PRACTICAL ADVICES
OIL & BRAKESThese need to be checked regularlyfor your own good, and done socarefully. If you are about to set offon a long trip and some work isabout due, best get it done first.

TYRESThese need to be checked regularly.Remember that their pressures alsovary, whether you ride solo, if youhave a passenger, or if the ‘bike isloaded up.
LAGGAGEThe best solution is to fill your pan-niers with care, making sure they arewell balanced, and not with thingsthat are going to be needed duringthe trip. These last, which wouldinclude, for example, your waterpro-of jacket, or another layer of clo-thing, can maybe be carried in yourtop box, which although not everyo-ne will want to do, is practical andvery useful. Any other luggage mustbe well fastened to the ‘bike, mustnever stick out beyond the limits ofthe ‘bike itself, and must not causeyou any problems during the ride.

BAGAGLILa soluzione migliore è riempire concura e in maniera equilibrata leborse laterali, con indumenti chenon dovranno servire durante ilviaggio. Questi ultimi, ad esempiotuta da pioggia, indumenti piùpesanti ed altro, potrebbero trovareposto nel bauletto posteriore, chenon a tutti piace ma è pratico e uti-lissimo. Qualsiasi altro tipo di baga-glio, deve essere sempre ben anco-rato alla moto, non deve mai spor-gere più del dovuto dal mezzo, enon deve arrecare nessun tipo difastidio durante la guida.

<< Il 2007 è stato decretato dallaComunità Europea come l’anno deitratturi, della transumanza. Durante levarie escursioni a volte con amici, avolte da solo, decido di lasciare a casa ilKTM300 2T molto più leggero ed utileper le zone inaccessibili e decido diusare la mia Cagiva Elefanti i.e. 900. Partenza CELANO;*Celano(Caput Marsorum) antico cen-tro della Marsica, un tempo Contea,oltre al favoloso Castello Medioevalecon all’interno un museo permanente,molte sono le bellezze artistiche davisitare: centro storico, chiese, conven-ti e, in località Paduli, un bellissimo edimportante Museo Palafitticolo.
Particolarmente rinomate sono le Gole,bellissimo Canyon naturale condivisoterritorialmente con Aielli.Pietra S. Berardo ex “Bivio della Morte”.Ore 9,00, armato di tutto punto, dallevettovaglie ai ricambi per la moto -addirittura portavo anche una frizionedi ricambio, oltre alle camere d’aria, alleleve smontagomme in acciaio, allemaglie per la catena, bombolette gon-fia e ripara, materiale bicomponenteper eventuali rotture di carter., lacciacceleratore, olio motore etc. Direte ma a che serve tutto questo?Risposta: serve per poter riparare even-tuali rotture, forature ed imprevisti varie rientrare a casa.

