Location: Nestled on the bluffs above the Pacific Ocean just north of downtown San Diego, UC San Diego is known as one of the most attractive and liveable campuses in the country. Just over 27,000 students are spread across UCSD’s 1,200 wooded acres. With near perfect weather year-round and boundless recreational activities to choose from, San Diego truly lives up to its motto of “America’s Finest City.”

This Is UC San Diego...

Competition: As well as competing as a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, widely considered the premiere Division II conference in the country, UC San Diego competes against many of the top NCAA Division I programs in the nation.

Facilities: UC San Diego’s Track and Field Complex is known as one of the top facilities in the country. The facility includes a nine lane track surface in Triton Stadium, a world-renowned throwing fa-cility, spacious locker rooms, and a weight room. Large grass fields and a eucalyptus forest with trails surround the stadium providing endless possibilities for training. Near the track is the state-of-the-art, multi-million dollar RIMAC athletic event center that features a 5,000 seat arena and a 12,000 square foot weight room.

TONY SALERNOMEN’S HEAD COACH THROWING EVENTS

Darcy Ahner enters her sixth season as head coach of the UC San Diego women’s track and field program, having guided the Triton women to unprecedented levels of success in her five years at the helm.

The Triton women have placed in the top five in the NCAA Championships three out of the last six years. 2009 proved to be a banner year for UCSD on the women’s side as Ahner led the Tritons to several meet victories, including a fifth consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association title. Two Tritons went on to win individual national titles in her events, paving the way for an unprecedented third place team finish at the NCAA Championships and a final ranking of No. 2 in the U.S. Track and Field Coaches As-sociation National Power Rankings.

Ahner, who also serves as an assistant with the men’s program, brings 22 years of college coaching experience to UCSD, including 13 seasons on the La Jolla campus. She served as associate head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams in 2006 and 2007 and was an assistant coach for both squads from 2000-05. Known as one of the nation’s most talented and versatile collegiate track and field coaches, Ahner’s successes have spanned all three NCAA Divisions.

Ahner joined the staff at UC San Diego in 2000 after nine years as an assistant coach at the Division I level. She spent seven seasons at her alma mater, the University of New Mexico, coaching the jumps and multi-events. While at New Mexico, Ahner’s athletes dominated the high jump in the Western Athletic Conference, as four different athletes won four consecutive WAC Championships. Seven athletes achieved individual WAC titles in seven years and four broke school records. During her tenure, seven athletes qualified for the D-I National Championships, producing one All-American.

After her stint at the University of New Mexico, Ahner spent two seasons coaching jumps, hurdles and multi-events at Northern Arizona University, where four of her athletes were NCAA Division I qualifiers, including an All-American in the heptathlon. Five athletes achieved Big Sky Conference individual titles, while three set new school records.

Ahner’s first 13 years at UCSD have seen her athletes rewrite the Triton record books in the men’s and women’s jumps, hurdles and multi-events as 10 out of the 12 records have been set by athletes during her coaching tenure. Her athletes have won a remark-able 45 CCAA individual conference titles and 25 have earned All-American honors. Under Ahner’s guidance, Tritons have won four individual NCAA National Champion-ships, and three were second place runners up, including Champions, Whitney Johnson in 2008 (triple jump), Christine Merrill in 2009 (400 hurdles) and Linda Rainwater in 2008 (heptathlon) and 2009 (high jump). Ahner has been selected as both the CCAA Coach of the Year and the NCAA West Region Women’s Coach of the Year twice and the Tri-tons were named a USTFCCCA Academic All-American Team in 2009-2012.

A Level II USA Track and Field certified coach, Ahner is also a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and serves as the strength and conditioning coach for the

Triton track and field program. She was a coach for the 2008 U.S. Paralympic Team in Beijing, coaching two athletes to gold medals and new world records in the high jump and the pentathlon, while three others claimed silver medals.

As an athlete, Ahner competed in the heptathlon while at New Mexico, setting school records in the high jump, javelin and heptathlon. She was honored as the Western Athletic Conference Most Valuable Athlete in 1989 and was the conference heptathlon champion in 1988 and 1989. Ahner was a three-time NCAA Division I Championships qualifier, as well as a World Championships trials competitor in 1990. She graduated from New Mexico in 1990 with a degree in psychology and education.

Tony Salerno begins his 14th season as the head coach of the men’s track and field program at UC San Diego, while also serving as an assistant coach for the women’s program in the throwing events. Salerno served as head coach for both the men’s and women’s squads for twelve years prior.

Salerno brings over 30 years of college coaching experience to UCSD. Since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2001, both the men’s and women’s squads have been ranked among the top programs in the nation under his guidance.

UCSD athletes have earned a remarkable 61 NCAA Division II All-American honors during his tenure as head coach. Since Salerno arrived on the La Jolla Campus, the evolution of both the men’s and women’s teams at the Division II level has been nothing short of dramatic, with the men registering second place finishes at the CCAA Championships in 2006, 2009 and again in 2010. The men’s program has consistently ranked among the top 25 programs in the nation in the U.S. Track and Cross Country Coaches Association National Power Rankings and was named a USTFCCCA Academic All-American Team last season.

Salerno’s final season as head coach of the women’s program in 2007 proved to be a banner year for the Tritons as they claimed their third straight CCAA Championship. The season was capped by an eighth place finish at the NCAA Championships, which was the program’s highest national championship placing since moving to the Division II level at the time. The Triton women ranked either first or second in the UST-FCCAA National Power rankings every year from 2003 to 2009.

