P R E S I D E N T ' S C O L U M N -J A N U A R Y 1 9 9 5

HAPPY NEW YEAR: It's a new year, and we'vegot a full schedule of events for you. We will start ourrunning year with races in FDR State Park, with the usualmenu of the Freezer Fives, Mudders & Grunters, theSt.Patrick's Day Races and the Mother's Day 5K.

NYRRC EVENTS: TRRC will again beparticipating regularly in the NYRRC club championshipseries (most are run in Central Park.) We've had greatsuccess over the last couple of years. In January, thescoring event for both men and women will be theNorthwind lOK; in February the women's event will bethe Snowflake 4 miler, the men's event will be the BagelRun lOK; in March it will be the Brooklyn Half Marathon(men & women.) Participation is the key word here. Ifyou haven't run a race in Central Park, or haven't run oneas part of our TRRC team, please consider it. Travellinginto NYC is not that big a deal. We car pool from Rocky'sDeli, and more often than not hang around forre f reshments .

CLUB NIGHT: As a corollary to the above, anumber of Taconics will be attending the NYRRC ClubNight dinner on February 11, 1995, principally to collectthe hardware won by our Men's and Women's teams (andpossibly some individual awards) in 1994. If you areinterested, or are already planning to go to this event, please let me know so we can get a table together, splitthe bar bill, etc.

RYE DERBY: TRRC has been approached bythe organizers of the Rye Derby to take over thecoordination of the event, much the same as we do for theHuman Race. Before committing to this, I need to haveconfirmed volunteers for the race date which is Sunday,April 23, 1995. This is also the same weekend as ourSybil Luddington 50K/Relay (Saturday, April 22.) TRRCneeds your support to make these events happen. Pleasecontact me at 914-756-5074 to confirm that you can helpfor either (or both) events. I need to let the Rye Derbyfolks know our position by Jan. 15, however please don'twait till the last minute to call.

NEW/OLD PREZ: The wri ter of th is column has

changed since the last issue. Many thanks to FredLoehfelm for his efforts as prez over the last 2 years. There's no reasonable explanation for my second term asprez, just chalk it up to having a short memory.

TRRC EQUIPMENT: Race directors, specifically, and other Taconics, generally, if you have inyour possession ANY club equipment please bring it toRich & Joanna Nash so it can be inventoried and stored intheir bam. It is the responsibility of each race director topick up and retum all equipment to the bam, Rich andJoanna are generously providing warehousing for us, nota delivery service.

That's all for now, Ed (765-5074)

T A C O N I C S T A K E B U S E S T O M A R A T H O NBuses Get Lost in BIG APPLE

By Ed McLaughlinOver 60 Taconics made the trek through the five boroughs on November 6, Two busloads were deposited at the

entrance to Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The weather was warm and humid and therain that began falling while we cruised up Fourth Avenue did nothing to help us.

As usual, the crowds were terrific and were surprisingly large considering the crummy weather. There were plenty ofTaconic boosters along the route, with the largest contingent at the comer of First Ave. & 61st Street.

The post-race party at the Mayflower was well attended with lots of food and refreshments to help the halt and lameto replenish lost carbos.

The happy party goers turned into stranded passengers when they were left high and dry without buses at LincolnCenter at the appointed hour. It seems our drivers were under the misguided notion that they were to pick us up at the parkexit at 79th Street and Central Park West. In due course, and after a short search, the wayward buses were located and broughtback to the Lincoln Center rendezvous.

Below are the times of the Taconics 1 am aware of, there are some times missing, if you call me I'll be sure to include(hem in the next newsletter.New York City Marathon ResultsA m i s s o n , To m 3 : 3 5 : 1 4 Handelman, Joe 5 : 1 0 : 4 3 Noel. Cheryl 5 : 3 0 : 0 9

"Runners get set. . .GO!" My heart leaps as I spring forward. Try to runsmooth. Did the course just veer to the right? Oh, No! I'm off the course! Get back ontrack. Left arm. right leg. Right arm, left leg. What's going on here? It's as if I've

forgotten how to run. Why am I so clumsy? 1 usually have goodform during trainingruns. Why can't 1 generate any speed? It's as if I'm running through Jello. What'sthat? Hurdles? What are hurdles doing here? This is supposed to be a fast course.

