Fredy's Back! That's not the one on Elm Street, for all youHalioweeners, but right here at P.O. Box 99. For those ofyou who read the TRL masthead in the September issue andwondered whether there was a coup or an overtlirow ofTRRC's government, sorry, nothing so exciting; it was just anold listing inadvertently printed. But, because we are sort ofa democracy, if you'd care to legally oust the current board -now's your chance: Nominations go to Pete Meisler by theNovember 10th meeting (7:30 P.M. at Teatowm). Electionsare at the December meeting.

A Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Ed! goes toMyles O'Rhodes for all the concern, time, and effort onbehalf of the "NYC Marathon List of 24," who were sub

jected, rejected, and dejected (some even got the applicationchecks back-no-nae-never-and-get-out-of here!), but they'reall IN now, bringing the TRRC total marathoners on November 14th to 88, and we need "only 40" to score ($500a w a r d e d f o r 4 0 c l u b m e m b e r s u n d e r 4 h o u r s f o r o u rsecond year?!?!) See you on the bus, Gus and at the party,A r t i e .

The 16th Annual Biathlon: What A Day!It was a great day. The

multicolored balloons were still inplace from the night before, and thesun was bright, making for a comfortably warm morning. It was justright for the Taconic Road Runners'16th Annual Biathlon. And, thanksto the numerous volunteers: Pete,Carol, Pat, Karen, Debi, John, Ed,Tom, Rudi, Tony, Joe, Nick,Melanie, Hank, Steve, Pearce, andMary - my love, Joanne - my boatcompanion, Kevin - my T-Shirtdesigner and the lifeguards, everything clicked. Thanks one and all.You were great!

While I'd like to write moreabout the event itself, I can't,because, candidly, I didn't see muchof it. But, I can tell you that over thelast 16 years, there has never been acloser finish for 1st place. It was afantastic sight, with the spectators

loudly and joyously cheering on twounidentifiable athletes, each matching the other, stroke for stroke, overthe last 100 yards, as John Albaneseand Don Stanford pressed each otherright to the edge of the beach. Theydidn't know each other before theevent, but they do now! If they comeback next year, who knows, a photofinish possibly? Great job, guys!

Although Tom Neeson wasthe odds-on candidate for the "leadbathing suit award," entering thewater 4th overall at 17:47 andfinishing at 34:48, his greatlyimproved swimming ability did himin, losing the dubious title to BobLance, who entered the water 7thoverall at 18:21, but came out at3 8 : 0 5 .

This was my first year as theRace Director. Without having had

the opportunity to observe HowieBashant direct the first 15,1 seriously doubt it would have come offas well as it did. Howie, many, many thanks!

FYI: The club loses moneyon this event, and the participationhas been dwindling the last couple ofyears. It has never been a big event, and really can't be, because of thesize of the beach area, which is whywe haven't widely promoted it.However, we could easily quadruplethe munber of participants withoutconcern for a compromise in qualityand safety. If you'd like it to remainon our calendar, drop us a note, andconsider entering it. With practice,we can all safely swim a hdf-mile ormore. There are roughly ninemonths until the traditional date ofthe next Biathlon.

Mitzi & Maguire SizzleI n S o m e r s

Tlie heat and hi l ls didn' t

bother Tara Maguire and DaveMitzi a bit at the Somers Lions Club1 OK on August 29th. Mitzi cajne inat 32:15, and Maguire bested thewomen's fie ld wi th a fine 38:24,Tara also claimed the "First Female

Somers Resident" Award, while theFirs t Male Res ident Award went to

Chuck Creel. Despite the difficultyof the course, the warm temperatures, and a conflict with a team event in

Central Park, participation at thisrace was up from last year by morethan 50 runners.

