TOM JOURNELL

Head Coach

Second Season

Now in his 27th year of coaching, Tom Journell is in his second season as Head Football Coach at UW-Stevens Point.

Journell spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Pointers, helping lead the team to a 19-9 record in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Under his tenure the Pointers defense finished amongst the leaders in the league in almost every statistical category.

In 2008, UWSP finished the season 9-2 overall and earned the program’s first playoff appearance since 2001. That year, Journell was honored by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association as the organization’s Assistant Coach of the Year. Prior to UWSP, Journell spent four seasons as the head coach at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. He compiled a 22-18 overall record in his four seasons with the Bluejays and ranks fifth all-time in Elmhurst history for career wins. In his final three seasons at Elmhurst, the Bluejays posted back-to-back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 25 years.

Previously, Journell spent 15 seasons at UW-River Falls, serving primarily as the defensive coordinator. He started with the Falcons in 1989 as the team’s secondary coach and after one season was promoted to defensive

coordinator. In 1995, he was again promoted to assistant head coach, a position he held for the next eight seasons. Journell helped lead the Falcons to NCAA Division III playoff appearances in both 1995 and 1996 and aided UW-River Falls to its last WIAC title in 1998. Previous to coaching at UW-River Falls, Journell spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Miami University (Ohio) where he was an assistant defensive secondary and linebackers coach. He studied the game from legendary coaches Dave Anderson, now executive director of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, and Terry Hoeppner, former Indiana University head coach. Journell attended NCAA Division III Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, graduating in 1987, where he participated on the football and baseball teams. A native of Eaton, Ohio, Journell and his wife Betsy have two sons, Mack (16) and Tate (10).

Aaron Vlcko

Offensive Coordinator

Third Season

Vlcko is in his third season on the staff at UWSP and will serve as the team’s offensive coordinator. Vlcko served as the defensive coordinator for the Pointers in 2012.

Vlcko began his coaching career as the running backs coach at Lindenwood University from 1994-96. He then spent eight seasons at Bemidji State from 1996-2003, serving first as the quarterbacks coach before taking over as the team’s offensive coordinator in 1998. In 2003, he returned to

his alma mater, Coe College, where he was the team’s quarterbacks and running backs coach as well as helped with special teams.

Following Coe, he spent five seasons at Truman State University from 2005-09. During this time he served as the team’s offensive coordinator for four seasons before being named interim head coach in 2009.

Vlcko graduated from Coe in 1994 with a bachelor of arts in economics and business administration. In 1996, he earned a master’s of business administration degree from Lindenwood, and in 1999 he earned a master of science in physical education degree from Bemidji State.

Vlcko and his wife, Michelle, have a daughter, Ashlyn, and a son, Brandon. He will also serve as an instructor in the School of Physical Education and Athletic Training (PEAT).

Drew Burton

Offensive Line/Recruiting Coordinator

fourth Season

After two seasons as the graduate assistant coach for the offensive line and run game coordinator, Burton accepted a full-time position as the team’s offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator in 2012 and is in his second year in that role.

Under Burton’s direction, the Pointers offense improved from 25.2 points per game in 2009 to 33.1 in 2010. UW-Stevens Point’s offense ranked second in the WIAC and 46th nationally in 2010. The offensive line also allowed just 15 sacks in 2010, second fewest in the league.

The Pointers running game has also flourished under Burton’s guidance, as UWSP’s rushing attack improved from 122.7 yards per game in 2009 to 174.7 in 2010 with 16 rushing touchdowns. The team’s yards per carry also increased from 3.8 to 4.6 despite not having a solidified starter at running back. Burton’s 2010 running game was the first to average over 170 yards per game in nearly a decade.

Burton has had several players go on to earn All-WIAC honors in two seasons including Grant Malmquist, who was selected to play in the Aztec Bowl, the premier Division III All-Star game.

Burton was a three-time letterwinner at NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University. He was a member of three national championship teams, including the 2003 team coached by Brian Kelly, current Notre Dame head coach. Burton also won a national title in 2006 under Chuck Martin. He played in 43 career games for the Lakers, including 17 starts.

Burton transferred to Grand Valley from the University of Idaho, where he redshirted in 2001 and made the travel squad in 2002.

Following his playing career at GVSU, Burton played in the Indoor Football League for the Muskegon Thunder for two seasons, playing offensive center, guard and defensive tackle.

A Moscow, Idaho, native, Burton a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Grand Valley in 2006 and a master’s degree in education from UW-Stevens Point in 2012. Burton is also certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, of which he is a member. Burton is currently working on a Master’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Idaho.

Burton and his wife, Tracy, reside in Stevens Point with their daughter, Kinley, born in April 2013.

Drew Vanderlin

Defensive Line/Strength & Conditioning

Second Season

Vanderlin is in his second season with the Pointers after a successful career at NCAA Division II Michigan Tech University. He was a four-time letterwinner with the Huskies, where he earned four all-conference awards as a defensive lineman.

In his final season, the team captain was a D2football.com Honorable Mention All-American, a D2/D3 Scouting Combine Second Team All-American and a Don Hansen Football Gazette Second Team Super Region Three honoree.

Vanderlin received an invite to the Green Bay Packers Rookie Orientation camp during the summer of 2012 as a defensive end. He was signed with the team in late October as a member of the practice squad. In May, 2013 he also participated in the Kansas City Chiefs Rookie Orientation camp as a defensive end.

Vanderlin, a Green Bay, Wis., native, resides in Plover. He will begin his first season with the Pointers, serving as the team’s defensive line coach.

