COACHING STAFF

Kevin Ring enters his sixth season as head coach in 2011 after leading UCSD to another successful season in 2010. The Tritons were ranked in the top 15 nationally through the entire year and collected

six conference wins in their campaign, including season sweeps over UCLA and Pepperdine.

The 2009 season proved to be the most successful in program history. The Tritons won a Division II best 13 matches and nearly qualified for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) playoffs, being eliminated during the final weekend of conference play. UCSD defeated several ranked teams, including a win over UCLA for the second consecutive season. The Tritons finished the year ranked No. 11 in the country and Ring was named MPSF Coach of the Year.

While maintaining a high level of success on the court and in the classroom, Ring and his UCSD squads have kept a clear focus on giving back to the community. For the past two years, the Tritons have held regular volleyball clinics with the local Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization in San Diego.

Before being elevated to the head coach position on June 15, 2005, Ring spent the previous nine years as an assistant for the UCSD men’s squad. He served as the top assistant for Duncan McFarland in 1997. and 1998, Jon Stevenson in 1999 and for Ron Larsen between 2000 and 2005. Ring helped guide the Tritons to a NCAA Division III National Championship in 2000.

In addition to his duties with UCSD men’s volleyball, Ring was an adjunct faculty member in the Chemistry Department at the University of San Diego. He also served as an assistant coach on the women’s volleyball team for the Toreros in 2004-05.

A former high school player at Sheldon High School in Eugene, Oregon, Ring got his start at UCSD serving as the men’s volleyball team manager from 1989-91 before playing on the team for three seasons. Prior to graduating from UCSD in 1996, Ring served as the full-time Team Manager for the USA Men’s National Team from 1991-1993. He continued to work for the National Team as a Technical Advisor on a part-time basis through 1996. He accompanied the National Team to both the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

Ring earned two degrees from UCSD, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 1996, followed by a master’s degree in chemistry in 1998.

UCSD men’s volleyball competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The league is comprised of 12 schools, 11 of which are Division I institutions. Since it’s creation in 1992, the MPSF has fielded an NCAA men’s volleyball champion in 15 of the past 19 years. The most recent national champions include Stanford (2010), UC Irvine (2007), UCLA (2006), Pepperdine (2005) and BYU (2004).

COACHING STAFF

Newell Assistant Coach • First Season • UC San Diego ‘98Ryan

Warren Assistant Coach • Fifth Season • UC San Diego ‘92Paul

Burton Assistant Coach • Fourth Season • Stanford ‘03Tristan

Ryan Newell, most recently an assistant coach with the Cal women’s volleyball team, was named UC San Diego’s top assistant in September of 2010. With 2011 being his first season with the Tritons, Newell is assisting head coach Kevin Ring with many different aspects of the program, including video analysis, recruiting, in-match strategy and summer camps.

In the 2009-10 school year, Newell helped the Golden Bears in many aspects, including setting up practice drills, scouting opponents’ offenses, maintain-ing analysis reports, editing and preparing video and tracking in-match scenarios. Cal ended up with a mark of 21-11 overall and went 11-7. in the Pac-10. The Golden Bears’ 2010 playoff run ended in the Gainesville Regional Championship with a loss to No. 1-ranked Penn State.

While working with Cal, Newell also held the head coaching position with the NorCal Volleyball Club’s competitive Girls 17. team. In that role, he developed training programs and team philosophies while also designing a video scouting system for match analysis.

Previously, Newell served as a player, captain and president of the Chico State club team while pursuing his undergraduate degree from 2005 to 2008. In 2007. as a junior, he earned all-league honorable mention accolades from the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League. A year later, he received All-NCCVL Second Team honors and was named the Chico State Sport Clubs Men’s Athlete of the Year Runner-Up.

Through his four years at Chico State, he also served as assistant coach for the Wildcats’ women’s volleyball squad under head coach Cody Hein.

Since 2005, Newell has also spent time as a lead coach for the Gold Medal Squared volleyball camps held in Midway, Utah.

At the conclusion of his time at Chico State in 2008, Newell received a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Paul Warren is entering his fifth season as an assistant coach for UCSD. His primary duty on Kevin Ring’s staff is charting the Triton offense.

Warren has brought a wealth of coaching experience to the Tritons as he previously served as the head coach at America High School in Fremont, Calif. While at AHS he gradually built the program into a competitive entity as the team made its first league playoff berth in his final season at the helm, 2006. He has also served as the club volleyball coach for the City Beach Bay Club from 2003 to 2005. Before his time at America High School, he held the head coach position at Sheridan High School in Englewood, Colo., where he also turned around a girls’ volleyball program. He led the team to its first winning season in over a decade in just his second season at the helm.

Warren also serves as a volunteer assistant for the University of San Diego women’s volleyball team.

Warren was a member of the Tritons men’s volleyball team in 1991-92. During his collegiate career he played the swing hitter and opposite positions, while training as a setter.

Warren earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from UCSD in 1992. He resides in Oceanside, Calif., with his wife Amber and their five children.

Tristan Burton is entering his fourth season as an assistant coach at UCSD.

Burton specializes in the application of physics and mathematics to the game of volleyball. At the 2009 AVCA Spring Conference, Burton presented a new statistical approach to analyze a volleyball match and also participated in the “Statistics: The Key to Good Coaching Decisions” session, on a panel that included Dr. Carl McGown and Dr. Gil Fellingham. He has published his statistics system in an article entitled, “A Comprehensive Statistics System for Volleyball Match Analysis” in the August/September 2009 edition of the AVCA’s “Coaching Volleyball”, and has also made a number of scientific contributions to the Gold Medal Squared coaching theory.