Of particu-lar note, there are the Gole, beautifulnatural canyons in the shared territo-ries with Aielli.Leaving from Celano: San BerardoRock, and ex “Junction of Death”(“Bivio della Morte”). Ricordo che non viaggia-vamo su strada asfaltatadove nel raggio di pochiKm puoi trovare un mec-canico, un gommista oun mezzo di soccorso. Inmezzo ai monti qualchedecina di km di distanzasono un’eternità, e aspingere una moto ci sipossono passare delleore, se non si è addirittu-ra costretti a lasciare ilmezzo. Come dicevano imiei nonni “cappa espesa non mai pesa”, epartenza. Il tratturo èpercorribile fin dai primitratti anche se ormairidotto ad una stradasterrata ad una sola car-reggiata; dopo pochiattimi già arriviamo nelterritorio di Aielli; anticoborgo arroccato a quota1030 mt., detto anche “ilbalcone della Marsica”per il suo stupendo bel-vedere. nua fino sotto il Paese di Cerchiocosteggiando quasi la SS TiburtinaValeria fino ad attraversarla proprioall’incrocio Cerchio Collarmele Pescina.All’incrocio, di fronte ci appare unastrada sterrata: eccolo ancora lui l’anti-co tratturo; se ne percorre qualche chi-lometro fino a Collarmele. Si costeggiail Paese nella parte Ovest e si sbucavicino un campo di calcio confinantequasi con il Cimitero Comunale.Proprio all’altezza del cimitero, a destra,si prende un’enorme sterrata, pocodopo si deve girare a sinistra passandoper un metanodotto in salita. Si valicae si riprende il Tratturo costeggiandotutta la Strada Statale che daCollarmele porta a Forca Caruso per poidiscendere verso GORIANO SICOLI. Iltragitto fino a Goriano è bellissimo,spesso si attraversa la Statale per poiributtarsi sullo sterrato. Goriano Sicoliè un antico borgo medioevale di 616abitanti della provincia dell'Aquila: faparte della Comunità montanaSirentina. È situato nella parte sud dellaValle Subequana a 756 m. sul livello delmare.… bellissima la torre campanariache si erge con imponenza, quasi stes-se sorvegliando il territorio.… Sorgeinsieme alla chiesa parrocchiale suquello che un tempo era l'anticocastello feudo di Rinaldo Conte diCelano...

From Aielli,we continue on to pass below thetown of Cerchio, keeping almost paral-lel to the SS Tiburtina Valeria until wecross it at the Cerchio, Collarmele,Pescina crossroads. At this crossroads,straight ahead there the dirt road isagain, the ancient Tratturo, which wefollow for a few miles until we arrive atCollarmele. We follow around the westside of the town and end up near to afootball pitch that is near to theMunicipal Cemetery. Right here, as wereach the cemetery, we take an enor-mous dirt road on the right, and justafter we have to turn left, passingalong a gas pipeline, heading up. Aswe come out, we again pick up theTratturo that follows all along themain road from Collarmele to ForcaCaruso, where we then descendtowards GORIANO SICOLI. The last sec-tion to Goriano is lovely, where weoften cross the main road and keepheading off again on the dirtroad.Goriano Sicoli, ancient Medievalsettlement of 616 inhabitants in theProvince of L’Aquila, is a part of theSirente Mountain Community. It issituated on the south side of theSubequana Valley, at 756 m above sealevel, with the beautiful, bell tower thatrises with its imposing presence as if itis looking out over the territory, toge-

A Goriano, il Tratturopassa in mezzo al centroabitato per poi salireun’altura a 840 mt. peraffacciarsi sulla VallePeligna. Allungando losguardo si vede Raiano,Pratola Peligna, Sulmonae le montagne dellaMaiella. Si comincia ascendere per via asfaltoin quanto il Tratturo inparte non esiste più, edin parte è stato assorbitodalle attuali stradeProvinciali e Statali.Scendendo ancora siarriva a RAIANO, dentroil quale il tratturo passa-va per dirigersi versoPRATOLA PELIGNA. Quigirava leggermente adestra evitando l’abitato,e, rasentando il monteCosimo, si dirigeva versoSulmona. Prima diSulmona si attraversa ilFiume Sagittario all’al-tezza di Loc. Acquasanta.Lambendo il centrourbano di Sulmonacomincio a costeggiare ilFiume Gizio.
Chiaramente noi in motoabbiamo cercato di farequanto più strada sterra-ta possibile del Tratturo,ma quasi tutta la stradache da Raiano porta aPETTORANO SUL GIZIO,anche se è Tratturo, ètutta asfaltata.Una volta a Pettoranosul Gizio, bellissimo edantico borgo, si cominciaa salire per Rocca Piaattraverso l’antica stradaNapoleonica. Arrivati aLocalità Valle Rea, preci-samente fra PietraCantagalla e terraSpaccata a quota mt.861, si deve girare a sini-stra per arrivare a RoccaPia - 1158 mt -, BorgoAntichissimo per secolivotato alla pastorizia.