A blare of music jolts me back into consciousness, and I lay there staring atthe glowing red numbers on my alarm clock: 6:00. Another pre-race anxiety dream. As 1 blearily drag myself to the shower, I try to let reality seep back in. The lOK is thisSunday. THE race. The one 1 gave up a marathon for. My goal is to run a personalbest lOK. 1 should have happened long ago, but bad weather, poor preparation, and anuntimely injury left my PR where it has stood for a year and a half. Now, there is onlyone fast lOK left to the season, and I'm nervous.

I have a history of letting my nerves get to me. My best races were the ones 1convinced myself 1 didn't care about. When I put pressure on myself, 1 usually choke. It seems I'm doing everything possible to sabotage this effort.

On the drive to work, 1 rehearse the race for the umpteenth time. Mile 1: tryto relax, get into your rhythm quickly. Don't go out too fast. Mile 2: adjust the pace, try to stay smooth. Mile 3: should be in your rhythm now. Try to be relaxed at thehalf-way point. Mile 4; time to start making your move. Mile 5: quicken yourturnover. Mile 6: whatever you've got left, let 'er rip!to return. Today is going to be another stressful day. I'll just try to concentrate on the

Membership ReportCompiled by Joanna Nash

(Please remember to check your mailing label to see when your membership is up.)

N e w M e m b e r s :

Andy and Franne Ballin both run. One in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Fran's favorite race is the L'eggs Mini-Marathon (Now the Advil).Robert Briglio likes to run the Boston and NYCity Marathons. He would like to run a sub 2:40 marathon. (Taconic is organizing agroup to qualify for the 1996 Boston Marathon. There are also Saturday morning as well as many other training groups during theweek. We'll be looking for Robert.)Robert Daubenbis started running just recently. He runs locally in the evening. (If you need any help/encouragement in yourtraining, Robert, or want any company running, there are many Taconic runners in your area with a wealth of knowledge. We hope tosee you at the next club meeting.)Herb Flechter enjoys running the Croton Reservoir. (We hope to see you there Saturday mornings at 7:30 for the group runs! Besure to introduce yourself. We park at the pumphouse.)Ted Kletnick and Family enjoy running the Hastings Trukey Trot! (See results in this issue.) We're hoping Ted will join theTaconic's 50's Men's Team. Please contact Rich Nash about joining this strong group.Robert A. McAulay started running in June of this year. (His street address matches that of several other Taconics').George W. Mrus runs in Waveny Park, New Canaan. His favorite race is the Philadelphia distance run (but judging by this issue's"Other Races" column, he runs many races.. .and well!)Peter Prime sounds like he is currently recovering from an injury. He enjoys running, primarily cross-country.Stephen Riehl runs for the JFK High School Track Team. We wish him good luck at school and welcome him to Taconic. (Be sureto send your race results to "Other Places" in care of the TRL editor for inclusion in future newsletters.)Donna M. Sangiuolo just started running in July and has already finished Jan Peek! (What a race to start with?!) She has not set anyrunning goals yet, but sounds like a candidtate for the Women's Master's Team. We encourage her to contact Lee Saroken.Christopher Willcox began running 10 years ago and his favorite race is the NYCity Marathon.

Locais Win Mixed Masters Category At Cape Cod MarathonBy Dave Farquar

The Four Quail Team (Paul and Ed Warren, Nancy Laun and John Collins) - the team without equal - scurriedpast the opposition (mixed up fem and friends) in the last leg to repeat as Mixed Masters Champions at the Cape CodMarathon Relay on October 30 at Falmouth, Mass. Complaints of injuries and "lack of practice" added up to a modest3:13:02 clocking.. .good enough to squeak first and improve by nearly a minute on Three Quail last year.