Ed McLaughlin, giving outthe awards, told Dave Mitzi to markthis day down in his record book," asthe second place finisher was "BillRogers"" - not THE Bill Rogers, butthe winner of the unofficial "traveledfurthest to run the race" Award, oneWilliam Rogers from Williamsburg,Virginia. Another "UnofficialAward" goes to Howie Solow for

September 10, 1993

Dear Melanie,A few quick words of

praise to you and Angelo and theSomers Lions Club for putting onsuch a challenging and well-organized 1 OK race. You musthave sat right next to God,because you even got the weatherto cooperate and the humidity tobe kind to us runners. My hat'soff to you ajid your crew fordoing such a superb job.

Also, please keep meposted on any Women's Master'sTeam races. I really enjoyrunning for Taconic road Runners, because you all add the"ftin" ingredient. I'll try to do mybest to run well and have fun

doing it.Sincerely,E r i k a A b r a h a m

running his first race as a 50-year old(many more to come, Howie!!).And, we can't leave out a specialmention for Bob Rogan, who bestedthe 60 plus field at the age of 72 ~and not one word of complaint fromBob about running against "all thosek i d s . "

As ever, this race directorappreciates the help of the manyvolunteers — all I had to do was standaround atid be nervous ~ while Ed

McLaughlin started the race and didthe scoring, with the help of JohnDugdalc (a surprise and welcomeguest volunteer!). John Hallinan, before he ran in the race, brought theequipment and set up the coursewith the help of Larry Lenahan, although John was heart to muter atthe finish line, "I should have workedthis one!" Rudy Einhorn andNorma directed traffic and took splittimes, with Susan Solow's help.Larry Lenahan handled the crotchety

Clironomex, which is obviously notaging well, unlike the rest of us!

Many tiianks to JoanneBertram, Rick Salemmo, andLinda and Paul Geppert, who diddouble duty at both registration andfinish line. Last, but not least,Richard Marlngionc and ConniGrace, with our youngest volunteer(another "unofficial award"), Coimi'stwo year old son, Nicholas, distributed T-shirts, and then came over towork at the finish l ine.

Tlie only thing missing wasGreg Diamond's computer scoring, soplease excuse any typos in theresults. Luckily, there were a few"dinosaurs" around (no names, please) who remember how to scoremanually.

Hope to see you all nextyear!!

TRRC "Cross-Trainers" Fred Loehfelm, Brian Wheaton & Jack Brcnnanare shown here with 1993 TRRC golf tourney winner Tom Lambert. "Afun time was had by all!"

Juveni le D iabetesF o u n d a t i o n 5 KBy Fredy Low

On Saturday, September 18th, TRRC, withPepsiCo and Pepsi-Cola, ran the Pepsi-SUNY Fall 5K tobenefit juvenile diabetes. This was an identical USAT&Fcertified course which was used for the Human Race inMay. Next year, plan on running both of them tocompare your early season (May 21st?) and Fall (September 17th?).

As far as numbers go, (approximately 160nmners/500 walkers) it was good for the inclementweather, but as a fundraiser and event to be at, it wasoutstanding! ESPN's Chris Herman was the race starter, announcer, et al, along with John Ratzenberg ("Cliff themailman" from Cheers), who were both fabulous to workwith - real pros. Cliffs (or should I say John's) sex yearold son has diabetes, so his attendance and kind words atthe awards' ceremony were personal and heartfelt.

Greg Diamond (also scorekeeper!) ran downPEPSI Lane all alone at 18:17. Sara Collins was the 2ndplace female runner at 21:38; followed closely by SusanPoet at 21:51 (Susan only planned to run through thisone!) Staying on the female side, TRRC's Meghan Quinntook the under 19 medal in 26:01, followed by Kimberly

Afew more TRRCers of note were: Jack Brennan first 50-59 at 18:59, followed by Demiis Daly at 19:42; JohnBates 1st 60+ at 22:42, and Charlie Heming at 32:07 wassecond. Great fun for all - lotsa' Pizza Hut and Pepsi -we'l l be back in 1994.

W o r l dUniversity Games

T O R C H R E L A YJUiVE22-JULYS. 1993

The World University Games, held this past Summer inBuffalo, is the largest all-amateur event in the world! Inthe 70 year history of the Games, this was the first timethe United States has ever hosted the event.

