Season Preview

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Following its second national championship game appearance in as many years, head coach Chris Brooks and the UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey team looks to continue the program’s success in 2015-16.

Last season, the Pointers advanced to the national title game, finishing as the national runner-up, falling to Trinity (Conn.) 5-2. With a record of 23-7-1, the Pointers compiled the most wins by a UWSP team since 1999-2000. On its way to the title game, UWSP defeated Hamline and Amherst in the NCAA Tournament after the Pointers won their first conference title since 1999-2000 to earn an at-large berth into the national tournament.

With a mix of veterans and newcomers this season, many players will step into new roles with the departure of seven seniors, including three All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) selections, from last season’s team.

“Last season we graduated seven seniors, but this season we have a large senior class coming back,” said head coach Chris Brooks. “We also added 11 new faces, which is exciting.”

Gone from last season is a group of seven decorated seniors. Defenseman Kyle Brodie was twice named All-WIAC and was a CCM First Team All-American in 2014. Also departing was forward Garrett Ladd, a two-time All-WIAC honoree, who was also the 2014 WIAC Player of the Year and a CCM First Team All-American.

Defenseman Kevin Gibson and goaltender Brandon Jaeger also graduated finishing impressive careers for the Pointers. Gibson was named All-WIAC twice and was named WIAC Player of the Year and CCM First Team All-American in 2015. Goalie Brandon Jaeger was a two-time First Team All-WIAC selection and set program records in wins (62) and saves (2,037).

Despite the losses, UWSP returns 18 letterwinners from last season, including its top-two point producers in All-WIAC selections Joe Kalisz and Kyle Sharkey. UW-Stevens Point also returns All-WIAC selection Alex Brooks, who finished second in the WIAC for points as a defenseman (26). Those three are part of a nine-man senior class this year for the Pointers. UWSP veterans also account for nearly almost two-thirds of goals scored this past season, as well as 63 percent of point production.

This season, the Pointers will be led by second-year captain Evan Dixon along with three assistants in Sharkey, Brooks and Alex Kromm.

“[Our captains] are a good mix of personalities since they all lead in different ways,” Brooks said about his team’s leadership. “I’m confident that they will do a good job of echoing and carrying my voice. Last year I actually gave a voice to our outgoing seniors because, to me, it seems more important for them to choose captains, because our new guys don’t really know them.”

The Pointers have also added 11 new players to the group of returners. UWSP adds four transfers this season, three of which have played at the Division I level. Joining the Pointers on the back end will be Nathan Harris, who played at Lake Superior State for two seasons prior to coming to Stevens Point. Harris is one of five blueliners on this season’s roster, which includes fellow newcomer Ryan Bittner, who will join his older brother Mark, a junior defenseman.

“One thing you’re going to see of all of five of these defensemen is their compete level,” Brooks said of his new defensive group. “They work hard and are a little bit raw, but their compete factor is extremely high.”

Four forwards will join the high-scoring offense, which topped the WIAC in goals, averaging 4.32 a game this past season. UWSP brings in two transfers in junior Jono Davis, who played in a Frozen Four this past season skating for the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and Joey Haydock, who returns to his hometown of Stevens Point after spending two seasons at conference foe UW-Stout. Forwards Tanner Karty and BJ Duffin, who played in competitive junior hockey leagues, will also bring a skillful presence to a group of veteran skaters.

Joining sophomore backstop Max Milosek is a pair of goaltenders with experience in sophomore PJ Bridges who comes to Stevens Point after a season at Western Michigan University, alongside freshman Jesse Gordichuk, who posed a .925 save percentage in three seasons of junior hockey.

“PJ Bridges was one of the best goaltenders in the country two years ago,” said Brooks. “He was the NAHL goaltender of the year [in 2014] and he’s looking to compete for the position. Our depth isn’t as top heavy this season but our depth is good in all positions and it will be extremely competitive.”

“The guys we brought in cannot replace what we lost and that’s why we need guys to fill in by committee,” said Brooks. “Our depth is really good in all positions and it will be competitive this season and our depth has to close that gap so that everything is tighter. We need those kids to take the next step in their careers.”

Despite being picked to win the WIAC for the second consecutive season, Brooks isn’t focused on the end result. Instead, he is focused on the process of putting his team in the best position to be successful.

“Our goal is always to take steps and get better every day” said Brooks about the upcoming season. “A big part of our success will be how well we manage and teach and how guys pick it up through the first two weeks. They have done a good job so far.”

This season, the Pointers will face off against a strong non-conference schedule, which includes NCHA favorite and four-time national champion St. Norbert. UWSP will also travel to Michigan, where they will play the United States U-18 National Team, along with 2015 national semifinalist Adrian. A strong strength of schedule will help UWSP make a case for a postseason berth without an automatic NCAA Tournament bid for the WIAC.

After two highly successful seasons, Brooks believes that there is an expectation in his program to reach the ultimate goal.