There were about 600 individual marathon entries (including Taconic's Katy Dady Quinn and her brother PatDady of Minnesota) and over 200 relay teams competing at Cape Cod on a brilliant, but rather warm (75 degrees on theroad!) day, October 30. The team "4 a Finish," composed of Taconic's Steve Quinn and his daughter Heather's twoBoston College friends, Maura and Jessica (Heather would have been #4 but for an injury) were among the Four Quail'scompetition.

This is a challenging course (lots of hills), but you can't beat the scenery and hospitality. If you're looking for aquiet Fall Marathon, give this one a try.

Mitzi RepeatsAs Veteran's Day 5K

ChampBy Anthony Galfano

Dave Mitzi bettered his winning time of last year by 5 seconds, running to his second consecutive first place finish in 15:35 this year

on the 5K course at the Veteran's Hospital in Montrose. Greg Diamond ran a strong race, finishing second in 17:00.The third place winner was 17 year old Paul Fritzsche of Briarcliff Manor, finishing 9 seconds behind Diamond.Fritzsche's time is also the all-time fastest on this course in his age group.

The women's winners included a stellar performance by a young runner, too. Sixteen year old Kasey Fava oiChappaqua took the gold with a time of 21:46. Kathleen Lyons was second with a 22:29 finish, followed closely byLaurie Goldin, a previous course winner, finishing in 22:31 this year.

We were pleased to have 12 cadets from West Point join us this year. They stayed after the race to visit withthe patients, which was an added treat. One of the cadets. Sheri Bemal, won the women's veteran's trophy with a 27:12finish. Other special awards were as follows:First World War 11 Veteran: John Bates, age 71* 23:02First Vietnam Era Veteran: Kevin Lowry, age 47 19:24First Persian Gulf War Veteran: Dave O'Toole, age 47 21:40First Pol ice Officer: Hector Maldonado, age 39 18:44F i r s t F i r e fi g h t e r : A n t h o n y C o l a v i t o , 3 9 2 2 : 2 8♦Special note: 6 men age 60-69 and 3 men age 70-79 completed this year's race.

As always, thanks to the loyal TRRC volunteers who helped make this year's event a success!

By Steve QuinnEveryone attending this year's dinner dance received a ballot to vote for their favorite race and favorite T-shirt. How

would you have voted? The wonder if the tally would have been different if the vote had been taken in the middle of July instead of in November.

(Note that singlets and white, short-sleeved T-shirts are popular then, but the colored, long-sleeved versions had increased appealthis time of year.) The results were:F A V Q R J T E R A C E F A V O R I T E T - S H I R T1 . S Y B I L L U D I N G T O N R A C E & R E L A Y 1 . C H A L L E N G E O F T H E S E V E N H I L L S2 . B I A T H L O N 2 . S Y B I L L U D I N G T O N3 . H U M A N R A C E ( t i e ) 3 . R A C E F O R M Y R A3. CHALLENGE OF THE SEVEN HILLS (tie)

Some interesting notes: The Dutchess County Classic received 1 vote. It is not even a Taconic Race, though it should be.(I think Irv Miller's attendance at the demce had something to do with the vote. He would have won "best dressed" if we'd voted onthat!)

The Sybil Ludington Race and the Challenge of the Seven Hills won awards in both categories, although barely 25 peoplerun either race. Come on people, if these are your favorite races let's get training! We have the Sybil race in only 4 months. (Racedirector Dave Farquar has included a map of the course in this newsletter so you can start planning your strategy.) Moffit challengeseveryone to beat him in this event. We ran the Seven Hills race on the Sunday after the dinner dance and only 24 people showed up.1 guess that says some would rather vote for a race than run it. Interesting. I think the people that voted and didn't run are definitelys m a r t e r .

Finally, the Race for Myra shirt got a lot of votes. This shirt recognized Taconic Participation in the Race for the Cure andhonored the memory of Myra Adamski, a beautiful shirt for a beautiful lady.

