Cockell and Syrinxto release onBernie Finklestein has movedfull ahead into the recording in-dustry and this time he's spreadhimself out so well he could justkeep the ball rolling.He first made the scene, this timearound, with Bruce Cockburn, nownicely on his way with a TrueNorth single "Going To The Coun-try" dnd album. Next, and shapingup as a group to keep an eye on,is Luke and The Apostles, whohave just released their singlewith a follow-up album.Almost completed is his next ven-ture, John Mills-Cockell, who to-gether with Doug Pringle, hornman, and drummer John Wells formthe group Syrinx.The Toronto Telegram's PeterGoddard did a piece on this trioin the Aug. 1st editions and ex-plained the secret of Syrinx andwhat could, perhaps, be their suc-cess. The 27 year old Mills -Cock -ell is a Moog Synthesizer freak

Fea-tured are the Royal Winnipeg Bal-let, choreographed by Brian Mac-donald, and Toronto's thirteenpiece Lighthouse rock/jazz/clas-sical ensemble."Ballet High" comes in threeparts. The opener is Lighthouseplaying in the pit in front of thestage. The group slowly rises tostage level and is pushed to theback of the stage on a portableplatform - performing while themoving is taking place. Thecomplete Ballet Company thenappears on stage with a few mem-bers going through exercises onbars while others lounge aroundand listen to Lighthouse. TheCompany's unofficial prima bal-lerina, Christine Hennessy, takesthe lead in an interpretation ofKenneth MacMillan's "Solitaire",the point being, Christine of theblack tights, is an outcast. Fol-

Rainvilles MovingToward Pop ChartsDot and Morris Rainville, current-ly riding the country charts withtheir Melbourne deck, "FortunateSon", are showing early indica-tions of making moves towardsthe pop charts. They enter theRPM MAPL chart at No. 46, thisweek.

The popular duo have just com-pleted a two week engagement atthe Central Hotel, Oshawa Ont.,where they doubled the businessover their appearance last year.

Radio station CHOO's Don Os -bourne (Ajax) has been givinggood exposure to the pair's discwhich contributed much to thesuccessful engagement.

The Rainville's head north toKapaskasing for two weeks atthe Westward -Ho, followed bytwo weeks at the Whitby Hotel,in Whitby, Ontario.

Their current drawing power plusthe potential of their disc saleshas created a packed year pf en-gagements for the husband andwife team. Their bookings nowextend into the third week inJanuary.

Melanie sang to about 7000 people or more on a sloping hillside right

beside the free kitchen. It was very appropriate of the whole idea

of free kitchens and Festivals of life to have her there. Melanie

sings songs about love, peace, beautiful people, healthy food,

and life. The crowd went wild when she sang that "she wouldn't have come here if she didn't care

a lot". She introduced a new song, "Peace Will Come", which had

everyone chanting along, and sang Mungo Jerry's "In The Sum-

mertime". It was a joyous, mov- ing performance, and made many

people, who came to Powder Ridge expecting to receive something

but instead gave it much more, very happy.

is polished, but, perhaps, well -thought -out is more appropriate.Through all his numbers, Felicia-no remains indefatigible. His pun-ning with audience is a seldom,if ever, part of any show. He isconsistently cheerful, tongue-in-cheek at times, sincere always,and his playing reflects this hap-py state of mind.His is a most astonishingly broadrepertoire, ranging from countryto classical and everything in be-tween. His guitar mastery is notjust lightning quick and full offireworks, but also emotive, rich,and sensitive, whether the instru-ment is acoustic guitar or "quatro"guitar (Puerto Rican).As an example of his wide selec-tion of material, one might justglance through the program: "HeyJude", "Sunny", "Satisfaction" ,

"Zorba The Greek", his owncompositions, totally differentfrom each other; "Destiny" (rock),"Once There Was A Love" (bal-lad).

His rendition of "Windmills OfYour Mind" was captivating; hisclassically performed "Malaguena"is a gem.The fact the he cannot fully dis-cern the dramatic effect of thelighting around him proves thatthe musical result is genuineFeliciano - no gimmickry.Preceding Feliciano were the Ed-win Hawkin Singers, a mighty ex-uberant gospel group of 16 musi-cians and vocalists. Their com-munication with the audience isalso 100%, although in a differentmanner. Their program beginsslowly enough, building up to arousing climax at the end whichinvolves the audience - totally.

