Hypostases: One God in three persons. The three persons are distinct, yet are onesubstance, essence or nature (What notwho). Each person is God, whole and entire, but distinct from one another in theirrelations of origin. Father generates, Sonbegotten, Spirit proceeds. Distinct inrelations with one another, they are onein all else. How can you try to explainthis mystery of the Christianfaith to a new believer? 3. That God would bless ourcatechists and catechumens, thatboth those who teach and thosewho learn would be conformed tothe image of Christ, formed firmlyin the faith once entrusted to thesaints, preserved in their baptismalgrace, made fit partakers of theSacrament of our Lords body andblood, and be strengthened therebyfor faithful service in this world, tothe praise of His glorious grace 4. Isaiah 6:1-7Isaiahs Commission6 In the year that King Uzziah died, Isaw the Lord, high and exalted, seatedon a throne; and the train of hisrobe filled the temple. 2 Above him wereseraphim, each with six wings: With twowings they covered their faces, with twothey covered their feet, and with twothey were flying.3 And they were callingto one another:Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;the whole earth is full of his glory.4 At the sound of their voices thedoorposts and thresholds shook and thetemple was filled with smoke.5 Woe to me! I cried. I am ruined! ForI am a man of unclean lips, and I liveamong a people of unclean lips, and myeyes have seen the King, theLord Almighty.6 Then one of the seraphim flew to mewith a live coal in his hand, which hehad taken with tongs from thealtar. 7 With it he touched my mouth andsaid, See, this has touched yourlips; your guilt is taken away and yoursin atoned for. 9. John 3:1-17Jesus Teaches Nicodemus3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man namedNicodemus who was a member of the Jewishruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at nightand said, Rabbi, we know that you are ateacher who has come from God. For no onecould perform the signs you are doing if Godwere not with him.3 Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, no onecan see the kingdom of God unless they areborn again.[a]4 How can someone be born when they areold? Nicodemus asked. Surely they cannotenter a second time into their mothers wombto be born!5 Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, noone can enter the kingdom of God unlessthey are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Fleshgives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] givesbirth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprisedat my saying, You[c] must be bornagain. 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell whereit comes from or where it is going. So it iswith everyone born of the Spirit.[d]9 How can this be? Nicodemus asked.10 You are Israels teacher, said Jesus, anddo you not understand these things? 11 Verytruly I tell you, we speak of what weknow, and we testify to what we haveseen, but still you people do not accept ourtestimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthlythings and you do not believe; how then willyou believe if I speak of heavenlythings?13 No one has ever gone intoheaven except the one who came fromheaventhe Son of Man.[e]14 Just as Moseslifted up the snake in the wilderness, so theSon of Man must be lifted up,[f]15 thateveryone who believes may have eternal lifein him.[g]16 For God so loved the world that hegave his one and only Son, that whoeverbelieves in him shall not perish but haveeternal life. 17 For God did not send his Soninto the world to condemn the world, but tosave the world through him. 11. Psalm 29A psalm of David.1 Ascribe to the LORD, you heavenlybeings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due hisname;worship the LORD in the splendor ofhis[a]holiness.3 The voice of the LORD is over thewaters;the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mightywaters.4 The voice of the LORD is powerful;the voice of the LORD is majestic.5 The voice of the LORD breaks thecedars;the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars ofLebanon.6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,Sirion[b] like a young wild ox.7 The voice of the LORD strikeswith flashes of lightning.8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert;the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks[c]and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, Glory!10 The LORD sits enthroned over theflood;the LORD is enthroned as King forever.11 The LORD gives strength to his people;the LORD blesses his people withpeace. 