RUNNERS OF THE YEAR, 1995In 1995. the laconic Road Runners Club will once again award Runner of the Year awards to the best male and female

runners in the club. This will be determined by a vote of the Board of Directors, plus a selected group of members who have had tiiemost race experience duringl995, and therefore are most familiar with the qualifications of the group of runners nominated to win.

In the 1994 Grand Prix, participation was low and excitement was lacking. A good part of the reason for this, was the largenumber of conflicts between team events put on by the NYRRC and TRRC events. Many great perfonnances were put in by TRRCrunners at these NYRRC events. These runners were running for the TRRC team - and giving up a chance to be considered for ourG r a n d P r i x .

This year, 1995, runners' entire running accomplishments for the year will be considered. This will include club and non-club races. A list of runners and their race results for 1995 will be compiled based on nominations. These can be self-nominationsor nominations of fellow runners. Overall and age group winners will be selected.

Year-end summaries will not be sent out this year, but expect them next year. All Taconic races in the database maintainedby Greg Diamond. If you would like to add additional race results to this data base, or if you would like to make sure we have yourresults for consideration as Runner of the Year, please use the following format (photocopy and use during year):

CONQUER "7 HILLS"By Ed McLaughlin

November 20th was the date for the third running of the Legendary Challenge of the Seven Hills. I he turn-out for theevent shows the spectacular growth in the popularity of hill climbing. There was a 71% increase in the number of starters, with100% of the entrants completing the 5.95 mile challenge (Nike Lutrick also loured the course, however she was not officiallyentered.)

Greg Diamond led the way up each of the hilLs. setting records on five of the seven hills. Greg's overall lime was 44:12. anaverage of 7:26 per mile. There is no overall course record because we have changed the course each year.

This year's "Queen of the Hills" was a repeat winner. Lee Sarokcn. Lee set records on each of the Seven Hills, completingthe test in 55:44. an average pace of 9:22 per mile. Lee finished 9th overall in the field of 24. Biff Roldan was a mere 12 secondsb e h i n d .

We were very fortunate to once again have the support of volunteers to drive the runners from hill to hill and to score theevent. Thanks to Steve Quinn. Joanna Nash. Susan Poet and Norma Selukiekin.

Each finisher and volunteer received a limited edition long sleeved shirt (voted best T-shirt at the Dinner Dance.) Our"King" and "Queen" have had their names inscribed on the permanent trophies along with prior year's winners: Tony Galfano. ScottAbercrombie. and Debbie Yagoda. These trophies will remain with the winners for the year, and will be retired when the inscriptionplate is full, (this will not happen in our lifetimes.)

1994 Age-Group Cross Country SeriesBy John Hallinan

A good group of enthusiastic youngsters turned out for this year's version of the Age Group Cross CountrySeries. We even had a relatively large showing for the adult races, except for the last one. (Okay, so it was the sameday as the NYCity Marathon. . .but our race was shorter.)

Thanks, once again, to the precise calculations of Gene "the human wheel" Cadman, the courses were accurate,(Sorry. Harry .) and will remain so thanks to our newly created maps.

Kudos to the good folks at the Peekskill Cortlandt Running Foundation for picking up the cost of the championship jackets and some of the awards. Also, many thanks to the TRRC crew and parents for helping out at the always-chaotic Finish.

Keith Panzer CompletesM a r a t h o n To u r

By Sarah CollinsIt is a major accomplishment for any runner to

complete two or three marathons a year.Congratulations to Taconic Road Runner, Keith Panzer, who completed EIGHTEEN MARATHONS in 1994.His biggest accomplishment came this Fail when he setout to do nine marthons in nine successive week-ends.

Keith couldn't stop at nine. The week after the ninth, hestill had the marathon bug and travelled to Philadelphiaf o r h i s t e n t h !

This past Spring, Keith was able to completethree consecutive marathons: Boston, Yonkers andLong Island. After three, he didn't feel bad at all! Lastsummer, when he started receiving Fall marathonapplications, he realized that the nine he wanted to dofell in nine consecutive weeks. We all knew that if

anyone could do this, it would be Keith! The week before the New York City Marathon,

Kei th was in terv iewed on WCBS-FM rad io . When hewas asked how he felt, his reply was "Great...in fact, 1recover faster after each marathon!"