CMA Meets in Toronto

At it's meeting in Toronto a few weeks ago, the Country Music Founda-

tion Board of Trustees reviewed the program of the Country Music Hall of

Fame with a mixture of pride and satisfaction, noting a fifty per cent

increase in attendance over 1969.

Co-chaired by 3oard Chairman Frank Jones of Columbia Records and

President Roy Horton of Peer -Southern, the Board also explored future expansion

plans for the Hall of Fame and the up -dating of the exhibits which were

created in 1967. The new film for use in the hall which depicts the history

and growth of country music was re- viewed. The full agenda consisted of detailed reports presented by various

committees including the treasurer's report, Pioneer Memorial and Clement

Memorial, Library and Media Centre Policy rules, Insurance programs and

the Hall of Fame book.

In attendance at the meeting were: Roy Horton, Grelun Landon, Brad McGuen,

Frank Jones, Bill Denny, Jack Loetz, Paul Ackerman, Frances Preston,

Wesley Rose, Ben Rosner, Harold Moon, Dick Frank and Jo Walker.

"As the Years Go By"-A National HitWhen Columbia Records first bowedthe Mashmakhan album, there was muchconcern over a possible single release.The label's A&R Director, Johnny Wil-liams was certain the group could be-come a hot item for the top forty out-lets. CHUM FM had already provenMashmakhan were extremely strong withthe free formers. It was just a matter oftaking a couple of cuts and trimmingthem down for single play. 'Days WhenWe Are Free' was the plug side with'As the Years Go By' making the flip.No sooner was the single released thanthe chart action began. Programmersseemed to have some difficulty in pick-ing a side. Most went with 'Days' butthere was a growing trend for the flip.

'As the Years Go By' finally won outand the group took hold nationally.Being 'picked' on the Maple Leaf Systembrought a few more major markets intoplay. In Montreal, Roger Scott at CFOXnoted 'most requested song in Station'shistory'. It was number one for fourweeks. In Vancouver, CKLG's RoyHennessy said, 'Started slow..nowmoving fast-ton ten next week..lookslike biggest Canadian record ever'.CHUM's Chuck McCoy tagged it'Biggest Canadian record since 'TheseEyes'. The single has even receivedtoken play in Edmonton.

Sam's Free Gigs Boost Disc

Bob Sniderman, who looks afterthe Sam The Record Man franchisestores, has found an unusuallyhigh, record buyer interest follow-ing free concerts in the plazaswhere franchise stores have justopened or where they are alreadyestablished.

One of the most successful freegigs was held in the NewtonbrookPlaza, located in Willowdale, asuburb of Toronto. The group in-volved was Columbia's Robert E.Lee Brigade. The crowd thatgathered, created a traffic tie-upbut also resulted in an overall in-crease for plaza merchants and adecided effect on sales of thegroup's single, "You Can't Al-ways Get What You Want" andtheir recently released album.Frank Lee's solo single, "She"also experienced a sales gain.

Sniderman has thrown similarpromotions with the opening ofeach new store and intends toincrease this type of activity.Record companies have expressedinterest in the promotions beingas they have seen an increase insales of the groups involved.In summing up the performance ofthe Lee Brigade Sniderman noted:"If you have any doubts about thepresence of Robert E. Lee, bewell assured he is alive and wellin the personnage of Frank Lee,and his 'Brigade' of four musi-cians."Sniderman also found that "underthe leadership of Frank, blendingan ensemblage of Jaggerish-Cock-er, with his own original vocalstyle, make this another of thefine young groups headed for thetop."

Fred Trainor MarriesSaturday July 25, practically thewhole town of Liverpool, NovaScotia (Hank Snow's birthplace)invaded Uxbridge Ontario to watchtheir favourite son, Fred Trainor,exchange vows with BarbaraBrunne, of Uxbridge.Tile delegation was headed bythe Mayor of Liverpool, who hap-pens to be Fred's father.There was also many well-wishersfrom the town of Barrie (about 60miles north of Toronto) where theTrainor name has become a house-hold word.

These included the staff of Bar-rie's radio -TV station (CKBB)where Trainor is program director,and members of the Civitan Club,with whom Fred frequently pro-duces country shows for charity."Walking" Jimmy Simms, whose"Shoes Keep On Walking" is stillpopular in Barrie, hiked in fromToronto to watch his buddy walkhis last steps as a bachelor.The Trainors are presently honey-mooning in Nova Scotia. Aftertheir return to Barrie in mid -August, Fred will be divulgingplans for at least two big coun-try shows in the Barrie area.

