mitigation / Emergency Preparedness

As drought and subsequent fire danger have become an annual reality in Colorado, the association made emergency preparedness and wildfire mitigation plans its number one priority for 2012.

To ensure the safety of our residents, guests and nearby neighbors, wildfire mitigation efforts included a building-by-building inventory of both privately-owned and CCA-owned cottages and public buildings to determine “defensible space” needs in order to reduce exposure should a wildfire occur. Combustible fuels (limbs, underbrush, accumulated

debris, etc.) in and around the campus and buildings were identified and removed. A wildfire evacuation plan was established and communicated to all lodging guests and residents. These plans were well into implementation when the fires of June 2012 arrived in Boulder. Thankfully, there was no need to test their efficacy.

CCA would like to thank the Boulder County Sheriff ’s Office for providing its community service crew resources who completed a significant amount of thinning and clearing of fuels, especially in some of the heavily vegetated areas around the perimeter of the campus, as well as the City of Boulder’s Open Space & Mountain Parks and Parks & Recreation departments for thinning and trimming around the perimeter areas that interface with the forests and meadows.

capital improvements

Preserving the site and enhancing the visitor experience of Chautauqua

Each year, Colorado Chautauqua Association invests approximately one million dollars in capital improvements and routine repair and maintenance of the 67 historic buildings and 26 acres of grounds within the association’s leasehold portion of the Colorado Chautauqua National Historic Landmark.

Major capital improvements for 2012 saw upgrades to numerous cottages including: tiling of bathroom floors, improved plumbing fixtures, enhanced cottage ventilation, kitchen cabinet improvements, repainting, installation of high efficiency direct vent heating units and efficient tankless water heaters.

Columbine Lodge also received much needed attention including the replacement of several kitchens, replacement of all the carpet in the common areas and in several individual units, installation of new ceiling fans and energy efficient lighting, and repainting of the exterior trim, woodwork and porches.

Exterior building work in 2012 included repainting of the Community House and four cottages as well as touch-ups on the Auditorium and Missions House Lodge. Additional projects included the installation of a new roof and gutter system on one cottage, continuous reconstruction of several cottage entry stairs and landings and replacement of sections of foundations.

In keeping with the goals and standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) while working within the context of the physical layout of the campus and historic nature of the buildings, CCA continually makes modifications to increase accessibility for all guests. ADA upgrades in 2012 included the installation of a new accessible ramp on the east side of the Auditorium and installation of an automatic door opener system on the south doors of the Academic Hall. The association currently has three ADA compliant accessible lodging units with plans to convert two more units in 2013 and 2014.

Rehabilitation of Waterwise Garden

Originally created in 1993, the Waterwise Garden became overgrown over the years due to the self seeding process of many plants used in the garden, plant species migrated from one area to another, plant species that were in the original design disappeared, and species that were not intended for the garden appeared in many locations.

The garden rehabilitation project to restore it to its original design and beauty began in the fall of 2011 with a major clean up, weeding, thinning and removal of several invasive species.

The project was completed in 2012 with the installation of more than 850 new plants, using the original garden design as a guide for plant selection and location; heavy mulching to discourage the growth of weeds and encourage moisture retention; and the installation of a new water conserving irrigation control system including the latest advancements in spray heads and other system components.

Dining Hall Renovation

Historic Chautauqua Dining Hall prepares for next 115 years with new operator, new roof, structural and energy upgrades and interior enhancements.

Starting in October 2012 and continuing through April 2013, the Chautauqua Dining Hall was teeming with workers improving the health and sustainability of the beloved building with structural and energy efficient upgrades. As stewards of this landmarked building, and guided by our commitment to preservation, CCA has made every effort to lovingly preserve this iconic building while simultaneously utilizing new building science to make the building “healthier” for its longevity and its patrons’ comfort year-round.

The badly deteriorated wood shingle roof was replaced with a dimensional composite roofing material approved by the City of Boulder Landmarks Board and the State Historical Fund. Remedial framing work was necessary to support the weight of the new roofing materials. Exterior trim, siding, and gutters that were deteriorated have also been replaced.

Interior rehabilitation work incorporated energy efficiency upgrades including strategic air sealing and installation of

high performance insulation in both the crawlspace/basement level of the Dining Hall and the attic, installation of high efficiency, state-of-the-art heating and cooling equipment with an engineered delivery system (duct work). The building has also been equipped with tankless water heaters, thus reducing the energy required to create domestic hot water. The building will also be fitted with an energy efficient lighting package, water conserving plumbing fixtures and diagnostic energy saving tools.

