Division III World Series - 1997 • 2006 • 2007 Five Straight WIAC Tournament Championships (2005-2009)

The University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point baseball team looks carry past season’s success right into the 2010 campaign.

The Pointers finished the 2009 season with a 31-16 overall record, the fourth time in five years with 30-plus wins and the 13th consecutive season they have reached 25 or more victories. Point com-piled a 15-9 WIAC record, tying UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater for first place. This was the first time since 2002 the Pointers headed the WIAC at the end of the season and the eighth time in school history. They carried their regular season momentum into the WIAC Tournament where they put together an 11-1 bashing of UW-Whitewater in the championship game to win their fifth consecutive WIAC Tournament crown. The Pointers also qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fifth consecutive year but could not make it past the regional round.

2009 All-WIAC performers Kyle Cummings, Kyle Berry and Jeff Zielke, along with Garett Bloom, Garrett Nix and Brandon Hemstead, wrapped up their careers in a Pointer uniform last season but the rest of the team stays very much intact. The team returns 24 of 30 letterwinners from last year’s squad including eight everyday position players including the WIAC’s Position Player of the Year.

With a majority of starters back from last season and valuable experience gained from the under-classmen, the Pointers come into the season ranked No. 18 nationally in D3baseball.com’s preseason poll. They are also favored to finish atop the WIAC standings according to league’s sports informa-tion directors.

The Pointers sat atop the WIAC in most major offensive categories, leading the conference in runs (344), home runs (49), total bases (707) hit by pitches (85) and tied for first in hits (463). The team also posted a .286 team batting average along with a .434 slugging percentage. In the pitching de-partment it was much of the same. Their team ERA (3.72), wins (31), saves (9), earned runs (167), strikeouts (372), doubles allowed (56) and opponent’s batting average (.239) all led the WIAC.

Here is a position-by-position preview of the returning Pointers for the 2010 season.

CATCHERSJunior Jordan Rennicke started 25 games behind the plate for the Pointers and batted .295 in 105 at-bats with 20 RBI’s. The Mequon native only had two errors in 215 chances, a .991 fielding percent-age. He also carries an eight game hitting streak into 2010. Junior Steven Considine also started 15 games behind the plate and the Pointers were 11-4 in games which he started.

INFIELDThe offense is led by first baseman Jeremy Richter, the WIAC’s Position Player of the Year and a First Team All- Midwest Region team selection. Along with his .333 average, Richter topped the WIAC in hits (61) and total bases (111) along with leading the team in doubles (17). He also belted nine home runs, drove in 42 runs and scored 40 runs. The senior also helped the Pointers in the outfield, starting in 15 games in all three positions.

The shortstop position was filled by Eric Fritz last season where he started all 47 games. The junior received All-WIAC honors landing on the First Team. The SPASH product tied for the WIAC lead in walks (30) and led the team in total plate appearances(237), at bats (185). Along with his .297 bat-ting average he swiped 17 bases without being caught. He will be key in the leadoff position and in the field this season.

Division III World Series - 1997 • 2006 • 2007 Five Straight WIAC Tournament Championships (2005-2009)

Junior Kevin Thomas is the leading candidate at the hot-corner where he started 37 games last season where he batted .284, driving in 33 RBI’s and scored 26 runs.

Competing for the second base position are transfers Travis Tuschen and Justin Jirschele. Tuschen, a junior transfer from MATC, was an all-conference selection last season and brings two WTCC championships to the Pointers. Jirschele, a sophomore transfer from UW-Oshkosh, started all 40 games at shortstop for the Titans where he batted .280 with 29 runs, nine doubles and 27 RBI’s.

OUTFIELDIn his first season Cody Koback started 31 games in center field. The sophomore gath-ered All-WIAC honorable mention honors while tying for the WIAC led in triples with four and also batted .313 along with stealing 10 bases.

The left-handed hitting Brad Archambeau was a valuable asset as he started 31 games in right field and 14 in center. The senior provided much of the Pointers scoring from last season as he had a team-high 44 runs and 43 RBI’s.

Joining him in the outfield is 2008 All-WIAC first team selection Jared Surman in left. Last season, the junior belted 11 home runs, tops in the WIAC along with 33 runs and 33 RBI’s.

DESIGNATED HITTERSam Spurney was penciled in as the designated hitter much of last year where he started 30 times. The senior from Manitowoc batted .282 and tallied eight home runs and 37 RBI’s in 2009.

PITCHINGPoint’s pitching returns five of their eight letterwinners from last year’s team. Leading the way is All-WIAC First team and Second Team All-Midwest Region honoree Scott Williams. The junior held opposing batters to a .161 average and posted a 2.62 ERA in 62.1 innings of work. The Baraboo native is looking to start the 2010 season the way he finished the 2009 campaign where he allowed zero earned runs in nine innings in the NCAA Regionals against University of St. Thomas.

Helping Williams on the mound last season Joel Delorit who logged 59.2 innings and collected six wins while striking out 70 with a 3.02 ERA. The junior left-hander hopes to build on his strong summer ball performance where he was named to the North-woods League All-Star team, posting a 2.39 ERA in 67.2 innings.

Along with seeing time in the field, Koback will also be helping the Pointers on the mound. Last season he made eight appearances, collecting two wins and holding op-ponents to a 2.55 ERA.