Columbia Records have shippedthe new Luke and The Apostles'True North single, "You Make MeHigh", in a special DJ mailerwith both the long and short ver-sions. The mailing is particularlyheavy and twofold, because of theexpected reaction to the disc andthe rekindling of the popularity ofthe group, which goes back to1964. The quartet, as they arenow, have played both "live" andon sessions with some of the topnames in the business. These in-clude: David Clayton Thomas, VanMorrison, Buddy Miles, Andy Kim,Felix Papalardi and Wilson Pick-ett. They are comprised of: LukeGibson, lead vocalist, harmonicaand guitar; Pat Little, drums: JackGusenger, bass; and Wally Rossi,lead guitar.

Besides his four singles, stillavailable, Dominion are pushingfour album releases plus a spe-cial 5 album set (suggested list$9.98) containing several of hisown compositions, well integratedwith foreign material including:"Mule Skinner Blues", "The BigRock Candy Mountain", "WabashCannonball" and others. MCA's Native ArtistsMoving UpMCA is experiencing some good ac-tivity with its roster of native talent.Christopher Kearney, whose Apex sin-gle, 'Theme for Jody' is getting goodexposure from programmers across thecountry, put in an appearance at theMariposa Folk Festival, followingwhich, sales of the single increasedappreciably. Barry Allen, experiencinggood returns on his deck of 'Wednesdayin your Garden', just wound up a re-cording session in Chicago, with pro-ducers Randy Backman and Wes Dakusdoing the honours. The resulting albumwill appear on the newly -formed Moltenlabel. And Finally, Apex's Sebastianmakes a tube appearance in Montrealon the 'Like Young Show', followingwhich is the release of his first albumon the new MCA label. MCA Reviving OldiesMCA is experiencing renewed interestin some of its product released overthe past few years. The rock opera'Tommy° by the Who is undergoing aresurgence of popularity, thought to bea result of the group's exposure in the`Woodstock' flick, their new release of'Live at Leeds' and heavy exposure of'Summertime Blues° across the country.Another factor in the new interest maybe the Assembled Multitude's versionof the 'Overture from Tommy' on At-lantic which is being aired throughoutCanada. Another artist coming on strongwith an old release is Burt Bacharachand 'His Hits'. Bacharach's numeroustelevision appearances coupled withthe enormous success of his composit-ions, has created a demand for record-ings featuring him- The 'Burt BacharachPlays His Hits' album is being orderedby record stores and being aired ex-tensively by MOR and FM stations.The set, originally released in Oc-tober, 1968, is being reserviced by thecompany.

He just completed hosting a NYC TVer "Scenes '70" which guested

Pacific Gas and Electric Company and the James Gang.///That new

single by Steel River is the fast- est selling 100% Canadian con-

tent single ever pressed by Quali- ty Records.///Speaking of fast

sellers. Take a look at the smoke Mashmakhan is leaving behind. I

hear they've sold over 65,000 pieces, and most of it within the

past month. They'll probably be applying for Canadian Gold.///

Latest to receive the RPM Gold Leaf Award and certify for out-

standing sales, is the Guess Who for their RCA album "Ameri- can Woman" and Creedence Clear-

water Revival's "Green River" album, on Fantasy. The way the

new Creedence album, "Cosmo's Factory" is going, they'll be ap-

What started out as a joke could make ex -golf profes- sional Colin Kerr a millionaire by the time he's forty.

has made him over a quarter of a million dollars. Says Colin: "Without Rajah I'd never get on top TV

come just to touch Rajah's cage, hoping that some of the bird's luck will rub off on them.

Rodeo recording artist, Mike Graham, who splashed across

the national country scene with his initial release, "No Pity For

A Fool", has been signed for personal management by J.R.

Productions Ltd. Graham's follow-up single, "She

Always Lets Me Down So Easy", also produced by Gary Buck, is

showing signs of getting the flip treatment. "These Things", a

Graham penning, is gaining the favour of country jocks.

London's Ontario sales and pro- motion manager, Ken McFarland,

sees good pop potential in the disc, whose only country refer- ence would seem to be the steel.

George Taylor, president of Ro- deo Records, also sees a widen- ing acceptance of the Graham

sound and refers to it as "Mike Graham and Mod -Country music

are synonomous". Graham's first album for Rodeo, "Canadian

Country Explosion" is now being readied for Fall release.

