The UC San Diego fencing team is looking to great success and a bright future as Heidi Runyan enters her sixth season at the head coaching position for the 2009-10 season. After two years as an UCSD assistant coach, she brings over 26 years of fencing experience and several years of USFA coaching to the team. Her goals are to continue the Triton’s formidable performance in the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California along with producing strong
results at the NCAA regional and national levels.
During her competitive career, Heidi was a nationally ranked senior fencer in both women’s sabre and foil.
She fenced in college at Cal State Los Angeles - where she met her husband and future assistant, Josh - and she also represented the United States in 2007 World Veterans’ Fencing Championships.

As a Freshman in 2007-08: Placed 18th in the men’s foil at the 2008 National Collegiate Fencing Championships after scoring nine victories and 71 touches... earned an automatic berth to the championships after being crowned foil champion at NCAA West Regional... won gold in the

Year in ReviewThe UC San Diego fencing team continued the program’s improve-ment in 2008-09, winning overall conference titles for both the men
and women and sending fi ve athletes to the 2009 NCAA National Fencing Cham-pionships, where Benjamin Dorn and Pilar Alicea earned All-American status. The Tritons also captured fi ve-of-six squad titles in conference, three individual conference championships and had nine All-Confer-ence performers.
Opening the season at the Collegiate Open, the Tritons captured 13 of 24 med-als, including three-of-six possible golds, with Alicea in women’s foil, Michael Fong in men’s foil, and Samantha Rojales in wom-en’s saber each topping their fi eld. UCSD continued that momentum against confer-ence opponents USC, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, and Arizona State, scoring overall victories against all four schools. Fresh-men Fong and Armin Chan were joined in their undefeated performances by Alicea and foil captain Zitin Kachru.
During their fi rst home competition, the Tri-tons again continued their solid conference competition, dominating both Cal Tech and UC Irvine on the men’s and women’s side. Each individual squad of weapons in foil, epee, and saber went undefeated. Alicea became the only undefeated foilist after defeating previously undefeated UCI oppo-nents, while Anne Schnecker scored a win over conference leader Vanessa Burns of Cal Tech as part of her 6-0 day in women’s saber.
After winning championships with their re-spective weapons at the Bladerunner Tour-nament, Dorn and Alicea each went un-defeated again during UCSD’s fi nal home meet of the year against UC Irvine and Cal Tech. The men’s foil team captured a lead-ing 17 victories to just one defeat on the day, while women’s epee scored eight wins and only one loss. Also going undefeated were Brooks Eggerth, Bryan Kim, Nick Mc-Guiness, Jonathon Ott, and Fong for the men and Amy Bianchini, Alicia Trigeiro, and Casey Gilcrist for the women.
Head coach Heidi Runyan led her team through the conclusion of their regular sea-son at UC Irvine, again facing USC, UCLA,
UC Santa Barbara, and Arizona State, with both the men’s and women’s teams fi nish-ing off their fi nal regular season meet un-defeated to win overall conference cham-pionships. The women avenged an earlier loss to ASU, 15-12, and held the tiebreaker of 248-241 in season bouts won to claim a conference title previously in doubt. The Triton men completed their year with a 12-0 conference record, sweeping all squads titles with undefeated records in foil and saber and a 10-2 season record in epee. Women’s foil also went undefeated to claim the squad title, while women’s saber was a squad winner with their 11-1 season record, and women’s epee fi nished second after a 10-2 season record. Fong in men’s foil, Ali-cea in women’s foil, and Kim in men’s saber won individual season championships, with Fong and Alicea posting 36-0 records and Kim going 34-2 on the year. Chan (men’s foil), McGuinness (men’s epee), Kalman Chodakiewitz (men’s saber), Kachru (wom-en’s foil), Bianchini (women’s epee), and Schnecker (women’s saber) were also All-Conference performers for UC San Diego.
At the NCAA West Regionals, UCSD re-cord four second-place fi nishes and two third-place performances as Fong and Dorn in men’s foil, Alicea and Razan Faraj in women’s foil, and Ott and Kim in men’s saber fi nished second and third, respec-tively. Trigeiro was also a second-place performer for the women’s saber squad. Based on regular season and champion-ship results, Dorn, Fong, Ott, Alicea, and Trigeiro were fi ve of the 145 athletes se-lected to the 2009 National Collegiate Fencing Championships, hosted by Penn State University.
Dorn and Alicea became All-Americans at the National Championships, with Dorn fi nishing the event with team-bests of 13 wins, 85 touches, and a ninth-place fi nish in men’s foil. Alicea placed 12th with 11 wins and 80 total touches in women’s foil. Fong wrapped up his impressive fi rst year at UCSD with three wins, 60 touches, and a 24th place fi nish in men’s foil, while Ott fi nished 24th in men’s saber with two wins and 44 touches. Joining Alicea in repre-senting the Triton women’s squad, Trigeiro placed 24th in women’s saber with one win and 48 touches.

This is UCSD Athletics...
• Triton teams have captured 29 National Championships while 37 teams have fi nished as National Runners-Up. 44 others have achieved National Third Place honors. All told, UCSD has won a total of 171 national, regional, and conference championships.
• Individually, 130 Triton student-athletes have captured National Championships and a remarkable 990 student-athletes have been named to All-America teams.
• UCSD student-athletes have excelled academically as well, earning 23 prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships and 140 Academic All-America selections. Consistently, over 55 percent of the student-athletes earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, placing them on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
• In 2008, UCSD was ranked fi rst in Division II and 20th overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association Power Rankings, which are based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength, and athletic prowess of the university.
• In 2008-09, UCSD posted a Seventh Place Finish out of over 300 schools in the Learfi eld Sports Director’s Cup, an award emblematic of the best overall athletics department in the country. Since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2000, UCSD has placed in the top seven programs in the country on eight different occasions and fi nished second overall twice.
• Beginning in 2005-06, UCSD has won the last four California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner’s Cup titles, an award symbolizing the best overall athletics department in the CCAA.

Earl Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego athletics department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his
guidance, the 23-sport program has made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001.
Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top six programs in the country on seven different occasions. In two of those fi nishes, UCSD was the national runner up. UC San Diego also won four straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioners Cup titles in 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. In 2008, UC San Diego was ranked No. 1 in Division II and No. 20 overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess.
Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 2003-07. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and has severed on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and Committee for Women’s Athletics. He has published several articles in Athletic Management and was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue. In 2007 he was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the West Region by the NACDA.
A 1972 graduate of East S t roudsbu rg Un i ve rs i t y, Edwards earned a bachelor’s
degree in Physical Education. He then went on to receive his masters in Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In addition to working as athletics director at East Stroudsburg University and UC San Diego, he has athletics administration experience at the University of Massachusetts, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, and Drexel University.

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletics department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.
The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance. Mamula brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and fi rst class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country.
The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists.
The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program, where some of the athletic training students fulfi ll their clinical experience. Additionally, the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation.
From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the fi eld of competition in no time.

The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and
around the San Diego area.
In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years.
Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to fi nd out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from
a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents.
In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005.
Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefi t the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.