When asked about his plans for next year.Keith says it was a great experience, but he doubts hewill do eighteen again. "What will happen this Springwhen the marathon bug starts to bite again???)Kei th Panzer - Mara thon Resu l ts - 19941 / 1 6 Disney Marathon 2 : 5 8 : 2 9

TRRC WOMEN'S MASTERS FINISHS E C O N D

By Lee SarokenThe last two events of the NYRRC club championship series were the NYC Marathon and the Hot Chocolate 10 miler.

Although the official results are not yet in for either race, the Taconic Women's Masters team appears to have captured second placebehind Millrose AA. TRRC had 100 points to Millrose's 129 going into the NYC Marathon, a double point scoring event.

The Taconic NYC Marathon team was comprised of Lauren Logan, Judy Singlak, and me. We held our ground, but theMillrose lead was more than we could overcome.

In the 10 mile event, I was joined by Erika Abraham, Kate Glynn and Melanie Benvenue. It was a very strong showing, wemay have edged out Millrose on the day, but it won't be quite enough to improve on second place for the series.

I want to thank all the women who participated in the series this year. You carried the Taconic banner proudly, our teamgrew stronger as the year progressed. The 1995 series begins with the Northwind lOK in January, followed by the Snowflake 4 milerin February. The March event will be the Brooklyn Half. Any Taconic women who would like to help us field teams for these eventsshould contact me at 741-2408. It really is a lot of fun and participation at any level helps the team score. If you come, you willcount. There have been a number of events where we really had to scramble to get one more woman just to complete a scoring team.

The core group of women's masters members, with the addition of a few Taconic open women, notably Sarah Collins, alsoscored in the Women's Open "B" division amassing enough points to win first place, a pleasant surprise.

A number of Taconics will be attending the NYRRC Club Night in February where the series awards will be presented, anyclub members planning to attend should call me so we can organize a TRRC table.

1 hope your holidays are fabulous - Happy New Year to everyone!

NYRRC GRAND PRIX MASTER'S TEAME X C E L S I N I T ' S I N A U G U R A L S E A S O N

By Rich NashIn mid-April 1994, TRRC was made awzu-e of a split in the Master's division with the 50's+ team having their own group

scored separately. Having missed the first three races of the season, and not knowing if we had eligibility for the fourth race, (scoringnext to last), TRRC decided to foster an organized team of 20 members. Ten enthusiasts anchored us in our first race. So, ask mehow we did!?! The strong 50's team scored 1st through 6th in our age division at the Roosevelt Island lOK. Our members grew toover 30 by the Club Team Championships late in July. However, we fell to Milrose AA by the slimmest of margins.. .a tie break! IBy the end of August, we topped out with 36 members, winning the Back To Work easily with our strength in numbers. Team resultsfor the NYCity Marathon haven't been released yet, but I believe we placed fairly well, as we did in our last race of the season, thePete McArdle 15K, finishing first, taking team positions one to four.

TRRC and 1 would like to thank the following 50's+ team members for their effort, support, perseverance, camaraderie,training programs and war stories this past season.J a c k B r e n n a n B o b D a v i s R u d i E i n h o m B o b F u r p h y R o g e r C o c k i n gL e o G o r m l e y J o e H a n d e l m a n J a c k M a g r o n e E d M c C a r t h y P e t e r M e i s l e rF r a n k M e s s m a n I r v M i l l e r D i c k M u r p h y R o b i n s o n O r t i z M a r c O x m a nC a r m e l c R o l d a n W o l f g a n g S a n d e r H o w i e S o l o w D o n V i l l e n e u v e D a v i d W e l l a r dJ a m e s W h e l a n R i c h a r d N a s hIf you would like to be part of Taconic's 50's team for the 1995 season, please give me. By Dave O'TooleThis year's cross country relay enjoyed balmy

December weather, which is unusual for this race.