These energy efficiency upgrades are directly aligned with the association’s mission to be the most sustainably operated National Historic Landmark in the country. The association continues to demonstrate how the character, longevity and comfort of historic buildings can be improved while reducing environmental impacts.

The Colorado Chautauqua Association is grateful for technical support and financial contributions to the Dining Hall project from the State Historical Fund, the City of Boulder and the National Park Service.

Grand Re-opening April ‘13

The Dining Hall reopened in April 2013 under the operation of Three Leaf Concepts (TLC).

Owned by Lenny and Sara Martinelli, TLC operates the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse and owns and operates other award-winning restaurants including Leaf, Aji, Naropa Café, The Huckleberry and Zucca as well as Three Leaf Farm and Three Leaf Catering.

After 16 years of successfully running the Dining Hall, Susan and Rick Stein stepped down in late 2012 to focus on their fine Italian dining restaurant, Alba, and enjoy more time for personal pursuits.

Cottage 100

Opening 2014.

Located next to the Dining Hall, Cottage 100 will open in spring of 2014 and will offer a delicious selection of coffee drinks, homemade ice cream, snacks and candies, as well as basic hiking supplies, gifts, and Chautauqua merchandise. Cottage 100 will be operated by Three Leaf Concepts, the operators of the Dining Hall.

The selection of the Three Leaf Concepts team was part of a ten-month process by the Association to secure new operators for the 114-year old iconic restaurant.

Highlights of the renovated interior include beautifully refinished floors that had been hidden under carpet for years, two stone fireplaces, and a redesigned, cozy bar and lounge area for casual food and beverages. The “back-of-house” floor plan also has been updated to more efficiently and expeditiously serve guests on busy nights. Dining guests can expect a full array of Colorado Bistro cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner year-round and can expect to enjoy produce from Three Leaf Farm in Lafayette as part of the new menu. For reservations, please call 303.440.3776.

cultural residency

Welcoming our guests

Since opening day in 1898, people have traveled long distances to have a chautauqua experience in Boulder. Initially a tent city, seasonal cottages and lodges were built and rebuilt over time, resulting in a unique neighborhood that for its first century was primarily for summer use only. Today, 60 of the 99 cottages and the Missions House and Columbine lodges are owned by CCA, with nightly rental available year-round.

All of the cottages and lodges at Chautauqua have been lovingly upgraded to be energy efficient, comfortable and cozy. Five cottages are EPA Energy Star rated, indicating achievement of the highest standards in energy efficiency.

The unusually early and sustained hot weather pattern in June 2012 brought on numerous requests from our lodging guests for cooling in individual cottages. In quick response to the obvious need, CCA purchased a number of portable air conditioning units. While our approach of using whole house fans has been aligned with our environmental sustainability and other goals, they are only effective to a point and simply were not able to provide adequate comfort during last year’s periods of high and/or sustained heat. Whether the heat wave experienced in June 2012 was an aberration or is a portent of what can be more frequently expected in the future, CCA is now equipped to supplement the whole house fans with additional cooling strategies to maintain guest comfort.

New couches were placed in many cottages in 2012 and the installation of enhanced campus-wide Wi-Fi now provides lodging guests with unlimited, free internet access.

In 2011, CCA implemented a cottage-wide composting program in which guests can now participate — diverting all food and compost waste from the landfill. It is estimated that 75% of guests participated in this new program in its first full year.

Not only is staying in a cottage or lodge a fundamental element of the Chautauqua experience, but lodging revenue is the economic engine for CCA, funding the vital preservation and maintenance activities and subsidizing public programming throughout the year. In 2012, revenue from cultural residency contributed 57% of CCA’s total revenue.

Each year, Chautauqua welcomes overnight guests from around the globe, nationally, regionally, and often locally to participate in the chautauqua experience. Please join us — winter, spring, summer or fall!

arts & culture

From classical to popular music, dance to silent films, authors to actors, and art shows to theater, 2012 was packed with many memorable Chautauqua experiences.

The 2012 Summer Series attracted enthusiastic crowds of all ages to a diverse array of programming, including the return of modern dance to Chautauqua with the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble and the expansion of our classical music offering by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. The summer concert series was headlined by crowd favorites such as Bob Weir with the Weir Robinson Greene Acoustic Trio as well as by younger acts Blind Pilot, Andrew Bird, and Gregory Alan Isakov, all performing to sell out crowds. Silent films with live musical accompaniment returned for a 27th consecutive season while audiences were awestruck by the cinematography and adventure in the premiere of the REEL Rock 7 film festival. Audiences gained inspiration from wordsmiths Margaret Wheatley and Tom Thomas, and through song from the Young@Heart Chorus.