“Our expectation when we step on the ice is to win,” Brooks said. “The process takes care of itself and our expectation doesn’t change and that is to play in the last game of the year. With 11 new faces, the road might be tougher but the expectation doesn’t change. It’s a different challenge but I’m up for it and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure we are playing in that last game.”

Chris brooks

Head Coach

fifth Season

In four seasons at UW-Stevens Point, Chris Brooks has helped re-establish the Pointers’ program as one of the best in the country through national runner-up finishes in each of the last two seasons. Under his direction, the Pointers have compiled a 74-35-8 (.667) overall record, while playing in one of the most competitive conferences in the country.

In 2013-14, Brooks led UW-Stevens Point to a national runner-up finish in its first appearance in the NCAA Division III postseason in 16 years. The berth in the Frozen Four was the first for the Pointers since 1998. The Pointers recorded a 22-6-2 record and the 22 wins were the most by a UWSP team since 1999-2000. Brooks was also named a finalist for the Edward Jeremiah Award, given to the Division III Coach of the Year in 2013-14. The Pointers finished the season ranked second in the country and were ranked in both the USCHO.com and D3hockey.com the entire season and were in the top five of both polls from Dec. 2. on. UW-Stevens Point was one of three teams to finish in the top 10 in the nation in both team offense (third) and team defense (seventh).

Brooks then led UW-Stevens Point back to the Frozen Four and a second-straight

runner-up finish in 2014-15. The 2014-15 team went 23-7-1 overall and won its first regular season conference championship since 1999-2000, the program’s 10th overall. The back-to-back 20-win seasons were the program’s first since 1991-92 and 1992-93. The Pointers were again ranked in both national polls throughout the 2014-15 season, including being in the D3hockey.com top five for 14 of 16 weeks. UWSP concluded the season ranked second in the country for the second season in a row.

In his four years at UW-Stevens Point, Brooks has coached five All-Americans (Kevin Gibson - 2015, Joe Kalisz, 2015, Garrett Ladd- 2014, Kyle Brodie- 2014 and Kyle Heck- 2012). He has also coached 26 All-WIAC players, including the first two WIAC Players of the Year (Gibson - 2015, Ladd- 2014), and back-to-back Elite 89 Award winner Brandon Jaeger (2014-15).

In Brooks’ first season as head coach, he led the Pointers to the Peters Cup Championship Game for the first time in over 10 years.

In his three seasons as coach at the professional level, he led the team to an 87-86 overall record and playoff appearances in two of his three seasons. In his

first season (2008-09), he led the team to a franchise-record 35 wins and its first playoff series victory. The team was also named the CHL’s Franchise of the Year under Brooks’ direction. That same year, Brooks was the runner-up for the league’s Coach of the Year award.

Prior to his time at Rio Grande Valley, the Stratford, Ontario, native spent nine years at Western Michigan University, six as an assistant coach and his last three as the associate head coach. His roles at WMU included coordinating the Broncos’ recruiting efforts, preparing scouting reports, evaluating game video, and organizing the Bronco Summer Hockey Schools. He also managed the practice plan and team travel. In addition, Brooks served as an evaluator for USA Hockey at Michigan Select Festivals in 1999.

Brooks began his career as an assistant coach at Western and was promoted to associate head coach in 2006. WMU’s recruiting classes from 2002-08 produced eight NHL draft picks. In addition to those players, many others went on to sign free agent deals with NHL and minor league clubs.

As a player, Brooks lettered four seasons as a player at WMU (1992-96) and finished as the eighth-leading scorer in school history, compiling 57 goals and 127 assists for 184 points. A playmaker with excellent on-ice vision, Brooks led WMU in assists four straight seasons and twice captured the team scoring title (1992-93, 1994-95). He was a member of two NCAA

tournament teams (1993-94, 1995-96) and was the recipient of the CCHA’s Rookie of the Year award in 1993. He also received Honorable Mention CCHA All-Academic status.

Brooks went on to play professionally with stops in Amarillo (WPHL), Mobile (ECHL), Springfield (AHL), and Kalamazoo (UHL). He led the WPHL in scoring and assists during the 1996-97 season, posting 110 points (45-65-110) in 64 games, earning league Most Valuable Player status. After an 82-point campaign with Mobile, he returned to Amarillo and again led the team in scoring (48-57-105) and was the league leader in goals. He also started his coaching career that season, serving as a player/coach, while also being named team MVP and appearing in his second WPHL All-Star Game.

Brooks received a bachelor’s degree in communication in 1996 and a master’s degree in communication with an emphasis in coaching in 2007. He resides in Plover with his wife Jeannine, daughter Bryar (15) and son, Barrett (13).

Brooks is heavily involved with the local youth hockey association, serving on their coaches committee. In addition, he also speaks at USA Hockey seminars and runs the Chris Brooks Elite Hockey Camp during the summer in Stevens Point.