The successes of the Triton track and field programs have not gone unnoticed by his coaching peers. Sal-erno was voted the CCAA Women’s Coach of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2007, as well the West Region Coach of the Year in 1993, 2005, 2006 and 2007. He was voted National Coach of the Year in 2005.

A specialist in coaching the throwing events, Salerno has produced 43 NCAA All-Americans, as well as seven individual NCAA Champions in throws and the decathlon during his time at UC San Diego. In 2009, junior Danielle Thu won the national title in the hammer throw with a toss of 198’8” -- a mark that ranks fifth all-time in Division II -- and sophomore Nick Howe won the national cham-pionship in both 2010 and 2011. Over the span of his 34 years of coaching at the high school, community college, Division I, II and III levels, Salerno has produced numerous record setters and champions.

Salerno began his tenure at UC San Diego in 1988 as an assistant coach be-fore taking on head coaching responsibilities for both the men’s and women’s teams in 1993. From 1996 to 1999, Salerno coached at the Division I level at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., before returning to La Jolla in 2000 as part of UCSD’s move to the Division II level the following year. He has served as the president of the Cal/Nevada Coaches Association since December 2008.

A San Diego native, Salerno graduated from Mount Miguel High School and then earned his B.A. in Kinesi-ology from San Diego State University in 1984.

Mike Kuoppamaki begins his fourth year as pole vault coach for the UC San Diego track and field program in 2013. Kuoppamaki adds a wealth of experi-ence to the Triton staff, having coached in the college ranks since 1999 at UC Davis and then Idaho State.

He has worked with two individual na-tional champions, as well as several CCAA Champions and National All-Americans. In addition, he has sent two athletes to the Olympic trials.

In his first year with the program in 2010, he coached Donna LeFe-ver, who set the school record in the pole vault with an impressive mark of 12’6”. LeFever went on to finish sixth (12’2.75”) at the NCAA Championships in Charlotte, N.C., becoming the first Triton to earn All-American accolades in the vault on the women’s side.

Kuoppamaki graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor degree in Neuro Physiology and Behavior in 1998. He placed fourth at the NCAA National Championships in the decathlon while competing for the Aggies and then went on to place 13th at the U.S. Nationals in 2003. Kuoppamaki received his Doctorates of Chiropractic in 2008 and now works in San Diego.

Mick Gieskes enters his 16th year coach-ing at UCSD between the track and field and cross country programs in 2013. A long time member of the San Diego track and field community, Gieskes’ athletes have rewritten the Triton record books in nearly every running event in his tenure as sprint coach at UC San Diego.

Kelly Fogarty became the first UCSD sprinter to earn All-America accolades at the Division II level after attain-ing the honor in both the 100 and 200 in Charlotte, N.C. and again in the 2011 NCAA’s in Stanislaus Calif. Kelly holds school records in both events 100m (11.52), 200m (23.55). Jacqueline “Boo” Rose became the second individual All-American in 2012 in Pueblo, Colo. in the 400m and holds the school record in the 400m (53.30).

In recent years the UCSD sprints squad has established new school re-cords in nearly every event, including both men’s relays in 2006, as well as the 4x100 (45.81) and 4x400 (3:42.97) relays on the women’s side in 2012. In the past four years, UCSD relay teams have earned All-America status on six occasions.

In total, Gieskes has coached 12 individual NCAA national qualifiers, nine of which were at the D-II level, and two while UCSD was a member of Division III. In addition, nine relay teams have qualified for Nationals under his watch.

Gieskes’ many coaching honors include his selection as the 1999 Division III West Region Coach of the Year in cross country. In 1997, he coached the Triton women’s squad to victory at the CCAA Championships (the first UCSD team in any sport to win a CCAA title). Along with his team accomplishments, Gieskes has coached three individual qualifiers for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships and two Tritons achieved All-America status, including the 1999 individual runner-up.

The son of a UCSD Professor Emeritus, Gieskes graduated locally from Torrey Pines High School and nearby UC Riverside, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Literature.

Nathan Garcia begins his seventh year coaching the distance events for the UC San Diego track and field program. Garcia has also served as the head coach for the UCSD men’s and wom-en’s cross country programs since the fall of 2007. Garcia found immediate success as a coach on the La Jolla campus. He coached five track and field athletes to All-American honors the last six seasons.

His first years as head coach of the cross country programs proved no less successful, with both squads reaching the NCAA Division II National Championships in his first season, marking just the sec-ond time UCSD accomplished that feat at the D-II level. Seniors Emily McGregor and Diane Dunn earned All-America honors af-ter top 25 finishes at the 2007 national meet, while Garcia guided another student-athlete to All-American recognition after qualifying for the National Championships as a freshman in 2008. In 2011 under Garcia’s guidance, Jesse Morrill won the CCAA Champion-ships in the steeplechase and qualified for the NCAA Champion-ships. Morrill owns the school record in the event (9:03.19).

Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from UCSD in 2000, graduating cum laude, and holds a Level 1 certification from USATF.

Garcia was a four-year athlete in both track and cross country while attending UCSD from 1996 to 2000. During his time as a Triton, he earned numerous athletic and academic honors, includ-ing Verizon All-Academic District VIII and CCAA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2000-01. He was also honored by UCSD on National Student-Athlete Day that same year.