To promote the Games, New York Telephone sponsored a Torch Relay. The relay began on June 22nd atthe Statue of Liberty and was carried across New YorkState by thousands of relay "nmners" in one-tenth of a

mUe segments. The trek took 17 days and covered 1,100 miles! As people lined up for their tenth of a mile run, they were met with the torch and a Cadre runner. The

cadre runners was a group of "real" runners (who also happen to be NYT or NYNEX employees) assembled byNew York Telephone to run with the torch carrier and to participate in the New York Telephone P.R. events. Itwas the cadre runners responsibility to provide a little company for the torch carrier and to ensure safety - you'dbe surprised how many people singed their hair from carrying the torch too close to their body! I was veryflattered when NYT asked me to participate as a cadre runner! While 1 would like to think they asked me formy running ability, I'm sure the fact that I'm a consultant at NYNEX had a little to do with it!

Of the 17 days of the relay, I was able to run on 2 of them. My first running day was the Garden City toShea Stadium and

enough in the Metsthe Cooperstown toRome with the Rome

Boilermaker, they

White Plains leg. My favorite event that day was running the Torch into Shea Stadium andhanding off to Rusty Staub before the Mets/Expo's game. It was early enough in the Metsseason that there were even some fans there! My second running day was the Cooperstown toRome leg. We ran through Utica with the Utica Road Runners Qub and into I Rome with the RomeRoad Rurmers Qub! The relay passed through Utica a week before the Utica * Boilermaker, theywere all psyched! Of course, I told anyone that would listen that I ran for Taconic! Most were familiar with theClub and said, "That's a nice Qub". 1 couldn't believe how many people showed up to carry the torch in Utica. It was such a big event the local TV news and newspapers all covered the event. When I expressed my surpriseto some of the torch carriers, they said "There's really nothing else to do in Utica, NY". I thought they werekidding, they weren't!

On my last 5 mile leg of running, it poured! I didn't think the people who were supposed to carry thetorch would want to - but I was wrong! They were so excited to be a part of this event I don't think I could havestopped them from running if I wanted to! And, of course, since they were so psyched, I didn't want to. We allran in this monsoon type rain storm. 1 was in a panic thinking the torch was going to go out, (that would havebeen isMly_bad!) but it didn't.

Anyway... if you ever have the opportunity to participate in an event like this - do it! - it's a prettyincredible experience! The company that was hired to administer this relay will also be doing the '96 OlympicTorch Relay to Atlanta. So for all of us that don't qualify for the Olympics (cough, cough) this may be theperfect alternative!

The Philipstown 10KRace Report

By Jim Bagg

This year's Philipstown lOK and Fall Festival washeld on October 2, 1993. Philipstown is an excellent venuefor a fast time as the race is usually held on a cool Fall dayand the course is a net down hill. The race starts in

Garrison, with the first third of the course uphill. Theremainder is downliill to Cold Spring, with much of therace traversing dirt roads. The last half mile is down MainStreet Cold Spring, where you are cheered on by thethousands of people attending the Fall Festival. Thisprovides a rush greater than anything you can buy on thestreets of Washington Heights!

Westches te r Road Runner Puma Track C lubmember George Buckheit strode into town, no doubtexpecting to toy with the field. Well, he ran into Taconicbuzz saw, Dave Mitzi, who successfully defended the titlehe won in 1992. First master was Taconic's own road

warrior, Bob Hermesch, who finished fourth overall. Thisguy excretes more carbo's than most people eat. Rightbehind Bob was Taconicite Ken Filmanski, making hismaster's debut on this day, his fortieth birthday. Ken'sphilosophy on carbo loading is a beer a mile. Ken alsoreceived a lucrative cash award for being the first ColdSpring resident to complete the race, which he immediately turned over to the Club officer with the note "Nomore Coors Light at the Wednesday group runs!" Suchsacrifices are what make this Club so great. Specialmention goes to Taconic member Tom Church. Tom hasnot been running much lately due to a stress fracture.Nevertheless, Tom pimied on the number and managed togamer an age group award. Adding insult to injury (punintended) Tom, who won this race in 1990 and 1991, wasrecognized by only one of the Philipstown phaithful whoyelled "Go Many!" as he motored down Main Street.