Burton began coaching high school and juniors club volleyball in Northern California while in graduate school. Upon completion of his degree, Burton took a position as an Assistant Pro-fessor at the U.S. Naval Academy and continued to coach at the collegiate and club levels. Under his direction, the 2006 Navy Men’s Club Team finished in the gold bracket at the NIRSA Division I Sport Club Championship. Later that year, he was the assistant coach for the Morgan State women’s team, helping it to the finals of the MEAC Volleyball Championship.

At the juniors level, Burton has coached for TimeOut VBC in Baltimore, Quake City and City Beach volleyball clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area and most recently with Coast VBC in San Diego. His 2003 City Beach 18-Green and 2005 TimeOut 15-Black teams each earned regional bids to the Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships.

Burton earned his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1996, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1997. and 2003. In addition to coaching volleyball, Burton participates in endurance athletic events and has completed four Ironman distance triathlons and five marathons. He lives in the University Heights neighborhood of San Diego with his wife Melissa and son Atley.

Earl W. Edwards - Director of Athletics

Earl W. Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March of 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego Athletics Department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his guidance, the 23-sport program made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001. Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top seven programs in the country on eight different occasions in the annual Director’s Cup standings. In two of those finishes, UCSD was the national runner-up. UC San Diego has also won the last five California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner’s Cup titles, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. Additionally, UCSD has been ranked No. 1 in Division II (and in the top 20 overall) in the last two National Collegiate Scouting Association Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures

student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess.

Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 2003-07. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors and has served on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and the Committee for Women’s Athletics. He has published several articles in Athletic Management and was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue. In 2007, he was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the West Region by the NACDA.

A 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Edwards earned a bachelor’s degree in

physical education. He then went on to receive his master’s in sports administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In addition to working as athletics director at East Stroudsburg University and UC San Diego, he has athletics administration experience at the University of Massachusetts, UC Davis, the University of Michigan and Drexel University.

RIMAC Arena

RIMAC Arena is the cornerstone of UC San Diego’s sports facilities. This nearly 200,000 square foot facility is located just south of the 12-acre North Campus Recreation Area Field on the northwest corner of the campus. Opened in January 1995, RIMAC is a multi-purpose facility with the most advanced forms of quality control, state-of-the-art equipment and a strong staff commitment to customer service. Every room in RIMAC is climate controlled and many of the spaces feature an abundance of natural lighting. RIMAC houses the offices of the Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreation and Sports Facilities departments, while also featuring a variety of recreational, educational and meeting spaces.

RIMAC Arena is a multi-use facility capable of accommodating a wide variety of activities ranging from large spectator events including ceremonies and concerts to athletic competitions and tournaments. The 44,000 square foot floor is also capable of accommodating large floor exhibits. The arena floor is spring loaded, employing the use of Robbins Bio-Cushion I and is curtain divisible for multi-sport use in basketball (total of five courts), volleyball, etc. The arena is furnished with 10 retractable glass basketball backboards, and floor plates and sleeves for volleyball and badminton. Employing the use of telescopic bleachers and floor seats, RIMAC Arena may accommodate up to 5,000 people.

RIMAC is home to the UCSD men and women’s basketball teams, as well as the Triton volleyball squads. Over 50 home athletic events are contested in RIMAC every year and, with enthusiastic support from both the campus and surrounding communities, the Tritons truly enjoy a home court advantage. Both the basketball and volleyball teams utilize the main court for practice and games, while the auxiliary courts, which are located on the third floor, are used for training or recreational purposes.

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego Athletics Department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.

The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored by Rudy Thomas, UCSD’s Director of Strength and Conditioning. Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country.

The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists.

The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs, two graduate assistant ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students. The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program, where some of the athletic training students fulfill their clinical experience. Additionally, the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation.

From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of

options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the field of competition in no time.

The UC San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area.

In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that fosters positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years.

Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to find out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents.

In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005.

Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

San Diego - America’s Finest CityThe UCSD campus is located in La Jolla, Calif., just minutes north of America’s eighth largest city, San Diego.

Spanish for ‘the jewel’, La Jolla is one of San Diego’s first neighborhoods to be settled. The city of La Jolla has spectacular beaches and park areas that are popular for great diving, swimming, surfing, hiking, romantic sunset strolls and family fun. La Jolla’s village area boasts a beautiful Mediterranean charm and a cool Southern Californian vibe, and rolls out the red carpet when it comes to it’s fine dining, theatre, cultural activities, boutique shopping, art galleries and fine lodging establishments. It’s no wonder why La Jolla’s Prospect Street was dubbed ‘San Diego’s Rodeo Drive’.

Named “America’s Finest City” for its hospitality, beauty and ideal cli-mate, San Diego is located at the southern tip of California, just north of Mexico. The residents of San Diego County are so physically active that Sports Illustrated magazine once called it “Sportstown, U.S.A.” San Diego’s 70 miles of beaches are a haven for swimmers, surfers, divers, boaters and sunbathers alike.

The city of San Diego is a major commercial business center with more than 2.6 million residents and a varied economy based in ag-riculture, manufacturing, aerospace, technology, electronics, aircraft, ship-building, scientific research and tourism. The city is one of the largest biotech centers in the U.S.