Looking out in thedistance we can seeRaiano, Pratola Peliga,Sulmona and peaks ofthe Maiella mountain.We start to descendalong the tarred road,because in parts theTratturo doesn’t reallyexist any more, and inparts it has been used asthe present provincialand state roads.Descending still, we arri-ve at RAIANO, throughwhich the Tratturo pas-ses, to head out towardsPRATOLA PELIGNA. Herewe turn gently to theright to avoid the hou-ses, and passing belowMount Cosimo, we headtowards Sulmona.
Before Sulmona thoughwe cross the SagittarioRiver at the Locality ofAcquasanta. Headingpast the urban centre ofSulmona, we start to fol-low the Gizio River.Clearly we are on the‘bike here to try and useas much of the dirtroads of the Tratturo aspossible, but almost allof the route that goesfrom Raiano toPETTORANO SUL GIZIO istarmacked, even thoughit remains the Tratturo.As we arrive at thebeautiful and ancientsettlement of Pettoranosul Gizio, we start toascend towards RoccaPia along the ancientNapoleonic road. Thenarriving in the Locality ofValle Rea, betweenPietra Cantagalla andTerra Spaccata at 861 mabove sea level, we haveto turn left to reachRocca Pia. At 1,158 mabove sea level RoccaPia is another veryancient settlement that

A ROCCA PIA la strada centrale chedivide il Borgo era ed è l’attuale trattu-ro; salendo per esso si arriva a valicarel’ALTOPIANO DELLE CINQUE MIGLIA aquota 1250 mt circa. Giunti sull’alto-piano la vista è meravigliosa, una pia-nura infinita di erba e strade sterrate,un profumo diverso da tutti i pianid’Abruzzo; forse sarà l’altezza o la miasuggestione. Appena arrivato al valicomi fermo subito a sinistra vicino ad unbellissimo ed antico fontanile (loc.detta appunto Fontanella), sorseggioun’acqua freschissima ottima compa-gna di un panino con prosciutto e for-maggio acquistato proprio a Rocca Pia.Durante lo spuntino mi accompagna-no le pecore di un gregge, il cui pasto-re “purtroppo” era Macedone (il pur-troppo non in forma razziale, ma per lamancata possibilità di saperne di piùsul tratturo), che gradivano moltocome me la freschezza e la purezzadell’acqua. Riprendo il cammino, pro-cedo verso Rivisondoli; invece dellastrada asfaltata, percorro la sterratache la fiancheggia. Tutta la stradaasfaltata SS dell’Appennino Abruzzeseed Appuro Sannitica era ed è l’AnticoTratturo.

At ROCCA PIA, The centralroad that divides the town was andstill is the Tratturo, which ascendsuntil we arrive to cross the five-milehigh plain (ALTOPIANO DELLE CINQUEMIGLIA), at an altitude of about 1,250m above sea level. On reaching thehigh plain, the view is marvellous: aninfinite plain of grass and dirt roads,with a smell that is different from allof the plains of Abruzzo; but maybethis is the altitude or just suggestion.At the pass, we can stop immediatelyon the left next to a lovely ancientfountain (in the Locality known asFontanella), from which there rises thevery fresh water that makes an excel-lent companion for a ham and cheeseroll bought in Rocca Pia itself. Duringthis break, I am accompanied by aflock of sheep, and unfortunately theirshepherd is Macedonian (I say “unfor-tunately” not from a racial point ofview, but because I lost the chance oflearning more about the Tratturo). Thesheep also appear to appreciate thefreshness and purity of the water.Taking to the road again, we headtowards Rivisondoli; instead of takingthe tarred road, we can use the dirtroad that runs alongside it. A metà, nei pressi di unapiccola curva in Loc.Capannola girando adestra arriviamo dopoqualche centinaia dimetri ad una chiesa(madonna del Casale delsecolo XIV), anticamentetutt’intorno sorgeva unantico Borgo, nato per latransumanza, oggi ètotalmente distrutto.Riprendendo il camminoper Rivisondoli ed attra-versandolo nella parteSud, l’antico tratturoscompare e riappare solodopo ROCCARASO, preci-samente a sud diPIETRANSIERI, a 1333 mt. Da Pietransieri il Tratturoè visibilissimo, ma conmoto bicilindriche non èindicato mettere i tasselli- tutto questo scoperto,dopo aver incrinato duecostole dovute ad unacaduta esplorativa pertrovare un passaggio aRoccacinquemiglia, èassolutamente da evitare.Comunque baipassandoRoccacinquemiglia si
può prendere la S.P.84per poi immettersi sullacomunale Pietransieri-Ateleta. Cento metriprima della strada vici-nale Aia dei Colli vedia-mo il tracciato delTratturo che ci porterà aS. Pietro Avellana per 7-8Km circa. Da S. PietroAvellana verso Sud-Est, Madonna del Casale

