a. At the beg:l.nn:l.ng of the month the 5th Harines was in 1st Harine Div:l.s:l.on reserve south of HOENGSONG, KOREA, l'lhile the 1st and 7th l·Iarines tV'ere engaged in attacking the Chinese and l,;orth Korean Communists to secure limited objectives 1n the vicinity of HONGCHON. The Regiment rema:l.ned 1n reserve, occupying tl-m different positions (generally in the vic1ni ty of DS 0841 and DS 0853) , through 15 !-!arch.

b. On 16 Harch the 3rd Battal:l.on, 5th l•!ar:l.nes, passed to control of the 1st Hari..""les a..Yl.d attacked and. seized Division Objective EASY. On 17 March the Regiment (Reinf) moved to an assembly area at HONGCRON and on 18 March passed through the 7th Harines and attacked to secure limited objectives to the north.

c. From 18 through 21 Narch the Regiment continued the attack, pursuing retreating elements of the Chinese Commun1st Forces. On 19 Harch the 3rd 1:lattal.:l.on returned to 5th Mar:l.nes

5th Harines consolidated positions and patrolled extensively while preparing defenses on JIG throughout the i'emainder or the month.

e. Apparently the enemy had withdrawn the bulk .of hie forces across the 38th Parallel, leaving behind only delaying forces to keep contact ~rith the Regiment. M=. 1 a. When the reporting period opened the 5th Marines CP was located at DS 0841.-N. Anti-Tank Company was at DS 0941.-P, 4.2 11 Mortar Company at DS 0941.-K, let battalion at DS 0841-H, 2nd Battalion at DS 0634-C and 3rd Battalion at DB 0840-C.

b. The Regiment had completed operations northeast or \'lONJU, taking the assigned lst !-Iarine Division objectives, and was in Division reserve m1en the month opened. All units were patrolling areas to their :rront, fla.~ks a..~ d. rear (See CO 5tl11~a.r dis 011250! and Ol2120I, enclosed) and were consolidating and orga­nizing defensive positions. The 2nd Battalion was providing security for the city of WON~~ and Division elements in that vicinity.

c. The Regimental Administrative Center was located in MASAN, KOREA (TA 6298). a. Operation Order 14-51 (enclosed) >vas issued. It assigned patrol sectors and ordered units to maintain security by constant day and night patrols. It alao directed small-unit training and combat conditioning with emphasis on night operationsw

b. Personnel report for period 1 through 3 Harch: 21 non-battle casualties; 2 officers, 3 enlisted USMC and 1 officer USN replacements received; 2 off'icers, 40 enlisted US..1..1C returned to duty.

c. Recommendations for awards '1-rere received from sub­ordinate units in the follovring numbers: 4 Navy Cross, 4 Silver 5tar, 5 Bronze Star, 10 Letters of Commendation.

d. The t•w new Hedical Officers who reported to the Regiment •~ere assigned one to the Regimental Aid Station as Assistant Regimental Surgeon and one to the 1st Bat",;alion. One 3/4 ton Dodge closed ambulance used by the Regimental Aid Station was damaged td1en it was struck from behind by a truck. Loan of another ambulance was promised. to the Reg1ment by "C 11 Medical Company.

e. SuPPlY of fuel continued to be short, averaging 400 gallons of gasoline a day for each battalion. No diesel fuel was available, and all the tent stoves were using gasoline. A totaJ. of a,oco pairs of' aocke were recel.ved al'l<'l. <'l.is'tributed to subordinate units. No supplies of toilet paper or cigarettes were being received. This was considered undesirable at a time when units were on "A11 and "B" rations ("C 11 rations contain these items).

a. At 1000 lstMarDiv dispatch order 0409441 was re­ceived. lt directed the 5th Marines~ 1ess the 2nd Battalion, to commence movement to a new assembly area in the vicinity of DS 0947 to 1047 not later than 1300.

1st Service Battalion for salvage or return to stock. The forward group of the Supply Section, including the Assistru1t Supply Ofr1cer, Or&1ance Officer- Wld ~~el, ration and ordnance men, was with the Regimental CP. This group was supplying the Regiment with Class I, III and V supplies from for•~ard supply dumps. ·

c. During this period rations were being d.:t•awn !"rom the Eighth U. S, Army. The daily ration thus was figured on the army ration table. The Regiment ~1as drawing 20 per cent extra rations to make up for no bread, increased appetites and short rations.

d. Preparations >vere under way to move the Regimental. rear group in \10NJU to the forwm•a_ CP. Such items as cots, extra tentage, excess clothing and individual equipment Here turned over to the 1 at Service Battalion.

e. The l-lotor Transuort Maintenance Section moved from 1•/0NJ'J to the Regim6ntal. CP. Deadlined on this date were the following vehicles: 6 i-ton 4x4 trucks, 1 ~-ton trailer, 1 1-ton trailer, 2 3/4-ton ambulances, 2 2t-ton 6x6 trucks and 1 M29C. Repair parts continued to be in short supply.

