Striving to mirror Christ
in word and action by reaching
out to serve others!
Our Mission
Statement
Journeys
Inside this issue:
November 2013 Volume 12, Issue 11
is a monthly publication of St. Paul Lutheran Church
Life with Technology and Church
It has changed my life. I’m not
talking about a religious experience.
I’m talking about my personal rela‐
tionship with my iPhone/iPad and
the ʺpowerʺ and ʺmysteryʺ of the
Apple Store.
I went to the Apple store this
morning for a One‐on‐One class. It
was a magical experience! Among
the joyous sounds
was an energetic
toddlersʹ delight at
swiping the screen
of an iPad and an
old PC guy (me)
learning the ropes
of a MacBook Air.
In, You are Not a
Gadget, Jaron La‐
nier states: “When
developers of digi‐
tal technologies de‐
sign a program that
requires you to in‐
teract with a com‐
puter as if it were a
person, they ask you to accept in
some corner of your brain that you
might also be conceived of as a pro‐
gram.”
In our world today, we need real
connections: physical communal
worship. Worship may seem like a
group of individuals coming togeth‐
er to get their individual spiritual
needs met, but it is so much more! It
is a countercultural gathering in real
space and time to praise God!
As we worship, sing, and pray
together, ʺwonderʺ happens. This
magical communal bond gives per‐
spective for the rest of life! It remind
us of the needs of
others, deepens com‐
mitment to the com‐
mon good and in‐
spires us to justice
and peace! It
attempts to experi‐
ence the mystery of
our beautiful Chris‐
tian faith.
In the midst of all
our life choices; how
to invest our time
and money, worship
is an offering of
praise to God, pre‐
serving God’s crea‐
tive and redeeming Word to all the
world. The sum is greater than the
parts!

The 23rd Annual CHOC Walk in
the Park presented by the Disneyland®
Resort was a tremendous success with
close to 16,000 walkers participating in
honor of a child treated at CHOC Chil‐
dren’s! CHOC is thrilled to announce
that when the last person crossed the
finish line in Downtown Disney®, the
tally stood at $1.8 million to support the
care, family services, education and re‐
search that CHOC provides for the re‐
gionʹs children. Seventeen of those
walkers were from St. Paul. “Team Na‐
talie” was captained by our own Natalie
Reggio ‐who also brought along many
school and family friends. Thank you to
the congregation for sponsoring Mi‐
chael Allen, Hailee Farias, Noah Goell‐
rich, Madison Thompson, Christopher
Allen, Katie Castro, George Montgom‐
ery, Jim and Pastor Judi Miller, Rick and
Dawn Stone, and Rob, Cari, Anthony,

