T h e R e d L o b s t e r 1 0 k C l a s s i c i s t h e s i t e o f t h e W o m e n ' s R o a d W o r l dRecord, set in 40 degree weather on the urban Orlando course. But flatas it was, high temperatures and near 100% humidity made this year's racea steamer for the laconic Racing Team Women. A new American record byLynn Jennings (31:06) and John Halverson's tactical victory overall, aswell as gritty efforts by our team, made the day memorable for al l ofus. Of course, so did the sunburns. There was even talk of choosing anAlaskan race next year.

Sti l l , the Women earned the Open Team Division Trophy as theybatt led their way to fine performances al l around. Lor i Jorgensen ledthe winning effort with a time of 35:37, good enough for 16th overall andthird place in her age group. Mary Panell i Lund took fifth in that agegroup, 33rd overal l with a 38:26. Joan Deitr ick ran a strong 39:09 tocomplete the team scoring. Colleen Law ran a 42:48, rounding out thet e a m .

No one should get the impression that this team didn't have anyfun, though. At the post race party in beautiful Church Street Station, our hosts showed us a good time. Lori and Colleen shared their dancingeuphoria with anyone who would join in, and there seemed to be many.EPCOT took on the team with a vengeance and we all somehow ended up inMorocco one night.

What happens when seven runners share a condo in Kissimee? Welearned a lot about each other...When not battered by renegade ducks ormunching on rice cakes, the team donned lime green leopard tights andat t racted at tent ion wherever they went . The male counterparts of theteam: Bob Lund, Rich Mattey, and Bernie Dietrick, provided a pre-racedinner extraordinare! The men also ran the race, but I 'm afraid you' l lhave to ask them for their times by yourself! They were joined by RonHerreid, Steve Levine, Pete Corsino, and Roy Zeib on the tourist side ofthe expedition.

As a team, we rea l ly want to thank Tacon ic fo r g iv ing us theopportunity to represent the club at Red Lobster and are thrilled that wecould bring home a championship the first time out. The competition willbe stiffer at Freihofer's Run for Women 5k in May (the next team effort),but weMl do our best to make the home team crowd - proud!

DUBLIN MARATHON, October 31, 1989

b y : J a c k B r e n n a n

Marathon Day is cool (45 - 50' ' ) and overcast, absolutely perfect for me.There are an announced 9000 starters and it is congenial pandemonium, noest imated pace signs or the l ike, only one area for over 3:30 est imates andanother for those under that. I had an eleven minute first mile last year,so I posi t ion mysel f about where I expect to p lace. The marathon star ts ontime with the usual hooting and hollering and mugging for the cameras (Hi, Mum!!)The course is less hilly than previous years and a large, friendly crowd fullof great faces encourages the runners. The guy dressed as a head hunter isthere again th is year, he*s great to run next to because of the crowd react ionhe gets, especially from the kids. I see kids with their palms out and amabout to "give them five" when I notice the chocolate covered caramels theyare offering. The marathoners follow the usual pattern of jovality, quietude,s e r i o u s n e s s , g r i m n e s s a n d d e s p a i r .

My own comes out better than expected. I pretty much hold on to a 6:45 pacefor the 1st 24 and only t i re badly the last two mi les. Any marathoner cang u t o u t t w o m i l e s , a n d I b r i n g i n a 2 : 5 8 : 0 3 . T h e y h a v e h o t t e a a n d c h o c o l a t ebars in the finish area, and a potatoe (you know what they say, "This spud'sfor you.") Only John sort of regerts having promised to meet Dennis at thepub (a hot bath being now more appealing). But anyhoo, can't leave him hangingso off i t is to 0 'Donahugue's ( a famous Dubl in Pub) . Dennis beats me thereand i s bes ide h imse l f w i th joy. An I r i sh mus ica l g roup le ts h im p lay thetin whistle, which was warmly received. He was happy with a 3:15 done onv e r y l i t t l e t r a i n i n g .

Have you ever heard an OOMPAH band play traditional Irishmusic? It ain't pretty!! Three times during the evening, they brought outan Elvis impersonator, that's right, an Elvis impersonator backed by an Oompahband. The final blow came when they asked the audience to goose-step acrossthe dance floor (I'm NOT making this up!). Jokingly dubbed the Easter Alternative, the club's annual Boston Alternative lOK race and 2 mile fun run wentoif on schedule on a rainy Easter monmg in FDR Park.Club president John Hallinan's considerable efforts toavoid the conflict between Easter and the Boston Alternative were of no use as the Pope refused to move Easter.Nor was His Holiness present at the race. It was rumoredthat he was getting ready for Boston.

Forty-seven runners toured FDR Park in the lOK event, with Michael Sekulski first to cross the finish line in 35:18.Second place went to Frank Gali. Taconic's Greg Diamond garnered some appreciative cheers as he came inthird with 36:45. Stacey Wistrand was the fastest womanof the day, turning in a 48:04.

Masters men did very well, taking 4th and 5th placesoverall. Bruce Snyder's 37:33 beat out Jack Brennan's38:34 for first master. Leo Gormley was third. FrankMessmann was victorious in the 50-d9 division. Frank's42:15 just beat out Wolfgang Sander's 42:22.

The Cappiellos took home top awards in their respectivedivisions - A1 in the 60+ and Audrey and the 50-59.

In the "fun run" there was a bit of a duel between PeteCorsino and Joe Ferrusi. Pete took off at his usual rabbit'space and Joe took off after him. Some of us at the startingline wondered if Joe knew what he was getting into. Petewas the victor in 10:56, and Joe hung on to finish secondin 11:04. At two opposite ends of the age spectrum, JimHamilton and 12-year old Dan Geppert (here fromMichigan to visit his aunt) ran through the course together. Younger brother Dennis Geppert (his thoughtsprobably on chocolate Easter bunnies) breezed throu^the two miles in 15:39, finishing third.

Afterwards there was a lively awards ceremony withplenty of liquid refreshment. And we hear that JohnHallinan is already trying to contact the Pope. He wantsto make sure that they don't schedule Easter on the daybefore Boston next year!