Sannitica, was, and stillis, the ancient Tratturo.Continuing, near to ashort curve in theLocality of Capannola, afew hundred yards afterturning right, we arriveat a church (theMadonna del Casalefrom the XIV century),where in ancient times
there was an old settle-ment that was there dueto the transumanza (themain sheep drives), butwhich today is totallydestroyed. Taking up ourroute to Rivisondoli andcrossing its southernsection, the ancientTratturo disappears, onlyto reappear later, after
ROCCARASO, due southof PIETRANSIERI, at1,333 m above sea level.From Pietransieri, theTratturo becomes muchmore visible, but with atwo-cylinder ‘bike, it isnot advisable to put on“tasselli” – this dirt roadwas definitely to beavoided after I had crac-ked two ribs because ofa fall while exploring apossible route toRoccacinquemigl ia .Anyway, by-passingRoccacinquemiglia we

precisamente presso lo scalo ferrovia-rio, si riprende il Tratturo che da quisarà tutto segnalato fino in Puglia.Attenzione: segnalato sì, ma bisognaavere lo sguardo lontano e montano..Lontano, per cercare di «agganciare»con lo sguardo i cartelli, montano, nelsenso di praticità nel presumereall’epoca quale tracciato potesse essereidoneo al transito di armenti.

Dopo aver abbandonato provvisoria-mente il progetto tratturo a causa dellacaduta a Roccacinquemiglia, Io eVincenzo decidiamo di completarlo ininverno, precisamente mella metà diNovembre con moto più idonee al tipodi terreno incontrato nella prima parte.Viste le condizioni meteorologiche sfa-vorevoli, partiamo direttamente dadove l’avevamo «lasciato» d’estate, cioéda S. PIETRO AVELLANA, coadiuvati daun camioncino che ci ha scaricati sulposto per poi riprenderci ad Apricena,meta finale della nostraMotoTransumanza. Scaricate le moto,dopo aver ripassato le cartine con gliamici Fabio e Massimo (la nostra assi-stenza col Furgone), si parte direzionesud. Dopo un breve pezzo asfaltato,all’altezza della stazione ferroviaria di S.Pietro Avellana, ecco che il Tratturocomincia a rivelarsi non più come unastriscia di prato largo dai 100/120 mt.ma sotto forma di boschi di faggio,abete bianco, cerro e zone prato, il pen-siero nasce spontaneo: con tutta que-sta Flora probabilmente ci starannoosservando gli animali che vivono inqueste zone (cinghiali, lepri, tassi, don-nole, faine, volpi, poiane, gufi, barba-gianni, civette, colombacce, scoiattoli,ghiri, passeracei). Dopo qualche Km ilTratturo diventa un sentiero e solograzie a moto idonee riusciamo a fare