a. The 5th Narines remained in its assembly area. At 2205 CG 1 stgarDiv dispatch order 1220101 was received. This directed the 5th Marines to move to an assembly area in the vicinity of DS 0853 to 0953. The movement was to commence on 14 March.

b .. The Regimental EU'1Ct Battalion Medical. Sections beg~n to vaccinate all personnel against smallpox in accordance 1vi th Commander Naval Forces, Far East, 1 tr Serial 1633 dtd 26 Feb 1951.

c. T~e Re~imentat Supply Section continued to turn i~ excess equipment to Division supply units in prepara­~i~n ~o~ movinrr the rear supply group to the forward 6P:-- E:;.~ess clothing that wa-s picked up from replace­ments was issued to Regimental units.

a. At 1000 the Regimental quartering party left the CP to reconnoiter the newly assigned assembly area. The party returned at 1315. At 2220 lstMarDiv Operation Order 8-51 was received, It ordered the 5th Marines to occupy the reserve positions mentioned above. It also directed the Regiment to prepare to attack on Division order to seize Division Objective CH~~IE, north of HONGCHON, and to be prepa.red to continue the attaok, on order, to seize Objective FOX.

b. At 1800 Regimental Operation Order l4A-5l (enclosed) was issued.

c. The villages of KORIGOL (TA 1145) and TUD.AM-NI (TA 1144) l';ere investigated by a 2nd Battalion; 5th Marines patrol accompanied by the Assistant Battalion Surgeon. About 20 eli1erly persons and small children were found to be suffering from disease while another 20 to 25 persons were apparently not ill. In the absence of laboratory facilities it could not be determined whether the disease was a form of typhus or a combination of influenza and malnutrition. One elderly man was near deL-th while another member of the household had recently died. All persons questioned said they had not eaten .f'or:; two to tl'J'ee days. Tr .. ere l'lere no persons in the villages between the estimated ages of 12 and 50. These facts ••ere reported to the lstMarDiv Civil Affairs Officer by the 5thl4ar Civil Affairs Officer. The former promised that aid would be sent to the villages.

a. The 5th l1arines displaced to its new assembly area beginning at 0'?30. A1 1 units closed by 1605. The new Regimental CP ooened at DS 0853-Q at 1030. (See Operation Order~ l4A-51, enclosed).

b. On the ~ove the Regiment used its Command radio net for comrnunlcations. By 1 ?00 all units ~vere tied in by wire \vi th Regiment. 'l'he Co:nmunications Section began using, with excellent results, the 296A ~tenna, commonly called the "treetop antenna". l'h~s an,;enna extended voice transmission of SCR-300 radios to five

c. The Regimental move was by :t'oot and motor. A total o:t' 35 augmenting vehicles were used on a shuttle basis to move equipment. Tne trucks were supplied by the let and 7th Hotor Transport Battalions.

d. On this date one day's supply of "C" rations was in hands of all units plus another day's supply in the Regimental supply dump. All general. supply was in lOne rear echelon Of the Supply Section in WONJU. Fuel and rations 1-:ere picked up by trucks from subordinate units~ Two Regimental organic trucks \-lere deadJ.ined :t'or repairs and a third was beinll: used by the rear echelon, making the shortage of organic transportation critical. A salvage crew •ras at work in the Regimental area picking up aoandoned U, S. Army gear in the area.

e. D~ring the evening the S-1 Section o~fice tent caught fire and burned. Several important reports, records and correspondence \>ere destroyed along with field desks, supplies and personal equipment of section personnel. As a result CO 5thMar dis 15002.51 and 151135I {enclosed} was issued.

f. The Artillerv Liaison Section established wire communications with lst Battalion, 11th Marines, in the ne•r CP locations.

a. At 0200 Operation Order 15-51 (enclosed) was issued. It assigned patrol sectors and directed extensive patrolling by all subordinate units. In the late morning verbal orders were received trom Division directing that a combat patrol be sent to contact elements of the 2nd U. S. Army Division at Hill 675 {:US 1664). Orders were issued to the 3rd Battalion to ma:ke the patrol (See CO 5thMar dis 1511061, enclosed). This patrol received light mortar fire and machine gun fire on the way and because darkness was approaching and it had been ordered to return to ita base prior to

'i'he lst Platoon >vas pioneering (breaking trail) for the 1st Battalion and the 2nd Platoon was doing the same for the 2nd Battalion. 1'he 3rd Platoon was used to improve and maintain the split MSR. ~'he lst Platoon r-emoved ~~ti-t~~k mines on the road and in the creek bottom at DS 0176-M and removed 82mm mortar ammunition rigged as mines on the road.