A bit of controversy occurred at the start as mybrother, T. Bagg, attempted to run as a female. AlthoughT. had a doctor's note explaining that his chromosomes hadbeen altered, a quick on-site physical inspection revealedthat nothing else had. As a form of protest, he/she rant therace as a topless bandit. No one seemed to notice exceptthe wag who previously yelled "Go Harry!" at TomChurch and now commented that he though Pete Corsinohad put on some weight. Rumor has it his guy cleans hiscontact lenses with turpentine. Tliere was also someconfusion at the award's ceremony as one Bill Foley fromCortlandt Manor (formerly from Peekskill) won a raffleprize and a completely different Bill Foley from Garrisonwon an age group award. To end this confusion, 1 suggestone of them change their name to Owen McCrudden.

Twin Cities Marathon: October 3, 1993By Katy Dady Quinn

A few months ago I mentioned to my brother, Pat Dady, thatSteve and I were thinking of runningt h e Tw i n C i t i e s M a r a t h o n . B e f o r ewe knew it, we received confirmation of our registration and gift T-shirts from Pat that said "In trainingfo r t he Tw in C i t i es Mara thon ! "

Okay, it was time to do more thanjust think!

Pat l ives in the Twin Cit ies

(of Minnesota). He came to NewYork to run "our" Marathon in 1988,and brought one of his South Dakotabuddies with him. (They have runover ha l f -a -dozen mara thons to

gether, including Boston.) Watchingthem run inspired Steve and me toget into running. In 1991 Pat flew into watch me run my first New YorkMarathon (and party with theTaconics afterward!) It seemed onlyright that we should now go and runTw i n C i t i e s w i t h h i m . U n f o r t u

nately, Steve's feet did not cooperatewith his training plans this summer,so he came along to support us.

Pat, Steve and I and Steve'sbrother Pat (Irom Eau Claire, Wise.)ran the tune-up 5 K in 29 degreewindy cold weather on Saturday,October 2. We then headed over tothe St. Paul Hilton to pick up ourregistration packets. There was NOline!!!! The expo was great, andeveryone was stocking up on winterrunning gear. (The weather predictions for the next day were stilluncer ta in . I t has been known tosnow on this marathon!)

We were blessed wi th

glorious weather on MarathonMorning, though. It was 49 degreesat the start and a surprising 75degrees by the time I was finishing!Bi l led as the most beaut i fu l urbanmarathon in the u s., the marathonstarts in downtown Minneapolis andends at the state Capitol in St. Paul. The staging area is the Hubert H.Humphrey metrodome. (It is great tobe able to just drive up, park, go inwhere it 's warm and where there are

ample clean bathrooms and waterfountains!) The course sends you

My brother Pat (who's run 22 marathons, including 11 consecutive TCM'S)and me at the finish - in front of the Minnesota State Capitol.

running beneath splashes of autumncolor, along four lakes and theMississippi River. It is truly gorgeous!

4,000 volunteers and200,000 spectators support therunners with extraordinary enthusiasm. This year, 5,083 officiallyfinished. (Registration is closed at6,000) Of that group, 15 had lastnames starting with "Q." Of those, 7were "Quinns." (I wasn't one ofthem, because Pat had registered mewith my maiden name, as KatyDady-Quinn.) I did enjoy the chalk-written messages for the Quirm'salong the way, though. Theyobviously had a well-organizedgroup. At mile 24, though, the finalmessage said, "The Quinns aredying!"

Steve and my gang of Dadyswere at mile 15 with signs and spiritto cheer us on. At mile 20, Stevesurprised me by stepping in andnuming with me. He stayed withme all the way to the finish.(Yes, his finish time was identical tomine. His start time, however, wasnot recorded!)