12. HOLY TRINITYIsaiah 6:17Romans 11:3336John 3:115 (1617)The Holy Trinity Reveals Himself to SinnersWhen Isaiah beheld the glory of the Lord, he cried out Woe is me! For the sinner cannotstand in the presence of a holy God and live (Is. 6:17). But God the Father lifted up HisSon Jesus for us on the cross, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but haveeternal life. This eternal life of Christ is given us according to the Holy Spirits goodpleasure in Baptism. Unless one is born [again] of water and the Spirit, he cannot enterthe kingdom of God (John 3:5). To sinners in fear of death, the messengers of God placeon our lips the living body and blood of Christ and speak His words of absolution, Yourguilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for (Is. 6:7). Having received forgiveness and lifefrom the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit, we join with the angels in praising theblessed Trinity, Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! (Is. 6:3). For from Him andthrough Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen (Rom. 11:3336). 13. Gen. 15:1-6; 1 John 4:16-21; Luke 16:19-31;Psalm 33:12-22Genesis 15:1-6Gods Covenant with Abram15 After these things the word ofthe LORD came to Abram in a vision, Do notbe afraid, Abram, I am your shield; yourreward shall be very great. 2 But Abramsaid, O Lord GOD, what will you give me, forI continue childless, and the heir of my house isEliezer of Damascus?[a] 3 And Abramsaid, You have given me no offspring, and soa slave born in my house is to be myheir. 4 But the word of the LORD came tohim, This man shall not be your heir; no onebut your very own issue shall be yourheir. 5 He brought him outside and said, Looktoward heaven and count the stars, if you areable to count them. Then he said to him, Soshall your descendants be. 6 And he believedthe LORD; and theLORD[b] reckoned it to him asrighteousness.1 John 4:16-2116 So we have known and believe the love thatGod has for us.God is love, and those who abide in love abidein God, and God abides in them. 17 Love hasbeen perfected among us in this: that we mayhave boldness on the day of judgment, becauseas he is, so are we in this world.18 There is nofear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; forfear has to do with punishment, and whoeverfears has not reached perfection in love. 19 Welove[a]because he first loved us. 20 Those whosay, I love God, and hate their brothers orsisters,[b] are liars; for those who do not love abrother or sister[c] whom they have seen, cannotlove God whom they have not seen. 21 Thecommandment we have from him is this: thosewho love God must love their brothers andsisters[d] also.Luke 16:19-31The Rich Man and Lazarus19 There was a rich man who was dressed inpurple and fine linen and who feastedsumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay apoor man named Lazarus, covered withsores, 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger withwhat fell from the rich mans table; even thedogs would come and lick his sores. 22 Thepoor man died and was carried away by theangels to be with Abraham.[a] The rich manalso died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where hewas being tormented, he looked up and sawAbraham far away with Lazarus by hisside.[b] 24 He called out, Father Abraham, havemercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip ofhis finger in water and cool my tongue; for Iam in agony in these flames. 25 But Abrahamsaid, Child, remember that during yourlifetime you received your good things, andLazarus in like manner evil things; but now heis comforted here, and you are inagony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us agreat chasm has been fixed, so that those whomight want to pass from here to you cannot doso, and no one can cross from there to us.27 Hesaid, Then, father, I beg you to send him to myfathers house 28 for I have five brothersthat he may warn them, so that they will notalso come into this place oftorment. 29 Abraham replied, They haveMoses and the prophets; they should listen tothem. 30 He said, No, father Abraham; but ifsomeone goes to them from the dead, they willrepent. 31 He said to him, If they do not listento Moses and the prophets, neither will they beconvinced even if someone rises from thedead.Psalm 33:12-2212 Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD,the people whom he has chosen as hisheritage.13 The LORD looks down from heaven;he sees all humankind.14 From where he sits enthroned he watchesall the inhabitants of the earth15 he who fashions the hearts of them all,and observes all their deeds.16 A king is not saved by his great army;a warrior is not delivered by his greatstrength.17 The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save.18 Truly the eye of the LORD is on those whofear him,on those who hope in his steadfast love,19 to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.20 Our soul waits for the LORD;he is our help and shield.21 Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.22 Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us,even as we hope in you.
