BURDETT, SIMUNBK SHINE AT ST. PATS Francis Burdett and Laurie Simunek led the way in this year's running of the St. Patrick's Day lOK. While there may have been no trip to Ireland( or Dublin, Ohio for that matter) offered as an incentive, close to 300 runners turned out in weather more suited to the Iditarod. Burdett's time of 33:21 beat out a fast eld which included Steve Calidonna and Moses Matsebula, who nished second and third. On the woman's side, Laurie followed up her sweep of the Freezer Fives with an impressive showing, out-pacing Kathleen Ford and Mary Tolson. Many Taconic regulars( irregulars ?)came out of hibernation in spite of the weather to take part in what is often considered Taconic's version of "opening day". The two miler saw Gary Steinel and Mike Cosset battling it out for one and two, while Scott Mendelowitz was just behind. Absent with cause was our computer guru, Greg Diamond, who had to forgo the race when a power glitch wiped out much of his time-consuming labor just prior to the start. Fortunately, Greg was able to quickly reload the information so that the results could be tabulated. Thanks, Greg While there are numerous volunteers to thank, none comes to mind more quickly than Jim "Pyro-Man" McDermott, who actually paid attention to his early Boy Scout training and kept the rest of us warm. Special kudos, too, to those intrepid volunteers who so magnanimously gave their time, energy and livers after( in some cases, well after)the race was over in order to make sure that nothing perishable(potable) was left behind. What a club Results on pages 8 and 9.

After much contemplation, I have come to the conclusion thatthe reason I have not been receiving the illustrious laconicNewsle t te r i s the US Posta l Serv ice 's fau l t fo r misp lac ing myrenewal check and application Cas well as my sub 6 minute pacelOK results?)!! ! ! ! OK, in truth, my dog ate the renewal. Sohere's my renewal. Pepper Cmy dog) apologizes and asks that yousend me the latest newsletter at your earliest convenience!

After a nagging 1ower leg injury that took me awhile toachieve, I have"found new ways to get injured immediately with nodoubt to the cause, (only kidding) My new outlet during my roadI;,-, rerovery has been Mcuntain Biking! I perf'_'rmed my firstcompetition April 6 in East Hampton, Connecticut (it was also my4th time on the new wheels) and placed 1st in my categ_'ry(beginner/women)1 What a blast? there must have been over 200competitors with the majority of us having no idea what toexpect! I was surprised to find myself, more than once Juggingup inclines with my bike over my shoulder (I knew XC-Running wasgood for something)!! I always wanted to own a dirt bike? Iguess th is i s the c loses t I w i l l come!

Another fi rs t fo r the "new" c ross t ra in ing techn ique was theGreenwich Biathlon I completed this morning. It entailed a2 1/2 mile run, 10 mile bike, 2 1/2 mile run. My goal was tojust complete the course until I found myself top five after thefirst run (I almost thought I might have a chance at placing). The problem came with the transitions and my high tech cliplesspedals. Each transition took me over two minutes to complete, hence an additional four minutes to my overall time and a lot offrustration so back to the main goal of completing course!!Nancy Tacka, another laconic member, zoomed by me about half waythrough the bike, and I spent the rest of the race staring at herb a c k . " G o o d J o b N a n c y ! ! ! ! ^

Cross-training seems to be working? the key is to partake inactivities that are enjoyable. Each time my coach asks how myrecovery is going, I tell him I am doing a lot of biking. He, inturn, continues to express that I should be spending more time inthe pool. If I took his advice, I probably would have quitparticipating in everything; I find swimming quite boring, and Istill haven't found an efficient way to swim and talk at thes a m e t i m e ! ^ i a .

Well as soon as the semester ends, I hope to be able tospend more time with my Taconic friends! See you soon.

You know how it is when you're not ready to race, butone of your friends says 'come on' so you go, just call ita training run, tack on a few miles before so you have agood excuse to run a slow time, only when you get thereyou feel like you're in a race, so it's pedal to the metal andforty seconds a mile off what it feels like? You don't getthe trophy you got last time, but you sure feel just as exhausted. But you're glad you went. You're hanging outin the car before the start, changing clothes, trying to keepwarm, three or four of you steaming up the windows, andafter, the mile-by-mtle critique (or post-mortem). It's likea party with only the relatives you like.

St. Pat: Too cold. Too windy. Too many people aheadof me. That hilly loop is nasty enough the first time. Idon't want to run it again. I'm not ready for it. Wait tilln e x t w e e k .

Mudders: I'm not ready. Wait till next week. Conditions appropriately adverse. Oh, we're just asking for asprained anlde. The terrain is not only inhospitable, butconstantly changing from one yard to the next. Deepsnow. Ice. Mud. Some actual road.(Yes!) The meltawaytrail markings were neat. I checked out the size of the fieldand hoped the markings wouldn't melt away before I gotthere. Seemed like twice as many discomfort-seeking,Iditarod waimabes as last year. Another trophy recedingfrom my grasp. My overtired quads stopped being a partof my body by half way. I chased two older gentlemen tono avail over the big bump, across the field and up the lasthill. I kept two of my favorite training partners waitingeight and twelve minutes, and waited three minutes foranother. (Not last! Not last!) WE ate bagels and drankbeer. I loved the Calvin and Hobbes shirts.