T h e fi n i s h i s t e r r i fi c . Yo urun past the green-domed cathedralof St. Paul, over the last rise anddown the smooth stretch of blackroad to the finish l ine. You take wi th

you memories of the excitement ofbeing among the 6,000 rumiers whoclustered in the early morning chili, poised for the starting gun amidcoffee-clutching well-wishers; thecheers along the course of peoplewho catch your eye and call out yourbib number or name if, like me, youwear it on your shirt; the spirit of thenumerous bands that played alongthe route, the memory of an amazingfan who magically appeared at fourdifferent spots playing her accordian;the finish line; the medallion aroundyour neck; tiie reunion and partyingwith family afterward; the sense ofsatisfaction in attaining a goal setmon ths be fo re !

Thank you Taconic buddies, especially Nancy, for ail the greattraining runs!

Ridgefield Half-Marathon: Sunday, October 3Nick Caswell

Taconic Road Runners had another good showing in Connecticut. For those of you not familiar withJohn Dugdale s race, trophies, medals or plaques are not de rigueur. Instead, cash in envelopes await thespeedy. Nonetheless, even if you are not a winner, I would recommend making the trip. The race is well-runand the post-race hospitality is excellent.

After the race, I had the best of both worlds: a good chat during a twenty minute cool-down witharguably the best runner in these parts and some fi-iendly talk with some of the nicest middle-of-the-packrunners in these parts. And what a glorious Autumn day it was!

Thanks go to John Dugdale, his friends at the Wolfpit Running Club, and all the tremendous supportin Ridgefield, CT for yet another great day at the races.

Kil ler Bees Invade TeatownB y B o b D a v i s ^

The novice team was told to arrive early and wear bright colors. "We wantyou to be very visible to them. Spread out and make yourselves available." Someone^ | ^ ^^yelled, "OK guys, here they come." They appeared suddenly through thetrees...seemingly in droves...enormous yellow and black things..droning alongslowly., .as if being directed by a single mind., .the smaller multi-color variety werearriving too...my blood ran cold...

The beginnings of another Stephen King novel? Hardly...The scene was the IBM parking lot near Teatown, and the Taconic Road

"N Runners Club was well-represented at the annual Teatown Country Fair held on—October 2nd. Many volunteers showed up including: Rich Adamsid, Pearce

Tom Casey, Bob Davis, Roger Cocking, Leo Gormley, LarryLenahan, Ed McLaughlin, Pat & Fred Loehfelm, and Joe Porcaro.

Most of us arrived at 8 A.M. It was a beautiful cool morning. Great Fairweather! Ed Buhl, President/Secretary of Teatown, turned us loose to do our thing.

Most of us were assigned to the "Parking Brigade," with a few doing other things such as Ed McLaughlin, who stuffed those enormous yellow and black buses with fair-goers.

Although the Fair did not officially open until 10 A.M., the "Killer Bees" came flooding in by 9A.M. Our trusty leader, Freddy Low, soon realized that buses and visiting cars should not be arriving at thesame gate. He and Pat raced to the main entrance to set up two access routes. The rest of us started parkingthe cars, vans and small trucks as fast as they came down the chute. Most of the vehicles parked where wetold them to, but a few went off on their own merry way, causing minor confusion. By 10 A.M., we had itdown to a science, and looked like real "Parking Pros."

Mid-way through our tour of duty, a young lady from Teatown drove by to take our lunch orders."Would we like smoked salmon, sausage and peppers, tuna fish, etc. to be delivered? What a country! Joeand I ate our sausage wedges with one hand and directed traffic with the other as cars kept streaming in. By 2P.M., the lot was pretty well filled up. We all had a great time; however, Rich Adamski said that the tipswere lousy.

Ed Buhl has advised that close to 5,000 people enjoyed the fair and that gross revenues were about$36,000. He said that Teatown was most appreciative for our assistance. Teatown has also sent thank youletters to our group and invited us to attend their Volunteer Thank You Party on October 17th.