Tratturo project because of my fall atRoccacinquemiglia, my friendVincenzo and I decided to completethis trip in winter; half-way throughNovember to be precise, with ‘bikesmore suited to the type of terrain metin my first half of the trip. Due to therelatively unfavourable meteorologicalconditions, we took up the trip exactlywhere we had “left” it in summer, thatis to say from SAN PIETRO AVELLANA,accompanied by a van that had drop-ped us off there before picking us upagain in Apricena, the final point ofour MotoTransumanza. After off-loa-ding the ‘bikes, and after having goneover the maps with our friends Fabioand Massimo (our helpers with thevan), we head off towards the south.After a short tarmacked section, andjust by the San Pietro Avellana railway
station, we see that the Tratturo startsto reveal itself as no longer a grassystrip about 100-120 yards wide, but inthe form of beech, white fir and oakwoods with grassy areas, and thethought immediately springs to mind:with all this vegetation, we are proba-bly being watched by the animals thatlive in this area (wild boar, hares, bad-gers, weasels, martins, foxes, buzzard,owls, pigeons, squirrels, dormice andsparrows).After a few miles, the Tratturo beco-

il primo pezzo, a fatica riuscendo amantenere la traccia. Dopo 5-6 Km siattraversa la Strada che va da Cerretoa Vastogirardi, ci si ributta nello ster-rato e si prosegue prima verso sud poiverso Est in direzione Pietrabbon-dante. Prima di PIETRABBONDANTEc’è la località Cerreto, *Si narra che decenni addietro i Localifacevano ore ed ore di affettuosaconversazione, di incontri commo-venti, con i pastori di passaggio,augurandosi di rivedersi ancora alnuovo anno, “a Dio piacendo“ - comeessi dicevano. Le raccomandazioniche gli anziani davano erano semprele stesse: cioè che passando e ripas-sando con i grandi greggi, badasseroa non farli sconfinare nell'erboso elibero terreno del Cimitero. Il tratturofiancheggiava, infatti, il Cimitero cheCerreto aveva ottenuto a fine delsecolo precedente per il coraggiosoatteggiamento di Pagliarone.Qui abbiamo dovuto prima deviare acausa di una frana lungo il tragitto,un po' dopo l’indicazione di ReFajone, poi riprendere un pezzod’asfalto.*Re Fajone è un gigantesco faggioche si trova nel territorio diVastogirardi, nella località denomina-ta Valle S. Maria, che può a ragioneconsiderarsi il faggio fra i faggi.

The recommenda-tion that the old people gave towhoever passed and repassed withthe great flocks was always thesame: to be careful not to allow thesheep into the grassy and open areaof the cemetery. Indeed, the Tratturoactually passes by the cemetery thatCerreto obtained at the end of thelast century through the bravery ofPagliarone. Although “ReFajone” – which doesn’tactually mean “the KingBeech”, but just “theBeech” in the local ver-nacular –is protected, itis not in particularlygood health; indeed, it isnot really thriving at all.As a beech, its dimen-sions are extraordinarythough: 25 m high and6.4 m in circumference.It is known to be a num-ber of centuries old, withthe estimate being ataround 500 years.After Vastogirardi wecontinue on forPietrabbondante. Pietrabbondante issituated at 1,027 mabove sea level, with itshouses built against the
naked rocks, overlookedby the imposing “Morge”that can be seen in per-fect contrast against thesky, overshadowed bythe verdant and woodydome of MountCaraceno and protectedby the statue of thefearless Sannita warriorthat dominates thesquare. All around there is afeast of uncontamina-ted and silent Nature,mountain beyondmountain, immense val-leys, villages here andthere, and in summerthe fields overflow withmulti-coloured flowers.*Within these moun-tains stories are told ofthe past ages of thegreat brigands and ofhidden treasures. Bifernina inContrada “De Fensa”.Le origini di LUCITO, fondata daiLongobardi, risalgono al VI secolo,infatti lapidi trovate sul versante destrodei fiume Biferno, tra Larino e RoccaCalenda, confermano questa tesi. Leprime case del paese sorsero in unquadrivio a uguali distanze dai centripiù importanti della regione, Boiano,Trivento, Larino, Gerione. Lucito èsituato in una valle piena di uliveti chesi estendono fino alle sponde del fiumeBiferno; nella parte settentrionale è cir-condato da colline piene di alberi dafrutta e di querceti. Il territorio è attra-versato da piccoli torrenti che sfocianonel Biferno e nel tratturo "Celano-Foggia", che si trova in buono stato diconservazione. Ora il paese si presenta