However, the course itself "oozed" from the previousday's rain and made for a good muddy mess.

Thanks again to Brian Wheaton, Dan Caffrey,Pete and Peg Meisler for course layout. Brian informedall participants that the course included three water stopsbut they weren't for drinking. At least one of theparticipants stopped at one of the water stations, but heexplained that this was the result of tripping on a rock andlanding face first in one of the local brooks.

This year's race fielded ten teams including threewomen's teams.

Winning the men's race was the relay team named "ThreeToms & Doug" in a time of 1:29:12. The Masterscategor>' was taken by "Gene's Machine" with a time of1:39:07. In the women's category, "Dan's Dames" won in

a new course record of 1:32:22.The race was followed by a pancake, bagel and

donut breakfast, and prizes included favorite cookies andmuffins from the Daily Bagel. Everyone enjoyedthemselves and promised to come back for more abusenext year. Special thanks to all the volunteers who madethis race a success.

T H E A LT E R N AT I V E2 P E R S O N R E L AY

By Ed McLaughlinI find it amazing that most runners severely limit

their racing diets to 5K's, 5 milers, and lOK's when theycould just as easily be participating in some really uniquerunning experiences. One of those unique opportunitiesrecently slipped by all but ten Taconics this past weekend.I refer to the alternative Two Person Relay. Please don't beconfused, this is not the Couples' Relay which shares thesame race date, it is the point-to-point race which coversapproximately 20 miles starting at Teatown Reservation andending at Blue Mountain Trail Lodge.

The Two Person Relay has a start and a finish anda number of intermediate checkpoints along the way. Therules, such as they are, are simple. One team member mustbe on the road (or trail) at all times, reach each checkpointin the specified order, but use any route you like, run anydistance that suits.

Five teams toed the line (actually there was no startline) after a pre-race huddle in which the original coursewas modified to eliminate one of the checkpoints (there wasreason to believe that the rickety old railway bridge over theCroton Dam may have been a little too slippery to chance anearly morning crossing.)

At the start, runners headed in different directionsto the first checkpoint, the trailhead for the "Green" trail onBlinn Road. This leg is a pretty straight forward run fromTeatown out to Blinn to the trailhead. From here, choiceswere made: most opted to reverse their tracks back up Blinnto enter the woods just past Journey's End Road. Onerunner proceeded directly into the woods on the Green trail.Their mission was to climb to the top of Bald Mountain foran eye opening view of the Croton reservoir (on a clearerday the Manhattan skyline is visible from here.)

The next stop is a very familiar Taconic haunt, thePump House at Gate House Bridge. The direct route fromthe summit of Bald Mountain is a combination of trails, bushwhacking and dirt roads. Most of the runnersnegotiated Bald Mountain without much difficulty, howeverone took a wrong turn on the trails and ended upbushwhacking both the ascent and decent. With theelimination of the checkpoint at the intersection of Routes100 and 134, the top of Turkey Mountain was the nextobjective.

From the Pump House, the runners headed out ontoRoute 129 to Route 118, made a left, proceeded to theentrance to Turkey Mountain park, to the white trail up toTurkey Mountain. Turkey Mountain is a fairly steep climb, but there's a great view of Yorktown and Croton from thetop. Following the trail down, a bushwhacking detour isnecessary through the woods to bring the runners to the

powerlines, which provides the route out to UnderbillAvenue, a very steep rocky downhill run.

The next portion of the relay is not for thefainthearted, as the most direct route involves a short runalong, and then a crossing of, the Taconic State Parkway, toarrive at the Driving Range building on the Mohansic GolfCourse, another checkpoint.

The next destination is the high point on the AT&Tcable right-of-way which is at the top of DickensonMountain (affectionately known as "Keg Hill" by some ofthe locals.) Teams chose different routes from the golfcourse which afforded at least one team the opportunity towander around the golf course for some time (half an hour)trying to find the shortcut out to Hunterbrook Road. Otherteams opted to back-track and stick to the roads (safe, fast, but alas, boring).

