17. 5th :llarines Qpat'a.tion Order 16-51 which confirlll()d the previous warning order to JIIOVe to HOOGCHON on 17 ll/lrch and pass through the 7th !.IP..rinos linea on 18 llll.rch, was received at 0300. At 0645 the battalion Coomanding Officer and the S-.3 dapa.rted to reconnoiter the new battalion sector of rosponsibilit:r and at 1030 conferred with the regilllental collll!landat". .3rd Battalion, 7th Jle.rinos, the unit Which this battalion was to relieve, was contacted by Lieutenant colonel MARTIN a.nd Captain AVERIU.. :t:t had been originally planned to move tho batt!!.lion out, \,lOllllOOllcing at about 1200, but due to difficulty in obtaining transportation, the movomcnt was dela:yed. · The battalion COlllllander confarrod with tho ,3rd Battalion, 7th Ya.rines COlllllander and plans wore made for elc:ments of the 3rd Battalion, 7th 1larims to :Petrol forward of prasent positions prior ·to the 2nd Battalion; 5th Jtarines passing through. All fires that the 3rd Battalion, 7th Yarinas had planned were to be executed under the control of the 3rd Battalion, 7th llarines~ The 7th llllrines regimntaJ. COilllllanding Officer disapproved the battalion patrolling forward of their positions prior to being relieved but tho heri!.Ssing fires missions were cerried out during the night. Three (3) attended sick call this date, thrae (3) were evacuated and two (2) returned to duty-. Regimental Operation order 17-51, received at 2155, instructed the rogiln<lnt of its zone ot action for the attack on 18 llal'ch and notified. the 2nd Battalion, 5th llarines that it was to aieze Regimental Objective One end Three.
18. At 0700 the battalion commenda- heid a conference ar1d issued his attack order. The plan ot attack wa.a for Easy company to pe.as through How company, 7th Marinas (in position at TA 0373 A B) am secure high ground at TA 0374. DOg COmpany was to PI!.SS through Item company, 3rd Battalion, 7th llarines, in TA 0474 U V P.lld attack along a ridge line to seize regilll:mtal objective one in tho 2nd Battalion, 5th llllrinos sector. :rox COmpany WaJS in reserve. One (1) platoon of tanks trom Dog company, 1st Tank Battalion end one (1) platoon of mgineera from Able company, lst Engineer Battalion were attached to support the attack. Ea.s:r COmpany departed tho a.ssOOlbly area at 0825 end began to pass through How company at 1000. The passage of lines was complotod by 1035. Dog oompan;r departed from the a.ssanbly area at 0030 and passed through Item Company at 0920. A platoon of Fax: Company- with tho 2nd Platoon of Dog canp.m;y tanks attached proceeded up the valley in TA OJ7.3 to 11.Pprox:Unately TA 0373 H; at 1050 two (2) add:itional tanks,· om equipped with a flamothrowor and tho other with a loudspeaker, were attached. Dog-3 patrol had positioned itself in TA 9994 V and the East-2 patrol was located at TA 0093 c for tho night.