Once refilled with petrol, off we go.After 8 miles or so we start to getglimpses of Salcito, a village with 620inhabitants (the Salcitani) at 678 mabove sea level. From Salcito, alwaysheading east/south-east, we followfor Lucito, where we arrive in the early
evening and find lodgings in a hotelon the SS Bifernina in Contrada “DeFensa”. The origins of Lucito, whichwas founded by the Longobardi, arisein the VI century, and stone inscrip-tions found on the right bank of theBiferno River, between Larino andRocca Calenda, have confirmed thistheory. The first houses of the villagewere built in a square equidistantfrom the most important centres ofthe Region: Boiano, Trivento, Larinoand Gerione. LUCITO is situated in avalley full of olive groves that extendright down to the edge of the BifernoRiver. The southern part is surroundedby hills that are full of fruit and oaktrees. The territory is crossed by smallrivers that empty out into the Bifernoand along the “Celano-Foggia”Tratturo, which is here well maintai-ned. Now the village is completely dif-ferent, with most of the houses outbeyond of the original square.We were actually ahead of time

Prese le camere, dopo aver fatto unabella doccia, stavamo facendoci unprogramma per la serata…. Però acausa della lontananza dei paesi vicinie per un disguido con i proprietari delLocale decidiamo di mangiare proprioalle 17,00, al calar del sole, esattamen-te come facevano i nostri antichipastori. Ceniamo e, dopo un'agguerri-tissima partita a calcio balilla, alle 21,00andiamo a letto. Nemmeno il tempo difarci qualche scherzo che già si dorme(la giornata anche se piacevole è statamolto stancante). Sveglia di buon ora,una colazione veloce ed alle 9,00 solitostudio delle carte, un saluto con gliamici Massimo e Fabio, e si parte. Io,Tonino e Vincenzo dopo aver controlla-to le moto e rifatto il pieno, prendiamouna strada sterrata appena qualchecentinaio di metri dall’Hotel; con Fabioe Massimo l’incontro è prestabilito:salvo inconvenienti ci si vede a SANTACROCE DI MAGLIANO.Iniziamo a risalire il Tratturo che spes-so diventa asfaltato, dopo qualche chi-lometro passiamo vicino a Morronedel Sannio antico centro sannitico lacui popolazione nel 320 a.c., sconfitta aLucera, passò sotto il dominio Romano.Il paese è ricco di storia: reperti antichi,chiese e monumenti che confermanole sue origini. Dopo Morrone delSannio si arriva a RIPABOTTONI, circon-
data di fossi, la parte più antica delpaese è costruita sopra uno scoglio ditufo, a metà costa di una montagnaalta 903 metri, qui il tratturo lambiscel’abitato; lungo il cammino, il tragitto èora asfalto ora costituito da strade dicampagna. Il Tratturo è ben visibiledalle numerose segnalazioni cheincontriamo.