Women of the ELCA
November 2013
November is the time that the Wom‐
en of the ELCA and St. Paul hold our
Thankoffering Service. We will celebrate
our Thankoffering service on Sunday,
November 17th at all three services. This
is a time that we share in a tradition da‐
ting back to the 1800s, when Christian
women formed ‘mite’ (a very small coin
or sum of money) or ‘cent’ societies to
fund mission. When others in the church
said there was not enough money to car‐
ry out these projects, the women be‐
lieved otherwise. In cent societies, each
woman collected offerings at home.
They would then gather as we do to
worship and combine our
offerings and offer them up
with thanks and praise, dedi‐
cating the funds to mission.
When Women of the ELCA
was formed more than 25
years ago, we committed to
continue this tradition of giv‐
ing in gratitude for blessings.
Each year, in thousands of congrega‐
tions, Thankofferings are collected and
sent to support the life changing minis‐
tries of Women of the ELCA. Together,
we do more than we could ever do
apart, in gratitude for all God has given
to us, and with hope for all that is to
come. Please come prepared to join us in
this special offering.
We continue to support the minis‐
tries within St. Paul and outside in our
community.
Quilting 101 – On Saturday, Septem‐ber 28 we met to complete our pro‐
ject for Lutheran World Relief. We
sent 156 quilts (exceeding our goal of
100) to Lutheran World Relief on
October 22nd. These quilts will be
shipped to Haiti, Africa and other
3rd World Countries. We started this
project in January and averaged 20
ladies each month who met to cut,
iron, sew, and tie the quilts. What a
great fellowship we had during this
period. On Sunday, October 20 we
had a blessing of all 156 quilts which
were displayed in the sanctuary.
Thanks to all who helped with the
making these quilts as well as those
who bought raffle tickets to help
with the shipping costs. The winning
ticket was drawn at our Harvest Tea
and the beautiful quilt, made and
donated by Barbara Swan‐
burg went to Stephanie Fish‐
er. Watch for news about fu‐
ture quilting days in 2014.
Harvest Tea on Wednes‐
day, October 9tat 4 p.m.
What a fun time we had at
the Harvest Tea. Thanks to
Elizabeth Circle for coordi‐
nating this event. Entertainment was
by the Pilgrim Pickers with a sing
along by all those in attendance.
Thanks to all of you who contribut‐
ed goodies, without your help this
event would not take place.
Brown Bag Sunday – bags were giv‐
en out and returned full of food
which was given to the La Habra
Resource Center. They are so happy
to have all these bags to help stock
their empty shelves.
The jar is still in the Narthex for you
to bring your pennies, other coins
and dollars to help feed the hungry.
Food items are always welcome; we
give these items to the Pathways for
(Continued on page 5)
Happy Thanksgiving!
Page 5 Volume 12, Issue 11
Hope to help stock their food pan‐
try. In September Ardis Carroll took
10 bags of food. This is an ongoing
project to help those in need.
Treats for Troops. Collections have been fabulous from St. Paul and
friends. Jo Kerr, who coordinates
this effort, sends her thanks for the
items donated by St. Paul.
As you can see from the above, we
are an active group and will welcome
you to join us.
In addition to the above, the Pacifica
Women of the ELCA Annual Conven‐
tion will be held November 1‐3, 2013 at
the Ayres Hotel, Costa Mesa. Ardis Car‐
roll and I will be attending.
The Women of the ELCA Ninth Trienni‐
al Gathering will be held in Charlotte,
NC on July 24‐27, 2014. Wouldn’t it be
fun to get a group from St. Paul to
attend this event!
Just a reminder, Advent by Candle‐
light 2013 will be held November 24
from 6:30 – 8 p.m. The theme this year is
“Tales from the Stable”. If you are inter‐
ested in hosting a table, please contact
Pam Montgomery (714‐526‐6417) or Pas‐
tor Judi. This is a great way to prepare
souls for the “waiting season” of ad‐
vent.

Let it be known to all of you, and to all the peo-
ple of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by
the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,* whom you
crucified, whom God raised from the dead. Acts of the Apostles 4.10:
Dealing with Holiday Stresses One purpose of our congregation’s
Health Ministry Team may be to help
bring to our attention the importance of
caring for ourselves in body, mind, spir‐
it and relationships. As someone who
shares with you in the life and mission
of St. Paul Lutheran Church, I feel hon‐
ored in offering you some of my
thoughts on the topic of dealing with
holiday stress.
From my perspective of faith I be‐
lieve that God gives us someone whom
we need and desire and who touches us
in the deepest place of our being. God
loves us. Christ Jesus, his son, our Lord
wraps us in his embrace and holds us
closely. Nothing ever can change how
beloved we are. My faith believes that
God loves us into trusting so that we
know that we are always and forever
God’s beloved. God is with us and for
us always so that nothing will ever sep‐
arate us from God. God cares for us no
matter what happens because we be‐
long to God.
God’s love intends to touch our per‐
sonal lives. Therefore, God’s caring for
us includes our loving ourselves as God
loves us. And, God’s caring for our
neighbor includes our loving our neigh‐
bor as we love ourselves.
By loving our neighbor –as‐‐well –as
‐we–love‐ourselves and as –well‐ as‐
God‐loves–all‐of‐humanity, I see that
weʹre all in this together, both in com‐
munion with God and in community
with each other.
As you read this newsletter you re‐
alize that weʹve entered the mega‐
season of the holidays: Thanksgiving,
Christmas, and maybe even New
Year’s. Getting ready for the holidays
usually involves adding into our busy
lives the stress‐creating extra holiday
planning, preparation, and celebration.
While good stress can energize us into
action, during the holiday season we
are more likely to fall into a habit of
stressing out.
When weʹre stressed out we put
greater expectations on ourselves.
While our expectations of ourselves
vary, usually we lay on ourselves a
need to accomplish more, spend more,
and please others more.
Of course, as we expect more of
ourselves we tend to expect more of
others, especially those we live with. By
spreading ourselves too thin we take a
toll on ourselves and our relationship
with our loved ones.
Living at a stressed out pace can
affect us in every area: our physical
health, mental‐ emotional‐spiritual
health, and the health of our relation‐
ships. As we know, our stress can get to
us.
For the coming weeks during the holi‐
day season and for the sake of caring for
ourselves and our relationships, consid‐
er practicing ways that may help you
maintain a healthy level of stress.
Consider the following practices as spe‐
cial loving gifts from God to you:
Live in the now, in the moment
Remember that you are beloved
Spend time with God, in worship
with others and privately
Take time away from the hectic
pace: reflect, breathe deeply, pray
Notice how good stress energizes
you into action