Coming up for Graham is a pro- motion in conjunction with CHEX radio, in Peterboro and he is

skedded for an engagement at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern,

Feliciano -No Gimmickry

Some performers have it. Some don't. Jose Feliciano, who ap-

peared at the O'Keefe Centre (July 20), is one of the very few with that rare gift of reaching the

audience. You could say his show

is polished, but, perhaps, well - thought -out is more appropriate.

Through all his numbers, Felicia- no remains indefatigible. His pun-

ning with audience is a seldom, if ever, part of any show. He is

consistently cheerful, tongue-in- cheek at times, sincere always,

and his playing reflects this hap- py state of mind.

His is a most astonishingly broad repertoire, ranging from country

to classical and everything in be- tween. His guitar mastery is not

just lightning quick and full of fireworks, but also emotive, rich,

and sensitive, whether the instru- ment is acoustic guitar or "quatro"

guitar (Puerto Rican). As an example of his wide selec-

tion of material, one might just glance through the program: -Hey Jude", "Sunny", "Satisfaction'

, "Zorba The Greek", his own compositions, totally different

from each other; "Destiny" (rock), "Once There Was A Love" (bal-

lad). His rendition of "Windmills Of

Your Mind" was captivating; his classically performed "Malaguena"

is a gem. The fact the he cannot fully dis- cern the dramatic effect of the

lighting around him proves that the musical result is genuine

Feliciano - no gimmickry. Preceding Feliciano were the Ed-

win Hawkin Singers, a mighty ex- uberant gospel group of 16 musi-

cians and vocalists. Their com- munication with the audience is

also 100%, although in a different manner. Their program begins slowly enough, building up to a

rousing climax at the end which involves the audience - totally.

this past weekend when she ap-peared unannounced and perhapsillegally to perform at the PowderRidge Festival.I was at Powder Ridge this pastweekend, and the news reports ofwhat happened there and what ac-tually did go down were quite dif-ferent. Many of the newspapermenwhom I talked with were overlyconcerned with finding "badtrips", and pointing out the drugabuse. I didn't really see that.What I saw was a bunch of kidswhose music had been snatchedaway from them because of poli-tical reasons, who instead hadpreferred to turn the three daysinto a true People's Festival;they generated their own electri-city from Mister Softee trucks,built their own alternate stages,set up sound systems, and had agood time. Local bands played,the vibrations were good and theentire experience was tremen-dously reassuring.For the first day or so, the kidsreally believed that if they heldthe land and remained in PowderRidge, Connecticutt, they wouldhave their Festival, with all ofthe top acts. However, the in-junction against the Festival wasenforced all along, and it wassomewhat depressing to see thesekids really believing their rockheroes were hiding out in thevicinity, just waiting to enter-tain them. The stars were faraway, both physically and spiri-tually, I believe. It is unfortunatethat in a situation where thereare so many villains, no onethinks to question the rock superheroes who demand huge fees forplaying, operate on a purely capi-talist system of profits, and thenwalk away with the adoration ofthe people for being part of the"revolution". But that's anotherstory.The real villains, in my opinion,at Powder Ridge, were the pro-moters who implied (up until thelast day before the concert, when

they fled) that the Festival wasstill being held and encouragedkids to buy tickets. The peoplewho were involved with the ad-vertising, publicity, and promo-tion must be made to account forsome of this. What is happeningto the money? Who will be makingmoney on T-shirts sold with thePowder Ridge emblem?Anyway, when the kids realizedthat no stars were coming, theymanaged to create their own musicand used their energy for that pur-pose. Then Melanie arrived. Whenshe was recognized, kids were sohappy because they felt they had"made it" and it would really bea Festival after all.

Melanie sang to about 7000 peopleor more on a sloping hillside rightbeside the free kitchen. It wasvery appropriate of the whole ideaof free kitchens and Festivals oflife to have her there. Melaniesings songs about love, peace,beautiful people, healthy food,and life. The crowd went wildwhen she sang that "she wouldn'thave come here if she didn't carea lot". She introduced a new song,"Peace Will Come", which hadeveryone chanting along, andsang Mungo Jerry's "In The Sum-mertime". It was a joyous, mov-ing performance, and made manypeople, who came to Powder Ridgeexpecting to receive somethingbut instead gave it much more,very happy.