We all had a great day! Those who were unable to make it, should consider it for next year! Threedates have also been set aside for doing trail maintenance. Call Tony Galfano or Fred Loehfelm if you canlend a hand.

Sonnenberg Scholarship Established:Taconic Road Runners extend their sympathies to the family of Ed Sonnenberg. Ed, father of Taconic Road

Runner and frequent age group wiimer, Brett Sonnenberg, died of a heart attack August 17 at the age of 41. He will bemissed by all of us who knew him.

An athlete and coach, Ed had played college basketball and continued to play and coach the game right up tothe night he died. Ed also encouraged Brett and other young runners to participate in numerous Taconic events.

Friends have established The Edward J. Sonnenberg Memorial Scholarhip which will be awarded annually toa senior boy and a senior girl basketball player at Mahopac High School. If you are interested in donating to the fund, send contributions to Edward J. Sonnenberg Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 552, Baldwin Place, NY 10505. Columbus Day and 25K RacesBy Scott Abercrombie

This year, 410 children ran in the 8th annual Columbus Day Running Racesfor children in elementary school grades 1 - 6. There were separate 1/4 mileheats, as required, for boys and girls in each grade, resulting in a total of 31 races.Kindergarten children are excluded because of time constraints. Winners in eachheat won medals and team points for their schools. The winning teams were all

Lakeland schools: Ben Franklin was first, Van Courtlandt, second, and Thomas Jefferson was third. In addition to the Peekskill 4H Club at the registration table, and the Peekskill High School Parents

Club manning the concession stand, we had a great crew of volunteers helping out: Jack Bums, TomChurch, Dennis Donohue, Debbie Farrell, Tony Galfano, John Hallinan, Bob Hermesch, Ed McLaughlin,Pete Meisler, Scot Mosenthal, Lori Polidoro, and Joe Porcaro.

The cinder track mile, which was to follow the children's race, was quickly changed to the miraclemile. Tony Galfano observed that it would be a miracle if we ran it, since many of us had mn a 25 K the daybefore, and the interest in the mile was not great. I would have dragged them all onto the track anyway, except I had just worked the midnight shift, and was feeling a fair amount of inertia myself. Oh, well!

The 25K was called the Marathon Tune-Up, and it was a point getter in the New York Road RunnersClub Series for 1993. Pemsing the results quickly after the race, it looked as though West Side Y beat ourMasters Team, but we still have a commanding lead over-all. Joe Porcaro led our team in 94 minutes andabout 15 seconds. Others on the team were Ken Filmanski, Tony Galfano, Bob Hermesch, Jim Martin, EdMcLaughlin, Howie Solow, Gary Struve, and me.

RUNNING PLUS a lot more1 wore my first pair of running shoes in 1963.

(They were called "Patricks"). That autumn, I ran inBlue Mountain Park. In 1964,1 was wearing Adidas andwas promptly thrown into the deep end - Van CortlandPark. And, I occasionally wore New Balance. After all,if coach Jolin Covert's runners at Ossining High Schoolwore them, then they must be good. Right? Yeah, 1though 1 knew a thing or two about running shoes, that isuntil I met Luis Guerra and Art Baisley at RUNNINGPLUS. I have been steadily impressed over the monthswith their understanding of rumiers' needs and theirinsights into the numing shoe business. These guys havebeen educating themselves on a constant basis about abusiness that has been taking quanmm leaps since I firstbegan running.

But what has recently intrigued me about Luisand Art is their dealing with the distributors in therunning shoes business. They are constantly fending offadvances to buy various inane lines of shoes as they keepin mind their regular customers, who will or will notwear the shoes being offered. You have to be aware ofso much these day. Luis and Art now have the bestworking knowledge of running shoes of anybody 1 know.Whether you want running shoes for long runs, temporuns, trails, tracks, or races, these guys can help. Thanksguys.