Without even time to tella few jokes, we fall asleep immediate-ly (as well as being enjoyable, the daywas very tiring). We awake early, and
after a quick breakfast and the usualchecking of the maps, at 09:00 we saygoodbye to our friends Massimo andFabio, and we are off. After a check ofthe ‘bikes and filling up with petrol,Tonino, Vincenzo and I pick up a dirtroad only a few hundreds of yardsfrom the hotel; with Fabio andMassimo, our next meeting is alreadyplanned: problems aside, we wouldmeet at SANTA CROCE DI MAGLIANO.We start again to ascend the Tratturo,which is often tarred, and after a fewmiles we pass close-by to Morrone delSannio. Morrone del Sannio has anancient Sannitic centre, the popula-tion of which was defeated at Lucerain 320 BC, and thence it passed underRoman rule. The village is rich in histo-ry: ancient objects, churches andmonuments that are a testimony to itsorigins. After Morrone del Sannio wearrive at RIPABOTTONI, which is sur-rounded by ditches, with the oldestpart of the village built under a rockyoutcrop, half-way up a mountain thatreaches to 903 m above sea level. Herethe Tratturo skirts the edge of the vil-lage, and along this section the surfa-ce is sometimes asphalt and someti-mes dirt track. The Tratturo is easilyvisible because of the numerous signswe meet.Damn! A problem!

Accidenti! Un'intoppo!Probabilmente qualche proprietarioterriero, o qualcuno in vena di scherzi,ha spostato i cartelli del Tratturo facen-doci finire in posti inaccessibili e total-mente distanti dal Tratturo stesso.Durante questo tragitto abbiamo deiproblemi con la ruota posteriore dellaYamaha TT dell’amico Tonino, risolto ilproblema si prosegue; dalla Stazione diRipabottoni si risale verso nod-estverso Bonefro e San Giuliano diPuglia(sventurato centro dove qualcheanno fa crollò la scuola ed uccisenumerosi bambini); qui la strada delTratturo divide quasi i due centri perpoi costeggiare il Paese di Santa Crocedi Magliano importante centro agrico-lo e artigianale del Molise, in provinciadi Campobasso. Circa 5.000 abitanti, èsituato sulle colline delimitate a valledal fiume Fortore e dal torrente Tona.Santa Croce di Magliano dista da

Here the Tratturo almost dividesthese two centres, to then go roundthe village of Santa Croce di Magliano. Foggia 80 km, 52 ha Campobasso, 100da Isernia, 280 da Roma, 140 daPescara, 220 da Napoli. Essendo situa-to ad un altezza di 608 metri sul livellodel mare Santa Croce di Maglianovanta un vasto e delizioso panorama:per tre quarti si scorgono colline emontagne, tra le quali spicca, a nord-ovest, la cima della Majella con le suesplendide cime imbiancate. A sud-est sipuò ammirare la lunga striscia di mareAdriatico che va da Termoli fin quasi aManfredonia. Nelle giornate più limpi-de si riesce a scorgere nitidamente ilgruppo delle Isole Tremiti. Giunti a Santa Croce, ci ricongiungia-mo con Fabio e Massimo, e facciamocon loro uno spuntino. Durante lacolazione siamo raggiunti da alcuniamici con i Quad incontrati qualchechilometro prima, con i quali scambia-mo informazioni sul Tratturo e ci
diamo degli appuntamenti per il futu-ro. Preso un caffè ci riavviamo in dire-zione Puglia. Per un bel pezzo ilTratturo è bellissimo. Si vede quelfiume silente, un tempo d’erba adessodi terra e breccia, salire e scendere perle colline; sembra proprio un enormeserpentone sterrato che procede a zigzag per i monti del Molise per poi ada-giarsi sulla calma della pianuraPugliese. Giungiamo all’ultimo cartelloche indica il tratturo che ci porta preci-samente sui ruderi di un antico e bellis-simo Mulino ormai diroccato; solo aguardarlo sembra voglia narrarci leinnumerevoli storie delle migliaia digenti passate e magari accampatesi neisui pressi. Incontriamo il fiume Fortore,che non possiamo oltrepassare in nes-sun modo e dobbiamo per forza aggi-rarlo prendendo la Strada Provinciale46 che ci porterà a San Paolo di Civitate

