1, SUMMARY
For the first six days of .)uly, the 1st Battalion, 5th i-<arines was
in I Corps Reserve at C~np Casey (CS 307984), Its primary mission for
this period as an element of I Corps Reserve was tc move on order to
ant designated assembly area; be prepared to counter-attack on order
and sieze objectives in its zone of action1 and be prepared on order
to organize, occupy and defend the VJJR in its zone of action, One of
its seconda.~ wiseions was rear area defense against hostile ground
and airborne ,ositiona, Another secondary mission was to be prepared to
move immediately on order of £ighth Army Headquarters to the city of
Seoul by moto:r convoy, for the purpose of augmenting the Seoul City
Colllllland, protecting certain supply dumps and installations within the
city and guarding the fuel p-1.pc '..ine r-'..1.n .. 11ing throu.zh the city, In
order to accomplish this rr.is:;ion ·,rith maximum speed and efficiency,
the battalion rewAined in a six hour alert status for this period.
On the eighth of July t:C.e battalion completed a relief of the
reserve battalion H.+,h Ini'adry Hegiment, 25th Division, U.S.A.

mission wae to maintain one company ready to move out on one hour notice during hours of darkness prepar~d to occupy blocking positions or to wxecute the counter-attack mission. Additional missions of daily patrolling the regimental r&ar area, conducting maximum training consistent with assigned missions and of being prepared to relieve either MLR battalion on order were assumed.
The truce being signed on 27 July, MLR battalions withdrew !rom the demilitarized zone and the lst Battalion, 5th Marines assumed the mission of organizing, occupying and defending a general outpost line of resistance south of and roughly parallel to the southern boundary of the demilitarized zone. Tho battalion remained in this status for the rest of the month with CP location unchanged.
Throughout the first week of July, all units trained in basic •~bjects a.~d emall u~~t tactics and ~de preparations for the impending JnOve. Upon arrival at Camp !'eyers, a program of camp and drainage improvement was instituted and continued through the ~nth, Relocation of much of the available tentage was made and a .1ew shower unit installed, Companies conducted basic training as far as was practicable under the existing tactical commitments. During the period as regimental reserve a reinforced platoon was .............. On 4 July 1953, a carnival was held on tho Regimental Parade Ground for thn nurnoge of rai~ina f11nde for tho Navv Rulief Societv. The ~~~lr;~~-;JlO~~e~~d-by~the l~t-Batt'lllion and ~11 concessions .W<'ro operated by battalion personnel. Estimated attendance numbered ton thousand visitors and a net profit of $9348.05 was obtained, On 21 July the Battalion Chaplain presented a check for all profits to h&jor General. R. HcPa.t~ to be included in the battalion totals tor the Navy Relief Fund Drive,
An average of 19 men each week wore givtJp Neritorious Special Duty in Japan, ~~vies wore shown in the battalion theater nightly.
Many air raid alerts were rocioved during th~ period in both of the camp areas occupied. No bombs were dropped in either area.

All units of the battalion were engaged in basic subjects and small illlit training. i.mphasis for the rifle companies was on night defensive tactics while ',ieapons Company held gun drills and competitiva firing. On 2 July a conference o! all battalion co~enders, operations officers and intelligence officers was called at the Regimental CP and a warning order issued for the relief of tho lhth Infantry Re~iment. 25th Division bv the 5th lliarine Regiment, The 3oth rotation ctraft -departed. on 2 July, On 3 July the forward echelon cf Able Company departed CP and crun<> under operational control of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines,
lndependanco Day, Holiday routine prevailed throu~hout the dav. Company commanders effected l&iason with units to be r~lieved and representatives of the Jrd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment visited Camp Caaey preparatory to occupying it on our departure, A carnival, sponsored by tho let Battalion, was held on the Regimental Parade Ground and attcn~iee was estiu~ted at ton thousand customer-a. ~~T~ng the concos~iona operated wore refreshment stands, a dunking stool, ring games and bingo. The divi8ion band providod music for th~ occasion.
5- JULY
Holiday routine prevailed throughout the day, Many of the men attended various church aorvicce during the morning and cng~d in competitive athletics during the afternoon. Staff and companies continued r~co~~aisanncc of the arons to b~ occupied=
6- 7 JULY
Training schedule was cancelled, All units made preparations for movemem; 1>o new area. Tht> first serial of vehicles loft. the battalion CP at. 1307, Motor movement and police of the old area continued through both days and a rear echelon security and police detail wac cstabli&~cd. Motor movement continued through th.o night of 7-S July.
8 JULY
The last elements or ~ne Dat~a~1on arrived at Camp Meyers. All units continued on the camp improvement program, Much o£ the

Personnel of the 34th Replacement Draft joined the battalion. Test
firing o£ all weapons by Baker and Charley Companies continued, A rein

19 JULY
Holiday routinQ prevailed throughout the day for all personnel in
excess of tactical commitments. MAny of the men attended various church
services during the morning and engaged in athletics in thw company areas
in the afternoon.
