The comb~t vest no" being ,.,rn by !:arines in front line battalions ha.s lJOI'Ved extremely ef:rective in nreventing casual ties and fa tali ties. The vest weights eight (g) pounds e.nd is so designed that the efficiency of tne wearer is not me.terially hpmpered. Tt:is hPs been proven in eomb~.t. The Battalion Snrgeons treating cesu"l ties wearing vests are impressed by the life saving e.bi.L1ties of the vest from all types of low muzzle vel<>Ci ty wee:pons. In one instance a !Jlai! we.s literally sprayed ~ri th a "burp g=", the only wound he suffered was a bullet in the upper ara not protected by the vest. Another :patient tree.ted for neck end low bal'k lac~rations wore s. vest containing two large 6omm mortar gragments still imbecHed on ee-<lh side of the midline. These fragments ''":re sufficient to have caused large sucking •·'Ounds in each lung, normally fatal •ri thout immediate first p.id. In action 28 May 1952 one man was injured in o.is chest by a small shell fragment \•ihich otherwise li'Ould have been sto::rned by the vest. Alternate methods of closure, used in conjunction with a.n imnroved zi'!'Per, would be buttons or tie strings. •n th such su-ryplementel means of closure the vests could be >!<lrn efficiently if the ,ip.,er is not operating.
