Tournament appearances.

Wearing The “C”... In the 16-year history of the Gustavus women’s hockey program, 30 players have earned the honor of being a captain. This year, three more young women are added to that list. All first-year captains, senior Melissa Doyle and juniors Courtney Boucher and Carolyn Draayer will accept the role during the 2013-14 campaign.

Home Grown... Of the 27 players on this year’s roster, 25 are natives of Minnesota. The only players to reside outside of the Gopher State are Courtney Bethune, who hails from Fort Frances, Ontario, and Allie Lewis, who is a native of Kearney, Nebraska.

Fountain Of Youth... After losing 11 letterwinners from last year’s squad, Gustavus will look to its youth to provide much-needed production this season. The Gusties return just 12 letterwinners from a year ago compared to a class of 12 first-year players and two transfers in junior forward Krystal Baumann, who transferred from Minnesota State University, Mankato and sophomore goalie Amanda Koep, who transferred from the University of North Dakota over the semester break. Gustavus also welcomes back senior goaltender Marah Sobczak after she was away from the team recovering from a serious car accident last year.

Gusties In The Polls... Gustavus is ranked eighth in the latest USCHO.com Division III Women’s Hockey Poll, which was released Monday. This week marks the 69th consecutive time that the Gusties have been ranked in the USCHO.com poll. The last time Gustavus fell outside of the top ten was the week of Jan. 11th, 2010. It is the second straight week that the Gusties claim the eighth position in the poll. The top ten remained largely unchanged in this week’s poll, with only one change taking place between No. 3 Elmira and No. 4 Norwich, who traded positions.

About The Pointers... After beginning the year ranked outside of the top ten, UW-Stevens Point has climbed through the rankings to reach the No. 5 spot in this week’s USCHO.com Poll, thanks in large part to its 12-2-1 record. Prior to last weekend’s loss to St. Norbert, the Pointers had rattled off six straight wins, including a sweep of MIAC opponent St. Thomas.

A big reason for UW-Stevens Point’s success this season has been its defense. The Pointers are currently tied for ninth in all of Division III in goals allowed per game (1.67) and have one of the top goalies in the country. With a record of 9-2-1 in net, Janna Beilke-Skoug has seen the bulk of the minutes between the pipes for the Pointers. Beilke-Skoug ranks 10th in the nation in goals against average (1.58), fifth in save percentage (.945), seventh in winning percentage (.792), and is tied for second in shutouts (3).

Offensively, UW-Stevens Point is led by a pair of players with double-figure points on the season. Cassandra Salmen has registered eight goals and six assists for 14 points (t-4th/WIAC), while Allie Tanzer has notched seven goals and five assists for 12 points (t-8th/WIAC).

Unfamiliar Territory... With a 3-0 loss to UW-River Falls on Friday, Dec. 13th, Gustavus was shutout on its home ice for the first time since March 19th, 2010, when the Gusties fell at the hands of Amherst 4-0 in the Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. However, the last time Gustavus was shutout on its home ice in the regular season was on Feb. 3rd, 2007, when the Gusties fell to St. Thomas 1-0.

The Week After... In the 16-year history of Gustavus women’s hockey, the Gusties have amassed a record of 21-6-1 in the week following the Holiday break, including a perfect 5-0-0 against UW-Stevens Point. Under Head Coach Mike Carroll, Gustavus has compiled a record of 20-4-1, including all five wins against the Pointers.

Fresh Faces... With all of the gifts exchanged over the Holiday break, the Gusties were not neglected in the spirit of the season, receiving a pair of fresh faces in transfers Amanda Koep and Katy Snyder. Koep, a sophomore goaltender, comes to Gustavus from the University of North Dakota, while Snyder, a first-year defender, makes Gustavus her home after a semester at St. Catherine University.

On Point... In four career games against UW-Stevens Point, junior forward Carolyn Draayer has scored four goals, including the game-winner in a 1-0 win on Saturday, Jan. 12th last season in St. Peter. Draayer has scored a goal in each contest, and will look to keep her goal-scoring streak alive this weekend against the Pointers.

After winning the MIAC Playoff title for the 10th straight year, Gustavus advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in the 13 years. A 2-1 victory over UW-River Falls in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament earned Gustavus a trip to the NCAA Semifinals for the fourth straight season. At the Division III Frozen Four hosted in Superior, Wis., Gustavus fell to Elmira College 4-3 in overtime in the semifinals before dropping the third place game to Plattsburgh State by the score of 4-0.

In addition to coaching 30 players who have earned All-Conference honors 55 times, he has coached five MIAC Players-of-the-Year in Sarah Garrison, Andrea Peterson, Stefanie Ubl, Allie Schwab, Lindsey Hjelm. Carroll has also worked with 13 players who have earned AHCA All-America distinction 21 times and two American Hockey Coaches Association Players-of-the-Year, including four-time MIAC Player-of-the-Year and four-time All-American Andrea Peterson.

Prior to coming to Gustavus, Carroll served as the head boys’ hockey coach at Mankato West High School from 1991 to 1999. Carroll’s college coaching resume included a stint as head men’s hockey coach at Fergus Falls Community College from 1986 to 1987 as well as a season as the assistant men’s coach at the University of St. Thomas in 1983.