The climb to the high point essentially meanschoosing between two routes, a straight steep run directlyup the right-of-way from Croton Avenue (part of DanCaffrey's famous "Tick Run" course) or the more circuitous, but gentler graded route following the "Keg Hill" markers.Neither was particularly easy going as the recent rains hadturned the always rocky footpaths into soggy rivulets, thissection generally turns runners into climbers again. Asadvertised in the race flyer for this relay, one actually getsa view of the Hudson River from the top. There's anothernice (breakneck) downhill coming off this peak followingthe right-of-way out to Furnace Dock Road.

A short toodle along Watch Hill Road brings therunners to the last climb of the day, Mt. Spitzenberg.Entering Blue Mountain Reservation, and following thewhite trail up, Mt. Spitzenberg's payoff is the best panoramaof the day, a spectacular view of the Hudson River atPeeksk i l l .

Coming off Mt. Spitzenberg, the runners can smellthe pancakes that await them at the fmish, a mere two milesaway. Down the white trail to the red trail, try not to getlost around the pond again, then on to Trail Lodge.

This year's finishers:1. Nick Caswell & Gene Cadman2. Debbie Terranova & Scott Abercrombie3. John Hallinan & Tony Galfano4. Dan Caffrey & Brian Wheaton5. Lee Saroken & Ed McLaughlin

L e e : A n I n s p i r a t i o n f o r R e d e c o r a t i o n

To the Editor:In a recent issue of New England Runner, Jim

Coombs of the Cape Cod Athletic Club noted in thesection "Club Notes" that "Too many races leads to toomuch demand for limited resources." This was inreference to the 26 races held on Cape Cod and theIslands. That was in 1991. The whole article was inreference to a question of quality vs. quantity in the evergrowing world of road races.

In the few years I have been involved with thelocal road racing scene, I have noticed an ever increasingnumber of races that can be run on any given week-end. Itis nice to be able to run in different races in different areas, but the effect on the high quantity of races is a decrease inthe number of runners and also a decrease in the quality ofan event. There are three ways I see we can directly solvethis problem.

The first idea is one we have already startingusing: In regard to too many conflicting races, we try todo some scheduling with the NYRRC. The problem is thatthe NYRRC races are only taking a few of the localrunners from us. A larger number of the local runners aregoing to Connecticut and other local areas. Maybe weshould consult with these clubs (Threads & Treads inGreenwich, Track & Trail in Danbury, and other localclubs). These are the clubs we should be doing schedulingwith to avoid conflicts.

The second idea is to permanently cancel some ofour races and build on the quality of the remaining events. We could easily take multi-event days like the St. Patrick's10K/2M and the Putnam Classic 8M/2M and use sponsorsfrom smaller events to increase the quality of the events. And in regard to trying to find volunteers for a largerevent, we should make use of the employees of thesponsoring companies. We could also use groups like theBoy Scouts and the Girl Scouts in the area. They need toearn their community service badges, after all.

The third idea is to alter some low key or smallerevents to be even lower key events. Instead of holding arace that uses public roads, move the clock to a lace likeFDR park and hold a time trial. We set up a clock andstart it running at a given time. We could let it run for anhour and people could do a 5K, lOK or 15K time trial. Wewouldn't have to score them or feed them and they stillhave a race situation (themselves against the clock).Another way we could do this is to replace Spring andSummer events with track meets (like the Summer Series)and Fall events with more cross country events.

I don't know if any one of these ideas will behelpful to our club, but maybe we should consider them.

Dear Friends at Taconic,The redecoration of my living room had not been

planned until next year, but now I realize it'll have to bedone much sooner to accommodate the beautiful GrandPrix Clock on the mantle piece, as suggested by Katy.Little did she know that my fireplace is surrounded by abrick wall - no mantle piece; any redecoration ideas?