As Santa Croce diMagliano is located at an altitude of608 m above sea level, it provides avast and wonderful panorama, three-quarters of which look out at hills andmountains, among which there is thepeak of the Maiella to the north-west,with its splendid white, snow cap. Tothe south-east there is the longstretch of the Adriatic Sea to admire,which reaches from Termoli almost asfar as Manfredonia. On the clearestdays, it is even possible to see theTremiti Islands.Once at Santa Croce, we meet up with
Fabio and Massimo again, and have abreak with them. During this, we arejoined by a few friends with Quads,who we met up with a few miles befo-re. We exchange information aboutthe Tratturo and arrange to meet inthe future. After a coffee, we head offagain towards Puglia. For a goodstretch here the Tratturo is beautiful…we see it as this silent river, once ofgrass, now of earth and gravel, risingand falling with the hills… it reallyseems to be an enormous dirt snakethat heads off at a zig-zag throughthe mountains of Molise before ope-ning out into the calm of the Pugliaplain. Le origini diSan Paolo risalgono all'inizio del primomillenio a.C., quando in zona si stabili-rono i Dauni, che fondarono una gran-de città chiamata Tiati, nome attribui-tole nel V secolo a.C.Da San Paolo il viaggio è “purtroppo”da fare quasi tutto in asfaltato, infattiin terra di Puglia ormai i Tratturi e trat-turelli non esistono più. Arriviamo adApricena Città del Marmo e dellaPietra, verso le ore 14,00. Apricena è uncomune di 13.542 abitanti della pro-vincia di Foggia. Fa parte del ParcoNazionale del Gargano. Situata tra ilTavoliere delle Puglie e il Gargano.La maggior parte dell'economia ruotaintorno alle cave di pietra. La pietra diAPRICENA, oltre a essere usata comemateriale di costruzione in Italia, vienefrequentemente esportata all'estero,principalmeante in Germania,Giappone e Cina.Qui veniamo raggiunti da Fabio eMassimo.Siamo felici anche se un po' increduli diavercela fatta. The origins of SanPaolo arise at the start of the first mil-lennium BC, when the Dauni wereimportant in the area; it was they whofounded a large city called Tiati, thename attributed to San Paolo in the Vcentury BC.From San Paolo, the rest of the trip isunfortunately almost always onasphalt; indeed, in the Region ofPuglia, the Tratturo and the minorsheep trails no longer exist. We thenarrive at Apricena, City of Marble andRock, at around 14:00 hours.APRICENA is a municipality of 13,542inhabitants in the Province of Foggia.Situated between Tavoliere dellePuglie and the Gargano, it is part ofthe Gargano National Park. 250gr di farina, 50 gr di zucchero, 2 uova, 2 cucchiai di strutto -1 pizzico di bicarbonato - 1 uovo sodo - 1 ramo di ulivo - 1 tuor-lo d'uovo_Impastare la farina, le uova, lo zucchero, il bicarbo-nato e l'olio, per rendere la pasta morbida, aggiungere un po’di latte. Attorcigliare la pasta ottenuta intorno al ramo di ulivo,inclinato ad arco. Porre al centro l'uovo sodo e ungere il tutto conil tuorlo d'uovo. Mettere il dolce nella teglia unta con olio e fari-na. Infornare e aspettare circa 20 minuti. Il nome di questo dolcetradizionale pasquale deriva dalla forma di un becco di colom-ba a cui assomiglia. Simbolo di pace per il ramo di ulivo, venivasoprattutto consegnato ai ragazzi il lunedì di Pasqua, quando,infilato al braccio, veniva poi consumato al Santuario dellaMadonna Incoronata, protettrice di Apricena._Traditional Eastercake. 250 g flour - 50 g sugar - 2 eggs - 2 spoonfuls of pork fat- Pinch of bicarbonate - A little milk - 1 boiled egg. - 1 olive twig.- 1 egg yolk. - Knead together the flour, eggs, sugar, bicarbona-te and oil, and to obtain a soft dough, add a little milk. - Thisdough is then wrapped around the olive twig, which is bentaround to form an arc.