SURE CHECKS 4TH SUNDAY EACH MONTH
9 —11 A.M. IN THE PARISH
HALL
ADVANCE DIRECTIVES AND
POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR
HEALTH CARE
Sunday, November 3 at 6 p.m.
in the Parish Hall
Pearl Mann, St. Paul member and
attorney, will lead a workshop helping
you to understand your options and
indicate choices for your care that
would be legally binding should your
become seriously ill or mentally/
physically impaired. As this can hap‐
pen to anyone at anytime, the proper
time to understand, evaluate and
choose how you would like to be
treated medically and who you would
want to make those decisions in your
stead is NOW ‐ when you are healthy
and not facing immediate illness or
surgery. There will be no charge or
soliciting. Come and listen, ask ques‐
tions and learn. These could be the
most important and loving decisions
you will make for yourself and your
family.
Advance Directives and Power of Attorney Seminar
Reflect on the meaning of each hol‐
iday, and share your thoughts with
people you trust
Gear down your expectations of
yourself and of others
Talk with someone you trust about
how you are (honestly): what’s
difficult, frustrating, lonely, or sad
for you (it’s okay to think and feel
because you don’t have to be hap‐
py just because it’s the holidays)
Get support from family/friends,
get additional help from your pas‐
tor or a professional counselor or
therapist
Enjoy hanging out with family/
friends
Do some things you enjoy, not only
things you feel you have to do
Get plenty of rest (the better you
feel the more enjoyable a holiday
can be)
Be grateful for the gifts and bless‐
ings you already have (avoid com‐
plaining)
Eat and drink with your health in
mind
Exercise and be active
Say ʺnoʺ sometimes to yourself and
others (people understand if you
don’t do things)
And, include your own practices of
caring for yourself: your body,
mind, spirit, and relationships
I’m so interested in this topic that
I’d like Iʹm also interested in learning
what it is that you do to help yourself
to care for yourself during this holiday
season. And, what is it that you do that
moves you into being stressed out? If
you’d like to tell me, send me an E‐
mail message to [email protected].
Here’s to holidays that are more of
a blessing,
Pastor Dave Hodgson

We welcome and encourage all prayer requests.
Please submit your requests in writing on your
Worship Registration card, via email or phone call to
the Church Office. Once or twice each month, names
will be removed from the list who have been in print
at least 3 consecutive weeks (except those deployed
overseas). You are welcome to re‐submit any name
removed from the list, or you may remove a name at
anytime by contacting the Church Office. Thank
you! If you or someone you know is in the hospital,
please be sure to call the church office (714) 879‐
8290 to inform us. Confidentiality laws now prevent
hospitals from contacting churches when
congregation members are hospitalized.