Although I had kind of planned to increase myrunning activities this year, the award was totallyunexpected. Actually, I had mostly concentrated on theMasters Women's Team races in NYC and owe it totally toLee Saroken to have "Kept me on my toes" (wouldn't youlike to have the BIG HAND of my clock?!?) Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lee, for having made hundreds ofphone calls to arrange for sufficient participation andluxurious transportation. I'm sure without Lee's charm wewouldn't have found half of the chauffeurs!!! And withoutthe support from you all, the clock would certainly standon a real mantle piece, and I wouldn't have to worry aboutredeco ra t i on .

Thanks a lot for getting me into this trouble...I'll be back for more...it's been real fun!All the best,

Kate M. GlynnP.S. 1 used to say "Happy Landings" but from hereon, I'llhave to change it to "Happy Running to You'all."

Injured?? There is help!By Nick Caswell

Injured? Borderline injured? Recoveringfrom an injury? Tired of being injured? Well, thereis an answer. One, educate yourself about your injuryand, two, rest the damn thing. Simple. Always was, always will be.

I damaged myself three times during the lastthree years. This isn't surprising since I race virtuallyevery weekend. But I think I'm learning - even thoughI did it three times. But if I had ignored the warnings, the number of injuries would have been closer tothirty. That's ten a year! Crazy? Maybe.

In June '92,1 raced 4 miles in Central Park inracing flats and, instead of doing a recovery run inheavier shoes, I did a tempo run (with BTW) withoutchanging my shoes. Result: a strained Achillestendon. Ice and massage were duly applied. Fourdays later I was able to run again - but not in racingflats for at least a month.

In late September of that year I damaged myhamstring at the Philipstown lOK. I rested a week andI w a s O K .

Finally, in October of this year, I raced 5miles in racing flats the day after a hard 14 miletraining run with Tom Church. Result: I damaged myAchilles tendon again. So, I rested and stretched thetendon continuously. I even tested it, but continued to

rest it for three weeks. And again, I was able to run. Sure I lost some

conditioning, but I was running, albeit slower. Andthree weeks later (six weeks total), I PR'd over 1 OK.

Now, about this education thing. Joe Ellis'Running Injury-Free (1994) is an oversimplified bookfor some, but it has its place. It is helpful for theinexperienced runner. David Costill's Inside Running:Basics of Sports Phvsiologvn986) is more thoroughand, dare I say it, more demanding.

So, here are two recommendations...but readthem, just don't buy them. If you know what to lookfor, you are half-way there. Reading the numerousmonthly magazines and periodicals currently availablewill also keep you informed. If you find the time toread when you are running, you will not end up in thatpredicament of not being able to run, but having thetime to read. But, if you are not running and you arenot reading, well, I don't know what to say. At leastyou read this article.

And discuss your injury with your runningfriends. There is a lot of knowledge within the club -as I found out this summer.

Bottom line: keep running and reading; stayinformed about what you are doing. See you at theraces in '95 .

After a year as editor of laconic RunningLife. I am finding satisfaction in completion of eachissue but FRUSTRATION over gathering materialfor the newsletter.

Please, please, please! Help me get out apaper you want to read by getting me material in atimely manner.

The newsletter comes out in January, March, May, July, September, and November. The deadline formaterial is the club meeting in the month preceding publication. Please don't ask me "When do you need it?"!That's when I need it. You can either give it to me at the meeting, deliver it to me at my house or office or mail it to me:43 Rodcris Drive. Mahopac, NY 10541. My home telephone number is (914) 628-0648. My office FAX is (914) 232-1865 (compliments of Michael McEntee. , .thank you!)

I am using Word Perfect 6.0 for Windows and Aldus Pagemaker for Windows. If you have a computer andcan enter the info on a 3.5in. disc that can be read by either of the above formats, it helps me immensely to receive thematerial on disc.

I love getting photographs and try to include as many as possible, (I do need to be able to crop (cut) them tofit) It is helpful if you can identify who is in each photo and at what event it was taken, so 1 can put appropriate copywith each photo.A T T E N T I O N R A C E . D I R E C T O R S :

Flyers for TRRC races are to be pre-approved by the TRRC Board. (This is important for insurance purpose.s,especially now with recent RRCA requirements,) Please get me information on your races NOW.