Other returners who look to contribute for the Pointers on the mound this season in-clude Mitch Kouba, Tyler Lorenz, Ryan Povlick, Max Mittelstaedt and Eric Van Beck.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

A finalist for the WIAC’s Pitcher of the Year in 2009, Scott Williams will lead

HEAD COACH PAT BLOOMEntering his seventh season as head baseball coach at UW-Stevens Point, Pat Bloom has put together a very impressive coaching resume. He has compiled a 192-94 record (.671 winning percent) in his time at Point and is the school’s all-time winningest coach along with leading the program to back-to-back Division World Series appearances in 2006 & 2007 and five straight WIAC Tournament titles (2005-2009).

Since taking the helm in 2004, Bloom has transformed the Pointers into a WIAC powerhouse and a respected program nationwide. The Pointers continue to improve under his watch, as the program continues to add to its collection of accolades. The accomplishments under Bloom include the best finish in school history, as the 2007 team finished third at the World Series with a 34-17 overall record, and the 2006 squad finished fifth in the country with a 35-18 record. With a 31-16 record last season, the Pointers put together their fourth 30-plus win season in the past five years. The team’s World Series runs in 2006 and 2007 featured plenty of memorable moments as the Pointers won 13 games when facing elimination, including three straight in the 2007 regional to reach the World Series. The Pointers won 10 times with their season on the line in 2006 as Bloom was named the Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2007. Bloom was also named the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year in 2008.

Bloom has also captured the WIAC Coach of the Year honor in 2005, as the Pointers set the single-season wins record with a 38-11 record before losing the regional title game to eventual national champion UW-White-water, which suffered five of its seven losses to the Pointers. Along with capturing the WIAC Coach of the Year, Bloom was also named Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Collegiate Coach of the Year following the season.

Bloom, a 2001 graduate of UW-Stevens Point, is a former pitcher and assistant coach for the Pointers. He has a psychology degree from UW-Stevens Point and has received a Master’s Degree in Sports Sci-ences with emphases in Sport Behavior and Performance and Sport Organization from Miami University (Ohio).

A Tomah native, Bloom played two seasons at Carthage College before completing his final two sea-sons at UW-Stevens Point. A relief pitcher, he was a member of two conference championship teams at Carthage and one Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title team at UW-Stevens Point. Bloom also played on Carthage’s 1997 Division III World Series team that defeated UW-Stevens Point in the second round.

Following his playing career, Bloom spent one season as the Pointers’ pitching coach as UW-Stevens Point won the WIAC tournament and advanced to the Division III tournament.

Prior to returning to UW-Stevens Point, Bloom served as a graduate assistant in the Miami athletic de-partment, working closely with the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and teaching two classes designed for freshman student-athletes. Bloom was also in charge of community service and leadership programming for Miami athletics.

Bloom is in charge of one of the nation’s winningest Division III programs over the past 13 years. The Pointers have posted a 404-176-1 record (.715 winning pct.), including four WIAC titles and 10 NCAA tournament appearances. In addition to his coaching duties, Bloom teaches in the university’s department of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics.

On July 1, 1997, the face of intercollegiate athletics in Wisconsin changed dramatically. At that time, the nine members of the former Wisconsin State Univer-sity Conference (WSUC) and the Wisconsin Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) joined together to form a single conference -- The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The WIAC member institutions are:UW-Eau Claire UW-Stevens PointUW-La Crosse UW-StoutUW-Oshkosh UW-SuperiorUW-Platteville UW-WhitewaterUW-River Falls

Each of the nine institutions is a part of the Univer-sity of Wisconsin System, and each competes at the NCAA Division III level. For 26 years, the WSUC and WWIAC operated as separate men’s and women’s con-ferences. In 1996, the University of Wisconsin System determined that the two conferences should be merged into a single conference under the direction of one conference office and commissioner.

• WIAC student-athletes compete without the benefit of athletic aid or scholarships. They compete for the love of their game.• Over 5,000 student-athletes participate in the WIAC each year.• The nine institutions of the WIAC have a total stu-dent enrollment of approximately 70,000.• Over 300,000 WIAC alumni currently reside within the state of Wisconsin.• In the last 10 years, 39 NCAA national championship team titles have been crowned in the WIAC.• The WIAC has captured more NCAA national championships than any other Division III confer-ence in history. Championships have been won in 15 different sports, including: baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s indoor track, women’s indoor track, men’s out-door track, women’s outdoor track, women’s softball, women’s volleyball and women’s gymnastics (NCGA). It is no wonder the WIAC is commonly referred to as the “Conference of Champions.”

Dear Friends,

Whether it is baseball or football, ice hockey or basketball, every team needs support from its extended family to thrive and prosper in competitive intercollegiate athletics. Those of us as-sociated with Pointer Baseball consider ourselves very fortunate to have had-and to continue to have-such loyal and generous support from our surrounding baseball family.

As the saying goes, ‘tradition never graduates’. While this may be true, our competitors have a short memory and sustained championship performance requires hard work, discipline and a tremendous amount of sacrifice. But it also requires top-notch facilities, equipment and technol-ogy. With your help, we would like to continue to make improvements so that our amenities can better align with our success-and we can continue to build champions and add to our tradition of excellence.

With each new year, our alumni, parents, and friends continue to step up to the plate and deliver the clutch contributions that allow our program to achieve championship-caliber performance. As we prepare our young men for the next chapter of their lives, let’s help to make their experi-ence as a Pointer as memorable and rewarding as it has been for many others. The money raised through your membership will go exclusively toward improving our program-from our facilities to our daily functioning. From all of us in Pointer Baseball, thank you for taking the time to consider our request. We hope to see you at the ballpark this spring.

Go Dawgs!