In addition, Vanderlin is CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists) certified and will serve in a dual capacity and oversee strength and conditioning programs for all UWSP sports.

Vanderlin earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2011 with a minor in coaching at Michigan Tech.

Anthony Aker

Wide Receivers Coach

Third Season

Anthony Aker is in his third year as an assistant coach with the Pointers, his second working with the wide receivers, after completing a successful playing career with UWSP from 2008-10.

Coach Aker has coached two All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic

Conference players in tight end Mike Mullins (2011) and wide receiver Theo Maglio (2012). Maglio was a second team D3football.com All-West Region player and represented the United States in the Aztec Bowl.

Aker also coaches the Pointers’ punt/kickoff return unit, which produced all-conference kick returner Colton Zimmerman (2012).

He severs as the team’s academic coordinator and has helped UWSP produce over 60 WIAC scholar-athletes.

Scott Rice

Linebackers Coach

Second Season

Scott Rice is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Pointers football team.

In 2012, Rice helped develop a talented group of tight ends and running backs. In 2013, Rice moves to the defensive side of the ball, working with the linebackers.

Rice has an extensive football coaching background, including successful head coaching stops at McFarland and Watertown High Schools.

A native of McFarland, Wis., Rice earned his bachelor’s degree in communication education from the

University of Wisconsin Madison. Rice is currently working on his master’s degree in school counseling from Concordia University-Wisconsin.

Rice and his wife, Sandy, have two sons, Jacob and Joe, and reside in Stevens Point.

TJ Martin

Asst. Defensive Line Coach

Second Season

Martin is in his second season as an assistant coach for the UW-Stevens Point football program. In 2012, Martin was an assistant coach with the offensive line. In 2013, he made the transition to the defensive side of the ball to assist in coaching the defensive line.

Martin transferred from North Dakota State College of Science to UWSP for the 2010 and 2011 seasons as an offensive linemen, playing center and guard. A native of Cannon Falls, Minn., Martin played two years of football for NDSCS in Wahpeton, North Dakota, 2008

and 2009, making an appearance in the Graphic Edge Bowl in 2009. He graduated in May of 2010 with an Associate in Arts Degree in liberal arts. Martin will graduate in December 2013 with a degree in health promotion and wellness from UWSP with a minor in strength and conditioning.

Ben Chester

Assistant Coach

First Season

Ben Chester is in his first year as an assistant football coach with UW-Stevens Point.

The former quarterback played for the Ripon College Redhawks from 2008-10.

After two years at Ripon, Chester went on to play professionally for the La Crosse Spartans of the Indoor Football League under head coach Gilbert

Brown. After playing for the Spartans, he had two other stints in the IFL for the Green Bay Blizzard and Reading Express of Pennsylvania.

Chester completed his bachelor’s degree at UW-Green Bay in December of 2012 with a degree in business administration with a minor in psychology.

Upon graduation, he joined UW-Oshkosh as an NFL Liaison/Football Operations Assistant. Chester saw much success during his time at UW-O, helping former quarterback Nate Wara garner NFL attention, along with a tryout for the Green Bay Packers.

Chester, a Green Bay, Wis., native, resides in Stevens Point. Younger brother, Mitch Chester, plays on the defensive line for the Pointers.

Dave Krystowiak

Tight Ends/Running Backs Coach

First Season

David Krystowiak is in his first year with the UW-Stevens Point football team, working with the tight ends and running backs.

Previously, Krystowiak served as the inaugural football coach at Crean Lutheran High School in Irvine, Calif., for four seasons, leading the Saints to a winning record in only their third season of competition.

Prior to his time in California, Krystowiak served as the offensive line coach at Concordia University-Wisconsin. During that stint, the

Falcons enjoyed success winning an Illini-Badger Conference championship and qualifying for the NCAA division III playoffs in 2007. He led an offensive line that paved way for a top ten NCAA Division III rushing offense and coached five all-conference offensive linemen.

Krystowiak played collegiality at Winona State University, starting three season as an offensive guard. He was twice selected first-team all-conference, and was named to various all-American teams and selected team captain as a senior.

His teams qualified for the division II national playoffs twice and won three consecutive conference championships from 2003-05.

A Burlington, Wis., native, Krystowiak earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education at Winona State, and is currently working on his thesis to complete his Master’s in student personnel administration from CUW. He and his wife, Emily, moved back to Wisconsin in June with their one year old son, Elijah.

Tyler Umentum

Student Assistant

After a successful playing career with the Pointers, Tyler Umentum joins the Pointers coaching staff as an assistant offensive line coach.

Umentum, a native of Green Bay, Wis., played on the offensive line for the Pointers from 2009-12.

Umentum is pursuing a degree in physical education and health education from UW-Stevens Point, with an anticipated graduation date of May, 2014.

Brandon Matznick

Student Assistant

Brandon Matznick joins the UW-Stevens Point coaching staff as the specialist coach, working with both kickers and punters, after wrapping up a successful playing career with the Pointers.

Matznick was a four-time letterwinner with the Pointers, playing from 2009-2012. Matznick was named a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention All-Conference Punter for the 2012 season. In 2011, he contributed to a punt unit which finished ranked 12th in NCAA Division III football in net punting.

Matznick, a native of Kiel, Wis., is a health promotion and wellness major at UW-Stevens Point with an anticipated graduation date of December, 2013.

Ben Posick

Student Assistant

Posick is in his first year as a student assistant coach for the UW-Stevens Point football team. He will work with the wide receivers.

Posick is from Stoughton, Wis., where he played four years of high school football and baseball.