An integral part of the summer programming for more than three decades, the Colorado Music Festival once again provided inspirational classical and world music to patrons of all ages during its annual six week season. Patrons were treated to a stunning visual and musical presentation of Holst’s “The Planets” while a reenactment of “Cinderella and Brundibar” featuring holocaust survivor and one of the original cast members, Ela Weissberger, bore witness to the resiliency of the human spirit.

Outside the Auditorium, theater was abundant at Chautauqua. Hikers hit the trails to enjoy Theatre-Hikes’ “As You Like It” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Diners enjoyed a special course of “Shakespeare À la Carte” from the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and theater aficionados participated in the inaugural three-day New Play Festival at the Community House.

Other 2012 year-round Community House programming featured a robust author and science series and an eclectic mix of Community House concerts ranging from folk, bluegrass, and soul to body percussion.

The Colorado Chautauqua Association is grateful for the many wonderful collaborations with the following partners to produce the diverse offering of 2012 events and programming for the enjoyment by guests of all ages: Boulder Arts Association, Boulder History Museum, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Colorado Music Festival, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, LOCAL Theater Company, NOAA, NCAR, Nobody In Particular Presents (NIPP), Theatre-Hikes Colorado, The WILD Foundation, Thorne Ecological Center, Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center, REEL Rock Film Tour, and VIA Mobility Services.

Summer of 2013 will mark the Colorado Chautauqua’s 115th season. Please join us in celebrating our beautiful National Historic Landmark and all that it has to offer.

Big Ass Fans™

To supplement the evaporative coolers and as part of the association’s ongoing strategy to enhance patron comfort in hot weather, CCA has installed two large-scale ceiling fans in the Auditorium for the 2013 season. Used in performance spaces and concert halls around the world, the Big Ass Fans™

are high tech fans designed to move large amounts of air, silently. This consistent air movement will help to create and maintain consistent temperatures from ceiling to floor and wall to door.

Ticketing Services

To meet growing customer expectations and improve the overall ticket purchasing experience, CCA deployed a new online ticketing software in early 2012. Through this state-of-the-art software, patrons are able to select their own seats, view the stage from their selected seats, and choose to print their tickets at home.

HOP 2 Chautauqua

On average, approximately 18% of 2012 concert patrons chose to save on gas and

parking hassles and ride the free HOP 2 Chautauqua to the Chautauqua Summer Series and Colorado Music Festival concerts.

Available on Auditorium concert nights, the free transit service runs every 15 minutes from two hours prior to show time to 45 minutes after the end of each show.

HOP 2 Chautauqua is operated by VIA Mobility Services and funded by GO Boulder/City of Boulder, the Colorado Chautauqua Association and Colorado Music Festival. Enhance your summer concert experience and lower your carbon footprint by using the ultimate carpool!

enhancing the guest experience

The Chautauqua Auditorium received several upgrades to improve patron experience and comfort.

Sound and Lights

The Auditorium’s natural acoustics were fine tuned by our new audio vendor and high tech sound equipment. Subtle but significant, a new lighting rig enhanced performances through lighter and more energy efficient equipment.

Auditorium Cooling

Heated and cooled by Mother Nature, the Auditorium is equipped with sliding walls and hi-lo venting to naturally regulate the temperature and air flow throughout the venue. With increasingly warmer summer temperatures, the nature of the Auditorium, and its direct connection to the outside and lack of insulation or any thermal barrier, cooling the venue can be challenging in extreme heat. Last summer CCA installed two large evaporative coolers in the rear of the Auditorium in efforts to lower the temperature of the building during hot weather. The evaporative coolers were effective when running and lowered the interior temperature to a comfortable degree but the noise level associated with the large fans unfortunately preclude them from operating during many performances. Once the coolers are turned off, their residual positive effects dissipate rather quickly.

special thanks

Since 1989, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) has distributed funds from a 1/10 of 1% sales and use tax to cultural facilities throughout the seven-county Denver metropolitan area. The funds support cultural facilities whose primary purpose is to enlighten and entertain the public through the production, presentation, exhibition, advancement and preservation of art, music, theatre, dance, zoology, botany, natural history and cultural history.

The SCFD is a unique collaboration between rural, suburban and urban counties. The distribution budget for scientific and cultural organizations in the seven-county area is approximately $40 million annually. The Colorado Chautauqua Association is proud and grateful to be an SCFD Tier II organization. Thank you, citizens of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District! For more information, please visit www.scfd.org.
