P ortage County, named for the portagethat was necessary between theWisconsin and Fox River, sits at the

crossroads of the Wisconsin River Valley andthe Central Sands Region. Nestled in thecenter of the state, its landscape is as diverseas the rich cultural fabric that represents itscommunities.

Covering more than 800 square miles inCentral Wisconsin, Portage County has one city,17 townships and nine villages. Most of thecounty is rural offering year-round recreationalopportunities, dotted with small communitieslike Junction City, Almond, Rosholt, Nelsonville,Park Ridge, Whiting and Amherst Junction.

When Stevens Point was first founded in1858, the logging industry and trading postsdefined the location. With help from theWisconsin River, the railroad and rich soil, thearea continues to prosper. Today, the area has adiverse economy, home to headquarters forsuch companies as Delta Dental, SentryInsurance, Travel Guard and Herrschners.Established in 1894, the University ofWisconsin–Stevens Point has been a staple inthe community. The 400-acre campus includes

the Schmeekle Reserve, a 280-acre naturepreserve which includes a 24-acre lake. TheUniversity also houses the WisconsinConservation Hall of Fame, Museum of NaturalHistory, Carlsten Art Gallery, Planetarium, and

numerous cultural exhibits and performancesthroughout the year.

The mill isopen for special events throughout the year. This segment meanders through woods andfields. Four miles downstream in the Villageof Amherst, be sure to follow portage signsto avoid dam. Once you reach Amherst, stopfor a stroll and lunch in the downtowndistrict, complete with shops, restaurantsand an art gallery. Continue on theTomorrow River, suggested take-outs are atHighway T or Highway DD. Please note:during high water, submerged logs andswirling water can cause problems. Duringlow water, rocks and shallows will bepresent.

Jordan Park to Iverson Park (for intermediate skilled paddlers)

Park your car in Iverson Park off Highway66 in Stevens Point, then travel Highway 66east to Jordan Park. Jordan Park offerscamping as well as a Nature Center, that isopen in the summer, complete with specialprograms and staffed by a naturalist. Whenyou are ready, begin this route at the canoeramp on the south side of Highway 66 inJordan Park. The route will meander through

generally flat water, and is an excellent tripfor bird watchers in June and July. Because ofthe wooded landscapes on either side of theriver, it is an excellent way to view fall colorsin the area. Once you have reached IversonPark, enjoy a dip in the water near theswimming beach, or walk on a shortsegment on the Green Circle Trail that makesits way through the park. If you are hungry, try a local favorite, the Hilltop Pub & Grill, just east of Iverson Park.

Wisconsin River North (for intermediate skilled paddlers)

Take Highway HH West out of StevensPoint (approximately 4 miles) and you willfind a boat landing on the right side of theroad. Put in here and head back towardsStevens Point. As you proceed downstream, the islands to your left are surrounded bychannels. The adventurous paddler may wishto poke around the islands, spend some timefishing, bird watching or animal viewing. Allchannels headed south open into theStevens Point Flowage and back to the mainchannel. In the Flowage, go under the powerlines and take out at the boat landing nearthe swimming beach in Bukolt Park on theleft. Try following the Green Circle Trailsegment to Pfiffner Pioneer Park to walkalong the riverfront. Across the river, youwill see K.A.S.H. Playground at Mead Park.At the southern most tip of Pfiffner Park, you will encounter the Riverfront ArtsCenter. Downtown Stevens Point, just oneblock east offers a variety of specialty shops, dining, historical murals and otherattractions.
